Breadhive is delicious. Their bagels are fresh and so tasty. They have a crunchy outside and soft, chewy inside. I have tried the Britney minus the red onion. I loved it. I even took some of the lox off because they gave so much but that isn't a bad thing. We went yesterday for breakfast and ordered the Aaliyah which was also ridiculously good. My only complaint is that their coffee isn't the greatest. It is Public House coffee and it's very bitter. Other than that though we love it and the food they sell! read more

I ended up making my first ever trip to the Breadhive Bakery and Cafe Sunday afternoon while looking for a quick fill meal before heading off to Toronto with some other people. I typed in bakery and this was the first place that popped up, so it was the first place I drove too. Breadhive itself looks really cool from the outside and once you enter, it looks just as cool on the inside. This place offers plenty of seating for groups of all sizes (although it does fill up fast during busy hours) and offers a ton of breakfast, beverage, and lunch options for you. My eyes were stuck on the treats like cookies, pretzels, and brownies although I was an adult and only got the salty chocolate cookie and a pretzel (Okay, maybe this wasn't a mature decision but it made me happy). On top of the food I also got a locally sourced chocolate milk and it was creamy and delicious. The salty chocolate chip cookie was fantastic and even though one wasn't enough it left me plenty of room for the tasty pretzel I had. This place was really cool and definitely somewhere I would come back to in the future. read more

Absolutely amazing! Treated myself to a carb filled breakfast following a long training run. I custom ordered a sesame seed bagel w/ avocado spread and lox. I stopped in on a Saturday around noon, after doing a bit of wandering and wanting to try a new place. I've had their pretzels and other breads before, so I knew I was in for something good. There was a pretty constant stream of folks in and out, picking up bread, ordering sandwiches to stay. I sat at the window bench and did some people watching. I had the Dolly (BBQ seitan, slaw, Barrel & Brine pickles). It was so good, will definitely recommend and get again. This place is absolutely adorable and the baked goods are amazing! Breads and bagels and soft pretzels and muffins and cookies..... I had a sesame bagel with roasted vegetable cream cheese and it was delicious. The bagel was reminiscent of NYC bagels.... with the perfect boiled then baked consistency. It was topped with just the right amount of both white and black sesame seeds. The roasted veggie cream cheese was fantastic! The roasted flavor really came through... and the bits of veggies were large enough to actually taste individually. The "Public Espresso" coffee was a bit disappointing.... both weak and on the "sour" side, it was not up to the standards I've had at other venues. The service was also a bit on the slow side (and not overly friendly). Still, I will be back.... for that yummy bagel sandwich, and to try some of their delicious sounding lunch options. And, because the idea of a worker-owned cooperative bakery is so very, very cool! read more

The bagels are fantastic: crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside and not too dense. The sandwich ingredients are all fresh and delicious. And for my money, it's as good a cup of coffee as you'll find anywhere in town. I do wish they'd serve breakfast sandwiches a little longer...but I'm willing to get in before 10:30 if it means getting the "Aaliyah," with egg, cheese and homemade sausage patty. If you are a chocolate chip cookie fan, biscuit fan, bun fan...get in here. The word bread doesn't even scratch the surface of the baked goods they offer. The staff is attentive. The space is simple and bright, with cozy "farmy" touches here and there. I was late to the game discovering this cafe, but maybe that's a good thing. We have heard good things about breadhive but never had to opportunity to visit, and since we came we've been back 2 times in the span of a month. It's just amazing. I recently found this place and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to check it out. I went during the morning and got "the Fiona". It has Brie, apple, and fig on your choice of toasted bread or bagel. It also came with a side salad. The sandwich was amazing! It took about ten minutes to make. While I waited I flipped through a local newspaper that they have available. They also have some books available to read from Burning Books. I highly recommend checking this place out! They play great music too! read more

I love the Breadhive Cafe. I have been here time and time again and have never been disappointed. The staff is very friendly and the bread is incredibly fresh. As a vegetarian, it is so nice to be able to order something than portobello mushroom when I'm in the mood for a sandwich and Breadhive delivers. They offer vegetarian and vegan options! My personal favorite is the Bjork. In addition to made to order sandwiches, it's always nice to pick up some bagels or soft pretzels to go. She receives a chance letter informing her she has won the French lottery and will be given the sum of 10,000 francs. So what does Babette do? She spends it all on one feast where she has her nephew send all the food by boat from France, complete with a turtle for soup and a case of wine. Her desire to is to show her friends there the beauty of what a meal can be. Breadhive is a Babette of sorts, bringing something deliciously foreign and beautiful to our neighborhood. While the cafe claims to aim for something of an upscale Cracker Barrel, It is clearly much more than that. The cafe also carries with it the beauty of a French boulangerie where bread is taken seriously as an art to be crafted and sculpted into a fourth utensil that accompanies every meal. To encourage more such permanence, they offer a bread share which gives you the benefits and intimacy afforded by a long-term relationship. And the intimacy can been tasted in the form of a weekly offering of bread, bagels, or granola. All of these items are baked locally on the West Side as part of a worker-owned cooperative. In the area of relationships, one of BreadHive's greatest strengths, I think, is their desire and ability to form mutually beneficial connections with others in the neighborhood. They sell their bread at the Lexington Co-op and Guercio & Sons among other places. Barrel and Brine pickled items appear on many of their sandwiches. Community Beer Works makes small-batch soda just for them. They also like to hang out regularly with Public Espresso, via an airstream in Larkin Square. It's slightly reminiscent of the coffee shop near my Granny's house in Seattle, which is actually just a guy selling coffee out of his blue and white 70's VW bus. It's captivating to see Breadhive actually spending their 10,000 francs on the beautiful ideas they come up with. The cafe itself is comforting and charming all at once. It feels as if it could be out in the country but instead is nestled into our neighborhood on the West Side. Looking at their menu, it's not hard to get in the delightfully painful conundrum of wanting two things equally as much and deciding to get both and to save one for later or eating half of both and giving the other halves to someone who looks like they're from Babette's bland Norwegian town. My personal favorite is The Fiona, a sandwich layered with brie, apples, figs, and a fig spread. It's the courage of people like Babette and BreadHive to take beautiful risks that creates scenes that make you smile in an innocent, disarming way. I'm really thankful to have such a place in Buffalo. They bring a unique and artistic brush stroke to our neighborhood. Such a scene like the following from Babette's story is good place to end. "All the same when Martine saw a barrow load of bottles wheeled into the kitchen, she stood still. She touched the bottles and lifted up one. 'What is there in this bottle, Babette?' she asked in a low voice. 'Not wine?' 'Wine, Madame!' Babette answered. 'No, Madame. It is a Clos Vougeot 1846!' Came out with my mom for the July Garden Walk and I just found the place on Yelp. Surprise surprise my mom had wanted to go hear for forever. It's very cute place and the food was amazing. I had the Rachael sandwich and my mom got a bagel with a bunch of veggies and cream cheese. We took some cookies and bread back home. Quality is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Breadhive. The bakery truly gives you top of the line fresh ingredients that you can taste. The lunch sandwiches were especially good, I had the Mariah and the flavors were spot on. I've also heard great things about their breakfast sandwiches and drinks. Vegetarian sandwiches seem like an afterthought on some restaurant menus. Slap some greens and cheese in between two slices of bread--there ya go! But I'm happy to say that this is not the case at Breadhive. Breadhive has not just one, but four (!!!) vegetarian-friendly sandwiches on its lunch menu. And they're interesting combinations, so when my husband and I stopped here for lunch, my meat-eating other half decided that he would also order a vegetarian sandwich, and we could go half and half. We ordered the Bjork, which includes tempeh bacon and kimchi, and The Dolly, which has seitan and BBQ sauce. Both the sourdough bread and the sandwich fillings were excellent. We also like to buy their sourdough (which is also available at the Coop), slice the entire loaf, and pop the bag in the freezer, so we can grab slices to toast whenever we have a hankering for some good bread. read more

Wow Breadhive Bakery and Cafe is the cutest. The small detailed decorations are great and I really appreciated the café vibe they had. Great juices and a variety of bagels and spreads. They even hang the bagels on the wall (super instagrammable!). I had a bagel and part of a warm toasted cookie and was super impressed. I just wrote a huge review, but realized I wasn't signed in and managed to delete it. So, I'll write a shortened version. Bagels/pretzels/bread: fantastic, as one who already is familiar with their work would know. Sandwiches: excellent, especially the Aliyaa and the Robyn. Gwen could use less red onion and a stronger cheese. Price: on the expensive side for a sandwich. Prices are $8-10 for a lunch sandwich, and that is just the sandwich. No chips, no greens, no pickle, no mac salad. I understand they are all hipstery and trendy, but will that really stay competitive, especially on the West Side? Keep in mind Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile is a few blocks east, and they are similarly priced but give you more. I hope they thrive and continue to grow. I'm withholding the fifth star as value-wise, they could offer more for a $10 sandwich. When you gotta reach for the twenty in your wallet, it makes you think twice. Or just use a credit card because that's free money anyway, right? read more

I have been a big fan of Breadhive for quite some time. Their carbs are tasty enough to have Atkins enthusiasts fall off the wagon. So here I am on my vacation, er staycation, and I decided to stop in to Breadhive's Cafe on opening day. Situated on Connecticut Street, I walked in to the yellow singled house and scooted in line with a dozen or so others waiting for a delish sammy. I glanced over at their grab and go case. I picked up an overnight oats (apple cinnamon, if you were wondering) and headed to the cash register. I was waited on quickly considering the line. I picked out the Fiona and the Gwen, not only because it brought me back to my music choices of the late 90's, but because the descriptions had my taste buds salivating!! I ordered to go, and told the woman waiting on me that my next venture in I would be so getting the salted chocolate rye cookies. The wait is what I expected for the first day. So I glanced around and people watched for a bit, very cozy inside with just enough seating to fill up the place comfortably. Another worker came around with some samples of their fruit scones, delish again. Breadhive, you work wonders with gluten. Let me tell you. They came out with my sandwiches and I was on my way home. I resisted any taste testing in the car (which I am known to do). Ok, maybe a slight taste of the overnight oats, baby sample. Barely can consider a sample actually. The sandwiches are hearty. The turkey was quality filled with pepper Jack and avocado, really good. Opted for it on seeded sourdough. The Fiona? Well, that was like eating dessert for lunch. Really. Brie and figs and apples all smooched together for a festival in mouth. Each ingredient was easily detected, which makes it a perfect concoction in my books. The sandwiches are big enough for fill you up, I saved enough for snacks later of each. I did save the overnight oats for tonight while I'm binge watching OITNB. Can't devour everything in one sitting, I suppose. Lol Check the Cafe out. It's cute, it's cozy, it's quality. You've done good Breadhive, see you soon. I've been here 4 or 5 times now for breakfast and lunch. My strongest impressions are that Breadhive remains a great place to pick up some artisan bread, bagels, and pretzels; and that the breakfast here is really good. I have mixed feelings about the lunch. When I moved to Buffalo a few years ago, I wasn't all that impressed with their bagels, but that's really changed. I absolutely LOVE the bagels (particularly the rosemary salt and blueberry), and when I picked a bunch for my in-laws a few weeks ago, they were fans too. You also can't go wrong with any of the breakfast sandwiches, which--wonderfully--you can order with some coffee from Public Espresso. I haven't been as impressed with their lunch. Admittedly, I've only had two sandwiches--the Dolly and the Fiona--but they've been underwhelming. The bread is always great; it's the stuff in the middle that doesn't always work for me. The Fiona is a wonderful sounding combination of fig, apple, brie, and fontinella; but in the execution, the apple is sort of steamed or softened by molten brie and fontinella. It doesn't work for me. I'd prefer something that felt a bit snappier and fresher. On the most recent visit we had a barley salad, too. It was great! My favorite go-to brunch/lunch spot in the neighborhood. Their breakfast sandwich, aaliyah with sausage, egg, cheddar and maple butter is a force to be reckoned with; it very well may be the best hangover cure I've ever had in my life. I've also tried the gwen, fiona, and stevie and all are absolutely incredible with fresh ingredients, and generous portions. Stopped by for lunch. Great place with ample street parking and a large bike rack out front. Cute interior. Feels like a grandma's kitchen, very welcoming with awesome local art work and many different kinds of stained glass. It's very bright and welcoming. I ordered a pretzel with cheddar and tomato grilled/ pressed. It was amazing! There are many sandwich options and I want to try them all. At my next visit I'm going to get the brie and pear. The girls behind the counter were super nice and helpful with suggestions. Tuesday is blueberry day so my friend got blueberry bagels and a rosemary loaf. I grabbed a baguette and some soft dill and herb cheese for a picnic later that night. We grabbed our sandwiches and sat out side at one of their tables in the sun. There is plenty of room and they have a water pitcher with utensils as well. This is definitely getting added to my list of quick, local and yummy lunch spots. read more

When walking in, be prepared to be wowed. This place is so beautiful on the inside, so fresh, light and airy, it's as if you're transported somewhere else when you walk in the doors. I had a kombucha from their glass refrigerated case (it was delicious although I was surprised to not see a local brand), the Fiona and a salted chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was good and satisfied my sweet tooth but the real star is the sandwich. Green apple slices, Brie, and fig on sourdough bread and grilled? Heart be still, it was epic. I did have to wait a little for it to be made, (next time I'll call ahead), but it was for sure worth the wait. read more
