I've been going here occasionally for over 20 years, including when they were in a very small store front, with a few tables decked with red and white checked gingham oilcloth. Now they are in a much bigger modernized space, but still the great food. To my knowledge, it is the closet to authentic deli that you will get in Troy. My favorite order is the "pick 2", I get half a grilled Reuben sandwich and a garden salad. The garden salad is large, about the size of two side salads at other places, and very fresh (crispy iceberg, romaine, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers). The Reuben is perfect...quality corned beef, true deli rye bread, dense and grilled just right. I also like the simplicity of their menu board. If I ever want to venture away from my Reuben, there are choices numbered 1 through about 8, and a combo deal that includes the special sandwich for the day, drink and cookie or chips Soup or chili is also available. I've tried the chicken noodle soup (good) and my son has repeatedly ordered the chili so it must be good! read more

I got the pastrami and corned beef combo, biggest meat. It cost less than $9, which is the cheapest I have found around Michigan, especially for the amount of meat you get. The sandwich was not bad, pretty tasty actually, but the quality of the pastrami doesn't compare to other places. It was very thinly sliced, so I missed the chewiness and the fattiness. I love these sandwiches because they don't fall apart easily like other deli sandwiches, yet they're stuffed with a sufficient amount of meat. It takes a little while for your sandwich to be prepared, so I'd recommend calling and ordering ahead of time. There's always a tasty pickle spear wrapped up alongside my turkey club, and the presence of this pickle is as consistent as the great taste of my sandwich. Overall, not exactly mind-blowing and a bit slow if you're eating in, but an always tasty, no hassle place to go to "break away" from your standard deli. read more

I tried calling breakaway four different times and it went straight to "all phone lines are busy please hang up and try again" so I decided to just go there and wait and when I got there it wasn't busy at all and no phones were ringing and then i asked about the breakfast sandwiches and they said they only do them till 11 but no where does it say only till 11 even on the website so I said okay and then asked if they could it least put a fried egg on the sandwich and they said no sorry, I work at stacked deli in Birmingham and even at the busiest hours they will make a fried egg for multipe customers it's even on some of the sandwiches so i know it's possible our food was good but the other reasons are why only three stars read more

This is the best deli in the Troy area. They have a great selection of sandwiches, salads and fresh soups. The staff there is always very friendly. They know me by name when I come in. It fells like the deli version of cheers. They just expanded their location and have a nice seating area outside. If you are a vegetation, they have some great selections. I feel bad for the amount of people who have given this place good reviews. It's clear that you've not been lucky enough to wander in to a halfway decent deli in your life, because this deli is awful. Simply put. I ordered a pastrami/corned beef combo sandwich with coleslaw. The sandwich was skimpy to start, and I'm not a big eater. But for 7 dollars, simply sad. And the pickle that should've came with my sandwich, I didn't receive. Screw it, I'll try it anyway. Well the first bite was so underwhelming I convinced myself it must have been one of those bad bites. But the next two bites told the story. The product they use is literally as cheap as it gets. They slice the meat so thin trying to mask the lack of quality in their meat. But just in case, they dump the worst coleslaw and sauce all over it, to the point that by the time I took my third disgusting bite, the whole sandwich fell apart. I decided to call it a loss, but my father whom I was eating with told me to have them make me a new one. To appease him and my hunger, I went back, waited, and finally was noticed by this trashy little troll who couldn't have been less helpful. I was as nice as could be, explained I didn't think it would be that messy and fall apart on me, and asked if she could take the pre-existing meat and just put it on new bread for me. With a look of disgust, which wasn't hard for a face like that, asked me "So what do you want?" I explained it again but this time said to put the coleslaw on the side. No response, nothing. Turns around and walks back to the sole cook and clearly starts talking shit about me. That's fine sandwich wench, just get me my sandwich and collect your minimum wage and we will all be happy. But please do tip her, she's gonna need money for the cover up work for the scratch jobs she passes off for tattoos all over her arms. So, I stand there and wait. They make me a new sandwich and don't even use the same product that I had returned. Normally I'd view that as a good business move and shows your customers you'd like for them to be satisfied in your product. Except they made me a different sandwich. On different bread. Fresh out of the microwave. Complete joke. Decided to try that anyway and just as gross. I've been in the industry for awhile and that place is one of the worst. If you want that kind of crap in your town, keep going there. If you'd like a good meal without having to deal with the decay of society, I could point you in the right direction.
