Delicious coffee served in a cute logo campfire-style mug!

I come to the area for work every few weeks, and heard about this place from a coworker. I swung by after a hectic morning for a quick bite, and was absolutely delighted at everything--the people were so nice, the food was outstanding and the ambiance...you had me at pics of dogs as chefs! I had the avocado toast and coffee. I purposely didn't have a lot, as I also had a lunch meeting in a few hours with some coworkers. It was perfect! To my delight, my coworkers wanted to eat there, so three hours later I was back. For my brunch meal, I had the Monte Cristo--and it was fantastic!! I can't recommend this place enough! Delicious, high quality food at a great price just down the street from my office--and did I mention pics of dogs as chefs?! I can't wait for my next trip up to try the biscuits and gravy!

Chorizo Hash

So happy to have a sit down restaurant in Boalsburg! Really delicious food and super friendly and quick service. Also, order the green chili sauce on everything. I don't care if you're having pancakes, order it anyways :) so far I've had the hash platter, breakfast burrito, and avocado toast and all were amazing. Oh, and be sure to start with some grilled stickies with their house made strawberry rhubarb jam!

Chorizo hash - not too spicy.

I was in on the south west side of State College for work today and found TNEC using "local…read morefavorites" search on Yelp. Nice little diner just outside of State College of SR 45. I had a great lunch with an awesome Rueben and shoe string fries. Home made corned beef on an excellent marbled rye. FYI The fries were a little cold. I also considered biscuits and gravy but they don't serve home fries after 11:00, odd for a breakfast all day place. The banana bread French toast also caught my eye so I grabbed a slice of banana bread to go. Service was fast and friendly Prices are in line with the "new normal", sandwich and a drink was $16.

The ambience was bright and clean. Pricing was reasonable. Our server was new and attentive to our experience. The food was OK. My wife asked for her Florentine eggs Benedict to come out hard and they were soft. She had to send them back to the kitchen for additional cook time. My eggs Benedict were cooked perfectly and the ham was good and the highlight of the dish. The hollandaise sauce however was watery and on the cool side. The hashbrowns were average. The star of breakfast was the corned beef hash, simply top notch. We will return for a second experience.

If you were to tell me this restaurant existed and served this kind of food in the State College…read morearea, I wouldn't believe. I'd have to see and taste myself. But it's true. It does exist and it's even better than how one might imagine based on the menu. We were warmly welcomed and sat right away despite being a little early. We were at a table that was kind of awkwardly blocking a doorway and my friend had to keep moving when people went through. No big deal. Maybe just not the best spot for a table (maybe turn it sideways). Our server was amazing. So friendly and knowledgeable. Drinks - I had a grapefruit spritz mocktail and my friend had a red that he really liked. To start, we had the charcuterie and the tartare. Both excellent. The tartare was so fresh and light with a little pop of spice. I had the trout and my friend had the short rib gnocchi. I was so jealous of his glutinous gnocchi but the trout was excellent. I'm not a bean person but the beans were so flavorful I could not help but to eat them. And then there was dessert. The affogato was perfect. There were a few ice cream flavors to choose from and we selected butterscotch. Highly recommend. The semifreddo. Don't let the garlic scare you. It blends well with the rich chocolate and the bright, juicy pomegranate. Try it! It's like nothing I've ever tasted before. Our server let us know they have brunch which will definitely be happening in the near future. Overall, the most perfect dinner from start to finish.

When we got there, the sign said Boalsburg Tavern. We later found out they're still Duffy's, but the sign had blown off. They were also quite busy, but fortunately we had made a reservation. The restaurant, in an old stone house, has a number of smaller rooms (one with a fireplace), along with a small bar and enclosed side patio. We were seated there. Even though it was a porch, it was warm as the baseboards were at our feet. Our friendly server Sara greeted us right away, but it took 30 minutes (Really!) to get our two cocktails which were not complicated. Fortunately, our baked Brie appetizer immediately followed. It was tasty and accompanied by 6 pieces of crostini. We even like the cranberry compote. I ordered the Coq Au Vin which was delicious. The stewed chicken, mixed with potatoes and carrots, sat atop mashed potatoes. Although not exactly like the French Coq Au Vin, it was still tasty. My daughter ordered the Seafood Alfredo but thought it was just okay with only a few pieces of shrimp and crabmeat mixed in with the pasta. My husband said his raviolis topped with chicken were plain. Overall, a relaxing dinner in an interesting setting although the food was mixed, and no explanation was given for the cocktails taking 30 minutes.

The atmosphere hits you right away. Dark wood, old school charm, the kind of place that feels like it has stories in the walls. It is cozy, a little dim, and exactly what you would expect from a spot celebrating a century in business. The menu is not huge, but it does not need to be. It leans heavily into comfort food, with plenty of sandwich options, but enough variety that most people will find something they like. Prices are fair, nothing over the top. I started with the soup of the day, a sausage gumbo with rice. It was flavorful and satisfying without being overly spicy or heavy. A nice warm up, especially on a rainy day. For my main, I went with Bobby D's famous beef chili topped with cheddar cheese and green onions, served with cornbread. It came out in a cast iron skillet, which was a nice touch presentation wise. Portion was solid, not massive, but definitely filling. The chili leaned a little sweet, which I personally enjoyed, with just a mild kick of heat and a lot of flavor. The cornbread was excellent and tied everything together. This is not a fancy place, and it is not trying to be. It is a comfort food spot that knows its identity and sticks to it. Great for a casual meal, especially if you are in the mood for something warm and satisfying. I would absolutely come back again. Next time, I might even give those sandwiches a shot since that seems to be their bread and butter.
