I've been going to Break Bread since they were on Rt. 14th. They are a very good alternative to the franchise fast food options around town. So I really enjoy eating here. They have good options to choose from when it comes to sandwiches and burgers. For this day I went with the Cuban sandwich, shoe string fries, sweet potatoes fries, and chicken strips. I place the order online and it says 25 - 30 mins ready for pick up. Sweet no problem as I had a grocery pick up order at Jewels. So about 25 mins passes and I arrive with my 2 year old daughter ready to pick up my food. The restaurant is inside the train station and it's a pretty cool setup. My daughter absolutely loved running around the place. I walk up to the cashier and tell them I'm here to pick up my order and the gentlemen tells me he hasn't even started my order yet and there was some issues going on in the kitchen. He said it's going to be another 10 mins before the food can be ready. Uh oh... I'm going to have to ding 1 star because this should have been updated that it's going to take a lot longer than expected. I wait the 10 mins and the food gets done and then I head home. Overall the food was good and as you can see from my pictures it's a not a traditional cuban sandwich but it was good, and I'd get it again. Fries were hot and crispy and my daughter enjoyed her chicken strips. Breaking Bread has always been a good alternative for grabbing lunch in Crystal Lake. read more

I wish i could give this place 6 stars because 5 isn't enough. Food came out fast, and hot! I ordered a caesar wrap with a side of onion rings. To start the wrap to filling ratio was perfection, not too much wrap to where it felt like i wasn't getting what i paid for and not an imbalance of a single filling inside, every bite tasted great and had every ingredient- LOVED IT! Onion rings were fried beautifully and battered perfectly- buttery and savory and just so so good each bite and fantastic portion, ate every one! My girlfriend ordered the Turkey Club and side of string fries. We ate off each others plates after discovering how each of our own food was literally the greatest thing we've had in a while lol. Turkey club had a refreshing taste and was so good especially loved the 3 pieces of deli bread! Shoe string fires were fried perfectly, not excess oil or salt and were hot and fresh, personally loved all the different lengths! Lastly and best of all, the hospitality!!! From start to finish of this meal the atmosphere was perfect, music not too loud ( awesome music taste btw ) air conditioning was nice, we came in and we were the only ones eating but still very nice. The older gentleman who took our order was funny, sweet, and attentive!!! really liked him and the other younger person with the green mohawk was also attentive and nice!! Side note that i liked, after ordering up at the front , i wasn't pressured to give a tip- i would have done it anyways but the added touch he just skipped over that for some reason stuck with me in a good way! They kept taking down my review on them for Google so here's to yelp. This place treated me with the worst experience I've dealt with and still refuse to go back. I ordered from them my regular burger with extra cheese spread that came on it. They messed up and put extra slices of cheese which is fine I asked if they could fix it and the cashier gave me nothing but attitude for their mistake. At this point I was done and just asked for a refund so I can eat somewhere else. She went to the back to grab someone for the refund he asked what was wrong and he just said why should I have to pay for someone's food? That made no sense cause why should I be charged for something that wasn't made how I ordered I said.... he gave me my refund claimed to be the owner who is not the owner he was like 18 or 19 years old. As I walked out he yelled have a shitty day. I turned around and told him look you're not the owner here your father probably is and I've known the owner since they opened there first shop. I still to this day refuse to go back to any of there places. To the actual owner your just a fake who puts on a smile but based on how you hire employees and ignore day 1 customers I know how you truly are. Whatever it takes to make you money right? Ordered a large latte and the cup is only filled about 2/3. Come on! Almost $6 for coffee and you can even fill it up? Update: I went to the barista and told her that when people pay for a large coffee, they expect to get it. I showed her that about 1/3 of my coffee was missing and she said it was because of the foam. Sure. It's because you put too much foam in to save on milk usage. I was excited to try Breaking Bread on my quest to support local businesses. We had heard a few friends taking mentioning the ate here and enjoyed it. So we wanted to given them a shot. Ordering online was overall smooth but there are not any pictures which made it hard to know what your ordering. That made it a little tricky. We are vegetarian and felt the menu was a little limited for us. But had to try the pretzel cheese curds since we heard good things about them. I ordered the pretzel cheese curds with a side of honey mustard ( + 99 cents) and was not a good start when I did not receive the side of the mustard. I ordered the balsamic grill cheese with a side of white cheddar Mac n cheese. The sandwich looked extremely light on the mozzarella and the peppers were not very good. The balsamic was not really present or had no taste. Either way I was disappointed in the sandwich. The Mac n Cheese on side was a bit of a let down as well. There was not any cheese really?!? You walk in and the atmosphere is immediately light. Brae is beautiful and wearing a smiley faced shirt that says "always optimistic". Jason Meaz is on in the background singing "I won't worry my life away". There is a bell with a smiley face on it and immediately I decide I want to dine in. Their menu is robust with a lot of good looking things. Then I see Award Winning Italian Sub and I'm immediately curious. Italian subs are okay... like the ones I know are the ones from subway mostly... So I ask about it and Brae says it's delicious so I ordered it along with pickle fries upon her recommendation. The pickle spear fries came out hot and the sandwich I have decided to give my official GOAT (Greatest of All Time) award to the Breaking Bread Catering and Deli. It was succulent, fresh, great dressing, bread, quality of meat and peppers... it was perfect. This is a family business and John was great to talk to... young guy and part owner. We ordered sandwiches for lunch. My wife got the Rueben, my son got the Chicken and Bacon, and I got their version of a beef dip (they call it juicy beef). My wife loved the Rueben (she felt it was among the best she had had), and my son liked his Chicken and Bacon. I thought mine was just OK; the sandwich doesn't come with any au jus (it is a sandwich dipped). It is more like an Italian Beef but not as much beef and I wasn't a fan of the bread. Stopped in here recently while shopping in the area on December 23rd. Initially we were looking forward to a Portillo's Beef sandwich but the line for pick up was crazy long so I reached out to Yelp for help in finding a good sanwich in the area which led us to here. While looking at the online menu I noticed s Rueben on the menu and they had me. I also ordered the daily soup which was tasty, a not to salty vegetable soup. The Rueben had good flavor but lacked balance in that it was assembled wrong. I hate when this happens and it happens all to often at sandwich shops. My first bite was full of sauce and kraut. The next had too much bread and not much else. Finally some meat! I think I got what I would call a balanced bite only once. Had I not been eating in my car I would have taken this sandwich apart and built it properly. Service was excellent and I recommend the fried avocado bites. As another Yelper has pointed out, there really isn't anything on the menu that our family has tried that we didn't love. I initially knew about Breaking Bread in Cary through a coworker, who brought the takeout/delivery menu to work for all of us to peruse. Everything sounded either very good or just typical to sandwich shops, so I decided to try it one day. Holy crap, it was delicious? The first time I ordered, I got an Italian grilled cheese and was shocked by just how tasty an adult grilled cheese was. Normally, the only grilled cheeses that I see at a restaurant are for kids, so this gamble was definitely worth it. Fast forward to a few months after this first encounter. I read that they're opening a location in Crystal Lake that was not going to be too far from my house. Score! The location is very nice and is never super busy. It's a great restaurant for kids as well as I asked to just order a plain hotdog since my toddler is a communist, apparently (how do you eat a hotdog without anything on it? Ugh). My go-to sandwich is the shaved fried chicken. I have tried many other options in the menu, and I would have to say that anything they make is amazing. The food is great, the staff makes it amazing. Classic deli food with some nice modern twists, and it's all fantastic. We've eaten here a ton of times and never been disappointed. The sides are all so good that we order way to many of them. The cheese curds and fried pickles are amazing. Beyond the food, the owner seems to be there working the register and the kitchen nearly every time we're there. He just seems so happy to deal with every customer. You really just feel like this is one of your family members that just wants to feed you because it makes him happy. We ordered from Breaking Bread today for the first time, wanting to support local businesses during the Covid crisis. Delivery was quick and the food was delicious. The Reuben and Fried Chicken & Bacon sandwiches were really tasty, along with the house made chips. I was a little underwhelmed by the turkey focaccia, i expected more from the bread and I couldn't detect any kind of sauce on it--it could've used some cheese or some sort of mayo or vinaigrette for added flavor, but it was by no means a bad sandwich. Found this place in 2019 and was excited to be able to support a local business. Now in 2020, we're happier than ever to have this shop as our go-to for weekend lunches. They are exceptionally accommodating. In fact, now that I place orders for delivery, a few times I put "pick-up" by mistake. They actually called and asked if I was correct and made their way out to deliver my food anyway. Above and beyond. And that's just the customer service. The food always arrives warm and delicious. This place is horribly dirty. It needs a deep clean from the bathrooms to the front. The soda machine is gross and I doubt gets cleaned often. No kids menu paid $5 just for an grilled cheese for my 4 year old and had to pay separately for frieS and a drink. I've been wanting to try it out for a while now but never was in Crystal Lake at the right time (we live in Woodstock). As a whole, I believe they deserve a 5/5 but I'll go over each item we ordered individually! (long review) We ordered: Mac & Cheese Bites, Curly Fries, Pretzel Cheese Curds, Home Chips, Battered Chicken Chunks, Fried Dill Pickle Spears, Double Down Dog, and a Mega Fudge Brownie. The Mac bites were good. They weren't oily and were very "mac-n-cheesy". I personally am not a huge Mac fan, so I gave them a 3.5/5 but my partner gave a 5/5. I think they are better than Tommy's for reference - that's the only place I have to compare them to. The Curly Fries, yummm, were not really crispy - WHICH I LOVE and would expect [from delivery to another town seeing as there was a lot of hot food that created steam in the paper bag]. I give them a solid 4/5, and if you dip them in the cheese sauce (which I recommend) then I'd bump them to a 5/5! The Pretzel Curds were yummy. I give them another 3.5/5 and my partner gives them a 5/5. I prefer curds from a place like Antioch Pizza, Chili's or Buffalo Wild Wings. I was expecting more of a soft pretzel situation as well but they were just semi-crunchy little nuggets of what I guess were pretzel coated? Everyone was in agreement that there wasn't much pretzel-flavor about it but still good. The Home Chips... ohhhh.. my... GOSH. Please order five with extra sauce because they are AMAZING. I wasn't going to get them but was then convinced last second. They are crispy and very delicious. Not too salty and the dill sauce throws it into overdrive on flavor. I'd order JUST for these and it is why I cannot give this place anything below a overall. They are THAT good and I am so picky about chips. Battered Chicken Chunks - very tasty and easily a 5/5. The meat was tender, juicy and the batter wasn't oily. They tasted fresh and didn't require a dipping sauce... although I'd recommend the dill sauce I mentioned above Fried Dill Pickle Spears: a big surprise! We were expecting a pickle quartered or cut into eighths and fried but what we received was MUCH better. It was a bunch of little pickle strands that were perfectly fried. They arrived crispy and were super yummy! If you haven't guessed it by now, I also recommend you dip these into the dill sauce too. Definitely a 5/5 from everyone here. Double Down Dog: 12 inches of hot dog, chicken, cheese, ranch, and bacon on French bread for $11.99. The foodie in me was very excited about this but it ended up being at the bottom of my yum-list. The bread was good, the chicken was just like deli-meat it seemed and there was one strip of bacon placed onto the top of each 6" portion. The cheese and ranch were also scarce but it was still okay overall. I'd give it a 3/5 and maybe try it again in the future. It was yummy but it just didn't come together completely for us. I was expecting something like chopped, possibly breaded chicken breast, and more of a ranch presence I think. The chicken is supposed to be 'fried chicken' but tasted more like a deep-fried butterball deli turkey situation. Mega Fudge Brownie - get it and eat it with a fork. I don't know WHY it tasted better with a fork but it did. I give it a 5/5 for sure. The frosting seemed whipped and the brownie itself was very moist and cakey. I had the roasted pepper burrito from the vegetarian menu and it's just awesome . Fresh veggies , deli style cheese , seems to be handmade tortilla also. The menu has something for everyone . This time I wish I could give this place zero stars not for the food because the food is great, but zero for the manager who hung up on me four times today. I tried to order some food but George who is the manager hung up four times. Why I am still a bit perplexed over that. On the fifth try he answered and said "you hung up on me." Are you kidding me I told him? I tried 5 times and you are being really rude. Therefore I will not order from your location anymore. George retorted with "good. now have a good day." Is this how this company treats their customers? I have ordered from there since they opened their doors. Now I will never step foot nor will I even place a delivery I also received a call from the owner Chris that said he stood there but didn't hear what was said. Really that is fresh. Buyer beware! Small place but that's okay. I waited until I tried this place a few times to give it a review. After 3-4 visits I thought it was time. I really enjoyed the sandwiches and want to try more things on the menu. I mostly ordered the Herb turkey focaccia and thought it was very good. Curly fries we're really good too. As far as sandwich places in the area this place has good value and quality. They even deliver for free if you're nearby according to the sign on their door. That's pretty rare. Then there is the service. I would say is some of the most friendly group of people working there. Always quick with a smile and polite. Have yet to find a thing my family doesn't love! The staff is so friendly and helpful. Very happy they came to Crystal Lake. Cary seemed so far when I was craving fried pickles!!! I love the fried pickles here more than any other place I have tried. Oh, the Ham and Salami with the fried egg...have them add some dijon=perfect! As others have said the Dill dip is a great addition to Fry's, their chips, and many sandwiches. The staff is attentive, friendly, and quick to give advice on what to try if you are unsure. Sandwiches are made quickly and delivered directly to your table. The fried then shaved chicken sandwich with feta pepper spread and the Reuben are standouts. Overall a wonderful place to get a meal. Depending on what I get the cost may be $1-2 more than say a sandwich from Panera but the quality and quantity is huge and that extra dollar is staying in our community with a local business owner who employs locals. read more

I love Breaking Bread! I used to frequent the one a lot in Cary because I worked there. My first time was not a great experience - but they more than made it right, which made me want to try them again! What happened was I watched a girl make my salad. She opened up a new bag of salad greens. I took it to go, so was back at work when I opened it up to eat. Most of it was wilted and soggy. I called them just to let them know, so they wouldn't continue to make salads with that batch of lettuce. I believe I spoke to an owner, and she offered to replace it and bring it to me (without even asking where I was!) I declined, because I had meetings, so she told me that my next meal there would be free. I waited a while, and then decided to try again. Every time since has been wonderful, with fresh, delicious food. So the first experience was clearly a fluke. Stuff happens. I love their chicken salad on greens. Their sandwiches are great, and most can be made on gluten free bread. The tuna salad is delicious, as well as the Reubens. A co-worker told me about their homemade potato chips and dill sauce - THEY ARE DANGEROUS! So freaking good! Love this place, and so happy they have a 2nd location in CL! read more

My girlfriend and I eat out quite a bit. This place blew us away with its low pricing and phenomenal food. We have visited multiple times and try something new every visit. Everything on the menu is unique and delicous. The food is reason enough to keep you coming back but the staff is some of the most friendly and personable I have ever met. My mom and I used to go to the breaking bread in Cary and were SO excited to hear that they were coming to Crystal Lake as well, this is by far one of the best places to eat in CL. If you're wanting a sandwich, burger, soup, or even a hot dog, they have you covered with such great house made food. Everything I've ever had here is amazing. Wanted to love this place but the buffalo fried chicken sandwich was not good. It looked and tasted like shredded chicken lunch meat and not actual fried chicken. And the taco burger was a frozen patty, not a fresh formed patty as you would expect from a catering/mom n pop place. It was not a good burger. I ordered the ham & salami sandwich on a pretzel bun and it was actually very good. Not sure of other items except the lobster bisque soup which was good but not exceptional.
