For an escape room experience in the states, this is a good spot. We did the submarine room. The staff is constantly monitoring you and guiding you a bit without giving too much. My first escape room experience was in Portugal and Lisbon and I really enjoyed those. The puzzles there were more intricate and the props were more thought out and well put together. Comparing my experiences, this place does get the job done, but I felt it was a bit too easy and this was only my third escape room experience. The price is reasonable for the DC/DMV market. Compared to overseas, it was more than double. Still a fun experience and glad they provide an option to try it out in the area. read more

I absolutely love this place. My friends love to explore escape rooms when we go out of town but nothing compares to this Breakout Games here in town. The rooms are fairly challenging but nothing a good group can't break out of or at the very least have a fun time trying to do so. This time around was for my birthday, we were paired with our game master Roxanne who was SO funny. We tried out The Kidnapping which was so immersive (literally handcuffed and blindfolded, which you can choose whether or not to have btw!!). We really enjoy the games here, done them all! During the most recent trip, however, we spent a large portion of our booked time on a lock that a previous customer had disassembled and reassembled so it no longer worked for the puzzle. We let the game master and manager know but it was not addressed during our time. After the hour, we took the time to show them what happened, which they confirmed. We were kindly offered a discount on a return trip or refund, which we accepted, however neither ever materialized. read more

First time doing an escape room, and definitely not my last! What a fun time. Participated as part of a Yelp Elite event, so we were paired with two other folks we didn't know. Fortunately we quickly clicked as a team, because teamwork is an essential part of this process. My wife and I love to do logic puzzles, so we thought this would be a breeze. Uh, no. Made it out with literally just a minute to spare. The room and the game were thoughtfully set up and really pushed you to think creatively. The clues on demand from the game master were perfect. So I have one thing checked off my bucket list. This experience was really fun! The employees here was above and beyond excellent customer service. I never felt bad about paying almost $30 for this. It was well worth spent for the perfect experience. So me and my group did Museum Heist and I want to be honest, this isn't the best one to do if this is your group first time doing it. It was fun but it was a lot. We had to ask our Host for plenty of clues. He was nice tho. I want to do this again. I want to do them all actually because that's just how much fun this was. read more

While having our cousin's weekend in Maryland, my cousin brought up doing an escape room. It's the perfect activity for a group of people to do. Plus it was super close to his house. We picked Operation: Casino because it seemed the most fun. The description for the kidnapping had us uneasy.. No one is blindfolding me! It was all of our first time doing an escape room. I didn't know what to expect going in. To be honest, at first I didn't think we were going to have fun but ended up having a good time even though we didn't 'breakout' the room. We were told that was the closest anyone has gotten to escaping the room. If we just asked for help as soon as we started, we would've made it out!! I blame our silly pride. My son has been asking to do a breakout FOREVER. So for his 9th birthday I took him, his brother, 4 friends and another Mom to do Island Escape. As soon as I purchased the tickets I thought, "What am I thinking!!!" But we set the boys expectations, made sure they got some wiggles out before hand, and made them repeat the rules!" He reiterated all the rules, explained everything really well, and intervened when we asked and sometimes when we didn't (and boy were we glad he did!)! They did an exceptional job and we had an absolute blast! THANK YOU Note about kids: We didn't break out, we were 2 clues away. It was fun, but I do think it was tough for them at that age, regardless of it being an easy room. They were really disappointed that they didn't break out and focused on the outcome a little too much. Of your kiddo gets disappointed really easily, then I'd say wait a little longer. read more

I've gone through at least half a dozen different Escape Rooms, so I feel fairly qualified to give my thoughts here. First - signing up for the room was super simple online, with many different times available and the ability to book way out in advance. Our party got there and were greeted by Will. He was incredibly helpful and friendly the whole time through - answering any questions we put to him (half our party were first-timers!) We ended up picking "The Kidnapping" for our Escape Room. I'll speak vaguely to not ruin the surprises, but it had some really cool elements from the very beginning. Atmosphere for the room was solid. The puzzles and clues themselves? Really good. They were challenging, but still made sense as you solved them. (I've been to other rooms where puzzle solutions - even after the game is over - are confusing and convoluted. Not here!) The room also had several fun mechanics which I also won't spoil, but the variety was great. We DID make it out (with less than 2 minutes left!), but needed a few hints from Will. He gave just enough advice to nudge us along and keep the fun going. All and all awesome night, and would look forward to another one of their rooms!! read more

ESCAPETHEROOMers are excited to finally try out Breakout Games this July 2019. Today, we arrived at their Timonium, MD location. They currently have 44 locations in the US and 1 in South Africa! This location is located in between two large parking lots so there's plenty of spaces available. If you are hungry, you can easily grab something to eat before or after in the complex. As we entered the "Zen" tree pathway, we easily saw the big Breakout Games sign from far away. The lobby is quite spacious with plenty of seating, complimentary water, and a good selection of merchandise for you to look at while you wait for your game. We were greeted by the general manager who personally served as our game master. This location currently has 7 escape games and we chose to do their newest room "Runaway Train". As the game master explained the normal escape room etiquettes to us, we were eager to start our cross-continental journey on their Breakout Express. With the visual effects, sound, and the well-made set design (the seats felt like genuine leather!), we instantly felt immersed with an urgent situation. As the radicals took over the conductor's cabin to plant explosives to denote at Central Station, our mission is to stop the attack and bring all the passengers to safety. We liked how they incorporated the passing of the train stops as a timer versus the normal count down. We were stumped on our weakness once again: searching for things. We could not find this one item for probably a whole 5 minutes! We were asking for assistance, but our gamemaster wasn't going to give up the answer that easy considering his military background (you better be on your good behavior when you play his rooms! He's also a sword forger!), we had to earn it. We finally found it along with a "duh" moment and rushed through the rest of the game. There was a good amount of traditional and cool tech puzzles that we haven't seen before. We liked how the puzzles stuck with the theme of the room and utilized what we would need to do in a train in this situation. We did get out with just the two of us with minute to spare. The minor suggestion we have for Breakout would probably be for the room design. If we can had a bit more "surprising" aspects or "wow" moments (without giving away too much), it would really add on to the experience. Other than that, it was a pretty solid room. Since we will be in VA, we decided to try their "Island Escape" room at the Breakout Games DC location (this is how it's listed on their website, but the actual location is in VA). I have been getting some buzz about this concept, so I had to check it out. Seven of us tried the kidnapping room. It was some serious fun. Different people stepping up at different times. Impossible clues suddenly making sense. Real drama. The hour flew by. We were just a few minutes short of solving the whole thing, but I was amazed how far we got. So it is a challenge for most groups, but not an impossible challenge. It brought our group together, almost like when you face down a real crisis. By far one of the best family adventures ever. We took my son for his birthday. It was challenging adventure but when ever we got stuck the game master always was there to offer a clue to point us in the right direction. As for covid cleaning this place is on top of it everything was clean and the place uses a bleach solution to make sure. Update for my review. I've played two games at this location now, Hostage and Operation: Casino. Both were interesting and different from other games I've played. The first I played with 4 people and I thought was perhaps a little short but still a good time. The latter was really fun with a group of 8 - it definitely took some thinking, but the gamemasters pay attention to what's going on and are super helpful with giving clues when needed. tl;dr: Fun room, but some puzzles didn't make a lot of logical sense. Would come back to try a different room. The longer version: Came here with some friends to do the kidnapping room! We were there bright and early, and there was a Starbucks nearby so we dashed out for some coffee beforehand. You're not allowed to bring drinks into the room, so the operators were nice enough to keep what we couldn't finish in the office while we made our great escape. We were blindfolded and handcuffed for this room, which was a first for me. For the most part, the clues made logical sense and it was fun solving the riddles. However, I do think that the overall structure of the puzzle was too linear (so that all of us had to cluster around a small piece of paper because there was only one thing left to work on). There were also a couple clues that took a couple leaps of logic to arrive at the answer. I really appreciated how there were unlimited hints and our operator was super helpful when we were stuck on some of the trickier puzzles. I would recommend this room and would definitely come back to try some of the other rooms! read more

We tried the Kidnapping room on our recent trip to Baltimore and I'd have to say we were pretty impressed. I was worried that with only 4 of us we might have trouble solving the room, but we actually did it with time to spare. The room is set up well with great decor, props, and ambiance. There's a couple of surprises awaiting you when the room starts which were really neat (I won't spoil those here.) The employees we interacted with were great including our game-runner who provided us with clues when we were stumped. I always appreciate a room that seems so hard that you'll never defeat it, but then all the pieces start falling into place as you proceed through it. We visited Breakout Games to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had all been to escape rooms before but were excited to try a new place and the Haunted Mansion room. We made it out with less than ten minutes to spare! The room itself was full of exciting and thought provoking twists and our guide, Ian was knowledgeable and helpful. The facility was clean and the instructions were clear. They readily accommodated our large group (seven people) and for the most part, it felt like we had the place to ourselves, though I know they were running other rooms. Can you accept the challenge of a room escape? It's not just another boring night out. If you're up for the challenge then Breakout is ready for you. We got a group of friends together, looking for something a little more entertaining than our usual wine and revelry. Breakout did not disappoint. We played "The Island" and it tasked all of our clever brains to the limit. With only seconds to spare in our hour, we successfully navigated the clues and made it out! If you have never been to a room escape before, don't fear: you're not actually locked in the room (so no need to worry if you find that halfway through you need a potty break). There's nothing unsafe about it at all. It's great for friends, great for team building, great for couples looking for a new adventure. You can come with a group or meet some new people there. They have a great system working for providing clues: you choose if and when you want to receive them. If you get stuck and want a clue so that you can get full enjoyment out of your time, your game master is there for you. Or you can choose to forego the clues and really test you mental mettle. Hidden at the back of the shopping center (and a little around the side), it's a bit of a chore to find Breakout but once you do they have a great system for getting you into the game. It's recommended to purchase your tickets in advance as there are a limited number of rooms and a capacity of people for each. Arrive early because if they are busy and you're late for your slot you may not get to finish your hour...then again, if you're a real smartypants then you may not need the whole hour. We tried our luck at the following four: "The Runaway Train", "The Kidnapping", "Do Not Disturb" and "Hostage". Breakout Games Escape Rooms are all 60 minute experiences and can accommodate up to 7-8 individuals. Prior to beginning each escape experience you are introduced to your "Game Master", the individual whom will provide clues and assist you as needed. Once you enter the Escape Room you will watch a brief video backstory which sets the mood and outlines the predicament you are in. "Runaway Train" Escape Time: 4 minutes remaining Difficulty: Moderate difficulty Backstory: "You've booked the trip of a lifetime; a cross-continental journey on The Breakout Express. A good bit of math was utilized which slowed us down slightly. The ending to this escape room has a really unique twist. We recommend any Escape Room enthusiast to give Runaway Train a try! A heart-pumping thriller from start to finish, you can expect a rush of non-stop fun." Feedback: Prior to entering The Kidnapping Escape Room all participants are blindfolded. Unable to see what awaits you as you enter the darkened room your heart can't help but begin to race in fear. Once removing our blindfolds we truly felt immersed in a Kidnappers holding grounds. In this room we kept a rather swift pace, solving the clues and riddles thrown our way with ease. Definitely a unique escape room to say the least. Can you and your team beat The Kidnapping? "Do Not Disturb" Escape Time: unable to escape in time Difficulty: Recommended for experienced escape room players Backstory: "A recent string of kidnappings has awakened old fears in the people of Breakout City. You've tracked the Kidnapper to a run-down motel on the outskirts of town. Unfortunately, he was expecting you, and now you're caught in his twisted web of games. This investigation-gone-wrong will send your mind spinning as you try to save his next victims... Or become one yourself." Feedback: We had received several rave reviews for the Do Not Disturb escape room. Out of the four total escape rooms we participated in, Do Not Disturb was our most looked forward to room but turned out to be the most difficult room we participated in! Once locked inside the escape room we truly felt as if we were in a real life hotel room. Our group got off to a slow start but eventually got our wheels turning. We stumbled and got tied up on several involved puzzles which ate away majority of our escape time. Before we knew it we only had a few moments remaining. Staff at Breakout broke the news that we only made it about halfway through (boy we were epic failures)! From the sounds of it, the second half of this escape room has some really awesome touches that'll make any Escape Room enthusiast ooh and ahh in excitement. "Hostage" Survived or Died: Survived! Difficulty: Suitable for beginners Backstory: "While on a flight, your plane is hijacked and you lose consciousness as the cabin depressurizes. Later you wake up and realize you're trapped, handcuffed to your friends, in the hijackers headquarters. Can you lose your handcuffs, find out the details behind their hijacking and escape before time's up?" Feedback: There's something about beginning an escape room handcuffed and blindfolded that gets your blood pumping. Hostage by far had some of the coolest riddles, puzzles, clues, etc that we've seen in escape rooms. Their use of technology in this room blew us away. We kept a rather steady rhythm and were able to succeed with ease (this was a good thing after our epic fail at "Do Not Disturb")!
