If efficiency and good beer had a very cool, well-designed child, it would be Breakside Brewery Slabtown. This place somehow manages to feel laid-back and dialed-in at the same time. The standout feature for me was the QR code ordering system: scan, order, and close out your tab whenever you're ready, all from your phone. In a busy restaurant, this feels less like a gimmick and more like a small act of genius. No awkward eye contact trying to flag someone down, no waiting to pay while mentally calculating how close you are to just leaving cash and hoping for the best. That said, if you're not in the mood to embrace your phone as your server, the traditional route is still there. You can walk up to the bar or catch one of the servers floating around. It's a smart setup that solves the "we're busy and maybe a little understaffed" problem without making it your problem. Food-wise, I went with the meatball sub (on special). Handmade pork and beef meatballs, clearly done by someone who knows what they're doing, and the kind of sandwich that requires both commitment and a few extra napkins. No regrets. I paired it with the Breakside Pilsner, which landed comfortably on the higher end of "good"Not life-changing, but absolutely something you'd order again without hesitation, especially if you're settling in for a while. Overall, it's a place that feels like it understands how people actually want to eat and drink right now. Efficient without being cold, flexible without being chaotic, and just cool enough to make you feel like you picked the right spot.

Chicken tenders with a side of Caesar salad

I'll start with the beer since it is a brewery. The beer selection was good, all local. I had the Breakside IPA and the Bayside IPA. They were both full of flavor, I was very impressed. I also ordered the chicken tenders with a side of their beer battered sidewinder fries. The tenders were average and I didn't receive my fries, I got a Caesar salad instead. I was ok with it thinking it might be a sign to eat a salad instead. A couple minutes later, my fries showed up. They were really good, probably the best part of the meal. The ambience was kinda loud but not enough to stop you from having a conversation. It's definitely a place to stop by if you're in the area. It wasn't too crowded to the point where I walked in and was able to find seating at the bar. Overall, it was a chill place to be at but nothing really stood out for me.

We came for wiener week. They were busy but we got seated almost immediately at the bar. We ordered nachos, their special pizza hotdog, and the burger with beer combo. Sadly we asked for the blue cheese for the burger to be on the side since I don't like blue cheese, but they put it in the burger. So I can't speak to the burger. My fiancé liked it though! The nachos were good, but missing some sort of sauce since it lacked flavor. Otherwise, this was still a pretty good meal! The beers here are great!

Yummy food, good beer, I would like to order thru a person instead of a qr code but this way I don't have to tip - We will be back, try the dirty fries!

We originally planned to go to the restaurant across the street 'hey Luigi' but were told we needed reservations. It was a lot smaller than we thought. We walked around a few blocks and stopped in at like 3 other places and everywhere was busy, with a wait time. This was Valentine's Day about 18:30. We saw this place and I liked that there was no was sitting outside by the fire. I love having the space to ourselves. The last time my friend and I hung out we had the fire to ourselves so it was nice to have it again. I have anxiety when I'm in public so having the space outside to ourselves was perfect. The girl that was serving us was great, I don't remember her name. The bartender guy was a bit sassy waved me down saying I had to come to him to order. SMH lol. We both did their $15 deal, beer and burger. The burger was tasty, typical bar burger. The dip was ok, the pita bread was good, the beer was delicious. We would go back. It's a cute clean spot. Their bathroom was clean too which was nice.

Solid brewery with a great selection of food as well! They have a ton of seating inside, outside and upstairs. Great for large groups The food choices are typical pub affair, with PDX flair The staff was chill and welcoming!

Came here while in town for a brief stop. Had walked by a day prior and noticed how busy it was. Felt like a beer and some grub so thought to hit em up. Came in on a weekday and quickly greeted and offered any open spot. Lots of great beer and a variety of things on the menu. We ordered the Nachos, pretzel, and some burgers and of course some lovely brews. Beer came quickly and cold and crisp. Pretzel was amazing and dough was on point. Nachos and burgers were all made perfectly. Well worth trip if you re in the area

Went to here for lunch yesterday! Sat on the patio and it was beautiful. Plenty of outdoor seating. Breakside has a nice extensive menu, that will cater towards meat lovers and vegetarians. The usual, but better end, brewery, food. I had the Cobb salad, which was fresh, flavorful, and well done. Breakside also has my favorite beers in Portland. They also have a nice wine list, and cocktails for those that do not like beer. They have a QR code available for ordering. Which makes it nice. Definitely a go to place for lunch, dinner, and drinks.

The I Purple You Fruit Beer! Loved this one!

Once again Breakside Brewery is amazing! I haven't ever been to this location before until recently and the beer is as creative, refreshing and fun as it ever has. We got two different beers on this outing here. We started off with the Shades of Purple Pale Ale. This was a nice one for sure with it's flavors of floral, spicy, brown sugar and cinnamon. It was also an extremely aromatic beer too! But our favorite for this sitting was a fruit beer called I Purple You. Quite literally it's Purple (or pink) and it was a real joy to drink. It had the presence in the flavor profile of Graham Cracker and berries. Light bodied and refreshing which is what we desired on this particular day. Breakside continues to keep their beers interesting and experimental with it's beers and that is always a good thing as far as Steve and I are concerned!

Yes! Slabtown is open for dine-in.

Are dogs allowed on the patio?

Yes, but only on the Patio

Does anybody know if this location has a kids play area? Or anything to entertain kids? Thanks :-).

I do not recall one and would have as we have two little ones that would have been all over that. Great kids menu and they certainly understand the fact that kiddos are ticking time bombs so get their food out quickly concept that eludes many…

I am a big fan of the indoor/outdoor flow for the space, especially on nice weather afternoons like we have had recently. Outdoor seating is limited, so be prepared to sit inside. Interior seating is not the most comfortable, with former church bleachers that are quite bouncy or large and hard game of thrones-like high chairs. The team is super friendly and will send you to the food station or the bar depending on your needs, and, with the good quality Mexican cuisine on service, you'll want a taco or two. The brewery specializes in Hazy/IPAs, to come expecting to enjoy these PNW basics. I swapped between them and non-alcoholic options since hazies are not my favorite but everyone I was with loved them. The restrooms are clean and there are plenty of bike stands to make this a car-free journey.

The Loss of a True Neighborhood Anchor…read more For years, this coffee house was the primary reason I loved living in this neighborhood. Under its original stewardship, it provided a rare "third place"--a vital social anchor where writers, neighbors, and local faces created a true sense of home. It was a space where you could spend two hours writing in the morning, knowing the flow would be punctuated by the pleasant interruptions of catching up with familiar locals. When the new ownership took over, I eagerly supported them, hoping that inclusive community spirit would endure. Unfortunately, the culture has shifted toward a rigid, punitive customer service framework that completely lacks the ability to navigate human communication differences or de-escalate sensitive situations. A simple, polite morning request to lower the early morning music unexpectedly scaled into an antagonistic confrontation with young staff. Then, in a subsequent incident, instead of a calm intervention, during a conversation, I was publicly yelled at across a crowded room by another young employee. Their continued rude behavior pushed me past a breaking point out of sheer anxiety, and I uncharacteristically lost my temper, resorted to profanity, and walked out. While I take full ownership of my part--reacting defensively under that immense stress--the owners' ultimate solution was to permanently ban a long-term, 5-plus years loyal patron rather than engage in a mutual conversation about what caused the friction in the first place. For an establishment that projects an image of neighborhood inclusivity, the reality is a stark lack of grace. By prioritizing a punitive model over community care, the new management has hollowed out the very environment that made this place a longtime, beloved local fixture. It is deeply saddening and has been a great upset to lose such a meaningful part of my daily neighborhood routine, but those who value a truly inclusive, understanding neighborhood environment should be aware of how the culture here has fundamentally changed.
