Probably one the more iconic taprooms/breweries in the area. I always find parking hard in this area of Slabtown and this place gets pretty packed during peak hours. They do have big tables, great beers, and a very family-friendly environment. I've been here with a large group, including a 3-year-old and a baby. We still had a blast. We stopped in having seen that the beer is top rated in Portland. Well, it was good beer but served on the warm side - ESL I for the IPAs - and none of the beers really stood out for their style. But those nachos!!! You know how you get nachos at a place and only the top layer is loaded with goodies And cheesiness? Welp these nachos were clearly created by a nacho aficionado- with layers and layers of goodies. We totally filled up on these nachos which wound up being our dinner! I mean look at that picture!!! This brewery came highly reviewed in a travel blog, all I can say is wow. What a commercialized establishment. Out of all the breweries we went to in Portland this one was the largest and most impersonal experience. The beer was NOT it. We are from Colorado, we love us some IPAs and when I tell you we could not find one we liked, I mean it. We didn't finish not one beer in the tasting menu. But, what sealed the deal was watching a bartender who was serving the couple next to us catch a whole attitude with them simply because they didn't understand what she was explaining to them. Hard to believe but we came here to get a bite to eat and were told by hostess that there was a 'wait list' for tables ( there was not a soul in sight waiting - many open tables).. when asked how long if we put our names on 'wait list' she told us 'I don't know'.. but you are welcome to go upstairs but you have to order downstairs at the bar and then go upstairs (seriously?).. she clearly did not want to seat us and was borderline racist in her disdain for us.. as we started to leave ( there are other more professional restaurants in this town ) a different hostess hears us say we were going to write this experience up on YELP. Guess what? Tables suddenly were available. Management- unless you don't care about your brand - train your staff and fire that hostess . My husband & I visited for lunch yesterday. I had heard all sorts of good things! They have contactless ordering - kinda nice - but that loses some of the customer service aspects and they require that you bus your own tables! It makes me question the need for tipping. Normally I'm a generous tipper - at least 20-25%, but honestly, what am I paying 20% for if I don't have the opportunity to ask questions while ordering and I have to clean up my own dishes and clear the table?? He had their chicken appetizer. He was pleased and there were 5 full-sized fried chicken legs! I ordered their nachos and requested no jalapeños in the app. The tortillas were big & thick and very crispy - delish! They were dusted with a spicy coating - yum! They didn't put sliced jalapeños on the top, but it DID have chopped jalapeños sprinkled in?? NO jalapeños means NO jalapeños - zero of any kind. It was also LOADED with sliced olives. I mean, the description said there were olives on it, but there was nary 1 in the photo - no big deal, right? I don't love them, but I'll tolerate a few of them. Well, this looked like they put a full 8oz can of olives on, in, and around the dish. Like seriously- every single chip was covered. I dont mean 3-5 slices (which would be plenty for me) of olives on a tortilla chip with some melted cheese - I'm talking about 10-20 olive slices! I swear there was more olives than cheese, so it wasn'tas if I could just pick a few out and it was fine... I don't dislike olives - but it was ridiculous. It really was a shame. Overall I wouldn't come back for any kind of meal - the choices were extremely limited, but the pineapple cider was great! read more

My partner and I came here because we were craving some bar food. They had a solid amount of vegetarian options so we went for the pretzel and nachos. The pretzel was massive and super delicious! It had a good beer mustard and a really tasty cheese dip. My partner loved it. My personal favorite, the nachos! They were soooo good! They were layered really well so each chip had toppings and they were loaded up. Breakside is not skipping out on portion size that's for sure! I did sample a couple of IPAs which I enjoyed but ended up going with a soda instead because I wasn't feeling like a filling beer with the food we ordered. We stopped by Breakside to try some beers while staying in Slabtown. It was walking distance from our Airbnb, which was great! It was pretty busy when we went- we ordered at the counter and took our flight outside to drink it. They have stand up tables in the street, where it is blocked off. All the outside tables were full of people eating. The downside of this place was that there were limitations on what you could order as part of the flight, they were also out of two beers. They had a ton of IPAs, so if that is your jam, check this place out. read more

Sadly, I think I've been to Breakside for the last time. I've gone several times over the past six years and things have just steadily declined. We went for dinner tonight and were met with the following dealbreakers: 1. Contactless ordering and payment- just a personal preference, but I hate this. You can order at the bar though, which is what we did. 2. Unkind bartender- the bartender spoke to me brusquely and dismissively, as if I were a nuisance. I care a lot about being polite and friendly and it hurts to be treated that way. 3. Beer- had the black lager, usually one of my favorite kinds of beer. Why oh why would you add a hoppy finish to a black lager?? Terrible choice. 4. Food- burger came without fries, would have been nice to at least be asked if we'd like fries with it since basically everywhere else gives you fries with your burger. Mac and cheese was SO disappointing. As a lover of Mac and cheese, it is unforgivable to toss a bunch of grated cheese and butter on hot noodles and call it Mac and cheese. That's not cheese sauce, that's melted cheese on butter pasta. So greasy and unpleasant. Charged me $5 to throw a handful of roasted veggies on top. 5. It's loud inside and tables/seats are uncomfortable. Goodbye, old friend! read more

Great quality food in a clean and spacious location. It's a good substitute if you do not want to head to the Dekum location. Parking in the area can be a bit tricky as it's in Slabtown area. The service over here is pretty friendly and attentive. I ordered the Reuben sandwich, which came with curly fries or potato salad (go with the curly fries, they are delicious). The size of the sandwich is decent. The bread is toasted perfectly and the quality of the meat speaks for itself. Oh yeah, great place for beer - for the beer drinkers. read more

Kicking myself right now for being too eager to eat and drink and forgetting to take pictures! We came here on a Monday evening and we were able to get a table right away. Pleased to see how sanitary they were, cleaning tables as people left. However, I do wish that they had blocked off some of the booths. The selection of beer was quite impressive and I really enjoyed the beer I got but really the star was the food! We ordered the giant pretzel and wow... it was GIANT! This thing was brought over to us in a roasting pan and didn't even properly fit on it! The pretzel was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Cheese was great but there wasn't enough! We ended up having to take some of the pretzel home... it was so large we couldn't finish it. We also got the carnivore Mac n cheese and that was phenomenal. The bacon was extremely crispy which paired with the saucy pasta delightfully. It's not often that you go to a brewery and rave about the food but I highly recommend coming here hungry! read more

We stumbled upon this place and the outdoor murals beckoned me from down the street. So happy we stopped in! We were seated upstairs, and while I had to politely ask to be seated overlooking the downstairs, they were open to that, thanks! I loved being able to enjoy the upstairs murals and the action downstairs and outside, on a beautiful day in Portland. The burger is great, guys! Solid! They've got a couple flights, and since it was my first time here I ordered the Classic (which is more of their IPAs). Breakside IPA- your namesake better be good! (and it was) Wanderlust IPA- nicely tropical Pilsner- Really good, people! Rainbows & Unicorns- nice session IPA Stay West- good West Coast IPA style Salted Caramel Stout- nice Milk Stout I loved the atmosphere here, and the mural of painted stumps going up to the second floor, which a nice server gave me a little local history lesson about, since I was visiting from out of town. Our party needed a mid-afternoon snack, so we got the waffle fries ($5), and the hummus plate ($12) and made the latter vegan by omitting the cheese and tzatziki; they added more pita to compensate, which was nice. The fries went well with their homemade habanero dipping sauce. The hummus plate came with a nice amount of cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and mixed olives; the hummus itself was nicely done, though was swimming in a bit too much olive oil. We always love the nachos and beer but today they had a complete New Year's kit in a box that was very reasonably priced. It had hats, noise makers, beads, sparkling wine that was delicious, orange juice and even little champagne glasses. It was well thought out and we really appreciated the thoughtfulness of it. Their winter beers are particularly delicious I noticed some new items on the menu and the marinara chicken sandwich I tried was very tasty. 10/10 would go again and would buy their New Year's kit in a box again. read more

I was inspired to review this brewery because I've just gone out of my way to get their Brewery Salad with added Ahi tuna for lunch two days in a row! And Yelp reminded me that I had a similar experience with 10 Barrel years back (house salad with steak). Yes, the beer is great (especially the fresh hop variants they are featuring right now), and I would come just for that. But, a world class salad takes it to the next level. If you go here and only try one (1) thing, get a beer. If you go here and want to get two (2) things; Get the Pretzel! The large- big pretzel is tasty and fun! It is as big as 3 people's heads, and that tends to be the size group I share it with! The pretzel is prepped really well and is hot & fresh, and very soft. And, it comes with a white-cheddar dipping sauce and a hot-wasabi like-mustard dipping sauce. They are both really good. Again, it is fun to order and share with people. I also like how they have their beers on tap split up by beers actually brewed in that building & location separated from beers on tap, but brewed at the Dekum or International Way sites. Breakside Brewery has a really nice patio on the west-side of the building, so that makes this place even better. Good Beer, Good Food, Good Service and my dog can hang out with me (if he is well behaved, on a leash, etc.). That is really all I'm asking for, this place is as good as it gets! read more
