This was my second attempt at a first meal and we were supremely happy we made the effort. The staff are friendly and my kind of spunky. As one should on their first visit, she-who-must-be-obeyed and I ordered cod fish and chips. My partner ordered coleslaw whilst I requested clam chowder. The coleslaw had a bit too much mayonnaise for this reviewers taste buds but was still a tasty dressing recipe and far better than that served at Bennett's Fish Shack. The clam chowder was very tasty and far ahead of the chowder served at Bennett's. Finally, the fish and chips were wonderful. The fish was fresh, breading light and fried to near perfection. The chips are dredged in flour before frying and yield a great chip. We enjoyed our noon meal on the deck under blue and sunny skies. Yes, the road noise on nearby bridge was at times annoying but not so much to put us off our meal or the ambiance of an unpretentious eatery. When next we desire fish and chips we will take the 30-minute drive from our new Ocean Shores' home and recommend you do same irrespective of your starting point. read more

The service was okay until we asked for some lemon, then we got lemon tossed on our table with now we are bothering them attitude. The loaded clam chowder was NOT worth 28$ that we got charged for. They also have no price on it because they make it up comparing it to market value for shrimp. It was frozen salad bag shrimp on top and did I mention the chowder was less than warm; It was less than warm chowder with COLD tiny shrimp on top! I told my husband not to eat it but he said he wasn't wasting money. Place was a market with the little dining area off to the side. It's decorated like every other fish joint. Our friends who live in Ocean Shores part-time recommended Breakwater for fish and chips. Wow! Delicious! We ordered the combination platter which was more than enough for both of us. We also ordered a large cup of clam chowder. We enjoyed our battered cod, halibut, prawns, and calamari. The combo came with chips (fries) and we added coleslaw and unsweetened tea. The seafood was crispy outside and tender inside. With the tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, slice of lemon, and malt vinegar, our dinner was complete. The fries were perfect! The clam chowder was delicious! We loved that the seafood and fries weren't greasy. Which means that the oil was hot and the food was cooked correctly. At some places, their fish and chips are soaked in oil. Not cooked correctly. Everything tasted fresh. Nice views too. Not a fancy place, which is completely fine. The clam chowder is REALLY GOOD; with lots of clams! I had the broiled salmon special for $16 and the outside was lightly seared to make it a little crunchy and was MUY DELICIOSO! The restaurant is right on the waterfront and I ate outside on the patio, with a view of an old, truss railroad bridge and an old, hollowed out building, probably their original, with " Breakwater Seafoods - Wholesale - Retail painted on the side. Breakwater Seafoods & Chowder House is a fish market that also has a fast casual restaurant attached to it. Even though we came within an hour of closing, there were multiple people buying fish and several in the dining area chowing down on some delicious looking fish & chips. The restaurant is right on the water, although it was dark so we couldn't really enjoy the view. 2 Piece Cod & Chips ($14) - This includes two fried pieces of mildly flavored, tender and flaky cod. The breading has a good thickness and is fried well, resulting in a fantastic crisp and yet is not oily or greasy at all. The fries are normal commercial lightly-breaded fries, but fried well to a crisp, yet remaining tender inside. The dish comes with a 2 oz portion of tartar sauce that's fresh, tangy, and creamy; a perfect accompaniment. (4/5) Sourdough Bread Bowl w/ Chowder ($15) - The chowder is delicious. It's thick, creamy, perfectly seasoned, with a generous amount of tender cubed potato, chopped clams, and even some bacon, giving a burst of salty umami. The bread bowl is actually toasted with butter, on both the top piece that's carved out and the rim of the bowl, adding additional texture and richness. I haven't seen this in any other bread bowl before, so it's a very nice touch. The bread bowl is very small (one of the smallest I've seen) and, unfortunately, seems to be a commercial one, so it's a bit bready and dense, and has that fast fermentation/preservative taste characteristic of a commercial bread. They call it sourdough, but there's no hint of any rich sourdough flavor whatsoever. I still think the dish overall is very good, but it could be improved by using a bakery-fresh bread bowl. Although, I'm not sure if there are actually any bakeries in the vicinity, which might explain why they choose to use the commercial bread. Since the bowl is small, the amount of soup also isn't that generous. It's probably only 8oz, so you're essentially paying $10 extra for the bread bowl since an 8oz cup is normally $4.99. Another minor issue I had is with the paper covered tray they serve the dish on. Since this is a soup, it overflows from the bowl as it's eaten and soaks into the tray, making the table kind of soggy afterwards. Now I know I have a lot of critiques here, but I do think this dish overall is good and I would get it again, maybe with an additional portion of soup to go along with it. This has become our favorite stop along the coast! The chowder here is outstanding , rich, creamy, and silky with a tangy note that sounds unusual but works perfectly. It's packed with clams, bacon, potatoes, and so much flavor. The fish and chips are another highlight. While I personally prefer a wet batter, their version is still excellent: the fish has a light, crunchy coating (not hard at all), and the "chips" are thick, battered, and perfectly crispy. The Dungeness crab sandwich is also a must-try! Generous crab, just the right amount of cheese, and bread toasted to perfection. The setting is lovely, with a relaxed, self-seating atmosphere overlooking the river. The only thing that consistently stands out to me is the initial greeting experience. When you walk in, you order at the counter, but I've found that there's very little acknowledgment as you enter. Each visit I've had to be the one to start the conversation, which can feel a bit awkward and off-putting. Once you order, the service is as expected: food is brought to your table and they'll check in once, but then you're on your own. Despite that, the food and views keep us coming back, it's a gem on the coast that's worth the stop! read more

I had the special which was Coconut Shrimp with a sweet thai chili sauce. It came with fries and I made it a combo with clam chowder and a drink. The chowder was FANTASTIC. I was very impressed. I wouldn't typically order clam chowder but could have had that as a meal and been very happy. The coconut shrimp were HUGE and cooked perfectly. Fries were crispy and very good. The sauce was great. I tried the cod from my groups order and it was very good. Also tried the crab grilled cheese and it was good too. The service was great and we got our food quickly. Seating is casual, condiments are plentiful and they have a nice view of the river from the windows and umbrella-covered tables on their deck outside. - Fish and chips: the fries were finger-licking awesome! Crispy on the outside, pillowy potato on the inside. The fish was pretty good and breaded with panko. - Clam chowder: wonderful! To be fair the clam chowder was delicious but the crackers were so stale they were inedible. The halibut and chips were horrible. Chewy and rubbery they didn't taste or feel like halibut at all. I expected way more for $30 and order. Being from Alaska I know halibut l, and if this was halibut at all it was unrecognizable. Don't waste your money. read more

It's been about a year since our last visit. Wish we lived closer it's such a treat to stop here the consistency is what makes us come back. The service was just as friendly as our first visit. The husband got the double grilled crab sandwich it was just as great as the last visit, my mother in law got the Crab Louie never have you wanted a salad more. What a fantastic lunch spot! It's hidden in plain sight along one of the main arterials in Aberdeen and it's worth seeking out. Wife had the Cod Fishwich that she said is hands down the best fish sandwich she's ever had. High praise indeed. I had the grilled crab and cheese which was also top notch. Crab was uber fresh as should be expected. Clam chowder was just average but I've had some truly great chowder this trip. Location is excellent, right on the Wishkah River as it meets the Chehalis River. The patio would be nice but today was a bit chilly. Just a heads up when parking, the curb height is pretty high! Be careful not to bang your doors trying to get in or out. With that being said, this place is well worth the stop. When we came there was plenty of parking. Counter staff greeted us promptly and were very kind. We each ordered a small claw chowder, great flavor and good sized pieces of clam. We also shared a Breakwater Combo platter. The fries were crispy and there were a lot of them. The fish was well breaded and crisp. This place has tons of seating options, indoor and out. Right off the bat the service wasn't to good. The server or cashier wasn't at all pleasant. It appeared we were putting her out by taking our order. When we got the food the chowder seemed not fresh or from a can. The oyster shooters were not right. The fries had shrimp tails mixed in,which was an unpleasant surprise. For 65 bucks this was an extreme let down. The eating area was quite small and run down for the price. The only one positive was the view of the river, but heck I live down the way at the ocean so to me it's just a river. Very unimpressed and quite disappointed .
