    The basketball court
    Damian F.

Really nice for what I need...as you walk in...the staff greets you with a friendly, "Welcome to the Y"...that's an A+ in my book...the workout area isn't quite the biggest...but the equipment is all up-to-date and always kept really clean...they have personal trainers that are there to assist you with questions you may have...and to guide you with different workout programs you may want to try...the pool area is also pretty nice...it's separated into different sections...and at times they provide different classes and activities for each section...but my favorite area is the basketball court...if you go around noon time on Tuesday and Thursday...you're sure to get 3-4 games under your belt before you leave...and it's all about exercise and fun...never any drama...finally the cost is easy on the pockets...and I pay far less here than most of the big name gyms in the Houston area...

When I first met with one of the managers, Tyler, he assured me that he genuinely wanted to help me lose weight and improve my health. He sold me a personal training package and promised to provide two complimentary training sessions each month. His sincerity earned my trust, and I believed he was invested in helping me succeed. Unfortunately, it didn't take long to realize those promises were empty. On multiple occasions, I arrived for scheduled training sessions only to find that Tyler wasn't there, or he could train me or he would waste my training time. He never made arrangements for another trainer to cover the session or even communicated that he would be absent. The level of professionalism was completely unacceptable. When I questioned him about the complimentary sessions he had promised, he denied ever making the offer and claimed he had never used that promise to persuade me to purchase training that I would not have purchased if he had been honest about the number of sessions I would receive. I felt misled and taken advantage of. I escalated my concerns to the management team and eventually spoke with the Regional Manager, Ed, hoping someone would take my concerns seriously. Instead, I was met with rudeness, dismissiveness, and a complete lack of accountability. There was no apology, no willingness or effort to make things right. I was simply told by Ed that I should have read the contract and that if I wanted out of my training contract, I would have to pay to buy out the remaining sessions. After making multiple trips to the club over more than 3 weeks to try to resolve the situation, I finally canceled my membership. To add insult to injury, I was required to pay an additional $420 just to end my relationship with a company that had failed to deliver the service it promised. What disappointed me most wasn't just Tyler's conduct or Ed's unprofessionalism--it was LA Fitness's decision to stand behind poor customer service rather than support a loyal customer.

There is always sand in the indoor pool. Also, there are constantly women who get in the jacuzzi with only a towel on and it is so unsanitary. No one enforces the swim suit covering required.

There was a time I truly looked forward to coming here, but lately, that feeling has shifted. Earlier this year (around February or March), there was an incident where a man entered the women's locker room - far enough in that it was clearly not an accident. I reported it immediately to staff, but I never received any follow-up, which felt unsettling, especially given how tucked away the women's locker room is from the men's. Additionally, the equipment at this location feels outdated compared to other clubs. There are frequent maintenance issues, and the overall layout doesn't seem optimized for peak times. If you're hoping to train legs for example between 4-7 PM Monday through Wednesday, be prepared to wait - often long - for machines or platforms etc. Interuptions during your sets are the norm. Even gyms with a significantly lower price point, like EOS and planet fitness, have more versatile equipment (e.g., a dual abductor/adductor machine), which could be a worthwhile upgrade here. Crowding has also become a major issue. Over the past couple of months, the gym has felt consistently packed regardless of the time of day. If there's a new sign-up promotion running, it may be worth re-evaluating how it's impacting existing members. It's incredibly difficult to follow a structured workout when you have to constantly rearrange your routine just to get access to equipment (if you're lucky). Parking has also become a huge deterrent and adds another layer of stress to each visit. The class schedule is not great either, as a yogi, i rarely have the opportunity to attend a class, and wish they had AM sessions available. Pickleball courts are fresh and new, but are first come first serve, and since they have been installed, have not had a chance to use them, due to strenuous wait times. Not to mention the amount of people who walk around with tripods at peak times recording, hence why i pay the fees to not be around people recording.. While I appreciate the under-26 discount, which brings the monthly cost down to around $220, I'm beginning to question whether the value is still there. I would really encourage management to consider updating equipment and rethinking capacity management - especially at peak hours. It's difficult to understand how this location is being ran when other nearby locations offer a much better experience for a similar price point. The one thing they do right is customer experience. I always enjoy getting to speak with the front desk staff and trainers. I really hope this feedback is taken into consideration for improvements, and helps out anyone who is considering spending $3000 a year to work out here.

But it does seem a bit elitist, and also I think the fact that it opens at 5:30 can be a bit of a problem, because if you work here at Memorial City and you start at 8, that might be okay as long as you only want a quick workout, but if you work somewhere else in Houston and you start even as late as 9 then good luck getting done with a 2-hour workout and getting to work in time.

I highly recommend this gym if you're looking for quality over quantity. The owner teaches most of the classes and he has proven to be a real fitness instructor. You'll always have detailed instructions on the workout moves, modifications, and a continuous screening of your form during workouts. This ensures your time isn't wasted and you don't hurt yourself. There are classes as early as 5:30am and as late as 7:00pm. I recommend being all in if you join here. The workouts are comprehensive in that you get a mix of strength and HIIT/more cardio as long as you attend at least three times per week. The owner - Walter - makes no bones about this and he seems personally invested in each of his members. In my first consult I was provided a Zoom meeting to discuss goals, then a 1:1 workout so that he could gauge my fitness level. Last year I couldn't commit to three days per week, so he was nice enough to not take my money and recommended that I find a better fit. I'm happy to see Be Strong still operating post-COVID. The safety measures in place are strict, so be willing to following instructions.
