I am normally not a sandwich person, but I was coerced to try Brett's for lunch. What a surprise! The chicken salad sandwich? So yummy. Egg Salad? The best! I work close to here and it's my favorite lunch spot. I love the grilled chicken on rye! Everything they offer is delicious. Some of the negative reviews complain about the wait time but I don't remember ever having to wait more than 5-10 minutes... the food is made to order, it's not McDonald's by any means so it's not going to be ready in ten seconds (which is a good thing). It's also not expensive at all! The sandwiches are all in the $4-6 range which is WAY cheaper than surrounding places. This is River North, nothing is dirt cheap here. I work just down the road from this place, and never stopped in. I usually go to Galleria for lunch, and thought I'd give this place a try. I ordered the tuna salad sandwich and their Soup of the Day, Chicken Tortilla. The food was ready within 2 minutes, but the chef decided to make an omelet, warm up some biscuits before placing my sandwich and soup into a bag for me. There wasn't a line, it wasn't during the lunch hour, so there was no reason for the 10 minute delay. I brought the food back to work and dove into the soup. The small soup costs about $4.50, which is pretty pricey in my eyes, and the size was pretty standard, about fist high and palm wide. The soup wasn't bad, although the chicken was flavorless and incredibly dry tasting. The tortillas were pre-added to the batch, so they were already soggy, not the texture I expected. As for the sandwich...it was terrible. The piece of lettuce was all dried up and and on the verge of spoiled. The tuna salad was some of the driest I've had, and completely lacked flavor. To through more insult to injury, the tuna didn't even cover the surface of the bread, almost 1/3 of the bread top to bottom was missing tuna salad...and they gave me two (2) quarter sized tomatoes', 1/4" thick, stacked on top of each other right in the middle. It's not difficult, especially for a deli, to make decent tuna salad, spread it across the entire bread, have some fresh lettuce, and two normal sized 2" tomato slices spread across the area of the sandwich. This wasn't just bad, it was lazy...and it all cost me $12.50. What a ripoff! I don't know how the rest of their food is, but unfortunately this bad experience will prevent me from finding out. read more

Another good River North Runch spot! There are some days when you are in the mood for bland repeatable franchise food, and there are days when you want something more, without having pay an arm and a leg. Good selection of sandwiches, grilled stuff, daily soups, and things like coleslaw or potato salad. I usually try going a little bit earlier than lunch, or a bit after. Nothing against standing in lines, but I'd rather be elsewhere. Just like any decent location, nicer weather makes for longer lines. read more

Brett's was okay. I got a grilled cheese sandwich with avocado and a side of cole slaw. Pros? The grilled cheese was amazing. Cheezy (cheddar), the avocado was perfectly ripe and the bread was soft and fresh. Cons? It shouldn't take 25 minutes to make a grilled cheese sandwich when there's only 3 other customers in the shop. Seriously. Oh, and their cole slaw has way too much mayo. It was a giant, gelatinous blob of slaw. I really prefer oil/vinegar slaw to this mess. BLECH. It's also kinda expensive. $9.00 for a grilled cheese+avocado and a side of slaw? Really? YUCK!!!!! I've given this place many chances only because its the closest place for lunch. Every time I try something different hoping it would get better, but to no dice! Tried the tuna - tasteless, turkey sandwich- nothing special at all. The final draw was when i ordered a simple Bacon Egg and Cheese on toast for breakfast. Not only were they slow with hardly any customers, but when i got to work and opened my sandwich would you believe they had the NERVE to give me BURNT TOAST!!!! Came in here on a whim for breakfast this morning and I'm sure glad I did. I went with the breakfast special and subbed in hash browns for eggs. I was really impressed that the cashier was willing to do this because many places are not willing (I do not eat eggs, so I encounter this a lot). The special came with two pancakes, bacon and hash browns. I got a heaping plate of food for $7.75 and was really impressed with the portions for the price. Pancakes - perfectly cooked, very fluffy and just all around great Bacon - could have been a little crispier but was pretty good Hash browns - These were a real home run. They were really seasoned, perfectly cooked and totally shocking for what I thought I'd find in this little corner joint. The hash browns alone are worth another trip All in all Brett's Kitchen really impressed me. They know what they do and do it very well at an affordable price. I need to come back at an earlier time. Actually, I need to come by earlier and just while the crowd dies down. I came here late on a Saturday afternoon and was disappointed at first when they ran out of certain menu items. Boo! The guy preparing the food was really nice though and offered to make me and my guy companion what he could. I ended up with scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon and a side of toast, while my friend got the bacon cheeseburger. As you can tell, we were on the hunt for some bacon. We were both satisfied with our orders and left stuffed. At the last minute we decided to try some of the bread and ordered to go a slice each of the apple and banana/blueberry breads. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what the apple bread tasted like because we did got two slices of the banana bread instead, which we did not find out until much later. What I can say though is that banana bread was really sweet and moist. It went well with the mocha and latte we ordered at the Nordstrom's espresso bar. Brett's has very good food at fairly high prices (hey, it's the neighborhood). Their sandwich fixins' are always fresh, and their breads taste baked-that-day homemade. There is plenty to choose from on their menu and they have pretty much anything you could want on a sandwich. Lots of options for the veggie and the carnivore, some mediterranean selections too! They also have hot dishes and tons of sides. Brett's has a very diner-like feel to it, but they manage to keep it clean and welcoming. The employees are always cheery and efficient. The best part for me is that their roast beef is a perfect medium rare - I don't care for flavorless gray meat so when I want roast beef, Brett's is where I go. read more

This is right by my work and I am obsessed with their black bean burger and sweet potato fries. The burger doesn't fall apart and has a delicious spicy mayo and the fries are nice and crispy. Their other options are pretty decent as well but nothing comes as close to the burger. I go there at least once a week. The seating area is pretty small but I always get it to go. This place has been a lunch stop for me for a couple of years now. Working close by it was a convenient place to go for lunch. Beyond the great location (right next to the brown line stop on superior) the food is great! Handmade sandwiches, dishes and soups! This family run lunch spot is really a great spot lunch! I work across the street so I eat here pretty often! I've tried most of their sandwiches and they've all been good. The "pre-made" turkey and chicken sandwiches in the case are also good and they're fresh. I like the fact that the veggies they put on their sandwiches always seem really fresh. I stopped in for the first time today thanks to my new office location, and so far so good! I only had the tabouleh, but I willingly accepted a bite from a co-workers reuben and it was pretty damn good. Everything seemed fresh and the bread was sufficiently buttery crisp. The tuna melt, turkey burger and sweet potato fries looked solid too. I feel a little guilty that I'm more excited about the new food options than my pristine window seat at the office, but I can't help my foodie behavior. I forgot how much I loved this place. I used to work down in the area and can vividly remember my first experience at Brett's. I walked in at the peak of lunch hour to a frenzy of wire-framed toting skinny architects trying to shout out orders to the overwhelmed cooks. It was chaos- and I loved every minute of it. This weekend I found myself in the area and had to stop in for some coffee and chaos. Like the rest of the city I was once in love with- Brett's Kitchen has changed!!!!!! You have to order in a non-chaotic fashion at the register. I was devastated. I got over this fast as soon as I had my ALT (avocado lettuce and tomato. I work right off the Chicago Brown line and I always see Brett's Kitchen. I finally tried it last week and was pleasantly surprised! The only reason for a 4-star rating is because of the phone etiquette when I called to order. The woman answered by saying, "Yeah?" When I said I wanted to place an order for pickup, she responded with, "Yeah what do'ya want?" I felt this was a little rude, especially because I called around 2:00, not during busy lunch hour. I ordered the Pyrenees Cheese Sandwich with avocado and tabouli. I'll try anything with avocado! I wasn't sure what tabouli was, but it seemed sort of like quinoa. I spent about $7 on the sandwich and sweet potato fries. Both were excellent (although the fries were a bit soggy. Still good, though!) While I got my lunch to go, the inside of the restaurant was very clean and quaint, set up like a diner. Fast, fresh, and reliable! Anything I have tried from Brett's has never disappointed me from the donuts to the sandwiches. I heard they make a killer omelette as well but I have yet to have the time to try them! Trust me, SKIP SUBWAY and walk a few more steps down. I work a few blocks away Brett's, and its my favorite. The staff is so genuine and friendly. I have such a crush on the girl that cashiers! After visiting only a few times, it felt like she recognized me and we were buds. Love that! The whole team acts like family. Its such good energy, laughing, joking, smiling always. The place is really clean, and has this cute rustic charm with colored bowls around the walls, that is hard to find in the city. The food is fantastic. I am never disappointed. You dont even have to look at the menu, whatever you want, they can make it, and it will have fresh ingredients and you feel totally catered to. This place is almost always slammed when I go in and for good reason. Even though this place is just down the road I don't go often for lunch. The few times I have been there the sandwiches have been good. Brett's is a staple at my office. Their iced coffee is super delicious (they can also add almond milk instead of cream if you ask) and their pastries are amazing and come in huge portions. I recommend the almond croissant or zucchini bread, which you could share with a friend the slices are so thick. For lunch, their soup of the day has never disappointed. I go here like twice a week at least! Everyone is super friendly. There isn't too much seating, but I usually go around 1-2pm and I can get a spot to sit. There's outdoor seating when it's nice out. To preface this review, I am only writing this based on the service and coffee of which I am a regular customer of, not the food. I started to order my morning Ritual coffee through Brett's more frequently as of late since it's conveniently on my way off the Chicago brown line and steps away from my office (vs. going to Dunkin Donuts). Their regular iced coffee is worlds better than Dunkin's quality and is about the same price for what a medium iced DD coffee costs (a few cents difference). I like that this is what appears to be latino-owned business in a predominantly upscale Caucasian area. I almost always order through the Ritual app to order my coffee when I'm a stop away and they always consistently have my coffee ready for me to pick up and jet out and feel like I am always greeted with a nice good morning from the owner. The only constructive feedback that I would have is sometimes when the younger employee runs cash, I dont even get acknowledge or a hello/thank you when my order gets handed to me. Small thing, but becomes a big thing to notice over time as it can seem off-putting and semi-rude to some folks around here. Overall, a fan of the coffee and service. Huge fan of Brett's. I'm a lunch regular (along with most of my office) and usually get it to-go. It's quick, well priced, and the employees are always friendly. The lunch rush is pretty crowded, but you'll still get in and out of there quickly. All of their soups are excellent, but the tortilla soup is for sure a fan favorite. I love the spicy black bean burger too (and definitely always get the sweet potato fries with it). And while it might be kind of childish, you really can't go wrong with their grilled cheese on sourdough. read more

The staff is genuinely friendly -- after visiting only a few times, I felt that I was recognized, and the cashier jokes around with me often while she is taking my order. If the staff isn't a family, they sure act like it. Everyone in there is happy and working together to run an efficient operation. the place is really clean, too. The food is fantastic. I probably eat here once or twice a week, and I am never disappointed. I'm never wary to try something off the menu that i haven't ordered before, but my favorite menu item is the Gazpacho, which they serve all summer -- the BLT and hamburger are also mighty tasty, but the menu has plenty of healthy and/or vegetarian options too. Service needs work. Ordered a reuben at 12:30 today, didn't get it until 5 after 1. Order came up and sat by the register in front. I stood at the counter, patiently waiting for my food. No one ever checked in with me. Eventually, after another reuben came up - someone that no doubt ordered well after i did - i spoke up, and instead of an apology or "how can we make this right" i got "why didn't you say something"? This is a neighborhood deli -- no more, no less. I really don't understand why so many people seem to love it on this site. I work nearby and go there for convenience. It's fine. I'm glad it's there.
