I'm a good shopper and I do love fashion, but I know my financial limitations. But I'm also a great bargain-hunter. So when I happened across this shop in downtown Mill Valley and saw the sales signs in the window (and possibly the word "outlet"), I thought, "What's the harm in looking?" Big mistake. Let's just say I never got past the shoes--or boots, to be more specific. I was longingly eyeing these beautiful gray suede knee-high boots when the saleswoman approached and asked if she could help. Was there a specific type of boot I was looking for? I explained that I never have much luck with fitting boots because of my calves, and she said the magic words, "Robert Clergerie. Stretch leather." She held up the pair for me: the toe was between rounded and pointy (a good compromise), the color was a smoky black, the heel was solid--not as sexy as a stiletto, but looked infinitely more comfortable. And comfort was key, as I'd done considerable damage to my feet while walking all over Montreal the week before, and still had the blisters to prove it. I told her I was hesistant to try on shoes at all because my feet were probably still a bit swollen and the only footwear that was comfortable at the moment was the Reef flip-flops I was wearing. But she made a good point, Clergerie shoes are known for their comfort, and if the boots felt comfortable now that would prove it. She was right. Amazingly comfortable. And then she uttered more magic words: "Even though they're marked down already, I'll make it 70% off." Sold. I have to say the saleswomen here were super nice and made me feel welcomed, not out of place, even though I was very, very casually dressed (for me, especially). In fact, when I mentioned I'd gotten a bit lost looking for a local restaurant and ended up in downtown Mill Valley, she gave me the directions I needed. Note: This shop also carries Penhaligon fragrances. I didn't allow myself to look around the rest of the shop because I was afraid I'd want to buy more things. But I may have to go back for the Endymion cologne ...

Coming from a hospitality background, I always try to give the benefit of the doubt, but I was absolutely floored with her complete lack of professionalism and frankly odd behavior. I see from a number of other reviews, that my experience is unfortunately common with her. I had purchased shoes from their San Anselmo location just over a month ago -- receiving fantastic help by the way at that location. Fast forward 37 days and I noticed extreme wear to the outsoles of my shoes and they were separating in places. I found this very odd for such a short period of usage and I called the San Anselmo shop and they recommended I go to the Mill Valley location for help, which is where the alternate universe service started. Mecque looked at the shoes, aware that they had been used for just over a month, and replied this is not a fault with the shoe, it is a problem with how I walk...something to the effect of 'you do not pick your heel up enough and walk too flat'. Wait, what? Her first response was telling me that the shoe is fine and that I do not walk correctly! My intention was to first just show the shoes to ask if they were defective or if this was just an easily wearing shoe, not to demand a refund or anything like that. Instead, I was told my walking style was defective! But wait, there is more.... I had thought they would maybe exchange the pair for a new one, or perhaps help me find a shoe that might be a more durable one. When I started to inquire about this, Mecque abruptly stated that she was providing a full refund (again, I had not asked for this) and then she stated multiple times that I would be better served going to another store, because, get this, she told me she had limited time to help customers and that I was not the type of customer that she wanted to help. I was absolutely taken completely off-guard and stunned by her statement, but was able to keep my composure and ask if she meant that their store did not cater to walkers? She reiterated that I should find another store and listed off a few stores that I should go to instead. Really super bizarre behavior. With her declaring a refund as my only option, I even asked if the shoe company would reimburse them, and she confirmed they would, as the last thing I would want is to hurt a local business. Anyway, I would like to reiterate that I was super calm and friendly throughout and asked for nothing when I arrived, only asking their opinion on if it was normal for a shoe to wear out after just 37 days. I am writing this note as a word of caution and to reinforce the myriad similar interactions others have had with this manager. It was pretty deflating to have this experience with a business that I specifically sought out to locally support with a purchase that I really could use personalized, friendly help with. Anyway, hopefully she will at some point understand just how shocking and offensive her service is, and really aim to help all customers, not just the ones that meet her specific customer profile.

With a mix of consignment clothing and manufacturer samples, MOTC is a small, local shop with an enticing mix of offerings. Even though the consignment clothing would never count as cheap, every piece appears to be in great shape with no evidence of wear. The sample pieces, still sporting manufacturer tags, also sport a huge discount off their recommended sales price. I picked up a pre-worn, stylish fleece from The North Face for $30 and felt that price was reasonable and returned home to tell my son he should check the place out for the sort of outdoor men's pants he likes. The array of offerings is not dissimilar from what one finds at REI, but on a much smaller scale. There's other outdoor stuff here too - including a proprietor with whom one can engage in for everything fishing related. Despite its size, the store features clothes for all ages and genders as well as outdoor equipment. Whether you've outgrown something or just want something new or gently worn, if you're seeking outdoor clothing and like those name brands, MOTC should be on your radar.

They also have more fast casual spots for a quick meal to go, such as In 'N Out Burger, High Tech Burrito, and Parranga. They have an Orange Theory Fitness center, a Woodland's Pet Store, as well as a AAA location (for all my automotive/DMV needs). Over the years, they've done a really nice job of landscaping the property. There are plenty of palm trees and outdoor seating areas (which is especially convenient now during this Covid craziness). The shopping center is always clean. Seldom will you find litter or debris on the ground. In the past few year, more upscale shops have opened their doors to appease the local Soccer moms, including Spanish Table, West Elm, Lavande Nail Spa, and Athleta. You certainly won't find a Target, Panda Express or $1 Store in this mall. Welcome to Mill Valley, folks. Although Strawberry Village continues to expand its vendor portfolio and spruce itself up, my favorite thing about this mall is the smaller businesses who have been there for years. I'm talking about the old shoe/watch repair store, the copy shop, the camera store, and Arch Rival (which continues to sell sporting goods and shoes). Even in this Amazon home delivery world, these businesses continue to survive, and I'm happy to support them. * If you're a dog owner, I'll let you in on a little secret.
