There isn't a restaurant or clubhouse with snacks, so bring your own. But there is an awesome chipping green that is easy to get to and practice on! Prior to my golfing hiatus, I had taken quite a few lessons over the span of a year. My best friend was looking at getting into the sport, so I suggested that she take lessons to build a good foundation for her game. Unfortunately, it was difficult for me to find openings for the golf coach that I previously worked with due to his popularity. I had been using the driving range at Bay View to improve my game. It was there that I casually met Andrew Ka-Ne. I explained that I was looking for a golf coach and talked story with him to get a feel for his overall golf and coaching philosophies. We exchanged contact info and he texted me about his rates and availability. Andrew has the best hourly rates in Hawaii, and provides more instruction and support than other coaches charging double his rates. Simply put, Andrew is an excellent coach and his rates do not accurately reflect the value he provides. Andrew's golf philosophy is a nice blend of old and modern swing theory, supplemented by a strong integration of cutting edge golf technology (i.e. FlightScope Mevo+, swing cameras) and swing aides (i.e. wrist angle straps, alignment tools, ball striking tools, weight transfer board, etc.). Golf as a whole has significantly changed since the time I took lessons and, unlike other coaches, Andrew's view of the game is not stuck in the 1990s, 2000s, or 2010s. After sitting through a few of his lessons with my best friend and seeing her improve significantly, I was convinced that Andrew has a lot to offer. He is knowledgeable and encouraging and he has a very keen eye for spotting problematic swing mechanics. Andrew is very good at designing various drills to accomplish the same thing. He told me that every student learns differently, and it is about teaching in a way that clicks with the student's brain. Many other coaches are rigid in their approach and force their students into swing mechanics that mimic the touring pros (i.e. wrist angle must be exactly X degrees, rotation must be exactly X amount, spine angle must match [insert name] tour pro, etc.). This is not Andrew. He understands that people are built differently and assists his students with creating the most efficient swing within their own physical capabilities and utilizing their personal strengths. One of the things that I admire the most about Andrew is his commitment and dedication to golf. He will be around for decades to come, which is one of the main things I weighed when looking for a coach. Ideally, you want your coach to be available as you continue on your golf journey. This is especially helpful if you hit a plateau or see your scores flattening out. At that point, it is crucial to have a coach that can provide a series of "refresher" lessons to get you back on track. Overall, I think that Andrew has the most comprehensive approach to improving his students' games, and he genuinely cares about the achievement of his students. The only issue is that my golf game was greatly lacking. I had been given one off lessons over the years, but they only made my game worse. My dad then surprised me with some lessons with Ken and over four lessons he changed my game substantially. Starting off with my first lesson he asked why I was playing golf, and I explained that is was to have fun with my dad on Saturdays. He then said, so our goal is to make golf more fun and less aggravating. We worked on some fundamentals such as posture and grip. In fact fixing my grip that I had been told by so many other instructors was the best for me, but actually it hampered with my ability to hit the ball correctly. That little bit of change allowed me to actually hit the ball correctly instead of it just dribbling in front of me because my club didn't hit the ball in the middle of the face. The other important change he made is that he allowed me to make my own stance that fit my swing. Other people that had helped me had always commented on my foot placement after swinging, but Ken helped make it work and actually my game improved for it. I was amazed and instantly hooked on his teaching style! The next three lessons we worked chipping, driving, different flights (slice and hook), and improving the way I would be playing golf. The part that really amazed my father is that before I even started lessons, I could not hit my driver. Now I was hitting it consistently over 260 yards! Again a huge thanks to Ken and his coaching. Finally one of the best parts about Ken. He is humble, not pushy, and has real knowledge from golf pros. Everything that he taught me he backed up with facts to explain why it was needed or who had championed the technique. This really makes it easy to understand the teachings he is giving me and even sometimes a few jokes here an there! Now that I am playing to well my dad is now taking lessons with Ken to hopefully up his game and not let me get to far ahead and he has also seen major improvement! I also convinced my wife to take up golf, because of the great experience I was having with Ken and she is already seeing major improvement after only a few lessons. There is new management (Gerry) in the pro shop at Ke'alohi, whom worked between 7pm-10pm 2/14 and is absolutely horrendous. He has some sort of superior mentality on him and was so rude. We started the 9 holes around 8 Pm with a group of 6. At 8:40 pm while we were finishing up hole 4 all of the lights on the course turned off. We had to call multiple times to let him know we were still out on the course and finishing hole 4, he instantly acted annoyed that he had to turn the lights back on an hour before they closed. When we were in the middle of hole 6 at approximately 9:05pm, Gerry walked out to us and told us that our group of 6 with need to split into two groups because of "pace of play" . I would normally understand however there was absolutely no one else on the course and it would have taken us longer to finish waiting for half our group to finish each hole before the next half started because we had been hitting a few people at a time when we could. After he told us we needed to split up, he proceeded to say "you guys need to hurry the lights turn off in less than 20 minutes" which would be approx 9:20 pm. I proceeded to let him know online says 9:45pm and that never in the many times we have played have they turned off prior to that. His response was "okay 40 minutes then". While walking off he actively signed and let out a "whatever". We decided to skip a hole so we could have extra time to speak with him about the issues. We took our bags out to our vehicle at approx 9:35 pm after finishing hole 9. When we were getting ready to walk back in he already had the course and shop closed completely and was walking to his vehicle with his wife whom had been waiting on him. He was leaving before the course was supposed to even close. This was the absolutely worst visit, and we'd love the much older gentleman who use to run the pro shop back!
