Chose the 2-design package, gave notes about a couple of different looks and styles/colors I like, paid $1,200 and waited 3 weeks to get 2 almost identical "designs," with just a shade of color difference between them. I had been looking forward to getting some fresh, real, inspiring designs that I could use to upgrade my home's exterior, but I could've probably uploaded the same picture of my house that I sent them to an image AI site and probably gotten same or better ideas for free. Very disappointed. If I had to guess, they probably outsource the "design" to freelancers, ones who likely aren't even very experienced or qualified exterior designers. read more

I spent years following Brick and Batten's Instagram page and saving up for my digital exterior design before I finally took the dive and had them design my home. I knew this was a risk from the onset bc, well, first of all it cost like $1000 (steep for the average American), and they do not offer refunds and allow for only one design change after they provide the initial design. Now, I should say, I am a graphic designer my self and spent a lot of time playing with the exterior of my home before finally surrendering to the notion that they possessed a skill set that I did not. I just had to know if they could come up with something better than I could. I knew, from having looked at hundreds of their before and after designs, that there was a good chance that I might be disappointed in my design and a good chance I might have my socks blow off by their design. Some of their before and after home designs are amazing where the house is unrecognizable from what it was before, and others are fairly underwhelming. As an artist myself, it's clear to me that much of what determines weather or not a house goes from a 3 to a 10 is the bones of the house to begin with and the limitations set by the client. I gave them a painfully long explanation of my ideas, communicating that I live near a metro area so there is a lot of room for artistic freedom. I knew that, ultimately, I was rolling the dice with this purchase. Either they would come back with something amazing that I could never have thought of, or they would confirm my theory that, with the home that I have, I could just make a few basic changes to update the look of my home. Well, I was pretty disappointed when the design that they returned with was almost exactly what I had come up with on my own despite the fact that I had never showed them or told this this design idea. They did, however, come up with some solutions for the front steps (extending the length of each step to make the entry more grand). I was pretty upset at first but now I realize that the design that they came up with was the best version of my home. I must also add that they were excellent communicators and were kind enough to make some small edits and give advice when I decided not to keep the front porch a few months later. All in all, I would recommend this company if you are considering updating your home. But if you just want to make small updates like change the roof or the paint color I would suggest paying a graphic designer on Fiverr. Brick and batten is really a dice roll if you have the kind of house that they can do amazing things with then it's worth every penny. But if you have the kind of house that they can only make minor changes to then it's really not worth it. The problem is, you won't know until after you've already paid but then, if nothing else, you'll have the peace of mind of knowing what the best version of Your house is rather than wondering. A very disappointing experience. For what they charge, not worth it and better to go to another site for more interactive experience and cheaper cost. The results didn't match what was discussed or elevation drawings I already had for a renovation. Terribly difficult and time consuming to get anyone to respond, request corrections, or to remove things they add if you don't like it. I will be discarding the entire thing and starting with a new vendor who has an interactive communication method and far faster response time. Really wanted to love using them but def not for me. They did not listen to some of my non-negotiables in the first draft of the exterior redesign, and they did not do anything spectacular after the complementary redo. I basically paid $800 to have someone add wood accents on top of my windows, paint my house all white (even though I specified any neutral color will be ok), and add an awning on top of the garage. They do have any creativity. It looked like they assigned my project to an unpaid intern. Avoid them if possible. read more

Unfortunately I can not recommend brick&batten for exterior home design. We had high hopes but the design was simplistic and amounted to changing the windows, front door, and garage door even though we had mentioned we were interested in siding, new gutters, etc. When we requested an iteration on the design to add siding, we were informed that there was a 48 hour window to request such a change, and were denied. Apparently this is because they subcontract the design work and the sub only retains the file for 48 hrs. But none of this was disclosed upfront. Disappointing customer service, and definitely not worth the $800 fee. read more

They redesigned the front of a very plain rancher, incorporating a bit of an Asian feeling that flows with the existing bamboo growing. We asked for an expanded entry porch with a new portico, and they gave us a deck across the front of the house which I would never have thought of. My husband and I downsized and bought a little Cape Cod home. Good bones but much needed curb appeal. We wanted a portico but due to the shape of the house, we didn't know how to add one. I wanted something to dress up the windows but there was no room on either side of the 2 pictures windows for shutters. It was red brick that was not in good condition. We sent a photo into B&B to see what they would suggest to us. Not only was the photo they sent back absolutely stunning, when our general contractor had questions, we constantly referred him back to the photo. He had to make a few minor adjustments to allow for some gutter/spouting connections with the portico, but pretty darn close to the original - just by looking at the photo! It came out adorable, and is the gem of our block. Sooooo many compliments. We couldn't be more pleased with Brick & Batten. They gave us exactly what we asked for and more. I've completed large scale renovations on a number of properties but when planning to do our own home, my wife and I couldn't quite put out finger on exactly what we wanted. We paid for 2 different design options; one where we were very prescriptive and a second where we gave the B&B team carte blanche to do what they wanted.
