I absolutely love this place. I know how to fry chicken very well, and this has become my go-to place when I want a good fried bird. However, my last visit left me disappointed and very embarrassed. My boys were in town for our birthday weekend and I had been bragging on this place and brought them here at the end of our night at the bars. The chicken tasted burnt and they all made fun of it and me for bringing them here. It was as if the cooks took the chicken that was already cooked and threw it back in the fryer since it was the end of the night when we ordered. Brick and Bones has to be one of THE best restaurants in Deep Ellum. Like they're serving up some real homecooked comfort food. The ambiance is a bit divey, yet eclectic with really cool designs on the wall and doors on the ceiling! It's dimly lit and they are always pumpin' out some good tunes! Sounds like a club inside, but I don't mind. The service is exceptional. We were greeted immediately by 2 people eager to serve us. We did not have to wait too long for our food, but it was a Friday night so the wait was a bit longer than normal. The food is AMAZING! We all ordered something different and agreed! I always get the Chicken & Waffles. Large, freshly fried and coated chicken breast that is seasoned to perfection atop a hot and fluffy buttermilk waffle. The two are topped with some kind of sweet and spicy buttery marmalade and it just the extra kick this dish needs to push it over the top! Stumbled upon this place with a group of friends after the pool on Saturday. Although it's pretty dark inside, they have some pretty great food and servers. I ordered a bloody mary and they don't typically sell these so the bartender ran next door and got the tomato mix to make me and my friends one which I thought was really nice!! Our server Sierra was super adorable and nice and pointed out all her favorites/the most popular menu items. We got the tenders, habanero mac n cheese, potato salad and the waffle fries. This is one of the first restaurants suggested for me by my coworkers since moving to Dallas. I'm normally on the "healthier" side of eating but alas, their fried chicken and mac&cheese habanero are to die for!!! I can gouge myself on these all days (then cried later for having no self control when it comes to comfort food). The fried tenders have the right crispness to it, like crunchy but not overcooked like many other quick bars/fast food joints. The mac&cheese isn't spicy at all and is great to fill you up. Dive bars may be known for overly greasy, over salted, food, but the fried chicken here was quite delicious. What makes their bird so tasty is the brine, by soaking it over night in a salty bath, Brick & Bone is able to add a lot more moisture to their chicken. What that lends itself to is very succulent, very tasty, fall of the bone meat. I tried a number of different flavors, but personally found their classic 3 piece to be the best. She came to check on us a handful of times, but was most attentive when I asked for the check. That was the quickest I got something and she trying to complete. Beverages - bottle of beer from a local brewery in Dallas was $7. Never had to pay that much for bottle. They only had bottle too, nothing on draft. Our water tasted awful as she kept adding more water because they weren't keeping their pitcher cold and she never replaced the ice. I had no ice at the end and didn't even finish the glass (by this point I was ready to go anyways). Also, never got my lemons I asked for a couple of times. Food - we waited about 45mins which is ridiculous because the bar wasn't full and hardly anyone was eating. We order the "pollo patty melt". I was excited because it seemed easy and who doesn't love a good melt. Well, this one was awful. It tasted like burnt can chicken. The toast was probably the best. Fries were cold and sprinkled with some sort of flavoring they never mentioned and it wasn't good. The tomato chutney was ok. I never tasted the cheese. I tried a bit of it and ended up throwing half away. Tables were bent up/wobbly too. Overall, I was let down. I was really pumped based on others reviews that had recently came and thought me and my boyfriend would have a good time, but wasn't the case. Bars are popping up in Deep Ellum left and right. I accidentally walked into Brick & Bones. I was meeting someone - Bumble - for the first time. The bar I chose for the first date was closed, and I need to find another place quickly. I walked next door, opened the door was stunned, because Brick & Bones reminded me of a bar in Brooklyn - Brick and exposed beams (very meta). The bartenders yelled, "are you coming in or not," in a friendly way. I responded, "sure, why not." I made the right decision. The cocktails are named after characters from The Simpsons. All of the cocktails are interesting and tasty, but my favorite is The Seymour Skinner. It's a bourbon based drink mixed with pig syrup, mint and lemon. If you're hungry, order the chicken tenders. I was at a bar in Deep Ellum enjoying a drink and had a craving for some good late night food. I asked the bartender and he recommended me this place. I don't go out here often so I figured I'd give it a shot. It was pretty busy and packed when I came in. I sat down at their bar and ordered their fried chicken and habanero mac. It took awhile but it was understandable, given how busy it was. The food finally arrived and I was really impressed with how juicy and flavorful the chicken was. It wasn't dry and it was just the right amount of crisp. The habanero mac was also really good and balanced. I can't say that this is the best fried chicken place I've ever been to. There are many other places I can point to that I find more enjoyable. However, I will say I recommend giving this place a shot. It definitely exhibits the signs of becoming a deep ellum staple foodie spot complimenting one's night out at the bars. read more
