My first impression as I walked through the door was, "I like the feel of this place." After enjoying a cup of butternut squash soup accompanied by ciabatta slices baked in-house and following that with a cup of French-pressed coffee and a double-chocolate pecan cookie, my impression solidified. At 3pm, the restaurant was quiet--besides myself there was only a party of two present--as the staff busily prepared for the dinner menu in the back. They normally close at 4pm, but on Fridays they're open for dinner as well (the options looked scrumptious) until 9pm or so. The ambiance is what I would call "modern-rustic:" they stripped the walls down to brick and mortar, and the ceiling is original hammered tin (thus the name, you see); tables are highly varnished but retain a rough-hewn, sturdy look, and chairs are complemented by repurposed pews against the walls. There are just 15 tables or so inside the long, narrow restaurant, which I would imagine fill quickly during the lunch rush. However, the high, vaulted ceiling and wall of windows opening to the street keep the area from feeling cramped. The only down-side to my visit (and this is picky) was the coffee. But, not being a coffeeshop, I can hardly hold that against this great little place. I definitely look forward to returning here over lunch and perhaps a dinner at some point. read more

I was in search of a place to grab brunch with a friend and saw this lil place. Parking downtown is parking downtown, so that's whatever. The service here is pretty self explanatory. You order at the register and food is brought to your table. Fast and casual. I'm not too big on sandwiches or soups, but that's their main focus here. I had an order of the turkey rueben and a side of sweet potato soup. The sandwich was nice and toasty. Now the soup, that was amazing. Seriously, probably the best soup I've ever had, like, if I could, I would like to have a tube connecting to it injected into my body at a constant. Parking is an issue and it can get crowded at lunch but there's usually seating at the bar if there aren't tables available. Food quality is excellent. I tried the Brussels Sprouts for the first time and they were awesome served sauteed until slightly caramelized over a remoulade sauce. For an appetizer it's more than enough for 2. I work on 20th street N and have always seen this place packed around lunch so I figured to give it a try. A friend and I went in and sat at the bar and ordered. They have sandwiches, soups, salads. I ordered a lunchbox sandwich with a salad as my side. It was so disappointing. The sandwich looked like something I could make at home and had way too much cream cheese on it. I couldnt finish it all because it was too hard to stomach. The salad was ok, just a regular salad. I ordered a drink with it and paid $15. Way too pricey for a sandwich and salad. I enjoy coming here because I can either have a quick bite or it makes for a great place to meet someone for lunch/dinner. Check out the specials as they often have happy hour deals. I have never ordered something I didn't enjoy here. This particular trip I ordered the Brussel sprouts to share and as my meal the Tuscan Panini. I am a big Brussel sprout fan and I can attest these were delicious and may even make a Brussel sprouts hater change their mind. They were topped with pecorino cheese and were served crispy with capers on top of a delicious black pepper cream! The sandwich I ordered was just what I wanted that day. The Tuscan panini comes with portobello mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, and provolone served on a pesto Foccacia bread. All the flavors work so well together and make for a delectable veggie sandwich. I had to go with the mushroom soup - as it is one of my "go to's" here. The mushroom soup has a succulent and creamy texture and is topped with a dash or two of olive oil that seriously make a difference in making this soup stand out. I do have to add that the mac n cheese is also very tasty. If you are looking for a sweet treat after your meal I recommend the brown butter coconut cookie! read more

After a hike at Ruffner this past weekend, I felt like I had earned a lunch out somewhere (exercise is to eat more food right?). We both had wanted to try B&T and they have a downtown location which is convenient. We got there around noon and it wasn't very crowded, although it definitely had started filling up a good bit by the time we left. I really like the decor and design of the space. We opted to sit at the bar area, which is full service. Otherwise you order at the counter before sitting. They have a limited beer selection but they do a good job with the selection they offer. We didn't get a cocktail, but some of their drinks sounded very good and I plan on ordering one next time. Where to begin, I've wanted to dine here for years, but could never seem to make an effort until now. My husband surprised me with an anniversary lunch date and asked me to choose the place- well what do you know...the time was perfect. The soup....the soup...the soup, oh my goodness... one of the best soups in town. It's hard to put into words, but it surely warmed my soul! The butternut deliciousness was delivered to the table piping hot. At first glance, I thought the color was a tad light for butternut- I thought it looked more like egg yolk with a drizzle of oil so I didn't know what to expect. The first sip was amazing as was every sip to follow! I savored each sip even so that I began to tip the bowl as the soup began to disappear in my belly (now you know a soup is good when you tip the bowl to get every drop). It was rich, creamy and perfect for any fall day. I would buy this by the container! On to my husband: he ordered the brisket and a side of spring greens. The brisket was amazingly tender, loaded on soft pain de mie flatbread. Brick and Tin has simple food, done right! The décor is lovely- housed in a beautifully narrow building. The high ceilings have such great detail and the theme is clearly rustic. I like the pew seating along the wall and thought each table had ample space; then again, we were one of five diners at the time. The prices are fair, the salads look amazing and I've heard the dessert is worth a try. My only complaint is that the service is not the friendliest. First off, the inside of this restaurant is awesome. It is very simple, but the huge ceiling and brick just give it a really rustic feeling. It is really lovely. The man and I had lunch here the other day. I had the backhouse with a regular salad and he had the provence with field pea salad. My sandwich was alright. The turkey was nice, but I wasn't really feeling the tomato chutney. It was a little too sweet and made me feel like I was eating turkey and cranberry sauce. I could have used a little bit more goat cheese, and thankfully the lettuce was hardly there because it was shredded instead of leafs. The bread, although tasted good, was a little too soft. The boyfriend said he loved his bread, but the veggies were very plain. Two different kinds of squash and eggplant with no flavor makes for a pretty boring sandwich. I have been countless times to this restaurant and it really is as good as it gets. The sandwiches (I have basically tried all of them) are the BEST sandwiches I have ever eaten and are consistently that way. The Brisket sandwich is heavenly and the Bourbon County is out of this world. The staff is always super nice and accommodating and the cashier (the one taking your order) seems really knowledgeable about the items on the menu, which I always really appreciate. I think for the price (I pay around $14), it is a pretty good lunch place. I get a gourmet sandwich, a drink, a salad/soup, and always a brown butter coconut cookie (truly miraculous, I make everyone get one, they end up loving it). The atmosphere is fantastic, with beautiful vaulted coffered ceiling reminding you of how classy Birmingham used to be and hopefully will be again. Every once in a while I'll take a Friday off and go for a nice bike ride with my boyfriend downtown then stop for lunch along the way. This day we decided on Brick & Tin. We were a little later than the lunch crowd and didn't have to wait. I got Kimchi Pancetta Bacon sandwich with a side of cold couscous/Brussel sprout/seasonal veggie blend. The sandwich was very unique, and the kimchi paired surprisingly well with the savory bacon. I was so thoroughly impressed with the flavor combos. The side was also great, and I think it also would've been good served hot (cold Brussel sprouts are a little weird to me). My boyfriend got the New Orleans minus olives with a side salad. He loved his as well, and the side salad was complex, and it deserved a better name than just side salad! This place is a great alternative to your run of the mill soup/salad/sandwich place. The Brick & Tin in Mountain Brook is excellent! Food, service atomosphere, top notch!! The Brick & Tin downtown is inconsistent food wise and the attitude of the staff very poor. We used to go downtown often especially after the renovations and hours change. Really enjoyed it. Then we slowly noticed a change in the consistency of the food quality and very unfriendly staff whcih I think even may be the manager. We would see her on a regular basis and no smile or acknowledgment at all. Not that way at Trattoria. Then she served us a half piece of pie but selling it as a whole piece. Questioned it but she quickly walked away. Didn't want to make a scene so we just dont go there unless we have to. I used Yelp to find a place close to I20 on the way through Birmingham. This choice did NOT disappoint. It was about 5 minutes off the exit in the downtown area. Parking was not an issue (but DO have change for the meters as we so several meter readers during our visit). We went in about 11:15 and there were just a few tables filled (it's pretty small - maybe 15 tables) with counter service. Within 20 minutes it was packed with no tables left and a line to order. I had the chicken salad sandwich and the new summer special salad. Others had the cuban and a 2 salad combo. Our food came in 8-10 minutes. My bread was grilled on BOTH sides - nice. The chicken salad was good - little bits of pecan, celery and a tarragon note. Maybe not the best I've had but not too mayo-isn and very good. I ended up putting all of it on a half (double meat style) and ended up just eating the chicken salad on its own - it got even better as it went. I did this because SIDE SALAD. It was a mix of tiny black eyed peas and maybe lady peas, fresh corn, chopped zucchini, fresh tomato chunks, 2 large slices - one zucchini and one yellow - of squash, and a very light (almost non existent) balsamic dressing so the veggies stood out. It was just fabulous - fresh, summer-y, healthy tasting. I am going to try to recreate this one. Note: service is spotty. The girl who take the order was totally uninterested in explaining the menu, salads, etc. Not rude just not personable. The hub and I have recently moved back south after many years in Chicago, and while we're loving being back in the land of turnip greens and bar-b-q, we have missed the great variety of restaurants available back in the windy city - especially down town! Brick and Tin is a lovely, affordable spot with a cool, laid-back but still upscale vibe that had us feeling comfortable and at home from the first moment. The food was fresh and very tasty. I had the Parma panini with a classic salad and hub had the Florentine with a side of couscous. The panini and couscous were excellent - the salad was a good size but had way too much dressing tossed in for my tastes - so if you want anything less than "drowned," request dressing on the side. Service was friendly and the food was out fast - perfect for a quick bite before heading over to RMTC for a show. We took home an order of the chocolate bread pudding for dessert, and it wasn't the best I've had - but we didn't eat it til hours later, so I'll reserve final judgment til we can try it fresh. It was ***VERY*** chocolately....brownies drowned in fudge sauce chocolately. :D We will definitely be back! read more

Chicken, goat cheese, pesto panini. The salads and sandwiches were very basic. The food was good, but nothing to write home about, especially for the cost.
