Went there once shortly after they opened but won't go back. Food was average but attitude was snooty. Got a good coupon so I could go back but nope - once is enough sometimes. Relatives had same response to atmosphere when they went - atmosphere is off somehow. In their case a piece of plastic was in their partially still frozen burger. And both of them were sick when they got home. Hey if you're going to be snooty at least have stellar food to make up for it. And care enough about your customers to not make them sick. read more

I went halfsies with my sister. When I found out she was going to order the Guacamole Bacon Burger, and I'd planned to do the same. I asked her to consider half of another and went for the Taco Burger. Turns out the Taco Burger was my favorite of the two. It had more of a flavor profile. Being a fan of smashing chips between a cold cut sandwich, I liked the crunch of the tortilla chips on the burger and the jalapeño, black olives, along with the hot gooey cheddar cheese and a side of salsa and sour cream. The guacamole burger was mostly messy, not bad, and actually would have loved the guacamole on the taco burger! Most of us ordered side salads with our burgers which came out ahead of time. Nothing really special about the salads, but they were of decent size. Service was decent. We we were seated right away but instantly upon arriving I had icicles on my nose, since it was so frigid in the place. It's March people! And although an unseasonably warm day it felt like a meat cooler. They had all the ceiling fans on high! I got up and asked if they could turn down their ceiling fans off of blast and they thankfully obliged. I get it that this place is a burger joint, but I ordered the black and bleu salad and was very dissatisfied. Ice berg lettuce is a major red flag on any salad that you're going to sell for $11. Very cute little establishment. I fell in love with their gigantic pretzels, and this is the only reason I usually come here, and other people seem to enjoy their food and good beer prices too. I'll definitely be back. Pros: -Indoor and outdoor seating. Booths and tabled seating inside with tabled seating outside. The waitress was still pretty attentive when we were seated outside. As this place is located right next to a busy street, there is a noticeable traffic background noise, but it's not bad enough to make discussion difficult. -There is trivia playing on a couple TVs inside. You can use your cell phone (with an app) to play trivia if you want. No touching random bar tablets. -Local establishment. Gets points just for being a great place in Ames that's based in Ames. -I really, really love their Mega soft Pretzel. The portion size is GIGANTIC. The appetizer would easily provide a very-satisfying snack for four people, and it's probably a two-serving meal for any single person. -I called ahead one day and asked if they could have some Mega soft Pretzels warm and ready for pick up at a specific time. They said sure. I made it there to the location about 3 minutes late, and they hadn't even started making them. I had to wait while the pretzels were made for me. They were friendly, and I was glad they had been able to do a pick-up order, but it defeats the point of a pick-up order if I have to wait for them to do the entire meal once I make it there. -Booths or tables depending on what you prefer. Cons: -I love ordering their Mega Soft Pretzel. However, quality seems to vary a bit based upon when I've ordered the pretzel. On some days, it's perfectly oiled with a bit of salt. Other days, it's so oiled that there are pools of oil and the salt is taking over any other taste that the pretzel could have. It seems like a bit of quality control for different chefs would be awesome. -It seems pretty darn hard to get ahold of these Mega Soft Pretzels too. I've come in four times now to be told "we're entirely out". I've now taken to calling ahead to ask if they happen to have them available. It's usually a 50-50 shot as to whether they do. I'm not sure if they aren't ordering enough or if they have to pre-make the dough in the morning or what, but it seems really odd that they just don't have some of their menu items on a regular basis. -Employees don't always seem too "on the ball". Most seem to do their jobs okay, but there is a lot of time spent chatting up at the bar. Basic questions ("What Iowa beers do you serve?") are occasionally met with a blank stare and inability to answer the question. Attempting to use the Yelp check-in coupon was met with a lot of confusion and had to be discussed among multiple employees. However, while they may not be the most "above and beyond" employees, they've always been friendly and have always been willing to try and figure out a solution or an answer to things they don't know. It seems a bit like typical college students who genuinely want to do a good job at their job. -Parking may or may not be a pain in the butt. When I've come, I usually get somewhat-close street parking without too much of a fight. As I don't think this place as a dedicated lot, you'll need to find street parking. It doesn't appear to be paid parking, though, so it's less annoying to find a spot. Buns here are far better than those at Oddfellows and allow the burgers to stay in-tact while eating. A must-try! The restaurant is much smaller than I imagined, with only 15 tables and ~12-15 bar seats. It is a true sports bar with tv's everywhere. It appears as though there may be trivia as well, but only two televisions were showing the trivia and there was no mention about how to play. I ordered the 60/40 burger which, as you might imagine, tasted like bacon. It was smoky and delicious. The bun held up well to the burger and the bacon mayo topping was heavenly. My dining partner tried the ghost pepper burger which made him sweat, but he said he'd gladly eat it again. His bun was loaded with jalapeños and was apparently delicious. Thought about getting breakfast but at 11 my room mate and I decided on lunch and went into brick city. Being that they had just opened we were the only ones besides the staff inside which wasn't a bad thing. The service was quick and good but the food was a tremendous let down from what I had been told. Got the farmer brown burger and the egg on it was cooked to the consistency of rubber, while the burger was so raw I could hear it mooing. I normally get my burgers medium rare - this was raw and falling apart. It's also disappointing that it took 15-20 minutes to get our food even though nobody else had even ordered for the first 15 once people actually started coming in. read more

The beer selection is great, a full bar with several taps and a lot of different options, including some locals. The food was good. Veggies can substitute any burger for a black bean patty, though you will find your options are limited if you're anything like me and don't see the value in still paying 12 dollars to hold the bacon... Great nachos, perfect ratio of chips to toppings. And so much cheese! Burgers were good. We weren't asked how we wanted them prepared, but we also aren't picky about that so it wasn't a problem for us. Love that you can swap in chicken, the 60/40 patty, and pretzel buns on any of the burgers. If you can't find a burger you like then perhaps you are the problem. This is a good addition to some of the other eating offerings in the area with a more casual "game day" demeanor and food selections that may be more appropriate for sports viewing and malted beverage consumption among fellow men. There was a steady lunch crowd on the Friday I visited and the wait staff was not as responsive as I would have hoped, but they gained a lot of ground with some of their menu ideas that they have. I gave Brick City a 5/5 simply because the food is amazing. The Brick City Double is my go to burger. I've had other burgers here and they are all good but the BCD is the second best burger I've had in my lifetime. It's juicy, cheese overflowing off the bun pure bliss. I would recommend swapping the thousand island dressing for mayo(but that's personal preference) staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is great. I'm a big fan of good burgers and in my opinion, Brick City's burgers are the best non-fast food burgers you can get in Ames, probably most of Central Iowa. Brick City has a really great atmosphere - lots of TVs, plenty of bar seating and restaurant seating and a nice sports theme throughout. Cubs fans will appreciate the Cubs decor all over the place (the place was even named after the bricks at Wrigley Field). The staff have been curteous and friendly every time I've been there. Brick City's burgers are fantastic. My favorite is their Jalapeno Jack burger with tater tots. They easily serve the best tater tots in town. If you don't want a burger they also have several signature hot dogs on the menu, sandwiches and salads as well. We love Brick City and plan on going back many times. My family and love Brick City Grill. They make some of the best burgers in central Iowa and the prices are very reasonable. I consistently order the Jalapeno Jack burger. It is perfectly spicy, and is served with a spicy jalapeno-mayo sauce. I actually order a little extra of this sauce for my side of perfectly friend tator tots. My husband tends to order the pretzel burger--a classic bacon cheeseburger on a handmade pretzel bun. So, so good. Finally, my daughter likes the 60/40 burger. It is 60% beef and 40% bacon. She says it's like a bacon cheeseburger where the bacon doesn't slip off the burger. We have always had good service, but there is a wait during peak times. They don't have a comfortable waiting area, but they are good at getting people through quickly. read more

The waitress came back to the table after 30 minutes and said it would be a few minutes more. Does it matter that you give me an $8 burger or a $12 burger? And they didn't just change the price of one but both. So my free $8 entree saved me $3. We asked for one of the TV screens to be on the NFL game and were told that everyone in there wanted to watch Iowa State and they would not put the NFL game on. Went in with some friends for a relaxing Sunday night. Said they were running low on food after we ordered food. We ordered food that shouldn't be hard to prepare like burgers and the orchard chicken salad sandwich and chili and somehow it took them over hour to get our food to us. We also ordered some appetizers. The chicken dippers we ordered came with cheese sauce which was supposed to come with ranch or wing sauce. When our waitress asked what wing sauce we wanted and we said BBQ we didn't get it. My boyfriend who got chili as a side for his dinner was told once his dinner arrived that they ran out of chili when 2 other people at our table ordered chili too. The waitress behind the bar kept giving our table weird smirks because we just asking for things because our service sucked. So I also disliked Brewers as the previous post. I came here twice giving it the benefit of the doubt. However, it didn't cut it for me for the following reasons. Once we got in and sat ourselves, it took literally a good 15 minutes before anyone approached us. This is even though other people came in after us. I don't know if it was the fact I was with a black friend, but I found it very strange that we we're outright ignored. Finally our waitress who was apparently "busy" (most booths were not full, nor was the place packed) decided to come over and take our order. After waiting 10 more minutes for some water (the place is not big, so it would probably be easier to just have left us cups and we could have got our own water) we finally placed our orders. I ordered their steak sandwich, rare and my friend the salmon. We waited about 30 minutes for our food and it was beyond disappointing. My steak burger/sandwich was completely over cooked, so much that it was dry and a far cry from my "rare" request. And my friends salmon was completely raw inside! So we sent the salmon back, I didn't send the steak back and just ate it grudgingly. I'm glad I didn't send it back, because 20 minutes later the salmon came back out, and lo and behold, it was still raw inside. How do you mess up salmon? I guess ask Brick City grill. Not impressed, was hoping for more, but unfortunately it was not what I expected. Sad! read more
