It is important to preface my review with an interesting tidbit. I've suffered an aversion to toy…read morestores from as far back as I can recall. Trust, I have a memory like an elephant so it's a REALLY long time! I cannot offer any detail as to why this disdain exists, but I've never been a fan of going to the toy store. This holds true even as a small child. Although I wasn't a fan of toy stores, this didn't impede my ability to love and play with a variety of toys. #funfact: Barbies were my absolute FAVE! Moving on to my experience at Blue Ridge Toys... WOWZERS! This toy store is like no other! In stating like no other, I don't mean some grandiose venue such as FAO Schwarz. This store attracted my attention for a few reasons. First, the layout is completely different to that of most toys stores. For example, there aren't aisles nor end caps with stacks of toys. Personally, I find the layout of most toy stores to be boring and overwhelming. In lieu of the traditional setup, there are carefully arranged displays and sections featuring toys and / or related themes. To elaborate, a child who is a lover of unicorns can easily locate a few toys pertaining to this fascination. What's more exciting is he or she may also locate a unique beach ball, book, journal or sticker set representing unicorns. This is huge to me not only from a marketing standpoint, but as a mom who wasn't an advocate of buying toys "just because" for my daughter when she was growing up. My rule was toys are for holidays, but literacy is always. My daughter is almost 19 years old, but I managed to buy her a trinket while perusing this store. She's in love with sharks and I stumbled upon an adorable pen with a shark head. I'm sure this will make her next college essay draft slightly more exciting. ;) Another element of the store I enjoyed is the interaction with the staff. It was evident they enjoyed being part of the Blue Ridge Toys team. My cashier was warm and friendly. Most notable to mention is the store's owner Sandra. She exudes an enormous amount of positive energy and does a terrific job personalizing her guests' experiences. More profound, she is Clayton's best word of mouth! She not only works diligently in her own store, but works tirelessly to promote her neighboring businesses. I highly recommend checking out Blue Ridge Toys next time in Clayton. Whether or not you're in the market for toys, there's a possibility you'll pick up a cute gift or two. Be certain to check out the amazing painting near the entrance by local artist Lizzy Falcon. Some of her Pico collection stickers are available for sale and these are the perfect adornment to your child's binder or locker.

It has a small parking area right off the road. There is a wooden viewing platform built right off the road terminating in a platform about 8 x 15 feet wide and about 25 feet off the ground. This allows visitors to see below and out across the mountains to the east. It offers a nice view but not as spectacular as the ones from the visitors center. It is important to note that this location offers the Eastern view whereas the Visitor's center offers the southern view so it is unique in that respect. One of the trails originates from this same location. It is nice to see and has a nice informational display built onto the platform explaining the view. When first entering it looks like it is a tunnel through the trees but it opens into a better, broader view. It is worth a stop either on the way to the visitor's center or on the way back from the center. You may also want to visit the Foxfire museum right down the mountain a little bit. Enjoy.
