Great pizza! We stopped in early today. Easy menu to navigate in the small counter space area. We ordered 2 small and one large pizza. Crust and flavors - nailed it! The crust was soft on the inside and had great crunch outside. Charred perfectly! The gentleman who took our order and made the pizza brought them out to us along with plenty of plates and napkins. Outside Brickside Pizza there is plenty of places to sit. There is a great new coffee/tea/houseware shop that is worth checking out while you're waiting for your yummy pizza. read more

Best hidden secret for pizza in Ct. I've had a lot of different pizzas in my lifetime but what makes this pizza so special is the brick oven flavor, homemade sauce and fresh slices of mozzarella. The first time I had it I was in shock. No one made pizza like this. It's a little pricier than other pizza shops in the area but the ingredients substantiate the price. The pizza was good. Not blow your mind the best pizza I've ever had. That said it was a great combination of quality ingredients that made me appreciate how the chewy crust was made from 000 flour no doubt. The sauce was good but the reason why I didn't give it five stars was it was a bit dressed up with spices. Simple San marzano tomatoes with a touch of fresh garlic is all it really needs. Let the cheese and toppings do the work. I highly recommend canceling your trip to New Haven and give it a try. read more

Brickside Pizza opened in late summer in the Ivoryton village. They had us at the header of the menu where they declare, "Hand Crafted, wood fired pizza baked well done. Charring is to be expected.". Despite the effects of a steamy September afternoon and a bazillion degree brick oven, co-owners Paul Capezzone and Will Nuss were welcoming and informative. Veterans of various shoreline restaurant biz and pizza joints, the pair imported a brick oven from Italy and combined their experience to create this little gem of a shop. The rest of the interior consists soley of a pickup counter, a cord of wood and a fridge full of Foxon Park sodas. Although the menu offers both standard and a handful of curious toppings like mashed potato and shrimp scampi, I figured if they can get the Margherita and the White Clam right, then I can trust these guys. As soon as they took the bubbling White Clam masterpiece out of the blazing oven, I knew it was a winner. Freshly shucked, sweet clams are tossed atop a thin crust with garlic, olive oil, oregano, Pecorino Romano, then cooked to caramelized perfection. This was the best clam pizza I've had this side of New Haven. The Margherita was a close second. Yummy tomato sauce with a perfect punch of fresh flavor, basil ribbons, Mozzarella, more Pecorino, garlic and olive oil. This place is strictly take-out. No seating. Ordered two pizzas on a Friday night and the wait was over an hour. I don't think that's a bad wait for a Friday night, but when I picked up my pizzas they were cold. I ordered a white clam pizza and a mozzarella pizza. The white clam was good, lots of clams and garlic. The mozzarella pizza was so burnt I ended up throwing it out. I do understand with the type of stove they use the crust will be black but, the taste was burnt. I'm very disappointed because I've heard good things, I will not come back and will keep going to Otto in Chester or Centerbrook pizza. read more

We LOVE Brickside!! Not only are they super nice, and always give an exact time for pickup, but they have the best pizza! We eat here as a family almost once a week. They make a consistent pie with a perfect crust...not too crispy, not too chewy, not too bready, just the most solid all around pizza crust we've been able to find in the region. (It's even good cold the next day!) They always load up the toppings perfectly and it all tastes fresh. The owners are friendly and community oriented, hosting fundraisers and drives for local causes. We love their calzones and mashed potato pizza, and the kids love their red sauce with broccoli! I just recently ate a Brick Side and been going there since they open and by far there pizza is the best. It is mostly take out but now have picnic tables on the out side. They never disappoint. If you like New Haven style pizza you will love this place. We who live in CT don't know how lucky we have as CT pizza is the best. I also live in NC it is so hard to find any good pizza. I don't know which New Haven pizza you Yelpers are comparing this pizza to but perhaps your understanding of it isn't exactly the same as mine. First off, having a wood oven does NOT make it New Haven style pizza. I can't think of one famous New Haven joint that uses a wood oven. Not one. Secondly, the type of pizza made here is more like artisan style pizza. It's more like the associazione verace pizza napoletana certified pizza (for those that know what that is). So that means it's not greasy, oily, soupy, or have lots of stringy mozzarella (all things I love by the way). Yes, they do char the crust a little bit (not a lot) but that by itself hardly makes it New Haven style. Come to think of it, this pizza is more like Otto's pizza in Chester. So perhaps it should be called Chester pizza. Anyway, now that I got that off my chest. Yes, I like their pizza. It's not bad. I don't think it's worth the high price though and it could use a few improvements in my opinion. It could use some more sauce and more olive oil, particularly on the outer crust (outer crust is way too barren). It could use some more cheese too and also cut back on the salt. Yes New Haven pizza is very salty, but these guys are piling it on by the truckload in their sauce. If that's not salt then it's some other type of seasoning I can't recognize. By the way, I noticed they get some of their ingredients from Napoli Foods of Cheshire. The dead give-a-way is the Napoli logo printed on the underside of the box. I'm usually not a fan of Napoli foods. However they're like an Italian mob boss that rules southern Connecticut with an iron fist. It's hard to find a pizza joint that doesn't have their influence in one way or another. Unfortunately, the end result is that pizza from these joints ends up all tasting the same. Meh. I've have plenty if pizza, both good and not. I used to live near New Haven son an familiar with that as well as artisan pizzas made by various restaurants throughout CT and RI. My neighbors were racing about this place so I figured I would try it. Fresh ingredients and a New Haven style crust were promised. Maybe my expectations were set too high. I really wanted to love this pizza but it just doesn't live up to the hype. The toppings were super stingy. There was barely any cheese on it. I specifically was looking forward to that golden, nutty flavor of fresh mozzarella that other local joints won't provide. I couldn't even taste the cheese. There were only a couple of shrooms on it and the sauce was barely there. I felt like I had ordered a burnt crust with a side of sample toppings. Wish I took a picture of it. So Brickside opened on Tuesday and I went on Thursday after I heard they ran out of dough their first night open! Now brickoven pizza should be a 10 minute wait, max, however we had to wait 35 minutes. Since this is their first week, we'll let it slide. However, expecting improvements in order time within a few weeks. Will definitely be back, but call your order in ahead. I would love to find New Haven style pizza closer to home than New Haven and I thought this might be it. Not bad but not awesome enough to make a special return trip. Really stingy toppings. Need a magnifying glass to find the sausage and mushrooms. Pizza takes on a bit of the wood burning flavor which is interesting but a thing. Some charred areas took up alot of the pizza which if eating black burnt bits is what you like-there you go. This place has potential but not there yet. read more

I may be wrong, but I do not like burnt pizza. Also, when someone orders a veggie pizza they expect to see veggies on the pizza. Instead there was eggplant the size of a penny, no exaggeration, and the spinach was dried and crispy. I want to support my local businesses but this was just not good pizza. My advice: cook the pizza, do not burn it, and then put roasted veggies on after the pizza is out of the oven. You have a brick oven so making roasted veggies should be easy, and put a good amount of veggies on there. $20 for a medium pie with not even a normal serving size of veggies is not good. i almost rate a 5, but have a slight hesitation. Saturday afternoon and it was quiet. The restaurant has ONE table inside which was fortunately available. If not, there would have been a dilemma, where to eat ? The two owners are GREAT. They are striving for artisan pizza and take great care in the preparation and cooking process......very caring and focused. On this quiet afternoon, they were engaging, but not obtrusive, totally enjoyed them. The standard meatball, roasted peppers, cheese was very good (half with spinach). Ample toppings assembled with great care. They are fussy and it shows. The crust was slightly charred from the wood fired oven, cooked PERFECTLY. So, the crust was flavorful with good texture, the toppings were very good, enjoyed the pizza very much. On a whim, added a white clam pizza (Fresh Clams) and it was AWESOME..........Loved it. All in all, the food and experience was great. I will have issues with the table not being available and that is a concern. ***With such a limited menu and obscure location, I see issues. I will definitely return for pizza. I think they should expand the menu slightly to offer grinders ( meatball, cold cut, ham, roast beef, veggie ) to satisfy those who may not want a whole pizza.
