Here to write an update. I've been coming here since we moved here 7 years ago, and they're still one of my favorites. Food is delicious. Owners are the nicest people and great customer service every time. I'm surprised by anyone saying it's not cooked enough. I think it's perfect. There's literally been 2 times(in 7 years, that's not bad) where they cooked it a little more than usual, and I actually did NOT like it. I ended up just peeling the toppings off and eating them without the crust those 2 times. Please don't change the way you cook your pizza. read more

I'm not sure why this place gets such good reviews. First, they are ripping customers off by doing a credit card surcharge was is illegal in the state of Connecticut. Prices listed are what you pay, you can only discount if a customer pays with cash, they cannot upcharge to pay with a card. We went here tonight to takeout food before the Essex train ride and had the most wonderful experience. My son has severe allergies and they were so patient with us as we asked about ingredients for multiple items and changed our order. They helped us find something he can be safely eat and even showed us ingredient labels to help check. The food was great, the owners were soooooo kind. We will be back for sure. Called my order in at 6:40......arrived to pick it up at 7pm. There were TWO tables in the restaurant, TWO small pizza boxes waiting for pick up, one pizza in the oven, and one party walked in after me. I have been eating here since the 90's. It's good and simple. I always get a steak grinder. The pizza needs to be cooked longer though, it's good but they never cook it long enough. Pizza should be crispy and the cheese should brown up a bit, pepperoni should have a crisp edge. Other than that, nice people and nice place. read more

Being sent to the east coast for work isn't so bad when you find little places like this. fast friendly service. good appetizer (piping hot garlic bread with cheese). Our super friendly waitress gave us a beatiful bowl of Marinara sauce to use for dipping. mmmm + Parmesan. the pizza was piping hot, thick crust and so fresh. warm atmosphere and most that came in were known by first name by the employees and owner. My review is for the food . The food is awesome but half the time SERVICE SUCKS !! I decided to treat myself to some lunch ,I Came in and I sat. For fifteen minutes I sat . Never once was I acknowledged . The waitress who had a permanent scowl on her face never glanced in my direction when she walked past me TWICE . Their were only two tables with customers who already had their food . I motioned for her to come over that I was ready and was told "in a minute" - the attitude . I was having a bad day that was the last thing I needed and THEY WEREN'T EVEN BUSY . After that I just left . Absolutely ridiculous . Several months later my mother and I went their for lunch . My moms choice. I reluctantly agreed . This time we had fabulous service . The waitress was very attentive and personable. We got the fish and chips special . It was brought out in a timely manner and cooked perfectly ! I was blown away . My one bad experience was corrected by this wonderful waitress . So I guess it's a hit or a miss . We came here on a whim after riding Thomas the Train. The owner was very friendly and accommodated our 10 person party. We also brought in cupcakes for my daughters birthday and they graciously kept the cupcakes cool in their refrigerator. The pizza was great - a large pepperoni was plenty for four adults and two toddlers with pizza to take home. Other guests enjoyed the burgers and veggie quesadilla. The setting was lovely - we ate overlooking a waterfall. If we decide to visit Essex Steam Train again, we will stop here again afterwards. read more

Clean, good service. Been in the area forever. If you like the cakier kind of crust over the flat thin crust, these guys do it right. Let's face it, pizza is pizza. Both of the pizzas I tried were overpriced and almost criminally under-seasoned, which should have been hard to do on taco and clam 'n garlic pizzas. I almost felt bad for the waitresses, what with having to weave in and out of a three family/four table mess in the corner of the restaurant but... well, if you're not willing to keep your clientele under control, you get what you deserve.
