I honestly don't understand the bad reviews at all. These are dogs that have been rescued from high kill shelters and often have been through very traumatic events. Their purpose is to try to find the best fit possible for these dogs so as to make sure these dogs aren't put through more trauma and have forever homes. With that, merely putting in an application for a dog doesn't guarantee you're the best fit for the dog you're interested in compared to somebody else. From what I understand they will often take a while to go through their applications because they want to make sure the dog gets adopted by the best candidate for the dog. There are plenty of dogs my fiancé and I could've applied for and probably would've been denied for because they just wouldn't have been a good fit. Also...I'm sorry, but given the fact that this is a RESCUE, not a breeder or whatever, they can't guarantee the breed of the dog ffs. Since they're a non-profit I don't think they have the funds for DNA tests when they're often funding medical treatment etc for the dogs they're rescuing. If you're heart set on adopting a breed, don't rescue I guess? We adopted our dog several days ago and we are in love. His foster family was amazing and we even have made a point to stay in touch with them so they can see how he's doing :) It took Becca/the fosters a few days to get back to us but the process was exactly as expected given the fact that they clearly wanted to extensively look through applications. I'm very disappointed that my adoption application through Brighter Days Animal Rescue was denied because I wasn't open to professional training. I have adopted and cared for pets throughout my lifetime. I have worked from home for many years, which has allowed me to dedicate a great deal of time and attention to my animals. I have also worked with and rehabilitated many pets successfully, and I have never had a need for professional training. I understand the importance of making sure animals are placed in safe, loving homes. However, I don't believe that declining an adoption solely because I am not willing to pay for professional training is reasonable or an accurate reflection of my ability to care for a pet. I have the experience and knowledge to work with my own animals, and I have references who can speak to the care I provide. My pets are not simply animals in my home, they are part of my family. I take their care and well-being very seriously, and I have always provided them with a loving, stable environment. I have a well‑kept, fenced‑in backyard that borders open space. I filled out their form and waited for a response, but none came. Three weeks into the process, I reached out for an update--any update--and still received nothing. They have been extremely unprofessional. Stay far, FAR away from this place!! Inexperienced, uneducated, and rude people are all you will find. They care more about making money than finding the best fit for their dogs, and their attitude towards potential adopters makes that abundantly clear. Not to mention $300-800 for a RESCUE dog is absolutely absurd even with vetting. Claiming to pull dogs from high kill shelters all over the country when they're only truly pulling cutesy small dogs they can make a pretty penny off of. Having worked at an animal shelter for years I have a pretty good grasp on how they should function, and it is pretty much the exact opposite of what BDDR has shown me. Meet and greets at the foster dog's home instead of neutral ground without any Brighter Days personnel even actively present is enough for one to turn and run. Then stating that a "successful meet and greet" simply means the two dogs didn't fight? Yikes. Sad standards. The two dogs didn't fight so it's okay even though the potential adoptee was showing clear signs of unease and aggression throughout the entire meet and greet? So both dogs long term comfort and wellbeing and the adopters peace of mind is completely irrelevant? Why are we letting people that can't even read basic dog body language foster these animals and make adoption decisions? The goal of any true, legitimate animal rescue should be to find best fit for that specific animal. Not to quickly pass them in to the first home that comes along so you can make your $800 and then get upset when adopters change their mind in the BEST INTEREST OF THAT ANIMAL. Holding a change of heart against potential adopters and then refusing to let them even look at any of your other dogs is a childish and unprofessional move. And the only ones that suffer from it are the poor animals in your care. Put your petty, personal feelings aside and do better. Do better for the animals. read more

I'm going to try to keep this as short and to the point as I can because I'm so done giving energy to this place. We applied to adopt Jimmy, who has been with a foster for what looks like over four months now. The application was long and arduous and incredibly detailed, but I was happy to fill it out in its entirety with as much detail as I could. I got a call just a few days later - surprising, considering how many reviews say they never heard back. I spoke to Tammy, a volunteer, and I thought we had a fine interaction. We shared a few laughs and a few awww moments, though she was generally pretty condescending. She mentioned she called our vet and learned our dog's vaccinations weren't up to date (then made a comment about how we all forget to keep these things up to date from time to time), so she would need me to do that before we could move forward. She told me, verbatim, that my application was one of the better ones they've received. Needless to say, I left this interaction feeling very positive. I went to our vet THAT DAY and got our vaccinations updated, then sent her proof and some photos of our pets, as requested. Didn't hear back for 10 days, during which time I followed up twice and apologized if I was appearing overly eager - Tammy eventually replied and said it's good to be eager in these cases, and she understood, but unfortunately Jimmy had been adopted. She said I should text her directly if we came across any other pups we were interested in. That was about a month ago. Jimmy is still on their website with new photos, and they just put up a new post about him on Instagram. My frustrated husband commented on the post asking why we had been told Jimmy was adopted already, and said it would have been respectful and professional for them to tell us we weren't qualified rather than lying to us...and they blocked him for it. He went to Facebook and the same thing happened. Good thing they can't block Yelp reviews. If you think you'll be working with a serious organization, you'll be sorely disappointed. I appreciate wanting to find the best home for their dogs, and they have the authority to make that decision. But as a professional business, raking in community donations and exorbitant adoption fees to run their operation (even though they seem entirely volunteer based??), they need to learn to respect the community they serve and communicate like grown ups. read more

Reading a lot of these reviews, many reviewers said it took weeks to hear back or not at all. After almost 90 minutes filling out the application I was under the impression that it would take weeks to go over and send out a response. But for me it was a matter of hours. I was told I was not worthy of adopting a dog because I live in a condo. But I guess that living in a shelter in a cage is a lot better than being in a condo. I guess being on the verge of being euthanized is better than living in a condo. I already have one dog and he is thriving in a condo. It's amazing to me how people look at people who get dogs from a breeder with disgust. But the hoops these shelters make you jump through, the money they expect you to spend and the expectations they want you to live up to in order to adopt a dog that was a stray, abandoned or on the kill list... come on! My husband and I recently applied to adopt a dog from Brighter Days Dog Rescue. It was our 1st experience with attempting to adopt from a rescue, after the loss of our almost 17 yr old jack russell last Sept. who we got when he was 8 weeks old. The application was VERY long and took me well over an hour to complete. I applied for 1 small dog specifically. We live in a paired home about 1250 sq ft with no yard, but our community has 2 huge dog parks and we also would walk our pet daily. Although we appreciate all that rescues do for animals in need, it is discouraging that the communication on their part wasn't better. We also applied to another Boulder rescue with similar results. On a positive note, we have since adopted our Blue Heeler from the Humane Society of South Platte Valley. Our first experience with a Humane Society and they were amazing. I have tried twice to adopt a dog through better days dog rescue, however in the process of doing so I realize a few things. number one I will never be qualified to be up to their standards for adoption number two the fact that I have two 100 pound labradors outdoors at my 5 acre property means that I will never qualify for a dog at BDDR as this is considered by them cruel to the labradors. My dogs have a heated and air-conditioned garage in which to escape any inclement weather however, I did not get the chance to even explain this to BDR before being refused adoption. The dog that I wanted could have been $1000 and I would have paid it however I feel that the fees are excessive in any case. I feel that there is exclusion of adoptive parents of the dogs based on political leanings as well as personal preferences rather than true and reasonable criteria. The fact that I am in Northeast Colorado disqualifies me as I am too far away from their preferred veterinarian and I wonder whether or not this is even true. I cannot and will not apply for a dog through this agency again, though there are many deserving dogs in their care. I guess 5 acres and a heated and air-conditioned garage are not satisfactory for my other dogs,so I will try elsewhere. Additionally, my voting preferences appear to have played a role in the choice of a pet parent from this facility. my 1st negative review, it's that bad. I work in healthcare and I am use to taking a lot of bs from random people but this was absurd. I hope the fosters are aware this place is intimidating awesome dog families with single family homes , fenced back yards and active lifestyles from adopting a rescue dog to be part of the family. Whoever Tammy is she has no business screening prospective dog owners. I have never before felt so judged/ shamed and borderline violated. A week after submitting the ridiculous application for a specific dog I was interviewed , but was more like the Spanish inquisition. Questions answered were followed up with her opinionated retort. It's not an assessment of your "worthiness" to over-pay for one of their dogs but more an opportunity for them to exert a holier than thou attitude to correct your perceived ineptitudes. After saying i would be willing to pay $5000 in emergency services for an injured or sick animal I was told that should not be a hard upper number regardless of their quality of life as vet fees can easily be much higher than that. wtf? She presumed I did not have the experience needed to potty train even though we have a dog who we just successfully potty trained. She said we would be potty training again like it an insurmountable chore that I never considered a puppy or rescue would need some behavioral interventions ...but she didn't even know what dog I was applying for or if they were available Was shamed about food choices and told not to listen to veterinary specialist nutrition advice "you wouldn't feed you kids that 3 times a day now would you??". Lawd!! They are very interested about our cat and their life story too. Was told my references would be called and then contacted by the foster. Gotta agree with the other reviews. They posted on their social media how adoption applications have been very slow and that they have dogs that have been awaiting forever homes for weeks/months, yet they sometimes do and sometimes do not reply in a timely fashion. I submitted my application which took a little over an hour to do (to ensure I was accurate and descriptive), got in touch with references to let them know to expect a call/email just in case, but no verification upon submission of application. I reached out to confirm it was received, and I did hear back about 36 hours later from them, telling me my info was received and that they would be in touch. Over a week passes, nothing. I reach out again, no response. They reach out to me today to let me know the pooch I wanted to rescue was adopted by another party. I submitted my application six hours after they listed her, she remained on their website for over two weeks, and all of the above.. I just don't understand why it was handled this way. EDIT: I forgot to mention, my references were never contacted and they never asked me for additional information, they simply told me the pooch I was interested in was adopted by another party and that they would be happy to keep my application on file..no other detail. I honestly think I should ask them to remove all of my personal information from their systems, who knows what it is used for. I have rescued dogs before and the process was never as daunting as it is with this rescue. I had to fill out a VERY detailed application, then I got to be berated on the phone for about a half hour telling me how terrible of a dog owner I am. I tried to be understanding but I felt like totally crap afterwards. The main issues were I was feeding the wrong food(grain-free, expensive dog kibble), and the fact that my 14 year old rescue Shih Tzu wasn't spayed. I got her when she was 5 years old and never planned on having another dog. Add in, at the time I was going through a divorce, and in the process I was selling my house. I tried to explain all of this to the lady on the phone, that at the time my priority wasn't getting my dog spayed, and all I was told was that I was "lucky" she never got pregnant...I should have been worried about immaculate conception apparently. Went through all of this to get an email stating they don't give out dogs to homes with dogs that aren't fixed-why not just decline my application in the first place and not break my heart?!?! read more

The "manager" of this organization, Becca, is heartless and cruel! When I had to return a dog because it was not a good fit for neither the dog nor our household; Becca was curt and rude and made comments definitely designed to make me feel retched about having to return the dog. I was already suffering in having to make that difficult decision and did not appreciate her guilt-blaming comments! She made an already stressful situation just more negative and unbearable. I feel the dog was misrepresented on their site! They said he was was up to 2.5 years old, but I think he was actually under a year old because his behavior was very puppy-ish - and that was WAY too rowdy for my 10 year old dog and for me. I told them my dog was 10 and that I was 78, so they should have determined that a hyper-active tiny dog would not be a good match. And, most importantly, because he was completely undisciplined and "all over the place"; he kept running around under my feet, and tripped me four times. (One of those times I actually fell on the floor and got scared that it was going to happen over and over). He turned out to be an actual detriment to my safety. So, within 24 hours, I recognized that the darling little dog would never work out. I explained that I was scared to death of falling because of the dog, and that his hyper energy did not suit my older elderly dog - so, that the best for ALL involved was to get him back to his foster. And even though it was only 24 hours that we had him, and a big part of the reason for retuning was my safety and health.....they did not return my $500. So I ended up driving three hours total and paid $500, and have no dog. And Becca was so heartless on top of all that. It was a bad experience! If you want to adopt a dog from them, that is great because all the doggies need homes, but know that dealing with Becca is a very unpleasant! And be aware that your money is non refundable, no matter the amount of time time you had the animal, nor if the return involved safety concerns! read more

If I could give them less than one star I would. EXTREMLY POOR COMMUNICATION- I'm not talking days to get back to you. WEEKS will go by and you'll hear nothing. If they don't approve your application they won't tell you they just let you keep waiting patiently. GOD COMPLEX- Your application will take well over an hour to complete and if your not perfect don't even bother applying (unless you're willing to be dishonest, which I was not willing to do, but to each their own). Expectations are set extremly high for adopters and while dogs are being euthanized at high kill shelters these foster homes are holding on for 100% perfect adopters. My recommendation would be to go straight to the high kill shelters and not waste one minute or one puppy life waiting on these guys to get back to you . Dogs are dying while you're waiting. I THINK where they find their puppies should be investigated just to see if THEY are being honest. I THINK the non profit organization called brighter days dog rescue should be investigated to see if they truly are adopting out dogs or using this as a way to avoid taxes for their realty business and fund their personally owned expensive rescue dogs. ‍ Just compare this rescues rating to puppy stores in the CO area. Their ratings are lower than puppy stores in the area --- not something to be proud of if ya ask me. Lots of red flags. Research your rescues before you decide who to go with. I was connected with the foster parent of a dog I was interested in and I started asking questions to learn more about the dog and whether or not he would be a good match. I view it as looking for a lifelong family member and take the information gathering seriously. This foster parent could not answer the majority of questions because, as she put it, she is fostering SIX DOGS and cannot give them all attention that in itself is wildly irresponsible of this rescue. You should not take in more dogs than you can manage. She did not have time to walk them or bring them in public to see how they respond, etc etc. On top of that, they then reached out to me to express concern about me asking questions about dogs I was considering committing to. They expect that adopters will take any dog, regardless of fit, and just make it work. I don't want to detour from an adoption, but families should be aware before adopting from BDDR. We adopted our girl in Dec. 2019, and were told, with confidence, that she was cattle dog/Great Pyrenees mix. Becca stated that our pup came from Kansas with 2 siblings, and the owner did not expect pups, so they were surrendered to BDDR. After a few weeks home, our pup was not looking or acting as either breed we were told. This was important because different breeds require different training methods. I sent for a DNA and when the results came back I was shocked. She does not have an ounce of Great Pyrenees- in fact she is nearly 1/2 Pitbull and then mixed breeds of several types of breeds. The DNA confirms the mother of our pup was/is a Pitbull. It's hard for me to believe that BDDR did not know - and the longer I watch their rescue site, the easier it is for me to believe that we were provided false information for an adoption and they received a 450.00 payment. Since our adoption, we have seen many puppies on their site who look identical to our pup. I live in a town where it is illegal to own a Pitbull, yet here I am as an owner of one. Overall, we will love her, but buyer beware. We really wanted a GP, and looked past full breeds and breeders to rescue; believing we were doing the right thing. Now, we will never have a GP join our family due to the false information sold to us by Becca and her "rescue." read more

Very disappointed in the adoption process. I completed an application online and was approved. I then inquired about a dog and was told she was pending adoption. I asked about 2 others and a few days later received a response that they too were pending adoption. I was advised to be vigilant when looking at the website because puppies get adopted quickly. I inquired about a dog the same day it was posted and almost a week later was again told she had been adopted. It would be nice if they could somehow update their website to show dogs that are pending adoption so I could move onto another or because they know what I am looking for have them send me a couple available dogs to interview with. I understand that they are probably volunteers and are busy, but you have someone who wants to adopt a dog! Becca seems to care less. read more

I can say with absolute confidence that the care that Brighter Days provides each of their rescue dogs in foster is outstanding. Extremely disappointed with our experience. We love our little puppy that we got from them however she is not the breed that was originally stated and we are running into serious problems training her as a result. Also the paperwork we received on her was incomplete and none of the information given could be verified by our vet. Not having a complete or accurate history on her has created a lot of problems that we are currently working on resolving but we have a long road ahead of us and had we had all the information to begin with we would have made a different decision. My wife and I have never adopted a pet before. Our first pet came from a breeder. Filled out the incredible lengthy application, but was happy they took such an interest in finding a safe and reliable home. YET, this place doesn't let you know the application has been received. They have still yet to answer an email asking if it was received. Sent them a facebook message, they read it but no response. No wonder so many pets need to be adopted if this is their process. You'd think they would have the courtesy of at least letting me know they received the app and are working on it, especially since they currently only have 2 dogs up on their website. I'm finding this treatment to be pretty common across many of the smaller rescue organizations in the area that seem to be in over their heads. I applaud their concern for the animals but it appears they lack any sense of customer service or business acumen. I have worked with many pet adoption organizations in the past, including now, in the time of COVID-19. It didn't work out for me to adopt a dog with Brighter Days this time around, but they will be a go-to rescue for me in the future! The rescue was fast-working and highly responsive. The dog I was interested in turned out not to be a good fit for my home and family, but Becca still took time to give me tips and talk to me specifically about recommendations. She emailed me a week later when they rescued some new pups that seemed like they would be a good fit. I think Rescue organizations are always going to get some negative reviews when potential adopters don't like to be told "No," even when the reasons make sense, are backed by expertise, and are in the best interests of BOTH the dogs and adoptive families. However, Becca is a straight shooter with a palpable compassion for the animals she rescues and a strong commitment to getting these dogs into the best forever homes. 5+ stars!!! Adopters beware. We adopted a dog back in august. He does great with our other dog but we found out after the fact that he had been a stray prior to rescue. This has shown tremendously in his behavior. He has been escaping our yard any chance he gets (fenced in) and then began nipping at our young children in the face. Completely unprovoked. We worked with him for months. We reached out to the trainer and spoke with many others including a foster mom herself and our vet. It was decided that he probably just wasn't the right fit for young children. This was an incredibly hard decision to make. And months in the making. When I reached out to the owner and expressed our concerns the only response I received back was which trainer did you use followed by an "incredibly disappointing"  and that she would try to find a foster.  I sent multiple emails with info about the dog and asking if I could PLEASE get a response (after he nipped my sons nose and then my daughters cheek  AGAIN) Which I did not. Until I finally commented on a social media post. At that point the response was the most unprofessional I had ever seen. She told me word for word "it's not like this dog is going to eat your children in the night, and even if it were there would be other options" also told me it's not that hard to keep the dog away from my young children. Muzzle it if I have to. This was an entirely different response than she allowed the public to see on social media. Although she wasn't kind there either and mentioned "dumping my family member" I was shocked. Our dog was taken to his new foster and I emailed again offering grace considering the stress she must be under with the fires in the general area etc. And of course- still crickets. So please please please- remember how this was handled before you adopt a dog through this rescue. If it doesn't work out- you will be treated like you are the worst human being in the world. No matter the reason (young kids being in danger with face nipping) thankfully the foster mom was sweet as can be an reassured me that it's ok and things like this happen. I would never recommend this place to anyone as adopting a dog can be an emotional thing- especially when it doesn't work out. We also didn't even receive the correct paperwork for neuter for the dog we adopted. Unorganized and terrible professionalism. read more

I would not recommend this rescue if you are seriously looking to adopt a dog. I submitted an online application, and heard nothing back in 5 days. I followed up via email to see if I was approved or if the dog was even still available. Radio silence. I then tried to reach out to the rescue on Facebook and Instagram, thinking other volunteers might run these accounts. Ignored. Rebecca finally responded to me that the dog I was interested in was on the East Coast because his family was in the hospital (??) and she did not know when he would be returned to CO. I do not think he was with the foster family, but the previous adoptive family who was relinquishing him. I find this to be a bit dishonest - the dog had not even been returned to the rescue yet was posted to the website. The website also indicated that the previous owners had a wealth of info on the dog, none of which was offered or sent to me. Between the complete unresponsiveness, vague story explaining why the dog was not in CO, and lack of a real contact method, I would concur with other folks here and recommend you do NOT use this rescue if you are serious about adopting a dog. I cannot recommend this rescue outfit. After being approved (their application is lengthy and I specified my dog preferences), I saw a dog on line that interested me greatly and immediately emailed Brighter Days 3 times (no response) and finally called the owner, Becca, who told me the dog already had a "meet and greet" scheduled. Then she texted me saying the dog was mine (no explanation as to why the other M and G didn't work out). I went to the foster home to meet the pooch and asked for a 24 hour hold, which the foster mother granted. Becca rescinded this, texting me at 8:21 PM on Saturday night, telling me I had until 8:00 AM the next morning (Sunday) or she would move on with other meet and greets. Really?!!! So I took the dog and then learned that he has very serious leash aggression, which resulted in an injury to my partner. I sent her photos from the hospital ER as evidence. Her response? "He may have some leash aggression or excitement since we never walked him that often...". This is not someone who genuinely cares about the welfare of dogs. Obviously, the goal is to move the highest number of dogs as quickly as possible. There was never a follow-up call/text/email. Their entire process is disturbing and uncaring. I do not recommend this rescue. My husband and I recently considered adopting a rescue and we found a puppy that we fell in love with. We were picked for one of the puppies in the group and went and met it on Saturday. We were able to bring it home on Sunday. They never checked our references, never checked our home so not sure why they bother with a application that takes you an hour and half to fill out. By Monday evening the puppy started getting sick. It started throwing up its food and then couldn't keep water down. We put the puppy in a kennel over night and when we got up around 4 am the puppy had very mucous filled diarrhea all over the kennel. The puppy was lethargic and had no energy. I called the foster to see if I could get Becca to call me back as the puppy needed a vet visit. The foster would not give me Becca's number and you can't find a number on the website. I finally got a text back and she asked me if the puppy was ill from the food we were feeding it. I called her immediately and told her the puppy was very sick. The puppy did not want to leave the kennel, eat or drink anything. Becca refused to let us take the puppy to their vet. She literally laughed at me and asked if I had read the contract as the contract states they are not responsible for any care once you adopt the dog. My thought was we literally had the dog less than 48 hours so this should not fall on us as being our financial responsibility as we thought we were getting a healthy dog. She was extremely rude and not helpful at all on the phone. I then called three different local vets and every single one said the puppy likely had parvo or distemper based on the symptoms and the vet bills would run thousands. I called Becca back and said we wanted to return the puppy as we were not going to take on 2-3 thousand dollar vet bills for a puppy we had less than two days. I asked if we could get our fee back and she told us she could not answer that as we had a contract stating we would lose the money if we returned the puppy. She did offer to let us take the puppy to the foster so she could treat the puppy and we could get the puppy back. I asked if the foster was a vet and she said no. This did not seem reasonable to me. The puppy clearly needed vet care. I finally told her after going back and forth with her for hours that we were just going to bring the puppy back. My husband left work and we made the drive back to Thornton. We then get a text as we are driving the puppy back that they wold allow us to take the puppy to red rocks vet clinic, but that we would need to call them to make an appointment. Why did she not offer this at 8 in the morning and now she is offering this at 2 in the afternoon as we are returning the puppy. I was very upset at this point. I had missed work for the day, my husband had to leave work in order to return the puppy. By this point we just said we were returning the dog we didn't want the run around any longer. The puppy literally had not moved, ate or drank the whole time we had it and 10 minutes after we dropped the puppy off at the foster (not with Becca) Becca texted me and said the puppy was healthy, playing and eating. I call bull crap. To me this was just a slap in my face. I asked the following day if I could get any part of my deposit back which was $445 and Becca told me I was not her priority and that I would have to wait for her to return any money if she did on her time in the next week or so. She was very rude in the text and very unprofessional. We did end up getting back some money, but not all after everything we went through we lost over $200, don't have a puppy, missed hours at work and are out all of the money we spent on food and all the new puppy supplies we just purchased. Becca could really care less about you or what you are going through. I would stear clear of this rescue unless you want a nightmare of an ordeal and want to just hand your money over for nothing. read more

We adopted an 8 week old puppy for $395.00 on a Wednesday. The pup developed diarrhea shortly after. We were then informed by the Foster Mom that his litter mates were sick with Parvo and inquired as to the condition of our pup. We told her he had the runs but seemed healthy otherwise. She advised us to take him to the Vet (this was on a Saturday) as they had already lost 2 of the 6 to the sickness. We took him in to our Vet and, thank goodness, he tested negative. Due to the weekend visit, we were charged an emergency fee of $130.00 + $5.00 for the test. Becca at Brighter Days had told me the fee would be covered and would go to the Board if the fee was more to get the money. Our Vet's office called her (Becca) today regarding the charge and Becca emphatically told her that they were not paying even though we were told they would cover the fee. I wold not recommend adopting from this agency. They are not concerned with the health of the pets, just want the money. read more
