When my mother moved into the Gables she experienced an enhanced assisted living environment for retired individuals. From daily check-ins with staff, to full meal and bistro dining options, housekeeping, maintenance, home care aids, and transportation services the Gables truly has thought of everything you might need at some point during your residence with them. Lovely apartments with easy access to elevators and community areas, residents truly have the independence they desire along with the personal and home services they require. The Gables coordinates additional home care and nursing services with other agencies making sure residents have the care and medical supervision they may need. A lovely, well staffed dining room provides residents a community dining experience and if a resident prefers a meal in, delivery is available. Every meal provides menu options. Physical therapy is available on site as well as hairdressing and other personal services. A dedicated bus can be reserved to take residents to medical appointments in addition to transporting groups to outings, such as to a restaurant or shopping center or museum. Seasonal outings are offered including foliage rides, Holiday light viewing, and trips of all kinds in the surrounding communities. New activities such as Life Stories, Tech Support, a Blood Pressure clinic, and Flu and COVID Vaccine clinics have been added to their schedule. This alludes to what is possibly the best feature of the Gables - the plethora of fun, social activities that are available on a daily basis. Regular weekly activities include exercise programs such as chair yoga, exercise to music, strength and stretching, corn hole and bean bag toss. Residents can take advantage of challenging and brain enhancing activities include trivia, crossword, puzzles, and current events. A book group and well stocked library are available for use. The Gables organizes a range of options to be creative including flower arranging, painting with watercolors, and crafts such as hat making and wreath making. Game sessions include BINGO, board games, Mah Jong, cribbage, billiards, bridge, and checkers. Residents have a chance to test their luck with Pokeno. Entertainers and musicians use the main lobby and piano to serenade as well as encourage sing alongs. A therapy dog and pony visit the residents. Then we've had some gems take care of my aunt. I would say that if not for the people on the front line that are there because they are in elderly care for the right reasons, the place would be completely miserable. Thankfully there are some good and caring clinicians. Transparency is not a strong point for BBV. Neither is coordination. My aunt had moved to different areas for different levels of care and each time it feels rushed, pressured and doomed to a horrible transition. For the cost, you would hope that BBV would have moving coordinators that are helpful but nope. I would not recommend this place. It's pretty, and like I said, some beautiful people here and there but the admin is horrible to deal with by and large.

I had asked my brother-in-law if he would like me to be his advocate. He thought that would be great and appreciated my suggestion. I live on the West Coast and of course Brooksby is on the East Coast. I knew that because of HEPA laws staff are not supposed to talk to family members without written permission or consent form. I called their case manager and my brother-in-law's nurse over 15 times in one week and left voice messages. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK! When I finally reached someone in the administration office, I explained the situation and asked if she would please call me back either way to let me know what's going on. I STILL have not heard from anyone. Although I live 3000 miles away, I am the closest relative that still has cognitive abilities. All three of my younger sisters have Alzheimer's. I was hospitalized with shortness of breath which doctors thought I had a heart attack on top of a bad case of bronchitis. The cardiologist performed a cardiac catheterization and told me that my heart was "great." He asked if I had been under stress and diagnosed me with broken heart syndrome due to the stress I had caused by the total lack of communication between Brooksby regarding my family members and myself. NO ONE YET HAS CALLED ME BACK! It's been about 4-6 weeks. My family pay an exorbitant amount of money and Brooksby cannot return a phone call? Family care is good healthcare. I would not recommend Brooksby to anyone considering putting themselves or a loved one in that facility.

The ambiance is one of a Victorian mansion with pretty landscaping, porches, rocking chairs and pretty grounds to wander. The interior is warm with use of dark and medium woods, a grand staircase plus amenities such as a pub, dining room, lounging areas to socialize, exercise/tv room. It makes for a good impression during a site visit. The sales pitch is very good as you are told what you want to hear in how well your aging parent(s) will be taken cared of. The reality is a different story. The food is almost unpalatable and if you complain it falls on deaf ears. Actually deaf ears is what this location does best. The rooms are comfortable but every member of the staff has a key to get in but there is not method of tracking who enters the room and at what time. This is important since theft occurs and since there is no way to track who enters your room and when, the staff get away with it. The staff must be low paid and basically look at their job as a j-o-b with very little passion for what they are doing. My mother had her laundry done and it is supposed to be folded for her but on more than one occasion, the staff simply dumped it on her bed and left. I have visited her on a number of occasions and found her door literally open to the hallway with anyone having easy access to get in. Security is a joke as anyone can walk in, get on the elevators and do whatever. When a resident complains the staff, including the directors and managers, treat them as old people who don't know what theyre talking about. This place is simply not the best choice for assisted living. They romance you with the facility and tell you what you want to hear but living here is a different matter. We moved my mother out of here to another facility that really has their act together and she has never been happier.

At 97, comfort was the best medicine for her final five years. That's right. This being the right place for her was a major reason she lived to 102. But it wasn't just the layout and character of the building, inside and out. It was the amazing staff. A staff who made her feel as though she was with family. Such an atmosphere of care and compassion. Taking care of her every need. Which made it very easy for her children to come and go. And we did. All through those final years we watched mom relax and mix with the community. She was happy and comfortable. Comfortable in her new home but just as comfortable with her new community. This facility works so well with so much individual attention, mom was able to be herself and enjoy time with the neighbors. Believe me this could not be the case in some of the other larger places she looked at. Mom's family, her kids, spent a good deal of time there and we had so many rewarding interactions with everyone of the staff members. Each with their own strength and every one of them with a cheerful approach. The five of us, along with our partners and children will be ever thankful to the wonderful staff, in every area, and the residents who treated mom like a sister. We chose New Horizons at Choate in Woburn which is part of the Cummings Foundation. It is a non-profit facility for independent and assisted living. From the moment we walked in we knew this place was something special. It wasn't the fanciest or the biggest, but all the people were warm and welcoming. The place was "alive". My mother ended up spending 6 1/2 wonderful years at Choate. Even through the pandemic she was kept safe, fed and was visited by staff. She passed away suddenly on February 3, 2023 at age 93 1/2. The staff at Choate love working at the facility. Because of this they have amazingly real longevity. There are college students who help serve meals to earn college scholarships. There are ice cream socials and parties. The activities and games vary depending on the clientele at the moment. There is always Bingo, educational programs, music, art, movies and exercise classes. There are van trips to the local museums, sight-seeing and stores. If you have a car you may park it on-site free of charge. They have a hairdresser. They serve three amazing home cooked meals a day, and coffee, soda, wine, snacks are all included. My mother also played Bridge, joined the book club, played trivia, Scrabble, Poker and Texas hold-um. Because there are only 100 beds, the meals come out hot, and one always has a choice for meals. My mother was always impressed with the holiday meals, which often included huge cocktail shrimp, filet mignon and Limonchello cake. There is always great dessert! We share this review because we think New Horizon's at Choate is a top notch, five-star facility. Not a fancy place, but truly an environment filled with love, caring people and staff.
