The room was clean, quiet, and the bed was super comfortable. The food was the highlight. The French toast was amazing--easily some of the best I've ever had. We also loved the evening wine and charcuterie. Do yourself a favor and try the marinated mushrooms and the garlic-stuffed green olives. They were outstanding. If you're looking for a relaxing place to stay with great food and wonderful hospitality, I highly recommend the Black Bear Inn.

The decor was vintage and excellent shape. Pam our host was nice, answered texts immediately. The hotel came with a brochure, explaining the history. Built in the 1940s by Mr. Moore using handmade cement bricks and an adobe tile roof, it was a product of his work at the now-closed Calaveras Cement plant. Highway 49, then a dirt road, passed by, and the motel catered to travelers. In the 1970s, Bonnie Janssen purchased it, renaming it Bonnie's Inn and transforming it into a welcoming place filled with antiques and art. After a period of closure, the inn was purchased in 2021 and continues to offer a unique experience for travelers on Highway 49 in the Historic Gold Country.

First, let me say that this is advertised as a bed and breakfast. It passes the test on the breakfast part. It failed on the bed, the room and other things. Second, let me say that my lady and I enjoyed Sandy Sanders, the proprietor. She is a nice person who tries her best. She makes a huge effort to stay out of the way of the lodgers, but is there with the coffee at your room door at 7 am, breakfast at 9 am and snacks and wine at 5 pm. Her cat, Ceecee, travels with her and is very friendly. Now for the downside. There are two rooms of the seven that advertise that they have king size beds. That is partially true. They have king size mattresses and bed springs sitting on top queen size frames. There is a hill in the middle of the bed which pushes you to the edge where because of the slope near the edge, you slide off faster. It makes for a BAD night of sleep. Having king beds on queen frames is just wrong and bad for people like us who paid for a king bed. The leather couch in the Garden Suite is so worn out, the cushions barely support their own weight. One can sink fast when sitting and getting up can require effort. The rear of the property has a nice wooden deck, but the amount of rust, dirt, mold and mildew on the furniture makes it undesirable. French doors from the Garden Suite open out to that area, but it is not an advantage with the outdoor furniture in such sad shape. The photos on the website must have been taken at a much earlier time in the history of the place. It shows a beautifully painted carousel next to the house. What is there now is faded and dirty - kind of scary. The property needs a paint job and there are things that just detract from the property like a rusting tricycle on the deck. The house is full of antiques. That is a nice idea, but taken to the point that the entire house is cluttered with old knicknacks and strange items from the past, does not make it a better place to stay, just a cluttered place to stay. People need places to put their travel belongings when they are travelling. We used the floor and had to move lots of pillows and other clutter to find space above that. This establishment does not earn the cost of the room. You would be better served staying at the Shenandoah Inn (motel), one of the winery B&B or staying in Drytown or Amador City. Having a 5 star review from a person 2 miles away in Fiddletown smells of pimping fake reviews. Yelp only works when reviewers actually stay at a place rather than be buds with the owner.

All I knew is they were pet-friendly, affordable and in a convenient location. When we arrived, it was better than I had expected. The grounds are beautifully maintained. There are several outside spaces to relax or have a bite with your group, and each room comes with its own front patio area with a private bench. There is also a volleyball net, horseshoe pit, grill, spit and plenty of lawn to enjoy other activities. There is also a creek at the back of the complex, which unfortunately dries up this time of year but I can imagine is very relaxing when flowing. Our room came with a queen bed, table and 2 chairs, refrigerator, air conditioning, cable tv, private shower and bathroom, pantry, and plenty of drawers and shelves. The motel is clearly on the older side and has plenty of character and charm, but it also is a bit worn. As it was very clean, I wasn't bothered by the "antique" look. There was one small issue. Bugs. As it was about 100 degrees outside, there were several small bugs sneaking in the air conditioner. Again, we weren't really bothered by this as the bugs didn't bother us and we woke up the next day bite free. It must be noted that the owners of the Motel (which should change the sign on the side of the road to "Inn") were incredibly friendly, helpful and accommodating. We had a small issue with our dog and the curtains, and they were more than understanding and appreciated the fact we alerted them and offered to pay for the damage. We were looking for a safe and fun place for a family reunion. Somewhere I could actually bring all of our extended family.. (even those country ones you can't be seen in public with, lol) Found this amazing hotel online and can't say enough great things about it. Karl, our host disappeared after showing us all the amenities. He lives nearby and showed up swiftly when I had trouble lighting a fire in the living room. We had 6 kids that had their own suite area away from the adults. Thankfully there was wifi internet for them when they tired of playing outside. We had such a stellar time there at the historical wild west Avery hotel with no one looking over our shoulders ;) The big trees nearby were awesome too. My skiing fam hit the mountains not far away. Plus an Italian restaurant, a live entertainment bar, and cute lil coffee shop all in walking distance. The town of Murphy's was super cool also. I'm guessing they book up fast with the weddings and stuff. Don't hesitate!

We were…read morelucky to have found this place by just pure searching for unique wedding venues and when we saw this place... we knew it was special. This venue has beautiful charm and good bones. It just feels like you stepped back in time and we really enjoyed that. Carl and all the staff connected with Avery Hotel have been nothing but accommodating to us. They were always willing to listen to any questions we had and were always checking in along the way. The freedom of the venue really pulls you in because it offered that blank canvas of possibilities and that is what we wanted because I love a challenge and had a very clear image of how I wanted my wedding to look like. They have extra decorations for you to use, endless linens, all shapes/sizes of plates, cups and bowls. You do need to clean up after yourself but that's the easy part. Now Carl, deserving of his own paragraph... he really takes care of you and checks up on you especially when it is week of. He was kind enough to let us come in earlier on check in day and greeted us as we pulled up ready to help in any way we needed. He gave us a quick tour and stepped away to let us have our special private weekend! We did have to text him a few times and was always quick to respond. Again, thank you Carl and staff for a beautiful and memorable venue.
