I have gone to Uptown Bikes twice in the last year. The Uptown Bikes staff is always super friendly, and they always do their best to get the work you need done as fast as possible. Both times, they were able to have my bike done that day. As someone who commutes by bike, this is really important to me. They also do a great job of explaining what needs to be done and what your options are. After their work, I felt like I was riding a brand new bike. I'm an avid urban biker and travel just about everywhere on my bike, however I don't allow myself to get caught up in all that pretentious BS that a lot of bikers (not all) have. Super place for a quick tune up or equipment replacement. They are so reasonably priced and the service is quick as long as you don't come by at the peak of the season. They always seem to throw in some service without charge just to make my life as a cyclist that much easier. read more

Extremely helpful, quick, and reasonably priced. I went in for a basic tune-up, questions about safe winter biking, and busy day ahead of me. I left with my questions answered, money still in my pocket, and all my errands done in the short time between dropping off my bike and picking it up. Plus you can stop by anytime to pump your tires. I usually take my business to Uptown Bikes, even though I live closer to a competing shop (which I admit I went to one Wednesday when Uptown was closed). I've been in several times over the past few years and have never been made to feel like an idiot for having really basic questions or really basic problems. The services they provide are affordable and the employees are nice. In fact, I was compelled to write this review today after I went in and the dude I spoke to fixed my jacked-up saddle for free, because he was afraid the fix might not work (it did!). I went here once last year for a tire replacement and a new seat on my hybrid after someone stole one of my tires, I went here today after I needed my tires filled with air, and I will continue to go to them in the future. They are super sweet, patient, and knowledgeable. I know next to nothing about bike care as I'm new to really riding my bike (not like around the block as a kid) and commuting daily to work downtown and back. I'm glad they are in the area and am really happy I have them to help when my bike gets screwed up or I need a tune-up. read more

This is most unpretentious bike shop I have been to. Since my bicycle is my only mode of transportation, I take really good care of it and so did they. They were very quick and friendly. I really recommend them for anybody: they will not talk over your head and are extremely realistic when it come to bikes. They won't let you leave with a $3k road by if your just a weekend rider. Seems like a good spot. I just stopped in with a friend who was looking to pick up a single speed as a winter bike. They didn't have a ton of accessories and what they did have did't appeal to me. Not that they don't stock what you might need in a pinch. Decent, but small stock of bikes for sale. I'm a Raleigh fan, so I had no complaints with what they had out on the floor. And the prices were more than fair. Though, this place looks like it makes a fair amount off of it's trade from repairs. Can't say anything about that since I didn't need that service. I have a LBS that is close to me and does me right, but in a pinch I might give them a shot. Definitely will stop in again if I'm in need and in the neighborhood. read more

My boyfriend and I bike year-round and are as broke as everyone else these days, and we love Urban Bikes. I go there for every bike-related need, and have had dozens of interactions with the staff. They are great, all the way around - they never try to sell me stuff I don't need and always help me get what I need and spend as little as possible. After wasting a lot of time and money at On the Route bike shop in Lincoln Square, I decided to take my flat to Uptown Bikes after a friend recommended them. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes with a fixed flat and some new cork ribbon for a lot less than the other guys would have charged. They helped me out at Bike the Drive and did an awesome job. I also had to get a tire repaired recently and they did that quickly, and then also offered to help me with my water bottle holder that was loose. Overall, awesome staff who go out of their way to be helpful. read more

Moved to the neighborhood a few months ago. Brought my bike out today for the first time this season. Chain was rusty after the winter, shifting was wonky. So I hadn't ridden a bike in 15 years. And then a friend gave me her old bike, which was incredibly fun to ride, but also sort of terrifying (see above). Uptown Bikes gets 5 stars for treating this dorky, novice bike rider with kindness, intelligence and respect. The staff were willing to fix things rather than suggest expensive replacements. First time I went to uptown I was helped by a really nice tall guy who made me want to come back and check it out again. I would have bought my bike from them but they didn't have the model I was looking for at the time. I ended up getting my bike from somewhere else who I will never go back to again, especially after this last time going to uptown. I was helped by Nora who was so friendly and helpful, they needed to order a new back wheel from california which arrived tue (i brought the bike in late on friday) and walked out of there late tue with my bike all fixed up and only paid 5 bucks! Uptown Bikes was so helpful when I needed to replace a stolen tire. They gave me a range of pricing options over the phone, and left the decision to me. The bike was ready to go in hours after I dropped it off. When I picked it up they took the initiative, as a courtesy, to fix my baskets and put extra protection on the quick release tire. Relaxed and crunchy establishment. I crashed my bike, came in five minutes before closing hoping for nothing more than to drop my bike and come back another day. They fixed me up on the spot and sent me on my way. They went out of their way to use used parts where possible, which I did not expect. The whole repair was under ten bucks. Uptown is a great place to buy a bike. The store specializes in Raleighs as well as a few other moderately priced brands. I wound up buying the Raleigh Roadster from Pete, a super-helpful guy who is easily identified by the fairly large objects in his earlobes-I can't call them earrings because the lobes actually wrap around them. Anyway, Pete showed endless amounts of patience and took the time to make sure the bike fit as well as explain how the tire inflator works with "Presta" valves. This was an excellent experience and I highly recommend them for buying or repairing a bike. read more
