Uptown bikes is an island of integrity in a sea full of bike shops that try to upsell and nickel and dime you as much as possible. Service is fast and friendly, prices are reasonable, and they're more than happy to answer my sometimes dumb questions. I wish they had longer hours and it's a small shop so sometimes they might not have everything you need, but those are minor gripes. This is the best bike shop I've been to in the city. read more

I bought my first bike from Uptown Bikes with the help of Pete who was patient to answer all of my questions, very knowledgeable, and so kind. I'm new to commuter biking so Pete filled me in on the basics with no judgement what so ever. I must say that Maria and Peter were super helpful. As probably the most indecisive customer that has ever come to the store, they help me to select and try out (including seat/handle adjustments) for three different bikes. I actually had placed a bike on hold yesterday, but after a few second thoughts, I called to cancel it. By far my favorite bike shop in the city! Now that i've moved out of Uptown I don't know what I'm going to do! Everyone who works at Uptown Bikes is super friendly and super knowledgable. During the 7 years I lived down the street from them, they helped me out on so many occasions! Took my bike out for the first time this year and headed down to Uptown Bikes to buy one of those gel cushions to try to make my bike seat more comfortable. Even though the shop was full of people, I was helped right away by Maria, who helped me find a gel pad and then made several other suggestions that might help, including adjusting my seat. They are the most knowledgeable, friendly, and customer-centered people around. Case in point. I just brought in my somewhat used, thick-wheeled mountain bike thinking it was time to trade up for a sleek, aluminum road bike for my commute. that could have been $600 easy. Well, they looked over my bike, told me that I should really just trade out the tires for more appropriate ones, and see if that works. I recently bought a used bike and went in to get an estimate of what needs to be done. Like most other people said, they were super friendly and efficient about checking over my bike. I was told a tune-up was needed and the bike had a broken spoke. The estimate was $75 for the tune-up and $31 to fix the broken spoke (including $1 material). When I asked about the reason it cost $30 to fix the spoke since truing the (rear) wheel was included in the tune-up, I was told 'it is complicated'. I would really like them to fix my bike since so many people seem to like their service, however, I wasn't sure the estimate was reasonable so I left. In the end, I found another place that charged $55 for the tune-up and $5 to fix the spoke since 'they were doing the tune-up already'. I will pick up my bike tomorrow and see if I can tell the $46 price difference. read more

For $76 I have 2 new tires, tubes, back break pads, and a break tune up. It was the best deal out there after I called around to various bike shops. And it was all done and ready to ride after an hour and a half of waiting at the Boarders books across the street. Good customer service as well. read more

I'm a huge fan of Uptown Bikes. The prices are fair, the staff is friendly and helpful, and they do quality work! I came in to buy a lock and mentioned that I couldn't lower my seat. They sold me a lock, put on the holster, lowered the seat, oiled the chain, and checked the brakes for a little over $40 (basically the cost of the lock). There's none of the pretentious anxiety you can get at other bike shops. It's exactly what a bike shop should be. read more

I LOVE Uptown Bikes. They have the best customer service in the world. They totally hooked me up and tuned my bike up so it was safe for me to do a 200-mile bike ride, plus when I came in months later, they totally asked me how it went and remembered. I got a flat tire and they let me borrow a bike to run home and get my bike key so it could get fixed quicker. They are so kind and knowledgeable and very reasonably priced. I understand you're a business but really????!!!!!! My seat came loose in Uptown yesterday. I stopped in and asked if I could use an allen wrench, literally a quarter of a turn would have done it. Your solution was I had to buy a wrench or you had to do it for me with a minium shop charge. I don't mind throwing a couple bucks your way but a minium shop charge for a quarter of a turn????!!!!!! Instead you let someone bike 40 blocks with a broken seat. That is insane! I have never come across a bike shop like this. I support bike shops that support the biking community. You do not! Have had my bike serviced here multiple times and we purchased our son's bike here when he was 3. Service has always been great and reasonably priced. Yesterday went in to drop off my bike for annual servicing - guys told me they'd check it out while i was there, refill tires and oil chains for $5 and see if it needed any more work. I was coming in to drop it off so had no cash - they said no problem, checked out the bike and told me all was good no need for service at this time. I acquired an 1960's-70's schwin bike that i was sure was going to cost hundreds of dollar to restore to working order. twice i was there with my bike and they either did something small for free, or they reused existing parts to keep cost down. my vintage cycle is now up and running like a beast for under $90. and keep in mind, i don't think anyone tended to this bike in the last 30 years... hands down this is the place to go! the treat you and your bike with respect! read more

I love this place. I've come in strictly for repairs and I'm always so happy with the work they do. Everyone I've spoken to has been very nice and always takes the time to explain my options. If you tell them you're working in a certain price range they're very understanding and try to get as close as possible to what you want done within your budget. Great place to go for repairs and very fair prices. If you live on the north side, definitely come here for work on your bike. They get pretty busy in summer months and weekends, but be patient with them because it is absolutely worth the short wait you may have when you come in. You will always get plenty of one on one time with a mechanic and never feel like you are being rushed.Anytime I pick my bike up from here after it's been worked on it rides better than ever! I'm pretty bummed out about uptown bikes , the people were nice but I brought in a bike that needed some work, I found it in my parents barn. The tires had dry rot and it needed a new chain and some cleaning as well as new rims. They said it would cost 150 and it would take about a month because it was there busy season. I was fine with all of that. When I went to pick it up the bike was still very dirty, it still had cob webs on it, it had two new tires but not new rims and the padding on the handle bars was still old and crumbling. I left with it thinking it was just dirty and maybe i just didn't know what I was talking about. But after riding it for a few weeks I knew something wasn't right and I realized that my rims were bent because they were so old. Over all I not impressed, I feel like you bay 150 bucks they should put a little bit more work into it. Now i have to pay someone else more money to put new rims on it. After i have already cleaned it up. Overall I'm not happy with the job they did which sucks cause I have heard good things about uptown, that's why I went there in the firsts place. my brakes were recently stolen off my bike (while it was locked in the basement of my building!)...i live just a couple blocks from this place, so i figured it'd be the easiest place to go & i'm SO HAPPY i went there. not only were they very sympathetic to my predicament, but they squeezed me in right away and were done in less than 90 minutes. and the labor/parts were way less than i expected them to be (this was my first bike repair)! and, because they're awesome, they checked everything else, tightened everything up, and refilled my tires while my bike was there just to be nice! i will DEFINITELY be going back. read more

I am a self-confessed novice cyclist that knows absolutely nothing about bikes or cycling. I took in an old Columbia Charger road bike that resided in my mom's basement since the 80s to see if it was worth fixing up for me to use. I walked in and was immediately greeted kindly by a few members of the staff. Nora checked out my bike and talked to me about my needs and what I was looking for. After talking to her for a bit, I decided that it was in my best interest to buy a new bike. I felt completely comfortable in this shop -- I did not feel that I was being pushed into buying anything that I didn't need and I was sold a bike in a price range that I was completely comfortable with. I needed a bike to use this week and knowing that, Nora offered to have a bike built for me that was not on the floor yet, which I thought was awesome. I came back at the end of the day, rode the bike down the street, got a full explanation of how to use the bike, and was also given a full tutorial on how to properly lock it up. I was given a busted old Schwinn 3-speed. I was all set to pay a couple of hundred bucks to have it fixed up to have something to ride until I could get the money together to spend eight or nine hundred more to get a brand new bike and kit. I went to Uptown Bikes based on their Yelp reviews. Not only did the staff spend three hours answering every newbie question I could come up with (I didn't spend a dollar my first time in, mind you), but when I came back with the busted bike they told me it was actually a very good bike and talked me out of spending hundreds buying another from them. Since then I've gone back to them every time I have a bike problem. By the third time I went in I was being greeted by name. The people there seem genuinely glad that I've chosen to share their joy of biking and are sincerely welcoming every time I go in. I have never been so pleased by the service and staff of any other place I've ever been. Hands down the best staff of any bicycle shop I have dealt with in this city from front to back. I have lived in Chicago since 1988 and have used and abused my bicycles as primary transportation winter and summer for most of my life. This knowledgeable team treats everyone who walks into the shop with equal respect regardless of the make, condition of their bicycle, or repairs needed. They are master diagnosticians, master improvisors, expert and precise in their work, empathetic to customer concerns, honest, charge reasonable prices for work done, responsive to phone inquiries, and each individual in the shop is just a downright decent person. My bicycles tend to be Dutch style commuter bikes and are seldom simple repairs yet this group never flinches at the challenges I bring them. I've been to many bicycle shops around the West and North sides and, though I ride at the very least 12 miles a day, have felt judged to be an amateur by the hipsters on the sales teams or repair staff who seem more concerned with selling me expensive products or services than assisting me with my unique cycling/lifestyle needs. You will not find this subversive snobbery at Uptown Bikes. The staff genuinely cares about the customer and works to address any bicycle related concern that comes their way.
