Chillin at the Broadway Saloon for a quick bite.

I've heard it called everything from a steakhouse to a dive bar but honestly it's too clean and well kept for dive bar status. I'd say more just a casual place to grab a decent steak and a cold brew - though all those old neon signs and the row of video poker games on the back wall do take it down a notch or two. But the place is otherwise legit, with a serious full length wooden bar as you walk in, mixing good and strong and cheap drinks and sporting a decent enough tap list. The food can be hit or miss, with everything from fried chicken tenders to burgers to salads --- and yes, steaks --- on offer. What I've had isn't exceptional but service is good, friendly and attentive, and the prices are decent. The whole place has a woody, old time Western feel and just a low key neighborhoody vibe. There are TVs and a big screen showing games too. Nothing to go out of your way for, but a solid place to hang your hat for an hour or two.

    Steak salad and broadway bowl.

Excellent service and food nice place not a dive by any account but great hangout, bartender very nice.

$35 bucks for aribeye that tasted like a piece of cheap meat. French dip sandwich also tasted cheaply made. We will not return.

My wife and I were looking for a local place to get a steak and landed at the Broadway Saloon. It was a Friday night and the place was slammed. It's a smallish space with moderate ceiling height and wood floors so between that and the full house it was LOUD. For some reason there was but one wait person but she was a real trooper - got the job done and maintained a sense of humor through it all. I both admired and appreciated that. My wife had prime rib that was a little too done. I opted for fish tacos and a bowl of chowder which was on the thick side. Our water was never refilled. The desert options were minimal and we passed. Overall, the food was respectable though nothing I'd go back for nor recommend. This seems more of a neighborhood watering hole than a restaurant and there's nothing wrong with that so long as one's expectations are on par and you have a preference to drink over eating. Again, props and kudos to the waitress that helped us and everyone else. That said, I am scoring Broadway Saloon 3 stars which might be a stretch.

Food was really good and quite a bit for what you pay for but the bartenders are rude and not welcoming at all.

For the past few months or possibly more, there is a server/closing-manager (male Caucasian, glasses, ponytail) who only reluctantly provides the HH menu. About two months ago, I asked when HH started, and he said in 7 minutes (i.e., it was 9:53pm). I asked how much I'd save on the beer I was contemplating if I waited for 7 minutes, and he said a dollar or two, so I told him I'd wait until then to place my order. It seemed like a pretty light day, yet he took a full 20+ minutes to come take our order -- it felt like he was punishing me. Last night, it was 10:10pm and I asked if there was a HH menu. He said "not yet." I thought he meant that they hadn't yet been published, but when I went to the bar to say hi to someone I know, I saw a HH menu already on the bar. I'd already ordered off the regular menu, and chose to not change to something on the HH hour just to avoid the conflict. I have no idea what is inspiring this behavior. Perhaps people who order off HH menus don't tip well? In any case, this new HH attitude has definitely dampened my enthusiasm for Fireside. Which is sad since it still has a great tap list and menu.

We got some drinks and started off with their Caesar salad and the fried polenta. The Caesar was good, but I wished we had more leaves for the price. The polenta fries were very tasty, not amaaaazing and super salty. They didn't need the blue cheese butter dip at all. For dinner we tried the smoked salmon squid ink pasta and the cioppino. The cioppino was alright, one perk was that the shellfish was already pulled out of the shell, and had a lot of small pieces of squid but I would have preferred bigger squid pieces. And more bread to go with it. The smoked salmon pasta was very rich and heavy. It was good but it too benefited from some bread to go with all that savory salty goodness. Service was also okay, nothing special. We to flag down staff to get more bread. Overall, not amazing, not terrible. Decarli fell short of my expectations. There are plenty of other amazing Italian places in Portland that would rather make the trip out for.

I recommend the asada for two, though honestly it's probably enough for three. It's a lot, but everything is delicious. Even if you aren't usually into sweet breads or morcilla, this is executed so perfectly that it's worth a shot. We ordered one of the daily specials, a beef tartare with arbol and peanut crunch, and were blown away. The best tartare I've ever had. For cocktails, we both had the ox blood and it surpassed expectations. Less sweet than we anticipated but that was a good thing. The beer list was small, but well curated and paired excellently with the meal.

On our first visit we had a reservation and were seated at a table. After ordering, patrons are served a complimentary leek soup in an espresso size cup. I wish it were on the menu because it is one of the best things I've ever tasted. The flavor is incredibly rich! We ordered the clam chowder, halibut, maple glazed carrots and tres leches cake. The clam chowder's presentation was nicely done but nothing special in taste. It came so highly recommended on Reddit and many other diners ordered it but neither my party nor I cared for it. The halibut was good but didn't stand out and the maple glazed carrots weren't to my taste. What completely won us over was the tres leches cake. It is one of the most delicious and most memorable desserts we've ever had. Every layer complemented the next perfectly creating an incredibly balanced dessert that wasn't overly sweet with different textures. We couldn't stop talking about it afterward. It was one of the reasons we decided to give the restaurant a second shot. After our meal I mentioned to our server that we weren't sure if we'd ordered the right dishes since we weren't thrilled with the food especially with how popular the restaurant is. He explained that it's primarily an Argentinian steakhouse and suggested returning to try the meat dishes. On our second visit we arrived at opening without a reservation. There was plenty of seating but since we didn't have a reservation we were seated at the bar. I didn't mind seated at the bar but the bar stools were extremely uncomfortable, almost torturous. Unfortunately, it was too hot to sit outside. Midway through dinner a machine, maybe a dishwasher, was turned on behind the bar. It was loud and the vibrations could be felt. This time we ordered the beet salad, cheese empanada, beef empanada, two filet mignons and the lamb shoulder. The beet salad was a disappointment. It consisted of large overly soft chunks of beets with what tasted like a basic grocery store salad dressing. For a restaurant of this caliber I expected more. Neither of us enjoyed the cheese empanada but we both liked the beef empanada. We also ordered two filet mignons cooked the same way. Both arrived more done than requested and one way more overcooked than the other. They were also on the salty side, though both were very tender. The lamb shoulder, which our server had already warned us about before we ordered, ended up being dry and tough. The chimichurri served alongside the savory dishes was also heavier on onions than I prefer. Overall, the service was excellent, and the complimentary leek soup and tres leches cake were truly outstanding. Unfortunately, despite two visits, the main dishes we ordered didn't live up to the restaurant's reputation for us.
