HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Experience at Brookdale Westlake Hills My family chose Brookdale Westlake Hills because they took excellent care of my grandfather six years ago. Sadly, the quality of care has gone downhill DRAMATICALLY. The staff now are unprofessional, inattentive, and clearly unhappy in their roles. Every time I've visited -- and after hours of being there, observing staff behavior firsthand -- I've consistently seen them sitting on their phones instead of caring for residents. This is not just a one-time occurrence; it is a pattern that reflects neglect and lack of interest in their responsibilities. When they do interact with residents, it's often with a bad attitude, as though the residents are inconveniencing them. Family members and I have repeatedly asked for updates on our loved one, particularly from NURSE EVAN, and each time we were treated as if we were a nuisance. EVAN often responded with a dismissive tone, gave vague or minimal information, and acted visibly annoyed that we were even asking. At times, it felt like pulling teeth to get even the most basic updates about our loved one's condition -- which is unacceptable when someone's health and dignity are at stake. This is heartbreaking to witness, especially when entrusting them with the care of someone you love. It is shocking and disappointing to see this level of neglect and indifference in a place that is supposed to provide care and compassion. If you value your loved one's dignity and well-being, DO NOT send them here. They are NOT in good hands. read more

I have mixed feelings about this facility. On one hand, the staff seems really nice. My mother said the food was good. And in Skilled Nursing, there seemed to be a stream of people in and out but we as family, had to be there there 8 am - 8 pm once she was unresponsive because unless we asked for help with hygiene tasks or ensuring meds were given, we didn't see them done without being present. Her room seemed to be reasonably clean. And we added Hospice to her care team so that fills in some gaps that don't seem included in Skilled Nursing. Downsides are things like Call Buttons not working. Forced movements during PT that cause injuries, even when my mother objected. The swelling in her ankles made her ankles hit equipment and her leg became raw and inflamed to the degree a blanket on her skin was painful. Staff not being sure what time medications were administered. (we asked about a dose and although they said they gave it, no one could say when or give a time. And a family member was visiting ( that family member was ME) and no one came in while I was there so was she given meds or not? We were a bit concerned because not even a time could be confirmed through a chart. Worrisome. No one there (including me!) knows how to put in hearing aids!! I googled this process to learn how to insert them because my mother was frantic without them and I had zero experience with them. She (my mother) was bleeding from her foot, with blood pooling on the floor. No one noticed so I had to summon someone to bandage her up. My mother chose this facility and it was recommended by her doctors. She was lucid, cognitive and very involved her decisions when she arrived. This was her choice and a place she felt was the best fit for her (home or family living was no longer an option. The family really felt obligated to respect her wishes since she was fully capable of calling the shots.) She did pass away 22 days later. Maybe my expectations were too high. Or maybe I am just paralyzed by grief. I will say we were fortunate that we had 3 family members that took 4 hour shifts to be there for the 12 hours of visiting hours every single day. I can't imagine how things would have gone without our being there if she had lived long enough that we couldn't we there 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. Regardless of where my head is (grief stricken which is why I didn't review while she was still alive). I am still unsure on how I feel about the SNF side of Brookdale. Many things are in poor repair. Paint, scuffed walls, cracks in walls and doors, light and call buttons not working. My mother was self pay and for a shared room and 9300.00 a month, I thought ... I don't know... I guess I thought it should be cleaner and better maintained. Final note: parking was kind of a nightmare on weekends. Be prepared to park, then walk quite a distance to the entrance. I have a handicap placard but so does almost everyone visiting. So... OK if your loved one is lucid. Ok if you can be there long days and keep an eye on things we assumed they did in Skilled Nursing. The broken lights didn't affect care I guess but as a troubled family, we kind of expected better care (like not having to point out pools of blood or the fact she got bedsores in only 3 weeks and could they please reposition her more often? Then we had to ask them to do these things. It's a tough field to work in. Staff is understaffed and probably underpaid. I do know if I personally need this kind of care, with my children out of state, I would not want to come here. read more

Uneven. It has been over a year since my mother passed. She had two years here. They were often wonderful and even exceptional at times. It's hard to make aging a happy time in life, especially during COVID and this group really got it right more than half the time. Many staff members are consistently energetic, like Wendy and Richie, and both Karen M and Karen P. Executive Directors changed from a sincere listener to a cold manager; mom felt the abrupt change. There was strangely very little supportive messaging or clear guidance when mom passed and we needed to know timing and procedures. It left us with a feeling of coldness and insincerity that did not represent most of mom's time there. read more

I experienced the worst four weeks of my life here. I was transferred from Dell, bed bound, put in a room with a difficult roommate. No welcome from staff, no explanation of what the schedule would be, what services would be provided. After two days, contracted Covid, sent back to Dell. Returned after 10 day quarantine to private room. Still no explanation of services to expect, food atrocious when/if delivered. Never what ordered. Physical therapy sporadic. Nursing care only minimal. Actually had the aide put the call button out of reach so I wouldn't bother them. Charged over$ 1000 for extra days care not informed would happen. Horrible. Only started healing after returning home. Would never recommend to anyone. read more

Nursing home respote care. The quality was very bad. He called for help & no one came. For 2500.+ for 1 week promissing there would be no hidden bills or charges....Here what they billed for: 1. washcloths 2. kleenex 3. urnial 4. All his medications, which they said there would be not more bills after the 2500. and would be included . 5. His shared room was dirty & old . 6. The worst : A . Kept billing for the medication I didn't owe B.Sent bill over for collections C. Then tryed to have CVS bill to me! Very sneaky The room was so old + the bed was old. I stayed for 3 weeks after hip surgery. They were understaffed and they served dinner with at least 40 people. I am 63 and I felt like the youngest person there. I liked how they treated the residents. They offer crafts, games, movies and games. The staff make a point to get folks out of bed and into their wheel chairs for activities and they will also leave you alone if you want to sleep in. The quality of care was top notch the food choices were excellent if you didn't like something they have other menus to choose from. Staff were professional and helpful. I was capable of showering alone when I wanted to shower. They watched and stayed near the first time and then I had my privacy she sat outside the door. They have a scheduled for showering but I was often in too much pain during those times so they let me go after hours. As long as they had 2 people in the hall. read more

My mother started in independent living and was transferred to assisted living after a month in skilled nursing. While in skillled nursing the staff did not dress her or do her laundry. When she was in assisted living her needs were not met. She fell repeatedly trying to take herself to the bathroom since her call light was not answered. The staff did not open her blinds, turn on her lights or help her to have the tv on or make phone calls. She was ignored and over medicated even when told repeatedly to stop by her and her family. This was a horrible experience! I wish I had never had my mother in this facility. The care she received was criminal. read more

Absolutely horrid! I worked there back in the dish room under Megan and Kristi and it was absolutely disgusting. As I was being trained, I saw people sticking their hands in food to eat it, other dishwasher employees were just scraping food off with their hands or towels if a pot still came out dirty. They were using the soup bowls to fill with water and take medicine, then they just rinsed it out and put it back in the clean section. Roaches were all over the place. Management didn't care and if they had a bad day, they would yell at us as if we were children. I would never send a loved one there; much less work! They couldn't keep their dining room or kitchen staffed because people were just fed up with the environment, so everyone was cutting corners to get the job done faster. The HR ladies were also very rude and were rushing me through computer training, implying that I was smart because I was white, and they were both white. One was named Jackie, but for the life of me I cannot remember the other lady. All in all, worst place I have ever been in. Don't put loved ones here! read more

My sister was here for three weeks, she received physical therapy due to and extended hospital stay, they were pretty patient with her, she was going through some pretty rough times,and had just received some not great news concerning her overall health.so she was easily agitated and very depressed during her stay, they brought in a psychologist to visit with her which i thought was pretty amazing, it made a huge difference in how well she coped with things moving forward, got her from being bed rid to walking again within that three week period. I overall was pleased with the staff. There were a couple of small instances with one person on staff, that was handled quickly once it was brought to the supervisors attention. I was pleased at the positive outcome we experienced. read more

The communication with management and assistant management is awful. They will incorrectly state they called back or were out- standard excuse. I do not have missed calls or VM. As much money this place charges I expect better communication. Personalized living is getting better but that has been a long work in progress. I am referring to Independent Living. Please do not admit your loved one to this facility (Skilled Nursing), unless you or someone else can be with your loved one 24/7. I said all I had to say for one month to every employee I could, as did outside doctors for my loved one. No one listens, and you've got to make sure things are done correctly in person. It took my loved one's doctors (three of them) up to four days to reach medical staff regarding pertinent medications that my loved one had to be given immediately or stopped immediately. It makes me physically & emotionally ill reliving the nightmare of that place. I still have all correspondence from my emails, calls and texts with their staff regarding my loved one. And all of that correspondence did go to the "appropriate staff" during my loved one's stay. There ARE some wonderful medical staff that do work there, and you can really tell they care about the "residents." I did make sure those people were thanked for going above and beyond their call of duty. Others just whine and complain about how short staffed they are, etc... They actually lost food for my loved one, kept him in dirty, poopy diapers, were rude, and told me I complained too much when I had serious concerns. I did not express many other concerns, because my loved one feared retaliation from staff. I do NOT want a reply from this facility. read more

My mom spent a month at Brookdale Westlake Hills after two weeks in a medical facility and it was such a difficult transition. They didn't have her medicine when she arrived and then just passed it off and said they would work to start it the next day. She was called a liar by a staff member, and it was always our fault when the right person didn't get a message about a medical appointment or something - even though we had told five others who said they would pass the message along and the right person wasn't on duty when I was there. The bright spots were some of the caregivers and other staff members and the therapy she received (OT, PT, speech). Other than that, it was the roughest stay that my mom has ever had in a facility like this, and there were many nights where I stayed past visiting hours just to make sure she felt calm and safe enough to sleep. If she has to go back to skilled nursing, we will definitely find another facility. read more

I entered this facility as a rehab patient from surgery. The facility needs a physical overhaul as the rooms have old, dirty carpets and furniture. At over $300/day, I think even change money could make a difference. All types of needs should not be placed on the same floor. For example, I was rehab. The next two rooms over on one side were hospice. I was there when one person died. I didn't need more sorrow as I was struggling with my surgical recovery. On the other side was a patient with special needs. Across the hall were long-term older patients who needed full-time care. I felt isolated and sometimes had to wait for help because these other patients were so desperate. That was okay but if I had been in a "rehab" section, I would have been better served. However, except for the nurse who said she was a doctor and the doctor who did not show until the second to the last day, THE STAFF WAS THE BEST ANYONE COULD ASK. THIS INCLUDES NURSES, AIDES, DINING PERSONNEL AND ADMINISTRATION, COOKS, ACTIVITIES AND TRAINING STAFF. They really deserved a higher class facility and probably higher pay. It would be an honor to have them work anywhere. They cared, they were educated and esperienced and all were professional. 5 STARS FOR THE STAFF. read more

They act like they care, but do not be fooled. It is all about money. They gave incorrect dosage of medication, if given at all. Sometimes the help would not come. My mother suffered. The COVID restrictions were completely unfair. If they liked you, then you received special privilege's. A maid got COVID and told everyone after she cleaned the entire floor (about 50 rooms). They only quarantined 2 residents on that floor. Strange?? read more

Terrible, absolutely terrible. My grandpa went in there to get stronger and come home and this staff literally left him in his room to deteriorate. When he got home and got him evaluated by a different doctor, there were so many alarming health conditions that arose and we never were informed of any of it nor was he treated for any of it while he was there. We had to call in hospice. Do not put your loved one here, they will not be taken care of. My favorite was when we walked in and he wasn't on his oxygen and when we asked the aide her response was "I don't know." He was without oxygen for over 2 hours. read more

This review is for Skilled nursing at Brookdale Westlake Hills. Mom was taken by ambulance from BHW Assisted Living where she is a resident, to the hospital for what turned out to be a week long hospital stay. (Kudos to the AL staff for spotting her need for hospital treatment so quickly.) She was admitted back to BWH, this time to Skilled Nursing to recuperate, on a Saturday (not the best time to be admitted to a rehab facility). Andrew and Blessing could not have been more helpful in getting her situated. She was there almost 3 weeks and the whole staff was wonderful, including Bert, the director, who was responsive to my concerns and questions, as well as mom's. Highly recommend. read more

The community is easily accessible with its location being right off Mopac and just south of downtown; yet, it still feels secluded with all of the beautiful managed and natural landscaping. The residents maintain a welcoming vibe to all. Those who have lived here for the majority of the community's twenty years make fast friends with their neighbors who just moved in. You may find slightly newer places in Austin but the care , concern and vibrancy of this community is unparalleled . If you are looking for a personalized approach to retirement living you have to put this Brookdale first on your list . This review is specifically for the skilled nursing section of this facility only. Do not put a loved one here. One star is not a low enough rating. While other Brookdale skilled nursing facilities in town may be good to serviceable, this facility fails any standard of good patient care. An infection my already weakened loved one got at this facility, which was not treated correctly despite my insistent requests to on-duty staff and then eventually to supervisors, contributed to her decline and death, two days after we removed her from this facility. The on-file request for a diabetes-specific diet was routinely ignored which required our family to bring food every day that my loved one could actually eat, "caregivers" were bored and infrequent, and an arcane medicine delivery system resulted in continued excuses for why even simple medication was not available for the patient. After my first insistent request to nursing staff for medication for a visible and oozing infection (because no medical person on their staff had proactively prescribed anything), three days elapsed. I was told by on-duty staff that they were "waiting for the pharmacy to deliver the medicine." When the medicine arrived three days later, it was the wrong prescription. Four more days passed before the correct prescription was delivered. By this time, however, the infection was systemic and no ointment would have helped. Two days later, at another facility, my unresponsive loved one died. Documented? Yes. Further action? Under consideration. As with all caregiving institutions, not every person we encountered was uninterested/unskilled in providing good patient care. There were definitely some gone ones in the bunch, but it was a crapshoot as to who would show up when. The overall quality of care was not consistent, which reflects poor management and supervision practices, and was definitely not good enough to be recommended. When we were at the point of considering moving my loved one from a hospital to this facility, the social worker pulled me out into the hall and said that she had received several recent complaints about the quality of medical care here. I was completely startled by this news, and said that our family were native Austinites and were familiar with the historically good reputation of this facility. She smiled and said she just wanted to be sure that I had the most recent information regarding the quality of health care practiced here today. I should have listened. At one point, this may have been one of this city's best rehab/skilled nursing facilities. It is no longer. Believe the social worker. Be advised, and seek care elsewhere. read more

Brookdale Westlake Hills is an assisted living facility. But my hospital sent me there for rehabilitation following surgery for some injuries. What an enormously good decision that was! Right away, Brookdale's top management made a very fair and generous decision for me in an issue concerning details of my transfer. I passed quickly into the care of their delightful nursing staff. The nurses worked me every day with extreme competence and a feeling of family-like helpfulness and warmth. I soon realized that when my rehab was over and I finally went home, I would miss each one of those nurses as a new close friend. Brookdale's welcoming and beautiful property is in a comfy, tree-lined neighborhood in north central Austin. But you needn't take my word for anything you see in this glowing review. I recently left the Skilled Nursing Unit at Brookdale Westlake Hills after several weeks of rehab for a broken hip/partial hip replacement. The entire staff--administrators, therapists, nurses, and aides--was wonderful. Everyone was professional, knowledgeable, courteous, and caring. As for the facility, it was clean and well maintained. My room was of ample size and comfortable, with the exceptions of the bed being too short (I'm 6'3") and the pillows were not the most comfortable (recommend that you bring your own). Also, the food was not the greatest. Portions were small, and the food was very bland. The first problem is readily solved by requesting double portions, and the latter by bringing your own spices. The problems I encountered were minor, and my overall experience was very good. I would definitely return to Brookdale should the need arise, and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family. read more

I received a letter from the son of a former resident and with his permission I am sharing his kind words. I wish to express my family's gratitude to your Westlake Hills skilled nursing staff for the professional manner in the way they cared for and comforted my father. The nurses, the aides, the kitchen staff, admin and housekeeping brought dignity and a large measure of contentment during his last days. The E hall 2nd floor personnel were the best I have ever seen-positive, compassionate and respectful. Dad was in good hands. Westlake Hills succeeds because it cheerfully and efficiently functions as a team. In short, I had a positive experience with the entire staff during my month as a visitor, hence this letter in grateful acknowledgment of their special efforts. read more

My Mom has been to skilled nursing three times in the last few years. I was told it was one of the bests. Each visit something really upsetting happened, but we kept going back because we had been told that this was much better than the others. Several weeks ago my Mom was there and recovering after a fewe days, but over the weekend she was must have had a stroke and no one noticed. I missed one day of checking on her and came back to see her in huge decline. She was laying in her own filth and I asked someone to clean her, they took her to the bathroom and brought her back - she had excriment all over her hands. That's when I realized she wasn't just weak but had an altertered mental state. I had her taken to the hospital where they found in the exam room she hadn't been cleaned up at all. She'd had a stroke while there and a urinary track infection from their lack of care. Don't be fooled that this is a nice place because it is in Westlake - it's a dangerious place. read more

My parents have been well-served in their independent-living apartment over the past 5 years. The apartment is very nice and, like the common areas, well-maintained. The dining room is a comfortable place to eat and the food is very good. Transportation is comprehensive and ferries my folks to all sorts of appointments and social engagements. Am not as much of a fan of the skilled nursing care wing, where both of my parents have rehabbed after hospital stays. Staff is sometimes hard to communicate with and the rules are very confusing (mostly federal and insurance-related rules, not the facility's rules). Administrative staff should do a better job of making sure family members understand what the nursing staff can and can't accomplish. That said, it was VERY nice to have both kinds of facilities under one roof so that my mom could visit my dad while he was rehabbing, and vice versa. Few communities have this range, and it's one reason my parents chose the Westlake Hills location. read more

My mom had knee replacement surgery after two shoulder surgeries and really needed to be in a skilled nursing facility where a physical therapist could work with her a couple of times a day and where she could get help with bathing, getting on and off of her knee bending apparatus, preparing meals, and refilling her ice pack therapy every few hours. Unfortunately, the facility is NOT equipped with "skilled nurses" who follow doctor's orders or even read the patients'/clients'/residents' charts. Tonight, after waiting a couple of hours for a wound dressing change, the nurse came in, smacking gum, with a Dixie cup full of gauze to replace mom's bandage. Seriously unsanitary and unsafe nursing practices. The place is also filthy. The toilet has old urine encrusting the rear pipe behind the seat and gnarly black mold around the seat bolts. The area under the soap dispenser is coated in soap slime. The carpet has obviously not been vacuumed recently and definitely needs to be shampooed. The whole place is depressing, dingy, and uninviting. I cry every time I enter the place- so disappointed and remorseful for thinking that this would've been a better option for my mom than for her to rely on her neighbor and me to help. I was so wrong. We're busting her out of the place 8 days early. We cannot stand it. I feel so sorry for the "permanent" residents of this facility. What a sad place to go to die. read more

This wonderful Indepemdent Living facility has given my mother quality of life she did not have in her condo. The programs provide variety and there is always something to do. But most important is the quality of people that live there. Everyone is friendly including the staff. The building and grounds is always clean. The nurses and attendants are great. The administration lacks at compassion and preparation. My family was admitted about the second week of June and I was told she had 100 days to stay before medicare would stop paying. Yesterday was July 23,2013 and I and my sister received a call stating my Mom would have to leave due medicare would not no longer fund her because she did not meet the requirements for therapy.Her doctor advise was not to release her at this time and The Summit forced her to leave. If you choose for your loved one to stay here I would recommend you get everything in writing. The was no dignity in the way The Summit treated my Mom. read more

Yikes - this place gives me nightmares....to think I might end up in a place like it someday is downright chilling! The night staff is rude, cruel and completely negligent - one night nurse actually told my Mother that she "Should learn to suck it up and not be so needy". Not that it should matter, but she was recently paralyzed from the waist down with limited use of her hands and was just starting her coping journey. We had to spend every evening and weekends with her just to make sure that we felt like she was getting some care and tlc. On top of their general lack of patient care and compassion - I could tell that she was getting worse and kept mentioning this (silly me....I thought they had some medical training/obligation) with the standard response being "She is fine". After finally getting her into her neurologist, we come to find out that she is in a full relapse with pneumonia and a raging bladder infection. He had her transported directly from his office to IMC at Seton. I hate that we learned such an important lesson about trusting your instincts at the expense of two horrible weeks for my poor Mom. Bottom line - DO not go here or send a loved one here unless you are into the masochism thing! read more

Our experience with Brookdale retirement corporation (The Summit) was very poor. They require a 2 month notice to move out. This even after showing 2 letters from doctors that my parents needed more care immediately & The Summit could not provide. We moved them anyway because of their declining health (Dad died 5 months later). Buyer beware of the fine print when signing a contract. read more

Though my husband and I have been residents at The Summit only four months, we want to add our comments to what we have found to be true. The first, and most noticeable, impression we and our family have received is the unfailing warmth, courtesy, respect and abounding helpfulness we have received from all who are associated in any way with this organization. As with any place outside of Heaven, there will be problems that arise, but though not many, and often of not great importance, they have been swiftly and graciously corrected. It has been simply a matter of notification and There! It's fixed! We expect any place offering residents meals, activities, transportation, etc., to be very careful to provide the best that is available. That has been true and more than true. As our friends and family join us for meals in the Dining Room, for instance, they are quite impressed by the food. Our apartment is spacious for two people who have "downsized" and the birds at the feeders on our balcony provide constant entertainment. One last note. At The Summit, Independent Living is just that. We are in our own leased apartment, living our independent lives in a comfortable style, with friends and associates all around us. (We are extremely happy to include our dog, Katy, a boxer-terrier mix, as one of the residents here.) read more

The Brookdale at Westlake Skilled Nursing area has been a wonderful place for my Dad to receive his rehabilitation after his fall in October. The Nurses and Therapists and everyone that works here are compassionate and caring. My Dad has spent 4 weeks in this Community and will be going home this week. It has been a cheerful place and there are activities planned daily to keep the patients busy and happy. It is warm and welcoming. I am thankful my Dad was able to do his rehabilitation here. read more

We visited Brookdale rehabilitation unit prior to my knee replacement for the "sniff" test--they passed, and we were pleased with what we saw and heard. Everyone knew before meeting me that I was a nurse-practitioner, which was fine. Arrived at 5pm on Wednesday: a problem with interfacing with covering physician/NP team that late--they came up short dealing with prompt assessment, pain management, complex medication needs. They eventually got it together by declining to provide medications which I had furnished. Their track record improved over time as we had to alter medications for side-effects. PT/OT were phenomenal, coping with minuscule space with flexibility and resourcefulness. Good at explaining rationale, assessing progress, maintaining motivation, effective use of basic equipment. The nursing, ancillary staff, including the cleaning crew were unfailingly helpful, considerate, cheerful. They were generally prompt with meeting needs and careful to minimize awaking at night. I cannot say enough positive things about the staff; even folks who are not totally cognizant are greeted by name with eye contact, a touch, respectfully. They are unfailingly patient with people who are really in need of patience while recovering. The food is abysmal; as important as nutrition is to healing, most meats and many veggies are fried, the rest cooked beyond recognition. Alternative foods purported to be available were not--I tried several times. Waste is prodigious. Rumor has it that meals for assisted living are better; I cannot imagine that duplicating meal prep effort is cost-effective. At our exit interview, they said they would look into it; I believe they will. With the aging of my family and community, I'll be checking. read more
