I am extremely disappointed with the treatment I received from Constance at the front desk during my recent visit. While the staff member conducted their duties with a surface-level professionalism, their tone and behavior were condescending , dismissive, and bordered on openly rude. At one point in the conversation she stated "How did you even get in here?". It's important to mention there was one man sitting at the front desk when I checked in on the tablet, She of course wasn't. What concerned me most, however, were the subtle but unmistakable racial undertones in the interactions--particularly in the difference between how I was treated compared to the other guest. read more

I was at Querencia for 10 days of physical therapy. The care was superb: The physical and occupational therapists were appropriately challenging and consistently good-humored. I received round-the-clock care from true professionals who were always gentle and kind. The facility itself is beautiful and in a beautiful setting. Also, the food service was excellent and flexible. All they lacked was Cholula, which my wife supplied. read more

There is nowhere to park at this place. Not only that ,when you do find parking in the back you then can't get into the building you have to walk the mile around to the front. The place is beautiful and the food is good. If your parents like interruptions every five minutes in the room this is the place. read more

We moved here just over two months ago after doing significant online research and visiting this and several other CCRC facilities, both here and in southern California. I cannot imagine being more pleased with our choice. The Plaza, which is a part of the Querencia complex and provides just about all of the therapy, recovery care, skilled nursing, and late in life care we can imagine, and it is just a walk down a hallway from the main residential part of the community. You are free to do as much or as little as you want here, although there are many programs promoting physical and mental health opportunities that are designed to promote health and long life. The staff, referred to here as 'The Team' are exceptionally friendly and helpful. As new residents we are surprised at how quickly we felt at home here. One of the things we like is that the Querencia is not as large as the units we looked at in California and we have come to know a lot of the other residents here. We immediately became very happy with our choice and thouroughly look forward to spending many years in our new community. read more

My father has been at Querencia rehabilitation (The Plaza) for 2.5 weeks following open-heart surgery. I cannot say enough good things about the facility, the staff, the therapy, the food, the activities and the care he has received while here. We are so lucky they had a bed available, as I cannot imagine him going through rehab anywhere else. He has improved dramatically during his time here and goes home tomorrow. The nurses are amazing. The physical, occupational and speech therapists are wonderful. The food is great. There are several little shaded patios to sit on when you visit. Libraries to have quiet conversations. A salon for patients. Daily entertainment (violinists, discussions, games) planned. And the grounds are beautiful. My dad also has a lifelong friend who has lived here in an apartment in the independent living section for 7 years and likes it very much. Simply put, if you need short- or long-term care for an elderly family member in Austin, you could not do better than Querencia. read more

Both my parents have been in Querencia for about 5 years. They love it. When it is my time, I hope I can afford this facility.

A family member stayed on the skilled nursing unit at this facility for close to 10 weeks. This is a newer facility; the facility itself is beautiful and the location (nestled in the hills of west austin) is really nice. The things I found positive about Querencia aren't the things that I find are important when caring for the elderly or disabled. Sure, it's a gorgeous place, the rooms are a nice size, and the amenities are plentiful; however, the things I look for when thinking of the care of a loved one were mostly absent or only happened after some complaining. The thing I found the most frustrating, that other places seem to do a better job with, is case management. It's nice to have a point person who really understands a patient and their individual needs. At Querencia, the case manager is whoever is on the floor at the time, and depending upon how well that person communicated with the shift prior, and the shift prior, and the shift prior.....things are lost in translation. This lack of consistent case management leaves much to be desired. To be fair, the care my dad received was satisfactory and his therapists did a good job. However, in my opinion, a retirement community that provides a spectrum of services, to include services for those with significant impairments, there should be a better service model in place. read more

I disagree with the comments made before me. My parents have lived in the independent living section at the Q for almost 10 years. Read your contract very carefully: there are no meals on Sunday evenings, you can not order food to take to your apt after 4:00 (say you want to eat in one evening.....no deal if you order at 4:05!), you are frowned upon and at times not allowed to take food back to your apt to your spouse anytime from dining room (ridiculous when you pay for it!), new sign- in system is AWFUL at front desk (not needed and other places like this do not use!), monthly rate goes up almost 4-5% each year, if you need something painted or repaired in your apt - good luck getting services done; front parking lot for visitors very small! The food is maybe 2 stars in the dining area.....you would think when you pay $6-7000/month, you would get excellent food! NO, YOU DO NOT! Back to sign in system, if you have anyone come to your apt (accountant, cleaning person, chef, secretary, driver, ironing person, "companion/private care helper", computer service person, etc) you have to PAY monthly fee for this person to be cleared to enter the building but they do NOT check backgrounds of others or make visitors/family pay. THIS IS NOT GUARANTEEING SAFETY! ITS A JOKE! The valet driver is sometimes there not always.....hours are varied. Cars are left in middle driveway and not taken away for others, at times. The Assisted Living scares me, too....we had a relative over there and the doctor was awful! They messed up my uncle's medications and the doctor was not available when needed. Our family was not contacted when he became ill and this was ignored for 24 hrs. IMPT - check who doctor on staff is in Assisted Living anywhere you go! Look up their reputation!! IMPT! read more

Querencia at Barton Creek is a great place if your goal is to feel good about placing your parent there. For short-term rehabilitation, I'd stay very, very, very far away. But I'll start with a list of the things they do right. The setting of the facilities are beautiful. The rooms are what you make them, which is to say, if you are in for rehab, they are really nice hospital rooms, but some long-term residents have made their surroundings quite nice. The housekeeping staff are marvelous. Thoughtful, responsive, professional. The rooms are immaculate. It takes a day or two for the laundry staff to figure out who you are, but they perform a terrific service. The activities director works harder than any activity director I've ever seen, and my family were partners in a very well run retirement home. This activity director cares and takes the initiative to make sure every resident is engaged with life. Meals are like no other retirement home. It's not 5-stars and the chef probably doesn't have a James Beard Award, but you won't get better food, consistently better food at any convalescent center. And the servers are a delight. The phlebotomist who comes to Querencia has "got it." Painless phlebotomy is rare. She provides it. So why I am rating Querencia with one star? It's simple. Nursing and medical care, and social work, are very seriously deficient. I'll start with nursing. I'm a type 1 diabetic. Years ago I got a viral infection. It wiped out my body's ability to make insulin. I have antibodies to my own pancreatic cells. I have zero insulin production. The very first day I was at Querencia the LVN providing services to the entire floor announced that I didn't need insulin. You are too fat, she says, that is your problem. I have a good idea of what eating one meal without insulin will do, so I told her, OK, I'll eat this sandwich, but you come back here to measure my blood sugars and if they are high, FOLLOW THE DOCTOR'S ORDERS. I ate the sandwich. My sugars hit the 400's. I requested insulin. I had to get it from another nurse. However, that nurse did lots of double and weekend shifts. After that incident, she gave me my insulin, but she always made me sit and wait 30 to 45 minutes and arrive late to meals. There's more, but a word about the doctor, too. I had been hospitalized for septic shock due to an itty bitty foot wound, not just once, five times. I had been near death a few weeks earlier. I arrived at Querencia with very clear orders that I needed daily debridement. The doctor, who didn't show up right away after my arrival, announced "Well, I'm not going to do it." I said, fine, but it has to be done. How do we arrange that? It took ten days to get wound care. My infection got worse and worse during that time. Of course, before I ever got to Querencia, the doctors figured out what kind of bacteria were causing the problem. The Querencia doctor took me off the antibiotics that fight the bacteria I actually had, and quadrupled the dose of the antibiotic that doesn't work. This proved to be a problem. After two weeks, I was getting really sick, but the doctor OK'd me for discharge. The social worker, about whom a few words are appropriate, put together a little plan for me to go to my own apartment. Along the way, she announced that my insurance was being canceled (it wasn't, it was the 20th of one month and I hadn't yet made the payment due for the 1st of the next month), but I could get any policy I wanted, why not cancel my insurance (I couldn't, my insurance has a six-week open season later in the year), and "You asked to be transferred from our facility," when I hadn't. She obviously wanted me to go, but I didn't ask just to go. She also made a habit of barging in without knocking when I was coming out of the shower. Maybe these tactics work on patients with cognitive deficiencies. I don't suffer cognitive deficiencies. I kept telling them I needed treatment, I needed treatment. Finally things came to a head when it was obvious to me I was in septic shock. I call the nurse, the same one who didn't want to give me insulin. The patient care assistant, the only one who wasn't really good, and he kind of made for the others, takes 15 minutes to answer my call button. "You want your dinner tray delivered to your room?" "No, I want you to call an ambulance." Then another 45 minutes pass and the nurse from hell arrives. "You want your tray in your room." She wasn't asking. She was announcing. I again requested an ambulance. After two hours, she comes in, very angry, announcing, if you leave this facility you can never come back here again. We will throw out your things. If you want to take your cell phone and laptop, take them now. I said, "Call the ambulance." The ambulance comes, I'm taken to ER, and then I'm put in ICU for five days for treatment of septic shock. Querencia didn't, I'll report, throw out my things. Never again. read more

My husband needed skilled nursing after a hospital stay. We were unable to get into Querencia at first, but transferred there as soon as we could. It is a lovely facility and all the staff are so helpful. The physical therapy is excellent. If you are looking for the best, go to Querencia. read more

Indeed an extraordinary level of care, beautiful facilities, nice staff, and wonderful food BUT very expensive. Expect the cost to go up every year about five percent or more. But then, if you're looking at Querencia... money is probably no object. read more

My parents chose Querencia not only because of the beautiful setting and amazing amenities but also the kind, responsive and superbly trained staff. My mom was a resident at the Plaza, Skilled Nursing Unit. Can't say enough good about the wonderful care she received. Extraordinary personnel. Great care. Outstanding staff. Good Food. I had peace of mind when she was there. It is expensive but she was a medicare patient and they treated her wonderful. Hated for her to have to leave. Would recommend them to anyone who can afford it or needing short term skilled nursing rehab. read more
