Stopped in for lunch based on a clients recommendation. I ordered the chicken salad with lettuce, tomato and hot peppers on dark rye with a pickle. The first ting I noticed was this was not rye bread, it was white bread colored dark and it was quite mushy. The second thing I noticed when I sat down was that they forgot the hot peppers. The chicken salad seemed to be homemade and had decent size chunks of chicken however it was a bit bland and needed seasoning. The pickle was incredibly salty and I could not finish it. While the prices initially appeared reasonable the food quality was not anywhere near what I expected. read more

The sandwiches here are excellent. There is a reason that the servers move you through the line quickly - it's because the line is usually long! Don't be fooled by some of the negative reviews. The bread (NY Bakery) is local to Syracuse. It's good and fresh. I've only had a few of the various meats here, but I can easily say their tuna is my favorite in Syracuse. The pickles you get with your sandwich come in two varieties: a sour pickle and a "fresher" tasting variety that tastes more like sliced cucumber. Both are good and you can request either with your sandwich. Their soups rotate from day to day and I generally enjoy most of the ones I've tried. Clam chowder is unique (does lack a lot of clams) and they make a mean potato chowder. Their chili is ok and their Neptune Stew is very popular though I've never tried it. I wanted a hot sandwich so opted for their reuben (which they do not toast). Their 1/2 sandwich is what you would normally consider a normal size sandwich. They warmed up the corned beef, sauerkraut and swiss. The dark rye was super soft and the russian dressing laid on thick. The sandwich was delicious. They wrapped it up with a couple sliced pickles on the outer wrapper and it left me wanting more. I also tried their macaroni salad for $1.60 and that was okay. Do not visit here unless you want food poisoning and no compensation. I ordered a whole Cuban and threw up everything that I ate. I called the next day and talked to one of the many managers and was told they cut everything fresh daily. Another manager told me they cut less than what they need daily so they run out at the end of the night. Which is fine, but when I asked of they hold the whole slabs of meat they said no. Very back and forth with information. Also the owner (craig) is the only one able to give refunds on anything and they had to call him twice on this. He has not contacted me. Will NEVER visit again. I often go to Brooklyn Pickle on Burnet but the last 2 visits going in at dinner time have been terrible. The kids have no clue what is going on and would rather screw around. There is no supervision. I told the kid making my one sandwich 4 times you used mayonnaise not Russian dressing he denied he was wrong. It was differently mayonnaise when I ate it. I even told him it shouldn't be white! He asked repeatedly what meat I was having on it and what else i wanted on it. He did this for both sandwiches. I wanted to say write it down cause obviously you cannot remember. He must not have wiped the counter the outside bread had small lettuce pieces. The one sandwich the meat was not proportioned evenly so one side had a lot of meat the other hardly any. He did a terrible job all away around. I watched a guy who called in an order stand there for a good 15minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge him and then say it would be a while. I assumed the other girl making sandwiches was doing his order because she too seemed lost! I think i counted 5 other employees not doing anything as the line got longer. A CNY staple. I can't believe I have never checked in. When I am out of town , especially out of state I get craving a hot pastrami sandwich, dark rye, extra Russian (house made). I did not know there was any other true way to have a pastrami or corned beef sandwich. There is, but that does not mean this is not the best way. They have soups that must be house made also. I love Brooklyn Pickle but a recent experience has soured me to the point where I may never go there again. I called the east side location about twenty minutes to 7 on a Saturday night and was put on hold and no one picked back up. I hung up and tried to more times. On both occasions, I was placed on hold and no one bothered to answer. I was already on my way to the location, but when I got there at just after seven, I was informed the location was closed. If they had told me they were closing the FIRST time i called, i probably would have made it in time to purchase my dinner. Instead, by putting me on hold and NOT EVEN BOTHERING to tell me they were closing at seven instead of the advertised closing time of eight, i would not have to figure out a different option for dinner. Foods good but when I called today to place a rather large take out order for our office, the gal that answered the phone was rude to me. These employees are joyless and sullen nearly every time I come in, and they don't put a ton of care into making the sandwiches - too often they're both sloppy and bland. Even the eponymous sandwich tastes cheaper than it did a couple years ago. I'm also with the customer who criticizes the pickles - two times in a row the pickle slices served with the sandwich have been absolutely revolting. I was a little depressed when I couldn't get through to Dino BBQ the day after Thanksgiving. We ended up ordering in Brooklyn Pickle, which was ALMOST as good. (Almost.) Huge, overstuffed deli sandwiches with fresh fixings-- cold cuts, veggies, salads (egg, tuna, chicken, seafood), whatever your pleasure. Don't be fooled by the paltry sounding "half" size sub or sandwich as I almost was. Half a slice of their bread is twice as big as a normal piece of packaged bread. L, T, and O are standard, sub sauce on request. On top of that, several of their namesake pickle chips come with your enormous sandwich. Their desserts are homemade-- bread pudding, rice pudding, and other yummy options. I've had BP a few times over the years and it's always a great lunch. read more

My husband and I got subs from Brooklyn Pickle the day we moved to Syracuse and thought the subs were amazing. Fast forward to a year later, and unfortunately the Pickle has not lived up to its first impression. When the subs are made well, they are really good. Super fresh, soft rolls, good quality lunch meat, and overall yumminess. However, in my experience, the subs are only made well about half of the time. When they are not made well, its bad to the point I won't even eat the food. Problems we have had in the past include various combinations of: dry stale rolls, brown lettuce, mushy tomatoes, barely any toppings (seriously 1 piece of onion qualifies as onions?) and barely any meat (the worst offense in my book!). Perhaps if we ate in it wouldn't be as big a deal because we could ask to get things remade. But, it is very frustrating to crave a good sub, go pick them up, and get home and have something completely inedible in front of you. We almost always order on the same day and time and have ordered many, many times over the last year, so I have no idea why such variation in quality. We have been ordering from them in spite of the hit-or-miss quality (perhaps because of that initial first impression and nostalgia for our first day here), but after this weekend's food I am putting the Pickle on my avoid list. Some have said this is a Syracuse "establishment" as if it is a compliment. It is an establishment but, I'm not giving any compliments. The long story short is that I had seen this attractive looking establishment while driving by on Rt 690. My curiosity got the best of me and I finally decided to sample the great sandwiches implied by their use of "Brooklyn" in their business name. So, I order the basic, the standard, the real New York test of a sandwich: a pastrami on rye with mustard. I know I am in Wonder bread and mayonnaise territory ...oh the nightmares...but never expect my horrible dreams to come true. If you have not lived in NYC, let me explain. A pastrami sandwich is served with hand cut, hot, pastrami placed in rye bread that has a firm texture, body, caraway seeds, and a chewy crust. The pastrami is stacked generously high and is hot. No cheese, no mayo and no white bread allowed. I entered Brooklyn Pickle, walked to their counter to place my order and my nightmare began. I asked for a pastrami on rye. Then the questions began...do you want mustard or mayo with that? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Blasphemy !!! Then before I could recover, I was asked if I wanted cheese!!! HELP !!!!! I quickly downed a nitroglycerin pill to help my crushing chest pain to enable me to respond, "I would like a pastrami on rye with mustard." They pulled out 2 large slices of a floppy, brown colored bread. Next, they squirted the mustard on the brown Wonder bread. Now the really bad news...they pulled out a plastic bag from a refrigerator that contained sliced cold "pastrami". They completed the assembly of my sandwich. I paid for it and actually tried to eat this cold heap of imitation pastrami on Wonder bread with some bland cucumber, err.. pickle slices. Maybe they can make a cold ham and Swiss but, with a name like Brooklyn Pickle, they insult millions of New Yorkers. In fact, I have had better pastrami in places outside of the USA. I will not reduce my expectations of authentic regional food. read more

It's just plastic-bag bread from a company called NY Bakery. Don't believe it when they tell you it's fresh NY bakery bread. That's playing with semantics. The dressing wasn't bad, but I just thought there was way too much. When I got the sandwich home, the sandwich was just leaking dressing all over the place. They put a lot of meat on the sandwich, which is nice. But it was cold. I don't think I've ever had a pastrami or corned beef sandwich with cold meat. It's not ideal. I'm not sure if they cut their own meat, or if they just buy it. The ingredients aren't impressive and this place is FAR from the famous NYC delis that it compares itself to. I would highly recommend this Brooklyn-themed, order at the counter sandwich shop. However, you won't be able to tell what's in the sandwiches from the menu on the wall, but our questions were patiently answered by our server. More importantly he crafted each sandwich patiently to our individual specifications. Four of us all had something different and no one was disappointed. The sandwiches were huge and packed with very fresh and extremely tasty ingredients. I would rate our experience as 5 star based upon service, cost, portion and quality of food. The problem is ...... we decided to try the pickle before we left. Even more unfortunate, it obviously is their namesake. IMO the pickle reminded me of the ones I discover in the back of the fridge that are several years old and you taste them more out of curiosity than positive expectations, and then wish you hadn't! It has a consistency somewhere between gelatin and tofu. I might forgive the texture if it had some redeeming taste, but no flavor, even the vinegar, could overcome their epic saltiness. The sandwiches are generous, but the corned beef isn't hot and isn't made in house. To tell me this has anything resembling anything Brooklyn or a genuine deli is a bit silly. Sliced white and wheat bread is fine for the Syracuse inbreds but a real deli has some fresh baked stuff with love...Italian or a Jewish rye baked locally. The knish was microwaved...soggy.
