Sometimes there is so much hype surrounding a place that when you get there and try the food it's a huge letdown. This is not that place. Brooklyn Square lives up to every bit of the hype. We came here at 9:50pm (they close at 10pm) after trying to avoid the fast food places surrounding Great Adventure. Even though we were still in Jackson it was a good 20 min drive. If you want to really test out a places customer service walk in with 5 people, 10 min before they close, when everyone there is cleaning up and closing out and ask them to make you a pizza. We were still greeted with a smile and friendly service. We chose to sit at the outdoor picnic tables so we could stay out of their way but we were offered a table inside several times. They turned the lights back on outside and brought out everything we needed to enjoy our pizza. We chose the Brooklyn Square which is a square pie with fresh mozzarella on the bottom and sauce on top. The dough was light and fluffy. The sauce had the perfect sweetness to it. The fresh mozzarella was delicious. They definitely did not skimp on quality ingredients. This is the first time I've had a square pie that was so light that I could eat more than one piece. When you walk in it looks like a very small place with a couple of small tables inside and the picnic tables outside. There is also another large room inside with seating. There is a full menu if you're not into pizza too. Finally there is a real reason for me to drive this far down on route 9! Definitely will be back and will be trying out their Manalapan location that is a lot closer to home for me. read more

Here and there I'd been hearing good things about Brooklyn Square Pizza. When they opened one up in Jackson in a shabby little strip mall, I drove by it many times but saying to myself: "Gee, I've got to try that sometime." So, today I had some other errands to do in the area and I planned to go there . . . and I did. WOW . . . was I disappointed. I looked in the case . . . the guy behind it was daydreaming (or something) and I had to wave at him to explain to a couple of different things I pointed at. He had an odd foreign accent (definitely not Italian) and I finally settled on something with sausage on it. I grabbed a Pepsi from the cooler . . . he heated up the "slice" and put it on a very cheap and flimsy paper plate . . . and I went in to the completely empty dining room (this was mid afternoon around 3) and sat down at a table. Once in a while I'll run across exceptionally good pie . . . this wasn't it . . . not even close. Here at the Jersey Shore one of our specialties is "thin crust" pizza . . . this was the complete opposite . . . and the topping (i.e. sauce) had an odd taste. I'm at a loss for words to even describe it but it left an aftertaste in my mouth all the way home. I ate about half of the slice (chunk) . . . and had to ask for salt as there were no condiments or spices on any of the tables . . . but that didn't help. Very good food, but highly overrated and definitely overpriced. Personally, I prefer a more traditionally thick square slice. With the number of pizza joints in the area, you are guaranteed to find something you like at a much more reasonable price. I was told that you come here for the food ... not the ambiance, and they were right. This is far from a fine dining experience, but the food is pretty good. Our server was very nice. We were 8 people, so there was enough variety at the table to get a good mix of dishes. Although many people just come for the delicious pizzas, we had full dinners, including veal, chicken, shrimp, and pasta dishes. Everything came out hot and tasted good. Portions were large and priced fairly. I'd give it 5 stars, but I wish you didn't have to walk through a crowd of people picking up pizzas to get to the dining room. read more

We were told this place has the BEST pizza. Our experience wasn't amazing. Tried to call and get thru for at least 10 minutes... I think it was longer. When we got thru we asked for a chicken parm pizza, garlic knots and extra sauce on the side. We like dipping our pizza in sauce. We've never had any problem ordering extra sauce ANYWHERE else. Apparently the girl who was taking the order had never heard of anyone ordering extra sauce and told us they don't give extra sauce and when we said we would purchase it, she said they don't sell their sauce!!!????? Not to trigger anyone but I'm guessing she was very young and doesn't have much life experience. Unreal. So after some pressing she had to talk with someone and came back with we will sell you a pint for $4. Which is great. Thank you. She said 45 minutes to pick up!!!?? Okay. No problem. 40 minutes later, we are there and pick up the order. Apparently the extra sauce was a huge deal because they talked about it like it was something completely abnormal.... like we asked for a gallon of garlic. Weird We get home and the pizza is Luke warm, the garlic knots are cold and for a pizza place that doesn't give extra sauce or sell it, they gave us a small dish of sauce for the garlic knots? I mean what the ****!!! The pizza was just okay, They put sesame seeds on the crust. Ehhhh it's okay. It was a little soggy and the crust was a little burnt. The garlic knots while cold were pretty good. The sauce wasn't really anything special. Just a basic pizza sauce. I think that our food had been sitting awhile and got cold. I'm a guy who grew up in Gravesend Brooklyn. I lived a mile away from L&B Spumoni Gardens where I ate their square pizza 2-3 times a week. I considered their Sicilian pies the ultimate pizza. When I moved to New Jersey I had to pay an arm and a leg in tolls to go into Brooklyn to have my favorite pizza. A friend told me about Brooklyn Square in Jackson, he said it's comparable to L&B. I was skeptical, but I had nothing to lose so I tried the upside down pie, which is the same cheese on the bottom, sauce on top as I was used to in Brooklyn. To my amazement this pie was awesome and rated it above my lifelong Brooklyn favorite at L&B. I even gifted a canvas of the Brooklyn Bridge to Peter Grippo, the owner of this awesome establishment. My husband watches the One Bite Pizza reviews on YouTube. After watching the video for Brooklyn Square Pizza, we knew we had to try it out and man it did not disappoint. It was worth the hour drive. They were out of garlic knots so we got the garlic bread and the waitress convinced us to get it with mozzarella. It was such garlicky heaven. Super Caesar salad hit the spot and helped us feel a bit less guilty about all the carbs ;). We got the square pizza with half pepperoni, but honestly should have gotten the pie without it. Both halves were good, but the plain really hit the spot. They were very generous with the amount of pepperoni though. Only downside was that it increased the amount of grease. I stopped on way back to Philly. It was so worth it! I ordered two Slices first the Upside Down- Sicilian style. Just delicious and so unique. light , crunchy with incredible sauce/ cheese combo. Best square pizza I have ever tasted and I am not exaggerating. The crust is fluffy and with so much flavor. The sauce and cheese combination on the upside down pizza is perfect. We chose the jersey pie which had pepperoni on it and very tasty. This is as close to NYC pizza as you'll get in jersey. I would consider this in my top 5 list for best pizza tasted. The Jackson location is in a strip mall but don't let it fool you as the food is great. We also had the chicken fingers and French fries which were also very flavorful. Highly recommended. I'm a sucker for a square pie. They've got a crust style for everyone's liking. I went with the Classic namesake Brooklyn Square. If you like a doughy pie, this one is for you. Simple with sauce and cheese. It doesn't get much better than this. Perfect piping hot right out of the pan, but maybe even better room temp and hour or so later. If you like a crispier crust, they've got squares in that style as well. The Vodka, incredible. Could easily devour a whole pie, but opted for a slice to enjoy in the car. Going back bc I spied on their slices available that they've got Roni cups. Huge fan. Worth any amount of drive time. Super deserving of their coveted 2017 best pizza in NJ title. read more

this place is in a discreet plaza in jackson nj and if you dont look hard enough you will miss it. I was excited to try again based off all the good press. I liked it before but let me see if it lives up to the hype on the 2nd visit. Ordered the plain slice and a whole square pie. The plain slice is DELICIOUS. Well made and arguably better than the square. It is unique with sesame seeds on the crust. The crust is perfectly cooked. The sauce has good flavor. I believe these people had a pizzeria in brooklyn named peter pizza which was my favorite until it closed. The square was also very good. Is it up there with spumoni?! No... but it is one step under that. This square is a little more doughy and doesnt have the same texture and flavor as spumoni. Dont get me wrong it is very good but comparing it to the best square on earth is tough. I would highly recommend. This place is solid. read more
