I ordered an egg, ham, and cheese on a roll along with a freshly made smoothie, and both were outstanding. The sandwich was hot, fresh, and exactly what you want for a classic deli breakfast sandwich. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I returned on our last day and grabbed another sandwich to take on the plane home. Friendly service, quality ingredients, and great execution. If you're in the area, Smith Gourmet Deli is definitely worth a stop.

The flavor was good but the texture was soft, mushy and just not what I want in a turkey sandwhich. It ran me about 12.00 and it was worth the experience.

Those seeded rolls have seeds deep in the bread so we found tons of seeds in the bread still and couldn't eat them. Just feels very careless and these sandwiches ain't cheap. The location is inside a bodega, no tables, simple place. The guys making the sandwich are friendly. There's not really anything special about this sandwich, but having it chopped is a different flavor experience.

This place is owned by the same people who own Papacito's on Manhattan Ave, and it seems to share their sister restaurant's bottomless lust for employee incompetence and ludicrous price-gouging. Like Papacitos, it's tasty when they get it right, but it's run like shit. Both of these places seem to be out of half of their menu half of the time. If there's one thing that a good restaurant rides on, it's consistancy, and if you can't count on coming there and getting something you liked from before, I just don't see the point. It's not fucking French Laundry: we're not there to be amused by culinary wizardry. We want a sandwich. Even when available, the food is never good enough to justify the price. Food there is at least 20% above what it needs to be. It's a small space, there's no seating, and few things are actually organic despite the emphasis on the label. There is not magic fairy dust and gold leaf in the sandwiches: you are just getting screwed by hipsters. The only way people could possibly be convinced to sift through the aloof service and the overblown prices is if they though they were cool for coming here- but, I just don't think there's anything cool about paying too much and getting too little back. The environment is not cute or nice and it doesn't make you feel like cutting them some slack. The staff has no idea what's going on, what's on their menu or how to help you, and when the managers finally swoop in to right the situation, you find out they're just as stoner-ly and inept as anyone. What I'm saying is: any sort of benevolent feelings you might have about supporting local business, or giving the kids a chance, etc, get sapped quick. If you think you will escape this by ordering over the phone: get ready to get called back 5 times while they slowly edit your order based on what little they have available, and then get ready for that order to take well over an hour to travel 10 blocks to your house. Happened to me 3 times in a row. I'd also like to point out that this place calls itself " the new standard for the 'Bodega'". What this is apparently referring to is: the only convenience store with slow service, about 5% of what any bodega has to offer, with prices that are a good 250% above any bodega you're going to find. What, then, could this "new standard" really mean? Oh, white hipsters behind the counter, making sure the won't have to rub elbows with poor people. A upscale, white person's "convenience" store. The New Standard. Thanks guys. It's about this time that you realize you just paid $9 for some vegetable slivers on ho-hum bread. You have been screwed. Move on. read more

It's heartwarming to see so many well-articulated reaffirmations of the demoralizing experience that is lending your patronage to the Standard. My experience is similar to that of many other reviewers in that I live incredibly close to the Standard, like, across the street, so naturally I wanted to believe it was my friendly neighborhood coffee shop at which I could get my daily bagels and coffee. A friendly neighborhood coffeehouse, to me, entails baristas who humanize you as a customer, who make you feel like a valued "regular," who realize that they are indeed peddling bagels and coffee instead of sellin' merch at an Of Montreal concert. Instead, at the Standard, as is the "standard" in most obscenely cliched overpriced-poorly organized-vegan hipster coffee establishments, they rely on the nature of poor alienated teenagers struggling to find their place in the Big City alongside the Beats and the Factory elite of old: they will accept any amount of abuse for that feeling of cool, that identity-asserting coffee shop scene. The Standard, I suppose, provides that with its perpetual roster of chic, American Apparel clad debutantes and glowering gentlemen smoking their hand-rolled American Spirit tobacco outside its doors, its disaffected, scowling baristas, and its fucking overemphasis on ORGANIC. If being organic necessitates avocados years past their prime, BLT's that cost $7, and a small coffee that is the size of one shot of espresso, then the Dunkin Donuts a few blocks down the street seems like the prudent choice. Organic is good, but only when organic also means good, and not just for the sake of it. And as for the dude with the army hat (is that what it is?) and glasses....fuck him. Fuck him. He epitomizes all the unabashedly pretentious, holier-than-thou, New York smugness that makes this city (not all, not all) a shell of its once legitimately progressive self. Obviously my review of this shop and this douche is echoed by many other reviewers on this site and I wonder, if the aforementioned douchebag reads these sterling reports on himself, how he will reconcile himself with the notion of his douchebaggery staring him in the face from so many objective sources? But therein lies the true art of hipsterhood, I suppose. Oh yeah, and I also made an account on this site expressly to write a review of this place...because I was pissed and needed a venue to discharge it. read more

First of all, let me say that I am also glad to see a place that offers natural food and vegetarian choices here in Greenpoint. I like the concept of the place, as well; a friendly bodega that offers healthy food and ecologically friendly odds and ends? Sounds great, right? So why the two star rating? [sigh] They forgot about the friendly. Someday someone will open a place such as this that will not have the blended air of hippie self-righteousness and hipster douchebageyness that permeates Brooklyn Standard. When that happens, I will be very happy. Since BS (apropos initials?) is right down the block, I might stop in for a sandwich occasionally. If it lacked -- or loses (fingers crossed) -- the kooler than thou attitude, then I could see myself being something of a regular. (But I am not hopeful. I fear this is the latest outpost of the Williamsburg invasion of Greenpoint that has already claimed large swaths of Franklin Street.) Oh yeah- the interior space is awkwardly arranged, as well. Some simple signs might clear up confusion about where to order... and where the coffee is... that sort of thing. When I stopped in the other day to check out what they have to offer and try their coffee (thumbs up for being organic and fair trade or whatever, by the way; thumbs way down for its burned-out taste), there was a small cluster of customers trying to figure out how to actually obtain food -- and a couple of disinterested 20-somethings behind the counter sort of blankly watching it all (perhaps writing avant-garde theater pieces, or math rock songs in their heads). I sincerely hope the place improves. I would love to be able to walk down the street for a reasonably priced vegetarian sandwich without the snobby attitude. read more

Aw, the Brooklyn Standard needs a little love. This place has great prepared food options, especially from the hot bar M-F 5-11pm. I usually get an assortment of different veggies - sweet potatoes, asparagus, squash, whatever local is in season - never overcooked & spiced just right. If you want something heartier they always have a meat and/or meat-substitute offering. In the fridge you will find options like fresh potato salad (flavor may vary slightly depending on who is working that day, but if you like dill you can't go wrong), quinoa, hummus, etc. I will admit to having only tried one of the sandwiches (probably because I do not usually frequent the Standard midday) so I would not be the best judge of those, and the Key Lime Pie (from an outside bakery) is definitely not great, and the small cup of coffee is rather small... But the Cloud Cookies from Baked are amazing, and I am usually happy when able to source quick dinner + dessert + drinks + breakfast options that live up to my "standards" (don't mind the pun) at one locale (ie: a healthy hot meal, beer, chocolate, grapefruit juice, yogurt, Stumptown beans...). And they keep adding products to their inventory. If you are looking to do your daily grocery shopping or compare to the cheapest deli then no, this is not the spot for you, but if you are a slightly discerning food buyer looking for reliable rations then give it a shot. read more

I'm really only writing this as a response to all the hate BKS has been getting on here. 1.) The last time I checked, bagels are a breakfast item - so sorry that they don't have any at 4pm. 2.) If any of the cashiers are rude or short with you, it is probably because you're being difficult or extremely annoying. I don't expect people that have never worked a service job in their life to understand. Keep in mind that Brooklyn Standard's cashiers work 8-9hrs straight and are dealing with HUNDREDS of transactions a day. No one should expect them to have perma-smiles. 3.) Their delivery people ride bikes. If your lazyass is ordering from Williamsburg, then yeah, it'll take awhile. 4.) Please keep in mind that there is usually only TWO people working at a time. One cashier and one cook. This isn't McDonalds. Don't expect it to be. 5.) Brooklyn Standard offers amazing organic and vegan treats. Their prices aren't what you'd see at a regular bodega, but at the same time, this ain't your run of the mill bodega. If you don't like it, you don't have to be a patron. JUST SAYING. read more

The easiest way to describe this place is: Hipster Shithole I walk in and who do I see behind the counter? Caleb VonTrustfund with his lice beard and ski hat on giving me that smug hipster look because I'm not dressed like Eddie Vedder circa-1992 or in full tweed with a Rollie Fingers moustache. So as I'm ordering my SMALL COFFEE THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOURSELF FOR $2.00, overly-tattooed Molly ArtSupplies walks in and orders a roasted tofu with beet marmalade Panini or something like that. I swear - I wanted to give her one more tattoo that said "I'm a stupid wanna-be vegan hipster" right on her effin forehead. How dare this place call itself the "Brooklyn Standard"? Brooklyn standard seems cool. I think i would like to see a larger range of produce. i agree with everything being local and or done on premises. that is their mission i have noticed after checking out the blogspot. I disagree with the comment Tony M has just made. perhaps who this "celebrity cashier" is, someone that seems very informed about what is going on in that store. I spoke with her numerous times about those "non little debby" items. they are all made at the shop and each have a story behind it. this person you may be speaking about is actually a hard worker, and how do you know if the sweater was not given or gotten at a consignment sotre??? ever heard of a sale? anyways. the line cook in the evening is awesome, and that cashier is actually earnest and informed and nice and on top of things. perhaps you may be mumbling? love the vegan sandwiches. read more

The food has always been great and the service has always been quick, helpful, and appropriate, especially in these times, when it is both incredibly stressful and dangerous to work in a small space, taking hundreds of strangers into your business every single day. It's incredible that in this day in age, in a neighborhood that has lost so many small businesses over the past 9 months, that people still want to come and make petty judgments on the service of a place that has great food, and gets it to you quickly, efficiently, and safely. Man, what is with all the haters on the Standard's yelp page? I just moved out of Greenpoint and this is really the only thing I miss about it. Negligent landlords? Glad to be rid of you. Hipsters and (worse) vocal hipster haters? Can do without. But the Standard?? I miss you! I agree with the reviewer who said any vegan in the neighborhood would be crazy not to make this place a go-to. I used to go in here just about everyday (my expanding gut appreciates this break from the vegan chocolate-layered strawberry shortcake). They have delicious coffee, GREAT vegan sandwiches (banh mi and jerked seitan are the best), and awesome vegan desserts. They even have vegan gluten free stuff for my gluten intolerant bf. and I've always found the counter staff to be very friendly! read more

This place is great and is much needed, if all people have to complain about is the attitude of the people that work there... Well they obviously have not lived here long enough to really appreciate how good it really is! #1, the pricing is great, I mean $1 for a cup of Organic Fair Trade Coffee? #2 The food is awesome, the baked goods are ALWAYS fresh, and the vegan menu/ options are outstanding. #3 The interior is cute... I have not experienced bad service at this place, which is funny because most places in the city just ignore you if you don't know what you want and move on to the next customer. Appalled. I've never written a one star review, but I felt compelled to write one after my experience with delivery today. In short, the worst customer service I've ever experienced at a restaurant, and an insanely rude person! Seamless order was quoted a 20 minute delivery time. After calling a couple of times when it'd been over an hour, I asked to cancel my order. The order still showed up, over 2 hours after I placed the order. I was hung up on 3 times, and treated terribly. I love their gluten free bagels and have been ordering regularly - won't ever again! I see allll the nasty yelp reviews commenting on the terrible service, how are they not getting their act together? Incredible. read more

I would give it only one star but I used to come here all the time and was always satisfied.....key word used. Lately they really have dropped the ball. The last few times I've order the register ladies were rude, only really wanting to engage with the customers they know and not the others there. In addition, I ordered two breakfast sandwiches (which I've been ordering for years and love) but this time they were greasy and the bacon was pure fat. My friend and I couldn't even eat it. I still go there occasionally for coffee or juices; they're ok but definitely overpriced. It's really a shame because this was my favorite go to place. read more

I LOVE BROOKLYN STANDARD. this is the place i go for anything: greek salad, vegan sandwiches, chocolate cloud cookies, soy milk, stumptown coffee, and smart water. it's the best place in greenpoint. the staff is helpful, and the music is great. i only wish there were a few seats, but you can always take the food across the street to the royale. without bk standard, i would be lost, but since moving to the nabe last summer i pretty much go here every day. thanks!! read more

The Brooklyn Standard owner/manager is probably waiting in line along with the other customers at the nearby fruit/vegetable market, and when they come to his store, he charges 5 times the price.
