We looked at this location for my mom because she needed more care than we were able to give her at home anymore, it all seemed like a great fit, the woman that gave us the tour was wonderful and kind, unfortunately she hit ill and they let her go. One thing that I cannot say enough about is the activities department! If not for them I would have taken my mom out, they kept my mom busy and entertainment for the last six months of her life. Jacinda the director should open her own business! I have so many items that my mother made that are beautiful and I will cherish them forever. Let me get to the negative about this company. The management is truly awful, I won't go into too many specifics but I know that karma will have her way with these folks. I will start with the family is supposed to get together with a manager and get a 30 and 60 day review of how their loved one is doing, Jack the manager had to change the date, ok fine but when I went in on the date he changed it to he started yelling at me (the customer paying 9k a month) saying he was too busy! There is a nurse case manager who oversees the nursing staff, unbeknownst to me I don't even think she's an RN, that I caught in a bunch of lies about my mother falling, which ultimately resulted in her death. I had asked to see the video to see my moms fall and was given the runaround how Jack couldn't find it on the film (what??? Why do you have cameras then?) my mom was in hospice care and did not have a long outlook but this definitely rushed her process along. I could go into many more stories, something that really left a bad taste in my mouth? They sent me a bill after my mom had passed away, keep in mind, this is a 50 bed facility, not a huge corporation! My mom had been gone over five weeks now, I'm still awaiting the refund I was promised three weeks ago, the management doesn't care about their clients whatsoever, it's all about the money, thank goodness for Lorna, Denise and Jacinda!

Otherwise, the food has become close to inedible, and certainly not healthy. We try to supplement it with things we cook ourselves in our microwave, but it's hard and expensive as we have to send our private home health aide out to shop for us. The other ongoing problem is that the building continues to be overrun with mice, and the control efforts are half-hearted, at best. Even if honestly I admit my interests are vested, I will say however, that as an entertainer, in my life experience as a performer in venues such as this, I have never in my 50 or so professional years, had ever been so respected to have been given even 5 engagements in a year much less the 20+ dates that Brookdale assigned me in 2015. I believe this is because they want to make their residents feel as happy and nostalgic as possible. They realize the psychological and emotional value of giving them connection with their past, and particularly for stimulating responsiveness for the memory care patients through the music and humor of their time. They realize it is crucial for their adjustment and peace of mind. The handling of the transition from the 30 year administrator to the new administrator wasn't, in fact, a transition. There was no overlap. And no thought was given to the residents feeling about such a big change. Lack of experience of the new administrator has made living there more difficult, and reflects a less caring and empathetic view of how elderly women should be treated. The staff, by-in-large, are very kind and caring people. It's really sad that the Mission of Girdler House is "driven by compassion", yet actions do speak louder than the written word. I would not recommend this facility.

Instead, they are treated as if they are a nuisance and not worthy of common decency and care. If your job is to care for people, by all means, do it!!! Instead most of the people that work there are abusive with no understanding that the people who are living there are why they have a job. Instead, they do as little as possible and go through the motions. There are good people who work there, but they are basically abused themselves. A totally bad and negative experience. Yes they are understaffed. But I blame management for their attitude of complacency and neglect. I wish the caregivers all the luck in the world when they're in the same position. They said no, they had to do it in order. They lost her favorite pants in the laundry ... this is from someone who has very little left in life. They could have done better by her. She knew what was happening. She wanted out.
