Otherwise, the food has become close to inedible, and certainly not healthy. We try to supplement it with things we cook ourselves in our microwave, but it's hard and expensive as we have to send our private home health aide out to shop for us. The other ongoing problem is that the building continues to be overrun with mice, and the control efforts are half-hearted, at best. And no thought was given to the residents feeling about such a big change. Lack of experience of the new administrator has made living there more difficult, and reflects a less caring and empathetic view of how elderly women should be treated. The staff, by-in-large, are very kind and caring people. It's really sad that the Mission of Girdler House is "driven by compassion", yet actions do speak louder than the written word. The staff are so caring and have really taken the time to get to know our mom. She enjoys a wide variety of activities offered each day, and we were able to keep in touch with mom via FaceTime during the pandemic thanks to the staff. They said no, they had to do it in order. They lost her favorite pants in the laundry ... this is from someone who has very little left in life. It's the small things.. make her happy with the small requests. She even feared retaliation if she complained. Ultimately she gave up food and water voluntarily to die. They could have done better by her. She knew what was happening. She wanted out.

When she first arrived via ambulance, no greeting from anyone in facility. Sat in room w/ her for two hours - she could have fallen and died and no one would have known. Bed was wooden, no side rails, had to ask for those as a fall risk. Room was dirty, pubic hair on the toilet in BR. Dementia pt roaming into moms room 2-3x scaring all of us, no one seemed to care about this woman. CNA sitting in hallway w/ headphones in. Left my mom overnite. Got a call from her at 2AM scared crying. We tried to call back. The # on sticker that was on her room phone was wrong! Called and woke up an elderly man who told us to get her the hell out of there. Finally got her stayed on phone w/ her. Had soiled diaper, was 25 mins before staff came in to help her. No shower in the BR. How this place is running as a medical facility is beyond me. STAY AWAY!!!

Told them what medication I am on, they decide to change my medication. causing a second panic attack since arrival. Have to ask what medication you are being given and how much. Arrived here on 11/27/24 now 11/30/24 at 4am. Have had two panic attacks. Staff response time to incidents are poor if at all. I had to get help for my roommate when he was having problems in the bathroom. They make you feel like I have to be here even though I can take care of myself just fine. Had to call 911 to get a response from staff. Because of the holiday and long weekend, I can't get anything done to my liking. have to call on friends to have things taken care of. I feel like i'm in prison with no say in my care. Because of the long weekend they can not do anything for me. everything need to go through the so called channels, except all the channels are off for the long weekend. My next step now is trying to get discharged from this place.. I feel so sorry for all of the other residents / patients here that can not speak up for themselves. 11/30/24 -8:am shift change Saturday morning waiting for my morning meds wish me luck. I will say one thing at least the day shift staff attitudes are much better than the overnight staff. Their attitudes suck at best!. Let me start at the beginning. We looked at this location for my mom because she needed more care than we were able to give her at home anymore, it all seemed like a great fit, the woman that gave us the tour was wonderful and kind, unfortunately she hit ill and they let her go. One thing that I cannot say enough about is the activities department! If not for them I would have taken my mom out, they kept my mom busy and entertainment for the last six months of her life. Jacinda the director should open her own business! I have so many items that my mother made that are beautiful and I will cherish them forever. Let me get to the negative about this company. The management is truly awful, I won't go into too many specifics but I know that karma will have her way with these folks. I will start with the family is supposed to get together with a manager and get a 30 and 60 day review of how their loved one is doing, Jack the manager had to change the date, ok fine but when I went in on the date he changed it to he started yelling at me (the customer paying 9k a month) saying he was too busy! There is a nurse case manager who oversees the nursing staff, unbeknownst to me I don't even think she's an RN, that I caught in a bunch of lies about my mother falling, which ultimately resulted in her death. I had asked to see the video to see my moms fall and was given the runaround how Jack couldn't find it on the film (what??? Why do you have cameras then?) my mom was in hospice care and did not have a long outlook but this definitely rushed her process along. I could go into many more stories, something that really left a bad taste in my mouth? They sent me a bill after my mom had passed away, keep in mind, this is a 50 bed facility, not a huge corporation! My mom had been gone over five weeks now, I'm still awaiting the refund I was promised three weeks ago, the management doesn't care about their clients whatsoever, it's all about the money, thank goodness for Lorna, Denise and Jacinda!

My folks have lived her 12 years since they were 73 and 76. When they entered they drove, danced,…read moreworked out, took all exercise classes-yoga-tai chi etc, participated in cribbage club, went to gala annually . . . and now 12 years later they still do all of those things. When they were in their 70s looked quite young and we were all concerned that there were a lot of old people! Now that they are in late 80s, they are the common age, and they have lots of friends over 100! Everything is good here: food, service, staff - best thing is that they are safe and on storms and during pandemics the kids don't have to worry at all. They have generators when the power goes out - once we had to go there because they were the only ones with power! During covid Brooksby did a pretty good job at so many things: they went door to door with the first vaccination before anyone was getting out at all. I couldn't visit, but I could bring things to the gate for my folks on designated days. My issues with Brooksby? In addition to the down payment, you pay monthly to get the meals you want (30 a month or more or less) and that amt they originally paid for the 2 of them in a small 2 bed 1.5 bath has almost doubled in 12 years. Not expected. I will say the best, is that when you pull the chord for emergency help - they are there in a heartbeat and the people are wonderful! Also, they hire high schoolers to serve food, and they are always wonderful. I Love that they also give the kids scholarships. Overall great - if you don't mind the money increases.

I had asked my brother-in-law if he would like me to be his advocate. He thought that would be great and appreciated my suggestion. I live on the West Coast and of course Brooksby is on the East Coast. I knew that because of HEPA laws staff are not supposed to talk to family members without written permission or consent form. I called their case manager and my brother-in-law's nurse over 15 times in one week and left voice messages. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK! When I finally reached someone in the administration office, I explained the situation and asked if she would please call me back either way to let me know what's going on. I STILL have not heard from anyone. Although I live 3000 miles away, I am the closest relative that still has cognitive abilities. All three of my younger sisters have Alzheimer's. I was hospitalized with shortness of breath which doctors thought I had a heart attack on top of a bad case of bronchitis. The cardiologist performed a cardiac catheterization and told me that my heart was "great." He asked if I had been under stress and diagnosed me with broken heart syndrome due to the stress I had caused by the total lack of communication between Brooksby regarding my family members and myself. NO ONE YET HAS CALLED ME BACK! It's been about 4-6 weeks. My family pay an exorbitant amount of money and Brooksby cannot return a phone call? Family care is good healthcare. I would not recommend Brooksby to anyone considering putting themselves or a loved one in that facility.

Even if honestly I admit my interests are vested, I will say however, that as an entertainer, in my life experience as a performer in venues such as this, I have never in my 50 or so professional years, had ever been so respected to have been given even 5 engagements in a year much less the 20+ dates that Brookdale assigned me in 2015. I believe this is because they want to make their residents feel as happy and nostalgic as possible. They realize the psychological and emotional value of giving them connection with their past, and particularly for stimulating responsiveness for the memory care patients through the music and humor of their time. They realize it is crucial for their adjustment and peace of mind. Brookdale, then in my mind is an unusually humane outfit wherein they subsidize such programming beyond the extra mile unlike many assisted living communities who do so much less for the spiritual and emotional needs of their clients. -Steve Hershman
