We went here for breakfast and had a large group with reservations. They assigned one waitress to our table of 15. The breakfast buffet was laughable. I couldn't believe the price of the buffet - it was equivalent to a nicer free breakfast you'd get at a hotel. If you're looking for a buffet, look further. I went there tonight for dinner. I ordered French onion soup with chicken, mashed potatoes. Mixed veggies. It was a senior portion. Not sure why but there was a mere dripping of broth over the chicken and French Onion Soup maybe 2 pieces of onion. I don't know how they can call this onion "soup"! Possibly the crock of the soup would have been better?' My friend has the stuffed shells. They weee like rubber and there was very little cheese inside. This restaurant is a hidden gem. 1st time here with friends. Was able to accommodate a large party of 18 after shopping at the outlets. The items on the salad bar are fresh and has many choices. The pepper hash was one of the best i have had in years. The beef vegetable was delicious and had lots of fresh veggies. The lobster bisque had chucks of lobster meat. The service was exceptional. My family went here after my Grandmother's funeral. I ordered a dish that came with the soup and salad bar. I got a salad, roll, ended up giving my roll to my teen daughter. The soup I got wasn't great so I let my son taste it. The waitress comes over to our table saying with an attitude " you're not allowed to share the salad bar and I'm going to have to charge you extra." We just looked at her like . I have no problem following rules but no one told me I couldn't share a roll and no one could taste my soup. That was the only time I went up to the salad bar. One time! So the main course comes out and my ravioli was white on the side and hard. Basically like it was taken out of the freezer and partially cooked. I sent it back and didn't even request another meal because I saw how we were being treated. I didn't want them to bring me back something worse. We were all mourning at the table so I figured it wasn't the place to or time to make a scene, I didn't want my family to feel worse. We enjoy going to this place! They have a fantastic salad bar (pretty much the only one in the Pottstown area) and the salad attendant is very attentive - making sure items are filled or straightened to make it look neat & tidy. I chose one of their specials, Salmon Brookside (salmon with crabmeat stuffing on top). It was delicious & perfectly cooked - so tender and moist. My friend chose the Chicken Croquette dinner, he said it was very tasty and also cooked just right. Our waitress, Dore was very attentive, she held our order so that we had time to eat our salad - so nice they do this! We definitely will be going back. A friendly smiling welcoming face met us as we entered the roadside diner, we were seated promptly and our waitress came to our table side almost immediately. Adjacent tables with local regulars were enjoying lunch on the Tuesday afternoon. Waitresses friendly and busily attending to their needs. Addressing them by name and always with a smile. Our waitress was no different and kept our glasses full and checked on us regularly. The salad bar is one of the freshest I've experienced by far. The soups steaming and flavorful. Probably the best breakfast buffet around. The bacon is a good mix of crispy and non-crispy, the bread pudding is always delicious and the eggs are never runny or cold. It is not 5 stars because when we order off the menu, the food is pretty pedestrian and average diner type fare. Guess it's time I take a break from this restaurant. While the menu food is good enough, the waiter/waitressing is substandard to say the least. My last two visits were disappointing. Brought our food out and never came back once to check on us. Today, after flagging her down and ordering a toasted muffin, waited 10 mins, flagged her down again only to be told that "I'm busy with customers". My thought was "what are we"? We eat out a lot, especially breakfast, but will avoid this place for a while. Oh, and when we went to pay, weren't asked how was everything, which I would have expressed my concerns at that point. Suggestion to the owner, train the staff to understand that when you're nice to customers, you will more than likely get a nicer tip, but when you're "not nice" you don't and explain that you may very well be in the wrong industry. read more

I have had to eat here several times and found the food was under seasoned and starchy. Reminded me of having dinner with my grandma at her nursing home. The soups are horrible. Many sides are canned or reheated from frozen. Always seems to take a long time to be seated even when not busy. The check out person has had some kind of attitude. I went to this restaurant because my favourite breakfast place (Shorty's Sunflower Cafe) was full and I had guests with me. Bad choice... I thought I was going to find a family business restaurant, nice and cozy. The reality was different, it is an old building with a "strange" odor and not enough air circulation. After looking at the menu, we decided to get the buffet. The food was not fresh at all and it looked cheap. Not enough variety and half the trays were empty. I know that sometimes restaurants do not fill the trays when is half hour from lunch to don't waste food, but come on... if you are running a business and offering something, then do it. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody, even in Pottstown there is better places for a good breakfast. read more

Update to my review... apparently after reading what happened the owner contacted me through Yelp to apologize for the misunderstanding . I'm grateful they owned up to their part in it and then got the address for Grandma and sent a card of apology and a gift card to comeback for a second try. I will thank them for that much and for going the extra mile. It will be up to her . For that I will up from one to three stars for an apology. Thank you. Totally outraged!!!! My Mother in law and her husband spent many , many dinners at Brookside. They brought our family and grand kids there. My grandfather passed away several years ago and Grand-mom who is 87 RARELY!!! Goes out to eat and this fall she stopped at your restaurant which is hard enough because she's alone with out Grandpa!! This fall she went at lunch and it was busy and you refused to seat her because she was alone!!! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!!!! Be prepared for a rotten review of your establishment!!!!!! If you're looking for diner food with a great soup and salad bar, this is the place. Nothing special, nothing fancy, just a great place to eat with reasonable prices. Sadly I wanted to love this place but I can't! Our waitress took our drink order and once delivered never came back for refills. Asked for a couple of items such as well done home fries or toast was told I would be charged extra... she never came back with either! I honestly think if it wasn't one of the only places to go, I'd rate Brookside lower. As I said, there isn't much competition in the Pottstown area, so oftentimes you end up at Brookside. The food is okay. The establishment isn't that great - it often smells strange and the floor is dirty, but the staff are super friendly and prices are great. read more

I can only speak to breakfast, as my wife and I come here just about every weekend. The buffet while small in scope, is awesome! It honestly saves us from driving to shady maple because it's so good, (albeit it at the cost of my waistline). Great biscuits and gravy, lots more to choose from. Gave Brookside a shot while in the area after hearing good things about it. The salad bar was plentiful, fresh and was constantly being refilled. The dinner was also good and while I didn't have any, the desserts looked tempting. Will stop by again when in the area, good prices. We have not in here for many years. The salad was amazing for being at a diner. I do think the salad was the best part of our experience though. I had ordered crabcakes and I could not even taste any of the crab. It was all filling. Two people in our party ordered stuffed flounder and there meals could have been hotter. Another ordered veal parm and he really liked his meal. The bill was decently priced for a party of six. This restaurant caters to an older crowd. It is an older crowd that does go there for the most part. I travel all the time, and been to thousands of restaurant's this is Dinner food. If you're looking for upscale food, this is not the place. I liked the chicken casedeos better than tgi Fridays and friendly. I like soup and salad bar and good price even if inflation is the real complaint with the older folks. I usually skip supper. I like lunch and breakfast the best. I guess I always regulate my daily caloric intake to only 1500 per day. I only two meals a day. Three meals makes me overeat. Took my 75 yr old friend for chicken last night. I am a 70 yr old with a gastric bypass, so I can only eat 4 ounces. Guess I should have explained this up front to my waiter, Rob. He had kind eyes, so I didn't expect any trouble. I wanted senior chicken croquettes but they didn't have any, so I got the exact same thing my friend did. I ate my soup, but not my salad and didn't touch my dinner or mashed potatoes....thinking I could bring them home. I made the mistake of putting my untouched salad into my take home container. Oops....wrong...not allowed to do that. I was literally in tears while talking to both the waiter, then the manager. I was told they would be fired if I took my salad bar home. They charged me 3.99 for soup and salad....which was supposed to come with the meal. Then they charged me $2 more....13.95 for my chicken because I didn't specify "senior"....but it was the exact same size as my friends was. I asked them to remove the $2 and was refused that, also. I told them I was a waitress....and I know how this works....and that there would be no tip and no repeat visit if they didn't work with me. They didn't work with me....LOL Going out is a social thing, for me, since 4 mouthfuls fills me up. And when I was a waitress, the customer was always right. I would bend over backwards to help a customer have a successful experience. They did not care. The manager is a beautiful redhead, with a frozen heart. Rob looked kind, but really wasn't...it's funny because my husband got there late, and said that he was acting like a jerk, but I was still blindsided. I had my gastric bypass in 2005 and rarely have a problem ordering and taking food home. Most places let me order from the childrens menu. Needless to say, we won't be going back. Its a diner and certainly not a good one. Its cheap, the food clearly comes out of boxes, cans and bags... every single item we ordered looked like someone didn't just microwave it and put it on a plate. The salad bar is cheap... iceberg lettuce, minimal fresh vegetables, mayo based salads and dressings and imitation bacon bits. The soup was just re-heated from some restuarant supply company and dinner was basic hospital food. The place is however packed - they have a very active senior crowd - I am guessing this is how they stay in business... if they don't start to think fresh eventually they won't have any customers left. read more
