We wound up here solely because MadJack's was closed from the snow storm. The BBQ was the weirdest consistency I have ever seen. It looked like tomato purée seriously diluted and didn't taste like much of anything. The smoked turkey and brisket were moist and tender but not flavorful. The smoked sausage was not smoked at all. Or if it was, it had been sitting in some liquid for awhile because the casing had ZERO snap to it. Based off the looks of the owner and his employees, it is clear that they weren't expecting the crowd they received because of the other business being closed; the owner looked frazzled as people were ordering and the cashier (his daughter) was running around trying to make sure things were stocked. Overall, the food wasn't horrible, but it wasn't memorable and definitely not worthy of the $33 we paid for 2 entrees, side of sausage and one soft drink. read more

We went around 2 on a Monday. We walked in and it was empty and the reviews on here scared us but we decided to be brave. Ok honestly glad we did. We were waiting out the rain storm and the food helped pass the time! The waitress was really nice and brought us our drinks and food pretty quick. I had the catfish dinner. I'm from Texas and making fried catfish was the first thing I learned so I know a good catfish. It was very good! I had the onion rings and Mac and cheese for my sides. Onion rings were good and Mac and cheese was decent. My husband had the beef slide sandwich. He says it was good but was certainly nothing compared to Texas BBQ. Honestly the food was good. Don't come here expecting Texas BBQ cause you'll be disappointed. It's New Mexico so you can't expect glorious BBQ here. read more

We were headed to the other BBQ place down the road after hiking but they were sold out of everything so we walked a few businesses over to this place. Great food, their barbecue sauce is a secret recipe. The ambience was a little off because there was no music and it was pretty quiet. I'd like to have had a little music. Lets start with the poor customer service, standing right at the counter while who i believe to be the owner just walk right past us to go talk to a friend in a booth. I ordered a half rack of baby back ribs that tasted like a bon fire smells & were half cold, my wife ordered a loaded baked potato that comes with sour cream & butter with pulled pork & cheese, first off the cheese on top was cold & not melted at all then the handed her a single serve packet of sour cream & a square of butter on the side then they have the nerve to charge me $21 for what im going to call low quality left overs. Don't bother. There was a time I would have picked this place over the more popular neighbor "Mad Jack's". The food has taken a major dive since we frequented here a few years back but more surprisingly, the service was crap on this visit. They drenched my brisket sandwich in sauce and served it in a basket so it was sitting in sauce. When the mushy bread grossed me out my husband asked for another bottom bun and was refused. They instead offered him a piece of hard Texas toast. I don't know how much a bun costs but I'm sure it's less than what they'll lose by not having us or any of our 40 or so family members that come to visit a couple times a year eat there ever again. read more

Like the previous poster said, this place is a nice alternative if you don't want to wait the 1-2 hours to get Mad Jack's. Of course the question is : is it on the same level as Mad Jack's? No, it's not. But who is? That being said, it was very good and had a much quieter atmosphere, which was nice. The brisket is solid. We are new to the area and decided to take a motorcycle ride up to the mountains. We stopped here because we both decided chicken strips sounded good for lunch. The place is cute- they try real hard to make it a hillbilly place. The waitress was very nice and friendly. The chicken strips were delicious. Obviously frozen, then fried, but very good with just a little bit of spice. The corn on the cob had possibly been frozen too and the green beans were canned. Don't expect gourmet food here, but for a couple bucks it's a decent chicken basket. read more

I googled for restaurants along my son's drive from Phoenix to Lubbock. He was especially interested in a good BBQ. I saw a good review for the Texas Pit (????), and passed it to him. My husband is from Texas and we thought this restaurant had Texas Bar-b-que! We had to try it because of the advertising Well, it turns out they are not from Texas and the bar-bque is tasteless.I think we ate bland pot roast with very little flavor. I had an iceberg salad with a few sprinkles of cheese and a couple of tomatoes, with a few cubed pieces of ham. We were very disappointed and we would not go back, and would advice our friends not to go. Maybe try Old Town Cloudcroft for a meal? That is what we will do next time! read more

I happened to be driving by and my BBQ addiction got the better of me so I had to stop and grab a little something for lunch. I decided to get some brisket (which I guess is what they have listed as "sliced beef') and sausage to go. The sliced beef was fairly dry but had a nice smoke flavor. It wasn't the normal BBQ smoke flavor but it was nice, it was almost a grilled/bbq'd meat flavor, but it was good and I like when people have unique flavors. The sausage also had a unique flavor. It reminded me of my uncle's butcher shop from when I was a kid and I liked it. The smoke flavor was very present but not overly strong. Unfortunately I think it was store bought kielbasa (seems to be common around this area) but the smoke flavor made it good. They also gave me a tub of their "famous" bbq sauce. The sauce was good and much like BBQ sauce should be (in my opinion). It is thick and hearty, with a good tomato base and nice flavor, with just a touch of heat. Unfortunately it seemed like a churched-up version of a store bought BBQ sauce I've had before. Don't get me wrong it is still good but tastes a little commercial. I am going to have to go back and try the rest of their food, especially all the fried stuff, since the owners are from Alabama. read more

I'm not sure if I can put into words how bad this place was. The food was bad. Barely edible. Paid nearly forty dollars for 3 plates of food that we ended up throwing out most of because it was so bad. In line to get the food one of the employees who was serving the food was rude to another employee right in front of us. The guys serving had beards without any type of netting to cover their beards which was off putting. The tables were dirty, no lids for the sodas. The worst of all was that the women's bathroom was filthy. The only nice thing I can say is that the potato salad was actually pretty good and the decor was cute. Otherwise I will never return. I think I saw a for sale sign and hope someone comes in to the revamp the place. read more

I had the chicken dinner with 2 sides and Texas toast, my 2 sides were corn on the cob and potato salad. The portions were large, the corn on the cob was great, not mushy like a lot of them are. I don't normally eat BBQ sauce but their sauce is so good, a little tangy, really tasty, I ate all the sauce. Even the potato salad was fresh and flavorful. The chicken was tender, not at all dry. Came through town to eat at Mad Jacks but it was closed so we decided to give this place a chance. The prices were not bad. I had the brisket plate and the meat was really dried out. Most of it was like chewing on beef jerky with bbq sauce on it. The wife had the 1/2 chicken plate and it was the same way. She had to constantly fill her tea glass up because the meat was really dry. The chili though was actually pretty good. All in all we would not come back here again. But maybe it was a slow day and they were just getting ride of some of the bbq they cooked a couple of days ago. Really let down by this place being a Texas boy myself. read more

Stopped in over Labor Day weekend; this place was insanely packed which we took as a good sign. The waiting in line was long because the BBQ man is the only one who handles the 'que. I think if they work out a better system or add people to the line on crowded days like holiday weekends, it would make things less stressful. Sadly, they were out of chili! We got fried okra and fries which came out piping hot. But let's get to the "meat" of it. We got the sliced brisket, turkey, sausage and pulled pork. I'm not a big fan of the sauce drenching everything and next time I'll know to ask for mine on the side. Everything was SO good. Even my picky eaters devoured their meat. Only thing I would have asked another of had it not seemed busy and stressful for the workers was the loaded baked potato. Half the potato could not be eaten because it was so undercooked. Will visit again and someone will get the potato again so we can add another star I hope! read more

Stopped in basically b/c there was an Alabama flag outside the building. Being from Alabama I just knew this was going to be a friendly, down home BBQ place. WRONG I have 5 kids ages range from 11 to twin 2 yr olds. The waitress (also part owner) was NOT friendly, never refilled any of our drinks. Everyone in the place was looking at me funny (i guess b/c of all the kids). The prices were way to high and the food was not the best. I am an ex restaurant manager and I have to say this was the worst service I have had in a long time. Please take down the Alabama signs and flags you are embarrassing! Oh and I guess they live upstairs b/c the whole time we were there trying to eat, there was multiple people walking up and down the stairs. I felt like we were in there living room! read more

They've got some rough reviews, but the other bbq place in Cloudcroft (Mad Jack's) was sold out when I got there at 3:30 in the afternoon (I've read that that's very common with them and is an "artificial scarcity" thing they do to keep the customers thinking it's incredible--it might be, but damned if I'm going to try 'em again). This place has pretty brisket and beef ribs (all we tried), and the sides were very good. I'm from central texas and this isn't really like the bbq I'm used to, which is smokier and saltier, and i'm not a fan of them putting the sauce on for you after they slice the meat (that's seems an eastern thing to me, like bbq I had in memphis). The owner was a complete jackass. I asked for half a pound of turkey to go, plain and simple. He puts it on the to-go box and then proceeds to drown the turkey with sauce. Politely I said, "sorry, I didn't want sauce." He then stares at me with a blank face, like I'm the one to blame. He angrily throws away the food and starts rambling saying "alright let's get you want you want then, what do you want!?" he yelled. I was dumbfounded. Horrible customer service. I kick myself for even apologizing to the man. I don't know if it was a race thing given that I am Hispanic, or if he is genuinely a jerk. I will never give business to this restaurant ever again. The okra is amazing! Some of the best I have had: Extra crispy center on the ouside and tender on the inside. Not mushy at all :)
