The runner guy who got us a menu and ran the food was awesome, he was working hard getting everyone what they needed. I tried the Mayton burger which is basically a bacon cheeseburger on texas toast + fries. It was fantastic - great grill flavor. It definitely is a bit hard to get in and out as it sits right on the highway, but it is worth the diversion! Great old school place. read more

Came here upon the recommendation of staff from the hotel we were staying at for a local eatery. They recommended this drive in. Now, I've never been to a drive in before so it was really a novel and fun experiences. They come up to your car and take your order and deliver the food to your car. Had the enchiladas that was touted on the menu as "REALLY GOOD". And yup, they were really good. My sister had the chicken tacos with the crunchy shells. Tasty as well. For starters... I am a bougie lil' tourist from the East Coast--not a local. That being said... on Sunday, good luck finding anything open in Alamogordo, NM. In fact, good luck finding many things open in the great state of New Mexico on any given day, except for the cannabis shops conveniently located approximately every 25 feet. Hi-D-Ho Drive-In is open on Sunday evenings, should one not be able to find much open in Alamogordo. To be fair--the food was relatively mediocre and affordable. The tacos tasted like nothing-special tacos, and the enchilada tasted like a nothing-special enchilada. Service was good. The lady taking orders and running food was really great. Ambiance was charming. Burgers smelled amazing. It was a really great experience that I appreciate having had. Then I went inside to pay. And oh lord... oh dear, sweet, benevolent lord... this place is filthier than the filthiest punk-rock squat I have ever stepped foot in. Holes in the floor stuffed with cardboard and covered with a mat? Oh yeah--right in front of the register. You can't miss it! Cabinets that appear to be rotting (or was that mold? Or was it just caked grease?!) from the bottom up? You're darn tootin'! Every single surface covered in clutter and caked in grease? You betcha! That's just the stuff that stuck out. But that's also like being able to describe a fire engine-red loveseat in a landfill and not really recalling all of the other horrors. This place was disgusting! Like... the background of one of those humanitarian aid commercials, all rolled into one tiny little kitchen counter area. Now... to this place's credit. No one got sick, ill, had any stomach issues, or even got indigestion--which is more than I can say about the A sanitation score place down the road from me at home. So, I refuse to claim that the food isn't stored correctly, prepared correctly, or otherwise contaminated. In fact, I am really impressed that the food that came from the Hi-D-Ho kitchen, that I put into my body, did not kill or harm me, but in fact nourished and comforted me. So... I would never go here again knowing what I know now. If I still lived in ignorant bliss and returned, I'd get the burger (smelled amazing). And whatever you do... don't go inside. If you do go inside, wait until after you've eaten, then go inside. If you then go inside, take off your shoes and turn your socks into a blindfold. Stumble your way up to the register, conclude your transaction, then feel your way out and put your socks back on. Better yet, just stay in your car. Get your food carried up, give them your form of payment, have them run it inside for you--but DO NOT GO IN! read more

We gave this place a try based on the number of cars we saw there at 2:30 in the afternoon and also because of the good YELP reviews. We waited a bit for our order, but they were very busy at the time. Let me tell you--it was WELL WORTH the wait. The burger meat was fresh and tasty and the burgers were huge. I ordered the Tiger Burger based on reviews and it was way more than I could eat--but I tried because it was so delicious. My tater tots were crisp and tasty and so were the fries. My husband got the Burger Basket and that was just right--the Burger was large, thick, and tasty. I fully understand why their parking lot was full. Popular burger joint that is known for the "Tiger Burger", a double patty burger. A friend had recommended this place and a friend and I came here after visiting White Sands National Park. You take a seat at the outdoor table (no indoor seating) or in your car, and someone comes out to take your order. Note that the food is made to order, so it does take about 20 minutes for your order to come out. Credit cards accepted. I wanted to like this place, but found the food to be a bit lacking. While the service was very friendly and polite, the burger patty was so dry and tasteless. The fries were underseasoned, though the texture was solid. I had the Mayton which came in Texas toast while my friend had the cheeseburger with green chiles added. Travelling through town, we wanted to stop for a meal where we could sit out with the dogs. Trip advisor showed only three with outdoor seating, so we tried this place. Yes, it looks like a dive, but the food is very good and SUPER affordable. I know they are known for burgers, but I wanted something different (had a killer Green Chile Cheeseburger at Chala the day before in Mesilia). The very nice waitress told us the red chile on the Enchiladas was good, so I tried that with meat (beef) and an egg on top. HUGE portion, very good Enchilada with a lovely red chile that had perfect heat. My wife had a Taco Salad with chicken, also a huge portion, and quite good. The price for two meals and two drinks was $23, which, these days, is amazing. The food is cooked to order, and all the ingredients are fresh. Service was great: you can only eat on the outdoor patio or in your car. Came for the burger with some green chilies and it was so good! It's very rare when I want to eat a burger and I never had one with Texas toast, grilled pineapple and roasted green chilies! I came around 1:30 waited about an hour and they had plenty of warning signs letting you know that this isn't a fast food joint! They have car service, outdoor seating and call-in ordered. The location isn't very appeasing but it's a hamburger joint what did I except. Make sure you get the strawberry shake or else you will regret it! We were recommended some other places from our hotel worker but when we were driving to those places we noticed a lot of cars here. It had old drive in vibes so we decided to pull in and give it a try. Being from out of town, we didn't know how to order. We walked inside the door and the server immediately handed us menus and said to have a seat outside and she would be with us shortly. She arrived promptly and took our order. We went for the burger combos. We got a hamburger and the Mayton burger and added green chilis. The food did take a bit to come out but the weather was nice so we just enjoyed our conversation and sitting outside. They brought the food to the table in paper bags along with our drinks. The fries were tasty and there were a lot of them. Wow! Yum. The burgers were great especially with that green chili. They were large and moist and for me that buttery Texas toast made it even better. Service was prompt and easy. Yes...we waited a bit longer than we are used to but that is just fine when you know they are making it all to order. It was a great find for our family and we will put it on our list when we travel through again. read more

Hamburgers were good, but then we went to the restroom in the back - it was not clean at all and even the entrance into the back was pretty disgusting. They need a deep cleaning in that back area I'm glad we had already eaten our burgers or else I'm not sure I would have eaten my food after going to the restroom. read more

I can't speak to burgers but this place was pretty horrible for Mexican food. We ordered 3 separate dishes and all 3 were terrible. My husband was hungry but the burrito was so bad that he wouldn't finish it. I'm pretty sure my enchiladas were served in tomato paste. They took canned beans and called them refried beans. The flautas were probably from the frozen section of the grocery store.  Despite advertising as a fast food place, it took a long time to get our food, and there was no place to eat except outdoors where it was cold. read more

We had tried this place a couple of years ago, and I was not impressed with their Mexican food. I mean, they spell ¨chile¨, either ¨chilie¨or ¨chili¨, so that should give you an idea. This time, I was craving a fresh homestyle burger, so decided to give this place another try. I got the mushroom swiss burger, added bacon to it, and it was REALLY good! The bacon was decently thick, not the cheapo premade paper thin stuff. The fries were nice and crunchy, but were not salted and were the thick type of fries, so they were bland, and really dry and starchy. This is a DRIVE-IN. It's a 50s style drive-in (someone on here related it to an 80s drive-in... uhm... ok,... maybe that's a typo, because Drive-Ins started in the 50s, NOT the 80s, lol. For instance, Sonic Drive-In was started in 1953). And like a 50s style drive-in, you order from your car. We were there during the lunch hour, so it was pretty busy. It might've taken 30 mins for our food? NOTE: This is NOT fast food. They have signs all over the place that their food is NOT fast. Do not expect to get your food within 5 mins. It is cooked to order, they are very popular and VERY busy with both drive-in orders and phone orders (maybe call ahead of time, if time is an issue for you?). So expect a wait. When we pulled up we realized it was a "stay" in your car type eatery but they do have covered outdoor sitting. The server came to our van and took our order. They are spose to be famous for their burger. We did order the burger and it was good but if this is the best of the best in the state then I need to open a burger joint! One of the locals recommended this place so I stopped by on the way out of town. The building looks like a sonic type set up where a waiter comes out to take your order. That wasn't the case. After a long wait I had to go in twice before someone came out to take my order. After that I waited an additional 15 minutes for my burger to arrive. I didn't mind because I figured they had to make everything fresh there. Boy was I wrong. When the food finally arrived the patties were cool, dry, and extremely over cooked. It clearly had been sitting under a heat lamp for a very long time. I took a few bites and then threw it back in the bag. The fries also were garbage and I couldn't eat those either. If I had more time I would've asked for a refund but just left disappointed instead since I had to get back on the road. This is a really cool establishment. Sitting outdoors, patrons were enjoying their meals and then we rolled up., 17 of us rolled up on our bikes. We saw big eyes and then heavy movement!! It took awhile but when the food came out.........BERY GOOD. We'll, mine was. I chose tacos and most everyone else had burgers. They did look good! Smelled terrific! This your typical drive up burger joint but it appears family owned. Lots of shade to keep you out of the sun. Kids running it are doing a great job. Only complaint from some of our group, food took a really long time and didn't come out together, or close together. First people to get their meal finished when I got my order. 20 minutes later, the burgers started coming out. I was the last one to order. These are notes provided by those in attendance. Absolutely do not recommend this place due to the portions. First time eating at this facility, and I will not be going back. Ordered a chicken salad and ended up with a bowl full of quite the low grade vegetables (just a couple of sliced tomatoes and dry cabbage). To top it off there was an unacceptable amount of protein (chicken) in the CHICKEN salad. I'd say at best 2oz of chicken in my bowl. Definitely not worth $16 for a bowl of cabbage. No drink or sides included. I'm leaving two stars as the chicken was decent, but I cannot speak for the rest of the menu.
