Dinner Plate: Salmon, Truffle-Parm Tots, Veggie Blend, Mini Chowdah with Gingerade
    Martha N.

Decent place to get a casual lunch. I walked in when they opened and they were having a work huddle, but they made sure to take care of me right away. Btw, the part of the huddle I could hear had many words of encouragement to the staff and I loved all the positivity. It was my first time there and they gave me the low down on what to do. So, you get a laminated menu and dry erase marker then mark your order. Give the menu to the cashier and then pay. They were great about answering questions about the menu and giving recommendations. I ordered the dinner plate, which included a large portion of protein, garlic bread, and two sides. I didn't want the garlic bread because I was ordering tator tots, so in lieu of it, I was able to substitute the veggie blend for a little up charge. (I needed to balance the tator tots and chowdah haha) I also got the gingerade, which was very refreshing. The salmon was slightly over cooked, the veggie blend blend consisted of some green beans with mixed salad greens (meh), tator tots were crispy with a slight taste of truffle and topped with Parmesan, and the chowdah had a good amount of fish to potato ratio. Everything was palatable. Overall: I think it's a nice place to grab a casual healthy-ish lunch if you are in the area. The food was mediocre, but the service was great.

Curry Fish Cakes with Greens and Grains
    Linh Q.

Curry Fish Cakes with Greens and Grains was probably my most well balanced meal in a long time. Some fried, some greens, some creamy sauce, some complex carbs. The fish cake itself wasn't strong in curry flavor but a drizzle of the creamy curry sauce did the trick. The greens was a combo of green beans, broccoli, spinach and the grains were a blend of brown rice, quinoa, and wheatberry! Why is this important? Texture baby! And probably a boatload of nutrition. It also came with a tangy white sauce that I'm not sure what I was supposed to do with it but I drizzled it over my greens and grains and devoured it. No regrets! Now the hubs got the CLT (Cod Lettuce Tomato) and the lettuce is always greener on the other side. This was no exception. Fish and French fries fried to perfection. Crispy in the outside and tender on the inside (fish and fries)! It is a seasonal item so if this sounds good to you...better not wait too long.

I'll give them two stars for the shrimp and sauces alone. The three sauces they offer are great. The grilled shrimp was great. Everything else was awful. Whatever they wanted to call the vegetable was inedible. The garlic bread was rock hard. The truffle tots were basic tots with huge chunks of Parmesan. Just not good.

Daily Catch whitefish with the fixings! Fresh & Delicious.
    Blake L.

I really enjoyed the daily catch meal today! It was whitefish and for the sides I went with tots and the lime cilantro coleslaw. There was also some salad added. I would definitely order this again or try like the cod. Overall the quality of the meal was even better than I imagined and it was fresh and plentiful amount of food. This is why the company is expanding locally!

    Salmon bowl
    Andrea M.

Overpriced. The keto salmon bowl was lettuce w salon on it for $21.50. Cold unseasoned broccoli came with it on the side. The dressing was tasteless and just oily. The salmon portion was decent but would have expected some more veggies and more flavor for the $ - it was basically salmon and mixed greens. Even the garlic bread (came with the other meal we ordered - not the salmon bowl) tasted just oily not really garlicky... Would not repeat

It opened as a…read morepartnership between Miami Beach's iconic Joe's Stone Crab and Lettuce Entertain You, bringing South Florida to Grand and Rush. I first went when it was still a huge, buzzy Chicago spot, and one of my most memorable dinners came after my high school graduation in 2003. I even got a speeding ticket on Lake Shore Drive with my grandmother in the back seat on the way to dinner, which still makes me laugh. Chicago was an especially fun place for Joe's to arrive. Open outcry trading was still a force, and the wealth creation around it was wild: people who had dropped out of high school could become millionaires in their twenties, while math PhDs from the University of Chicago could make fortunes in the same ecosystem. It was a golden era for hustle culture, when commerce idolized Tony Montana in a way that today is more likely to idolize Jamie Dimon or David Solomon. Death Row and Bad Boy ruled the airwaves, while Michael, Shaq, Kobe, and Allen Iverson defined the NBA. Basketball was so dominant in Chicago culture during my coming of age that I still map other things, including restaurants, to NBA teams. Joe's felt like the Miami Heat coming to Chicago in much the same way Smith & Wollensky represented the New York Knicks: each brought a recognizable piece of its hometown culture into another major city. Joe's brought real South Florida sizzle to Chicago, and it landed at exactly the right moment. Going there felt like an occasion. Florida took longer for me to understand in full. My family has roots in the state going back decades, farther north along the Atlantic coast, and I didn't visit Miami until March 2007, when my sister started graduate school in Coral Gables. That trip began my love affair with Miami and helped me understand why the original Joe's was such an institution. A close family friend's father spent time around Miami in the 1960s and 1970s. He knew local fishermen who caught stone crabs, which gave me an appreciation for the older South Florida culture around the food, separate from Joe's own history. Another Joe's memory captures an entirely different moment. Looking through my OpenTable history, my July 31, 2008 reservation at Joe's in Chicago is the earliest reservation I can find at a restaurant that is still open today. I was 23, working at UBS, preparing to move to New York while the firm was already on fire from its mortgage losses, and Lehman would file for bankruptcy just weeks later. I was broke but wildly aspirational, dreaming about dinners at Balthazar, begging my way past the doors at Cain and Tenjune, hoping to drink for free, and trying to meet women comically far out of my league. Through all of those memories, the restaurant itself has been remarkably consistent. The stone crab claws are incredible, the seafood is excellent, and Joe's holds its own among Chicago's serious steakhouses. The room has traditionally felt a little more formal than Miami, with bow ties, polished service, and a darker old-school steakhouse rhythm, while still being genuinely welcoming. Finish with the key lime pie. Years later, my wife and I held our wedding reception at RPM Seafood, another Lettuce restaurant, then ate at the original Joe's during our honeymoon in Miami during COVID days later, which felt like a fitting circle back. In sheer range of venues, repeatability of quality and atmosphere, and consistency of hits, Lettuce is the gold standard in Chicago, with some of that same reach in Vegas and DC. I've been extraordinarily privileged in my exposure to hospitality, and I still repeatedly admire Rich Melman's model, taste, and execution, now carried forward by the next generation of the family. Joe's is a prime example: world-class, durable, unmistakably Chicago, and absolutely somewhere I want to return next time I'm in town with some dough to spend. While Joe's may not be French, this place still earns my highest marks: très bien!

Since then, I've had crab cakes all over the U.S. and Hugo's remained my gold standard. Tonight, 12 years later, we returned to Hugo's on Rush Street downtown Chicago. We had a 6 pm reservation on a Monday night. We were given the option to eat in the special Elevator Car, so we chose it. It was a bit tight getting into the bench seating but once in, we were quite comfortable and it was really quaint. I'm glad we chose it. Our server tonight was Stephanie O and she was amazing. So knowledgeable, so pleasant and very accommodating. We told Stephanie we planned to take it a bit slow, starting with cocktails. She took our cocktail orders and we took our time enjoying them, admiring our special Elevator Car and pondering dinner options. Of course, a Crab Cake was definitely happening! Stephanie checked in with us from time to time and when we were ready, we asked her to drop a Crab Cake order. Oh my - it was amazing, just like the last time! Just enough breadcrumbs in it to hold it together. Baked, then seared on both sides on the flat top and served with their house made remoulade. For us, this menu item and a service as great as it was from Stephanie and the rest of the team was enough of a reason to come to Hugo's. After we'd finished sharing the Crab Cake, Stephanie stopped by with the fresh fish options platter to explain each one to us, how it would be prepared and what it would be like. We nearly went for the Snapper but dropped back to our original thought of trying their Shrimp De Jonghe along with a dinner salad. So glad we did as the Shrimp De Jonghe was really tasty and just enough food. The salad and shrimp meal were both kitchen-split for us. Nice touch - thanks team! I have to add that we've had Shrimp De Jonghe somewhere else and we recall it as not being as good as Hugo's. I like how their breadcrumb on the shrimp here was less a breading and more of a dusting. I'd like to mention the rest of the staff we saw in action. The hostesses were quite pleasant, found our reservation and seated us with pleasure. The table team from the water guy, to him and others clearing completed items was excellent. The chef or one of the cooks brought out our split Shrimp De Jonghe. That was a nice touch. And of course our server Stephanie - amazing. Great meal tonight at Hugo's and over the top service from everyone. We will be back - maybe even this week.

Available only in the bar area, we were able to find a table for two inside by the windows, in spite of it being very packed. Our server was quick to approach our table, even though hubs had wandered over to the bar to order. After I summoned him back, we ordered a couple of Stellas, a Filet Slider and Baked Goat Cheese; each item was $5 on the HH menu. A few minutes later, Hubs waved over our server again to order 4 oysters, which were BOGO during HH. Upon her suggestion, he chose the smaller East Coast oysters. He told me they were really good and he was happy with his choice. I had two good bites of the filet slider & was delighted at how delicious it was. The piece of meat was quite large, especially for $5! Thick & juicy, it was cooked perfectly medium rare. The slider was plated with lots of crispy string fries that were very tasty. Our other app, the baked goat cheese, was served atop a skillet of tomato sauce with four pieces of toasted bread. This was also a delicious plate. Service was very on-point, and we never felt rushed, even after Happy Hour ended. At some point, the pianist arrived & we enjoyed a rousing selection of yacht rock tunes as we finished our beers. My favorite piece of ambiance was the steampunk-powered ceiling fans, even though they probably did very little to circulate the air. The decor was vintage travel, which I loved! I'll definitely return to Hugo's again, at least for Happy Hour, the next time I'm in Chicago's Gold Coast area.
