I have heard some recommendations about this restaurant and I loved their food!!! Their pancake, home fries, tofu, fried egg, and drinks are amazing!!! The waiters did an amazing job and got our order correctly. They were super friendly with us and checked on us to make sure we are all good. They set up the tables a bit more than 6 feet away from each other which is I like it a lot. We went on a Sunday and there was live music near the bar and that was such a nice touch :) I tried the turkey club with french fries - the pepper aioli had a kick to it - absolutely DELICIOUS!! and the french fries had amazing texture :) My friend had the veggie frittata that came with the home fries + fresh fruit. I personally liked the french fries more than the tater tots (more potato, less crunch), but the fresh fruit had berries, pineapple, melon and grapes! To drink, I had a hot vanilla latte - so good! Like every weekend looking for a brunch spot in Rochester is a total mission. Well this past weekend while searching for a place I came across this hidden gem. It is inside the art memorial gallery. They have their own entrance in the back but you can also get to the restaurant through the front entrance (university). Since we randomly found it we did not know that you needed a reservation. Lucky we were able to get a table with just a 20 min wait. I did notice they had live music not sure if it's all day. We did check out their menu while waiting and they have a lot of delicious plates that are a must try. My group and I decided to get the family pack which consisted of 5 different plates. It said that it feeds 4 people but to be honest it could probably feed about 6! It was ALOT of yummy food and the price was amazing very reasonable. We also ordered the unlimited mimosas and tequila sunrise again the prices were very reasonable. There is only one con about this whole experience. I feel like it was missing more music. Went to the brown hound for brunch and it was great! The atmosphere is really cool (it's in a museum)! The wait staff were working so hard - they were a little slammed but they still did a great job. They have a huge variety of non alcoholic and alcoholic drinks and they are great. I got the watermelon and pork belly salad and it was so good! they added some fresh basil and mint in there with some spiced almonds and an asian vinaigrette. I had to write an update after yet again, another magnificent brunch at Brown Hound. We went during the Warhol exihibit and got to see some cool colorful work! I suggest making reservations as the number of tables has definitely been pared down. As efficient as the service was, it was maybe a little too attentive. Instead of one server checking on us, there were multiple who seemed to not communicate with each other at all, so they were coming over literally every 10 mins, asking the same questions. The main reason we went here was I was craving a good bloody mary and Brown Hound did not disappoint. I got mine with all the fixins (which was really only two olives) and got an add on of bacon. Guys, get the add on bacon if you're into that!! It was soooo good. The bloody mary was just a tad spicy with all the flavors I was craving, yum!! For entrees I got the stuffed french toast. It was stuffed with a creamy custard(??) or cream cheese (??) not sure, and also berry compote. This was absolutely delicious!!! The outside was so crisp and yet the inside was soft and warm. The fillings blended well together to create tart richness. It doesn't look it but it was so filling. My bf got some kind of beef hash dish. It was also very yummy. It's located in(out)side of the Memorial Art Museum so we accidentally passed it up once trying to find it. This was my first time here & I loved it! I ordered the biscuits and gravy which was was on special and my friend ordered the chicken and waffles directly from the menu. Delicious! I have no complaints -- the chicken was dark meat which isn't my favorite but I stand by the no complaints statement. It was also just beautiful. I went during the holiday season and there was a piano player playing holiday music & it was just beautiful! Maybe there's a daily piano player but who knows?! We ordered the chicken sandwich and it was never explained it what chicken thigh (dark meat) and not breast. Everyone do not like dark meat and we requested something different from the menu and it seemed it was a problem Neve mind the fact we waited a long time for the origin order. It seems if you are not completely happy with whatever they bring you there is a shift in attitude and service I asked for our check and we had to wait while the server/waiter was at the bar conversating with other workers and then he only brought a bag and no check! What a nice place to go to for a weekend brunch! Have been meaning to check out this place in a while so decided to go with a girlfriend on a chill Saturday and then go to the MAG right after. We were seated right away and had made a reservation but it wasn't needed. The ambience is just perfect overlooking the front part of the art gallery. We were told they had some new menu options by the waitress. My friend went with their fabulous granola and I decided on the green eggs and country ham entree on a brioche bun. I also went with the waitress's recommendation of an amaretto latte and my friend had their regular coffee. The cups for the coffee were huge and I had to ask the waitress if the amaretto was real liquor because that's how good it was. We didn't have to wait long for our food to come out. The green eggs and ham sandwich was delicious; eggs were nice and fluffy, the brioche bun was warm and moist and the pesto made it just melt in your mouth. I also liked that the home fries were crispy with red skin potatoes, just the way I like it! I was also so happy to bring home leftovers as it was filling. Many people look forward to Sunday Brunch on a Hallmark Holiday. Mother's Day is no exception. We had reservations for eight Sunday morning. Upon arrival, we paid upfront. Additional charges for drinks was paid after the meal. We were seated promptly, the service was good, but the rest of the experience was ho-hum. The regular restaurant is rather small, almost intimate. We were looking forward to that atmosphere. It was a big event so they put extra tables in the Art Gallery auditorium. There was plenty of space and room between the tables but no decorations. Nothing indicating Mother's Day. We were in a beautiful art gallery with wonderful space and they put the extra seating in an auditorium? It was more like going to a high school dance. The food was buffet style but with no imagination. Scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, French toast, roast turkey and stuffing (really?), prime rib. Where were the Eggs Benedict, the elaborate salads and other hot carving stations? Where were the fresh omelets and elaborate desserts? Where was the creativity and Hallmark holiday flair? As far as the Bistro/Counter service downstairs, I'm sold. I love the idea of having this food and drink option here at the gallery. As of late, I've been taking a student to lessons at the gallery on Thursday nights. I sit and do work in the atrium area, and after the lesson, my student and I have been grabbing a snack and talking art. and homework. and English development. and.... well you get the point. On my first visit, I really enjoyed the "Chicken French Soup." It was creamy and wonderful and full of artichokes. Honestly, I am surprised I'd never heard of this variation on chicken soup before. Fantastic idea, and the taste matches. They also carry local kombucha, so I have been indulging in those as of late. Pastries here are also quite good. I had a ginger muffin and it was still warm last Thursday. The cheesecake gave my student the giggles because it was so tasty! I mean, what more can you ask for? My only complaint... there's not enough seating. We've been lucky to grab a spot out of the main traffic, but it's too bad there couldn't be more seating. read more

Disappointed on Father's Day - they had seated two large tables and there would be a wait. It happens, but here's the thing, we had a reservation, it was Father's Day brunch time, literally no other place for us to go so unfortunately telling us wouldn't change where we were eating. If taking two large tables means the kitchen can't keep up, probably should have limited reservations. Waited over an hour for our food. Fried chicken and waffles; the chicken had no seasoning and it looks like they use dark meat for their chicken dishes which is definitely not a favorite and contributed to the greasy taste (same with the chicken salad sandwich - that was a warm sandwich). We shared our son did not like the chicken and asked for something else (we still paid for it). I asked for an ala cart waffle and side of bacon, I was told it would probably be at the back of the pile. I think she saw my face after we waited over an hour for our food to begin with and she went back to the kitchen to see what she could do. The waffle is incredibly sweet, don't make the same mistake we did by pouring syrup on it, became almost inedible, like eating a powdered sugar cake with syrup. Pork belly wasn't very good, options on menu were limited and not well executed overall, missing seasoning or overly sweet and coffee didn't hit the spot, too weak, barely a taste, and I was charged for 2 - would have been nice to know it was a per charge. Also, they automatically add 18% tip for table of 4 or more as opposed to 6/8 as most restaurants do. The live music was nice, that's about it. Likely won't be back. read more

Brown Hound is lovely in so many ways. We went for Sunday brunch (we had made reservations and were seated immediately - though it didn't seem like it was super busy). The atmosphere was honestly kind of magical. The art gallery setting, the windows letting in so much natural light, a little snow falling outside, and the sweet tunes of a lovely jazz guitarist. Mmmh. Coffee is served in very tall mugs, and teas are brought over in wooden boxes for you to choose from. Their menu is small and I believe it rotates seasonally. However, the menu is the main reason this review gets 4 stars and not 5 from me. There are veryyyy few vegetarian options! Plus, there had to have been at least 6 daily specials that our server mentioned to us, and not a single one was vegetarian. So, for a party of 3 vegetarians, it was a little disappointing that our options were so limited. Alas, we did have some things to choose from, and they really were very delicious. I chose the handmade potato pierogis and they did NOT disappoint. They came smothered in red cabbage and the flavors were so warm and comforting. It came with a side of honeycrisp applesauce which added such a cool and sweet bite to the pierogis. I loved that dish and would highly recommend trying it when you go! It came with 4 or 5 pierogis, so it could work nicely as an appetizer if it's something everybody wanted to try. Service was pretty good, though it took a bizarrely long amount of time to actually receive our check after requesting it. Not a big deal, just a little strange. Overall, it was a delicious meal and a very nice way to spend an afternoon, though the limited veggie options would probably keep me from returning again! read more

This is my new favorite brunch place! The location inside of the MAG is beautiful and nice and quiet, unlike other Rochester-area brunch places I've tried. My friends and I enjoyed a really great meal for a great price. I ordered the Stuffed French Toast with a side of hash browns and both were delicious. The french toast has a rice krispy crust and was nice and crunchy, which was a good compliment to the stuffing inside. It came with three huge slices, so you get a lot of food for the price. Decided to treat my dad to a spectacular brunch at Brown Hound for Father's Day. Expecting that they would be jam packed for the actual day, we made a reservation (for 4) for Saturday at 11:30 am instead. Our timing was excellent, as we had a perfect corner table in the inside area and the room mostly to ourselves for the entire duration of our meal. I'm a fan of Brown Hound from their days in Bristol, and have been excited to try their new menu at the MAG. Focusing again on local and seasonal, with owner Trish at the head chef coming up with inventive deliciousness, we were not disappointed. Three of the four of us had the Country Bistro eggs benedict - freshly baked smoked gouda biscuit topped with a thick ham steak, fried eggs instead of poached, and a generous topping of a spicy hollandaise, served with a side of decadent fried potatoes with caramelized onions. It had lots of depth and texture and was full of flavor. My dad decided against the eggs bene just to get something different and had the Croak (not a typo) Madame, which he loved. Challah bread with ham and cheese, an egg on top ('toad in the hole'), and a rich bechamel sauce, served with a side salad, which at this time of year is a seasonal salad with fresh greens and strawberries. There wasn't much left on any plate! With our meal we had coffees (from Canal Town Coffee Roasters) and I had a chai tea, and we also had a side of their special bacon, also made locally. A really delicious meal all around. We did not save room for dessert, and were a little disappointed in ourselves as they have a wide variety of goodies, including cheesecake, gluten free cookies, brownies, pot de creme, etc. But we just couldn't do it - we'll have to eat smarter next time! I definitely recommend this place - they are open for lunch every day, dinner a couple nights a week and breakfast/brunch on the weekends. This was my second time here. We came on Sunday morning (on the opening of the Monet exhibit) and it completely slipped my mind to try and make a reservation. However, the host was able to quickly seat us! And our waiter came shortly after we were seated. I was really impressed considering how packed it was. I decided to do a "pick three" with homefries, eggs, a biscuit, and the BBQ pork belly as an extra. Let me just tell you how amazing this combination was. The biscuit was even better than it was last time it was here (it was softer with better flavor), the homefries were cooked perfectly, and the pork belly was so soft with a delicious sauce. Amazing! My fiancé and I sat at the bar. It's a small bar & there was no one there sitting. Plus, we like sitting at the bar anyways. The bartender was so friendly & personable. I wish I could remember her name (she was right, I wouldn't be able to remember it, haha). But she was great. She's only there on Sundays for brunch. They don't have a whole lot of options for brunch, but that's okay because what they have is great! My fiancé got their peach french toast. It's the perfect size for one person. I got their Johnny Cakes. There were three big cakes that I couldn't even finish. The syrup was yummy. The only thing is they were a tad dry. That's literally my ONLY complaint, if that even is one. I've made reservations for Brown Hound Downtown multiple times now... and seriously, the night before each? It would snow so hard that getting to brunch the next morning would have been a nightmare. Ugh. ... but yesterday? I was FINALLY able to make it! Mmm... brunch. Brown Hound Downtown is a gem of a bistro located in the University of Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery. Tucked away off the main entrance to the gallery, you're first met with a little counter for the bistro/cafe, and Brown Hound is right up the stairs to the left of the counter. Since my friend and I had reservations, we were seated immediately... but reservations or not, attention to seating is well done here and I didn't catch anybody having to wait for a table or anything. The brunch is clearly popular though (plenty of tables filled and changed over during our time at brunch), so reservations can't hurt. For brunch itself, you can pick any items off their breakfast or lunch menus. My friend and I started with mimosas (because brunch), while she ordered a Downtown Burger (described on the menu as "1/2lb ground beef & pork, naked on brioche roll") and I decided to just go for it... ordering both the French Toast (Herbed panko crusted, stuffed with ham & gruyere, house-made dijon mustard, side of bourbon-maple syrup) and their soup of the day, Manhattan Clam Chowder. There was, unfortunately, a bit of a mix-up with the burger... as the server asked my friend if she wanted the goat cheese & onion jam topping for the burger and my friend said "No, none of that." She assumed the burger would instead come out with lettuce or tomato on it... but alas, when the burger was brought to our table later? It was a burger with a bun... and nothing else. I urged my friend to perhaps ask for some lettuce or tomato on the side if she wanted it, but she didn't want to cause a disturbance or anything. The menu DID say "1/2lb ground beef & pork, naked on brioche roll" for the description of the burger though... and the modification options were either "All American - bacon & cheddar" or "Bistro - goat cheese & onion jam"... so a naked burger with a bun is what she got, in accordance with the menu, along with steak fries. As for my French Toast and Manhattan Clam Chowder, the latter was the real star of the show... plenty of clam and other delicious veggies cooked together to a savory perfection. Honestly, I probably should have just ordered a full bowl of that, as opposed to just a cup. The French Toast stuffed with ham & gruyere, while tasty, wasn't something I would order again... crunch on the outside (it's crusted with cereal, which is great), but pretty soggy on the inside. Not as balanced in texture as I usually prefer, but that's me. Anyway, all in all? This was a delightful brunch... and as a total "dog person," I looooove the look of the place. Personal photos of pooches everywhere, plus the very cool dog art hanging around the bistro... I'm on board. The more I can be surrounded by adorable doggy goodness, the better. TL;DR Manhattan Clam Chowder is a win... but make sure you're careful with how you order your burger (i.e. pay attention to the menu or you'll end up with an unexpectedly naked burger). Ambience is welcoming and personal, and brunch is a highly recommended time to snag a meal... and did I mention there was live music during brunch? A nice extra touch. Would enjoy going back. Brown Hound for brunch, Brown Hound for dinner, it's all delish! But really brunch is a true treat. Their menu combines breakfast and lunch so you can get the best of everything. There's always someone who wants lunch at 11am. Yeah, it's usually me. The space is located inside Memorial Art Gallery - you can enter from the back "gallery entrance" noted by a blue awning over the door or the front museum entrance in the right corner past the atrium. It's a cool space for a restaurant! You get the museum vibe with the stone walls and open space looking out into the atrium, but also a cozy restaurant vibe inside. The Brown Hound name is in reference to the pup so there are photos of dogs throughout the space. A bonus for the dog-friendly folks. They cover all the bases when it comes to their brunch menu. Waffles, pancakes, benedict, french toast, and 3-egg traditional breakfast - all with their own twist. I'll tell you the french toast special is out of control good - crusted with crushed cereal, stuffed with a sweet creamy delight, drizzled, the whole 9. It changes regularly though so be prepared for a new variety from time to time. The most recent visit it was stuffed with a mascarpone-like filling with slivered almonds and drizzled with chocolate. Dessert almost! Very sweet, very indulgent, worth sharing. The benedict, however, is my standby. That spicy hollandaise is everything! It quite literally kicks it up a notch. The home fries pair well with it and the biscuit is so flaky. An all-around breakfast combo. Plus, brunch cocktails - yes! Mimosa, french 75s, the gamut! The brunch menu includes lunch which has the all American sandwich, burger, salad, soup vibe, even a juice - something for everybody! The burger looked super juicy, I'll definitely be trying that next time. Dinner is less frequent as they're open only Thursdays and 1st Fridays. Again, the menu rotates - offering seasonal varieties. The gnocchi if you can get it, is worthwhile - keep an eye out. I'd love to be able to eat here more in the evenings as I'm more of a dining out gal during the week. Wow!!! This place is so uniquely placed in an art gallery, parking is on the street, it's a great place for families or quite business discussions! There is not much seating so if you want to restaurant for larger parties call ahead, there is a nice table in the atrium of the art gallery that would be nice to reserve. Dry patty with damp brioche buns for $15! What a steal. To make things even better they provided us with an already opened and used orange juice. The attention and detail they put into their food and service is just *chef's kiss* The grain bowl would be an 7/10. What was baffling was that the restaurant wasn't busy when we walked in to pick up our order. We had the traditional American breakfast which was three eggs, toast , sausage and potatoes and the special which was a French toast stuffed with lemon and almond cream cheese . Both were excellent . They have mimosas and bloody Mary's for brunch , but we just had coffee . Bonus was soft live music that allowed us to still talk. We arrived around 1030 am and were seated right away , but the room was full by the time we left . That brunch though! I've been following Brown Hound on Istagram for a while and finally made it in to eat. We made an online reservation for six at 11:00 am on a Sunday and were seated right away. Seating was on the balcony above the museum atrium in adorable tables, and we were greeted promptly by our server. The walls are adored with dog pictures that made my heart happy. The food was outstanding! I had a breakfast grain bowl with maple butter, jam and blueberries served with a side of steamed milk. This was essentially a healthy oatmeal and while the toppings were a bit more abundant than I needed I enjoyed it, next time I'll get the jam and maple butter on the side for lighter dipping. I was definitely tempted by the stuffed french toast and the banana bread pancakes but went with the "healthier" option. Two members of my party had the frittata and three went with standard eggs, toast, breakfast potatoes and meats. Our meals came out quickly and were all delicious. The breakfast potatoes were red skinned potatoes and were sauteed and well spiced. We had a round of cocktails as well, a few of us had mimosas which were orange juice heavy, but only $6. One person went with a Bloody Mary which was well balanced and not too spicy. Two of our party had the French 75, which, in truth was not very well balanced and served in a stemless cocktail glass. The coffee needs work, it was not great. I'd love to see one of our many local rosters featured here with real half and half. We held a brunch for 35 people to celebrate my grand-daughters baptism. We initially worked with the general manager, Webster, to schedule the event and reserve the private room. Webster was very accommodating in our dealings with him. After confirming the room reservation, we worked with the catering coordinator, Julie, to plan the event. Julie was very good to work with as she offered suggestions for customizing the menu towards our wants and needs. She did not hold our options to what was offered in their standard menu. On the day of the event, we were served by Julie and Robert. They both were very attentive to make sure everyone had a fill cup or glass. The food was excellent. Everyone who attended complimented the service and the quality of the food. No one had a single complaint. The room had beautiful wood work and was clean and bright. Perfect for our event. The next time I am looking the hold an event, the Brown Hound will be my first call. read more
