This is one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a bagel shop, anywhere. After waiting to place my order, I noticed that one of the staff was literally yelling at a customer saying that he ordered something that he clearly expressed that he did not order. Another customer ordered something, and immediately after she said the order, the person at the counter proceeded to get her something entirely different. The customer said that she did not order that, and it's clear that the worker had not been listening to her order at all. When it was my time to order, I told the person at the counter that I have a life threatening peanut allergy, and I wanted to know if it's safe for me to eat there because I noticed they served PB&J. She said we don't have peanuts. I said "you have peanut butter on your menu." She said "you want peanut butter?" I said no I can die from it. It was clear she didn't understand the gravity of my allergy. After I finally made my order, being told it was safe for me, 5 minutes later they asked me what I wanted. It was clear they didn't listen to a word I said. I said my order again. When the worker finally gave me my sandwich, after telling me she forgot to put hot sauce (not a big deal), i checked the sandwich to make sure it was in fact what I ordered. It was no surprise to me after opening the sandwich to see that it was literally nothing close to what I ordered. I came up to the worker and said I didn't order this sandwich, she said "sorry what do you want?" So, after dealing with all of this terribly annoying situation for 15 minutes, I asked for my money back. I'd like to say that I never post negative reviews of restaurants. And I totally understand when there is a language barrier. But there is a certain standard of quality that is expected anywhere. That you get treated nicely by the workers, they listen to your order, and you get what you order. And small things aren't a big deal. But this fell so far below anything I've ever seen. I have been here once or twice and had a relatively "meh" experience. Today, I wanted to give it another shot. Disappointed and won't go back. The bagels are fine. A bagel on it's own is $.99. That's good. I ordered a whole wheat everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. This is $3.81. Which is also a fine price... IF there's actually cream cheese on your bagel! There was the lightest, tiniest bit of spread on this thing. I'm talking a teaspoon. So I paid $2.82 for a small "hint" of cream cheese? On a new york bagel? Are you kidding? I left just wanting a real, satisfying quality bagel experience instead of a stingily-schmeared, over-priced one. I asked the nice guy who made my bagel about the prices of each (with/without), and mentioned that I didn't really think it was worth it because there was barely any spread on the one he made me. He said "oh... yeah..." Also... it smelled like Raid or some really gross chemical cleaner. And... they were playing some spike tv car chase show and police videos at such a loud volume, I could barely hear myself think. Go somewhere else! Excellent bagels, excellent service. You'll be walking home on new years eve at 3am and this place is somehow open. But what really makes this place stand out is the amazing muffins. Forget about the blueberry or chocolate chip, go for the pistachio, or lemon poppy. Also give the cinnamon walnut cream cheese a try if you like cinnamon raisin bagels. My favorite type of bread is a BAGEL! I got a BLT on an everything bagel toasted and it was delicious! Toasted to perfection, it wasn't too hard to chew and it wasn't mushy either. They used fresh green lettuce. It wasn't like the foxy iceberg lettuce. It was green green lettuce that most places would be too cheap to use. So -when cooking food- i understand that you have to test something to see if its done but you're preparing food in a restaurant... use the damn fork ONCE then get a clean one. Don't try a dish twice then pass the same fork to the other guy so he can taste it. I'm never getting food here again. read more

I ordered a bagel with lox and cream cheese and when i got home, i found that the lox were off in color. It was dark and brown in color, anyone who gets lox knows what its supposed to look like. It did not look fresh and i went back to the store to ask for my money back. When i told them that i wanted my money back, they were arguing with me that its "homemade lox, so thats why it looks like that. You're gonna have to come back later when the boss comes because we cant give you any money back." Absolutely awful customer service, overall bad experience. I would not eat anything that looked questionable to get food poisoning, and this looked very questionable. If you can walk the extra three blocks (like at La Bagel on 7th ave), go get food at another bagel shop. read more

I am grateful to have heard back from the owner of Brownstone Bagel & Bread Co. It is always heartwarming to know that a business owner actually cares about the satisfaction of their customers. I went back to Brownstone last week. I decided to give them another try. I asked for my coffee the way I like it. When I saw the woman (I am not 100% sure it was the same person, but it most likely was) pouring milk into my coffee instead of half and half, I asked her if she could possibly put in half and half, but still keep the coffee dark. There was no complaint...there was no issue made...there was no yelling. That was a great relief. And I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with butter for my daughter. She loved that there were actual plump raisins in the dough, and she said it was the best cinnamon raisin bagel she ever had. We will definitely be back. Just got a bagel from here where the cream cheese was warm and tasted sour. They don't have A/C and it seems like their food isn't being properly refrigerated either. Also, they're cash only AND their ATM wasn't working. So I paid an ATM fee at another place + the cost of this bagel only to throw it out 10 mins later. I won't be back. read more

Solid New York bagels, especially when they are fresh out of the oven. Line is a little long in the morning starting around 8:20 AM -- the staff could be more efficient in managing the line. Might be worth ordering ahead or trying to get there before the morning rush. Overall, though, great bagel spot. read more

Michael Vincinguerra is a racist [redacted] and I haven't darkened the doorstep of Brownstone Bagel since 2007 after he treated me so incredibly HORRIBLY. The entire store was full of white people, all of whom he offered nice, friendly customer service. When my turn came, I was treated like a LEPER. I ordered a breakfast special off the board behind the counter. All specials with green dots next to them came with a coffee. When my sandwich was presented to me without the coffee the green dot next to it indicated, I asked him about it. With UTTER CONTEMPT he denied my order came with a coffee. I said, "What about the green dot?" "There is no green dot," he snarled, practically foaming at the mouth. He REFUSED to turn around and simply look at the board or, you know, be a rational, professional, courteous business owner and explain the situation to me if I had something mixed up. In total disbelief I looked around at all the white people, imploring silently for one of them to intervene on my behalf or to at least admit that there WAS indeed a green dot next to my order, which, according to the chalk board legend meant came with a coffee; certainly everyone else on my side of the counter could CLEARLY see the green dot next to the sandwich in question. Like normal New Yorkers, and typical privileged people, they didn't want to get involved. Thanks a lot. I left without buying the food. The horrible, racist experience totally took away my appetite. I wasn't hungry anymore. I felt VIOLATED. I promptly went to my office (two blocks away) and sent an organization-wide email letting all 50 co-workers know about my experience. I asked them not to patronize his establishment since that's how he treated non-white customers. And before any of you go, "How do you know he's racist? He could've been mean just because of anything, and not because of your color." GTFOH. He was perfectly pleasant, professional, warm and accommodating for ALL the white customers in the store. I got a chance to watch him interact with them before it was my turn. Mighty suspicious that he treats the only non-white customer like ABSOLUTE CRAP. I mean his treatment of me was CRINGE-WORTHY. It was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Racist Hyde. After 30+ years of being Black, I'm extremely experienced in being able to tell who is racist and who is not. I'm an expert, actually. I have never forgotten that experience. NEVER. I have never gone inside again and I absolutely NEVER WILL. And I make sure to let people know about my experience any chance I get. I even spit when I pass by the place on my way to work. And I swear to God, if any response to this includes, "I can't be racist because I have a lot of Black friends/Black co-workers, and even some Black family members, I voted for Obama and bought tickets to Beyonce's concert," I WILL THROW UP. NONE OF THAT precludes a person from being racist. read more

First and last visit to this place. Will never return EVER. I bought a groupon for my mother for Mothers day and her BIRTHDAY to get a bakers dozen and cc. so I take her there and the guy behind the counter was extremely rude!!!! First of all he grabbed the groupon and kept us waiting while he showed his manager to find out what it was. None of them seemed to know they offered a groupon! Then he says okay fine you can have the bagels but not a bakers dozen as it states, because your using a groupon so you only get 12 not 13. So I said "no! the groupon states a "BAKERS DOZEN" which means 13. So he felt it was extremely important to argue about this for ten minutes and tell me "no your not getting that extra bagel", and then make us wait again to go tell his manager he only wanted to give us 12. The manager told him no you give them 13. Why he felt honoring the groupon as stated especially on mothers day was so hard for him, I have no idea. That one extra bagel wouldn't have come out of his paycheck so I have no idea why he felt he had to argue about something so stupid especially when the groupon said BAKERS DOZEN!!!!!!. So finally it comes to picking out the bagels. The specific bagel flavors we came for, they were completely out of. No Pumpernickel and No onion. The two flavors we wanted completely out of. He didn't even offer to bake some. How does a bagel place run out of Onion and Pumpernickel on a Sunday, mothers day at 12 pm?????? So we took whatever they had left. Such a disappointment, will not be returning EVER. Amazing how one bad employee can ruin an owners business. I'm sure I am not the first person he was rude to and left not wanting to return. The owner better get some new staff that treats people like family instead of treating them like the ENEMY if he wants to keep ppl returning because i am all about service, you treat me good, I'll return over and over, treat me like crap and I'm done, no matter how good the food is! ****The Owner was kind enough to offer a free dozen & CC for the bad experience and is going to reprimand his staff. I still wont be going be back but it was nice of him to offer as it was not his fault but unfortunately, the fault of his staff. Hopefully this won't happen to someone else read more

I just ate like, the best thing I've eaten: the eggs purgatory - (everything) bagel with eggplant parm, (scrambled) eggs, mozzarella and marinara - tremendously good ! They're really nice as well, I asked about the zataar bagel as I hadn't heard of it before, and they gave me a slice of it to sample - with a schmear on it as well ! Definitely worth checking out if you like something a little better than the average bagel spot. read more

The bagels here are great. They are perfectly cooked and their "everything" bagel is quite a taste. My favorite however is the simple cinnamon raisin bagel they have. They also have a huge assortment of spreads from raisin-walnut to jalapeno cheddar. They are quick and understanding if you mess up your order, and the prices are fantastic. read more

Also, I don't know if this is a normal occurrance, but when I was there, there were no labels on the bins of bagels indicating what kind they were, and there was no list to be found. Maybe I'm stupid, but I can't tell if that's onion or garlic on a bagel from ten feet away. Also as another reviewer mentioned, I am not a new York bagel aficionado, but being a tourist, I've had my share of bagels from different places. These bad boys are nice and fresh. Very fluffy with fresh made cream cheese (herbs) and fresh squeezed orange juice replaced my morning coffee at this place. I made the mistake of not toasting my bagel (a standard thing in Canada) but it helped me realize how fresh the bagels are. Downside is that there wasn't that much room for seating, but you take what you can get in this city. read more

We visit Brooklyn once a year and stay at a nearby hotel that has a terrible breakfast. The girls BEG to come to the bagel place. Efficient, friendly and tasty. Went back for another round, I love that the owner cares about his customers experiences. The bagels were just as good as my last visit and this time it was way less crowded and not as "overwhelming" of an experience. While I still can't read the signs on the bagel bins (to be fair I am nearly blind) It is still confusing what they have available, and I wish bagel guys (and gals) were a little more friendly (in general) but that doesn't appear to be a part of deal and the employees are at least not rude like some other bagel spots so I'll take it. This will definitely be my go to bagel spot in the neighborhood. read more
