Not sure what took me so long to give a review of this gem of a place but better late than never…read more I've come to 1 of 1 a few times so far and it's safe to say I've tried most things on the menu. Real fresh, quality, homemade ingredients mixed in with passion and love for food with delightful twists on memorable sandwiches. Bread is fantastic and so are the awesome drinks to go with your meal. Some of my favorites are the chicken Caesar sandwich, No Sleep till Gravesend, Kitchen Confidential and Grilled Cheese and in the winter, a delicious tomato soup. They also have breakfast on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and you don't want to pass up the yummy Brioche rolls the delicious combos go on. Place is small but a few tables are nice and it's always great on the go. Staff is great and Josh is curating this really authentic spot. Keep it up everyone!

We visited as a stop on Scott's Pizza Bus Tour, which meant we were actively evaluating it against some of the best pizza in the city. Evaluating pizza on a tour is tricky because excellence becomes relative when you are eating multiple high-end pies in a single afternoon. According to Scott, Brooklyn DOP began in founder Thomas Ardito's apartment during the 2020 lockdowns. With his primary work on pause, he started baking pizza and selling pies through Instagram to pay his rent. People kept ordering. His friend Jason D'Amelio joined the effort, and what started as an apartment project turned into pop-ups and eventually a brick-and-mortar shop on 5th Avenue in Park Slope. That is a considerably more compelling origin story than a corporate franchise business plan. The setup in Park Slope includes a quiet back courtyard, which offered a comfortable spot for our group to sit, eat, and recover between stops. It feels relaxed and distinctly Brooklyn without trying too hard to remind you where you are. The pizza itself is very good. The crust strikes a proper balance between a crisp bottom and a chewy interior. The toppings are handled with care, from the crushed tomatoes to the fresh mozzarella. This is dough crafted by people who take fermentation seriously rather than relying on pre-packaged shortcuts. On its own merits, the pizza is a solid 4.5 stars. Unfortunately for Brooklyn DOP, it was competing on a tour against places operating on another plane. It is an excellent pie, but it was not the single slice that caused the entire tour to fall silent in collective awe. Still, that is an aggressive standard to hold against any local shop. Brooklyn DOP offers a great courtyard, a serious approach to dough, and a standout product. Landing just shy of five stars says far more about the sheer volume of elite pizza we ate that day than it does about the shop itself. Four stars. And if you are not spending the afternoon riding around New York with Scott Wiener eating pizza at some of the finest pizza joints the 5 boroughs have to offer, you can probably bump that half-star back up.

The chai was frothy, rich, the black tea leaves infused with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, sweetener, and milk. I savored every sip and complimented the barista. It is always great to find a new coffee place. I expect to be a loyal local at Velvette Brew. They also host music events and have a collaboration with Cry Baby Ice Cream. I asked what was the other 15 cents for, and he said it was for toasting my bagel. Great place to go for good bagels. I usually get the bacon egg and cheese. My only wish is that they would get some tobasco sauce as that's my absolute favorite sauce to put on bagels. Unfortunately these people cannot make a decent bagel. Brownstone's bagels look good, but they are dry and flavorless even when fresh out of the oven. The only way to enjoy these bagels is to toast them and to use lots of butter or cream cheese, and a good Brooklyn bagel should be delicious as is. There're better choices nearby. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. Not only can you find better bagels in the neighborhood but they charge just as much for butter as the bagel. While most places give you butter/cream cheese free, this place charges extra - a lot. To top it off, it's conveniently cash only. Save your time & money and go somewhere else. read more

The entire sandwich was really hefty to the point that if I wasn't starving, I probably would've only been able to eat half of it. The bagels were good but competition is stiff and I can't say this was the fluffiest or softest or most inventive bagel I've ever had. It was fresh and it was good. I do think it's a great bagel place to come to with kids as my 7 year old was thrilled to see cream cheese options like birthday cake and Oreo (what she settled on). The price point was good and the space is well designed with a few seats inside. I was surprised to see it so empty on a Saturday morning but guess it'll take awhile for people to let go of whatever their other favorite bagel is in the neighborhood to give this one a try. I left Grabsteins and walked around the block to see the line of people as usual at Court Street bagels and shook my head - nothing is worth that wait, just get your bagel around the corner!

This past Sunday I saw that they'd opened their doors, and I had to give them a whirl. The shop is new and clean and bright, with a little bit of seating and a beautiful counter displaying all the schmears and smoked fish that you could want on a bagel. Their menu is surprisingly extensive, with many options beyond the typical bagel things like burgers, wraps, salads, and more. There's a sandwich on the menu called "The Murder" that comes with chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and barbecue sauce...and I like those things, and will one day get down with murder. The Murder, I mean. However, that's more of a second or third date sandwich. For my first venture with Grabstein's, I rolled with the Lox 'N' Loaded. A classic combo of nova lox, scallion cream cheese, capers, and red onion, and I think a good barometer for a bagel shop. I think they were a little busier than they expected for one of their first days open, so they were out of a lot of options. Most importantly, there were no everything bagels (my go-to) and no flagels of any kind (despite them being listed on the menu), so I went with a whole wheat everything. NBD. This was a good bagel sandwich. I would've appreciated a little more lox and a little less tomato, but I enjoyed it (as I do all bagel sandwiches). I will say that while it was tasty, the bagel was not exactly hot out of the oven (it was around 11 am). I know that it's impossible for a bagel shop to always have hot and fresh bagels, but I tell you this because it relates to the extraneous anecdote below. Read on if you'd like, but know that these are solid bagels in a nice new shop for the area. Extraneous Anecdote: When I stepped up to the counter I said, "Hey, how you doing?" Before I could tell the older gentleman manning the register what I wanted (if we're being honest, I wasn't truly wondering how he was doing), he launched into a bit of a diatribe about how a lot of people seemed to want their bagels toasted that ended hilariously with, "Shoot me now." Now, I can only assume this man was Mr. Grabstein himself. Only an old Jew who owned the shop could be this cranky about people toasting bagels, and I say this as a medium aged Jew who has known many cranky old Jews since I was a young Jew. And I get that many people are bagel purists who don't believe in toasting. I generally do not get my bagels toasted, as a warm, fresh bagel doesn't need any toasting. But I also think it is super funny to complain to a new customer about other customers wanting their bagels toasted, when for all you know I want my bagel toasted.
