This is basically a standard and average NYC bagel place. It would be exceptional and worth the high prices anywhere outside of NYC, but within NYC I wouldn't make a special trip. I loved this place during my Brooklyn visit. My friend suggested we stop by for a bagel before going to the Brooklyn bridge. It is a small establishment, looks family owned and it did not disappoint! We ordered a bagel with smoked salmon, avocado and tofu cream cheese. At first, I was skeptical about trying the tofu cream cheese because I am not a fan of vegan products (taste-wise) HOWEVER, I could not tell is was NOT dairy cream cheese. It was really good. They have a wide selection of several cream cheeses, I was amazed. The bagel itself is big, I split one with my friend and we both were pretty full. Price is reasonable $13ish? I believe it was. Stopped by here on Saturday while walking around and got a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel. It took 10 minutes to prepare which seemed like a very long time for a bagel... despite that it was delicious. Stayed very clean(best kind-when it doesn't fall apart) and was able to eat it while walking. It was very good would go back. This place was recommended by my hotel and it didn't disappoint. It's not a large place and its nestled among the neighborhood residence buildings. I ordered a coffee and my usual bagel, lox, cream cheese, and red onion. The bagel was fresh and airy, the cream cheese lox spread was excellent. I popped into Montague's today because it's close to my apartment and I really enjoyed it. I opted for the classic everything bagel with cream cheese, toasted. The bagel was the perfect level of chewy and the cream cheese was delicious. The one thing I would have like is if the everything seasoning had stayed on the bagel a bit better. The bagels in the display window had much more seasoning than I ended up with on mine. All in all though, the price is right, the service is quick, and the food is good. We gotta give Montague Street Bagels some love, because they run a tight ship for how hectic it is on weekend mornings! Don't be fooled if you don't see a line from outside- it's always packed inside and the line snakes around. I would say we go every other weekend because it's the closest bagel shop to us, and while they aren't the neighborhood's best bagel, they do make delicious NY bagels that hit the spot. I'm typically a "scallion cream cheese on a plain bagel" type of girl, but on occasion, I do like their scallion lox cream cheese, which is just the right amount of lox without shifting into fancy schmancy gear. For some reason, every once in awhile, I will end up waiting over 20 minutes for my bagel and people who come after me will get their sandwiches before I do. I have never run into this problem at Court Street Bagels (objectively better bagels, in my opinion, but they're cash only and further away from me), and it takes all of me to not let my hangry-self be known, but I can see they're backed up and struggling too. Anyways, I appreciate that they take card, and they provide us with tasty bagels and SEC bagel sandwiches, and for the majority of the time, that's just alright with me! read more

Bagels are amazing but what I love even more are their sandwiches! I highly recommend the pope of montague which is turkey and cheese with gravy. They have a bunch of excellent combination with cool names posted at the counter. You can order custom sandwiches, my favorite being chicken cutlet with lettuce, tomato, onions and bagels on a toasted roll. Two stars for the food. Zero for the service. I've been coming here for years because the bagels are good and the location is convenient, but they mess up orders, overcharge, and fail to include what you pay for more often than not. Three out of four times, I have to return to have them redo my order (for instance, once I ordered and paid for lox for husband's bagel, confirmed and reconfirmed my order, only to find that no lox was included). The woman at the front offers abysmal customer service. Once she once rang up my order wrong and I corrected her, she yelled at me. Another time, when we called to ask that they fix our order, she hung up on us twice--despite that we are, as she knows, neighborhood regulars. I shudder to think how she might dare to treat non-regular customers. Guard your wallets! read more

I want to like this place because the location is convenient. But during peak hours, the waits are long and there is no organization. They also get orders slightly wrong... Ex: I ordered a whole wheat everything bagel with lox/scallion spread, and received a regular everything bagel with scallion spread that might've been tofu. Little things like this can be frustrating. The taste of the cream cheese is inconsistent, not sure what that's about. It's not the cleanest shop compared to other bagel spots in the area. Montague Bagels (Hot Bagels) is one of the BEST bagel shops in NYC. They have a wide variety of bagel flavors and cream cheese spreads. My review went from two starts to 0. My sister came in to this bagel establishment during her lunch break. She chose to purchase a bottle of water from here, and eat a slice of pizza from an outside source. No one else was in the bagel store, so she chose to sit down. She was going to sit outside but it was 25 degrees, and wet from the snow. Two gentlemen watched my sister eat the entire pizza without saying a word, and told my sister to take her pizza box out of the garbage can (very shy female that's polite). It was terrible and rude. Not to mention, she tipped $5. He said, "you spent only $1". He should have said something from the beginning. She left traumatized, and said,"if someone would have said something to me, I wouldn't have eaten it here." And they told her to take her garbage out of the garbage can. ::raised eyebrow:: I have ordered bagels here for my office and NEVER AGAIN.
