While taking a walk through Edgewater, I decided to take a chance on Brownstone Pancake Factory and the experience fulfilled most of my expectations. ENVIRONMENT I only stepped inside to pickup my to-go order but the seating was plentiful and the decor was festive. In actuality, this would be a lovely spot for a children's party. FOOD While seated across from the Skyline, I decided to unbox the buttermilk pancakes. To my delight they not only looked delicious but were quite tasty. I also ordered scrambled eggs and turkey bacon but they missed the mark. If you're stumbling through North Jersey and need a sweet pick-me-up, Brownstone should certainly be one of the first places that comes to mind. Brownstone has made its legacy in Bergen County and it never disappoints. First of all, I appreciate the valet parking. There's never a set price and it makes it very convenient, especially in "hard to find parking" Edgewater. Even though the restaurant is ALWAYS packed, they do a great job at treating their customers with patience, professionalism, and a smile. We were no different, as Cami was a delightful Server. She went above and beyond for our comfort and even offered us a free colossal ice cream float (that another customer did not want), which we declined, or else it would have added a sweet and delightful 3,800 calories. I started with a Mocha Cappuccino and it was amazing. The drizzle of chocolate, after being stirred throughout the mug, adds the perfect amount of sweetness that does not require added sugar. It also makes you forget about the cold that inevitably you'll have to endure after the meal. During this visit, we ordered the following: Blueberry Pancakes (Fresh blueberries baked inside and on to top, served with blueberry compote on the side). These blueberries were not only exquisite, but there were enough blueberries/compote to accompany every bite. The other was the Gourmet Mushroom & Stomach Omelet (With fresh mushrooms, spinach, garlic & goat cheese). Every ingredient was fresh, the goat cheese was so deliciously creamy, and to-go boxes were necessary, because Brownstone always serves large portions. Will I return to Brownstone?.... ABSOLUTELY. I haven't been here in years. The first thing we were not thrilled with was you have to valet. There is no other option. We don't love to valet so we were disappointed with this aspect. One of the most things I appreciated with the overall experience was Roger. He was very friendly and when he seated us, he sat us at a roomy table. This was great! Many restaurants don't pay attention to people's sizes and sit them in inappropriate seating. My husband is a big guy and is often uncomfortable. So kudos to Roger for seeing and knowing this. Our waiter was also very nice. His name was Adrian. I also liked the decor. The thing we were not that impressed with was the taste of the food and the look of it. It was average at best. They had gluten free pancakes, but would have been nice to know the ingredients. I did not ask but did not see on the menu. You also had to get 2 egg whites. My husband's omelette also did not seem like it had much cheese. He left 1/2 of it which he does not do often. Also the bathroom was small & very crowded. 2 stalls and 1 sink. This was not enough for how many people were there and I found myself waiting longer than you should have to. The one other thing that seemed enjoyable was the birthday celebrations. Was in NJ/NYC for the holidays and got to meet up with some family and try this spot out for brunch. We had a group of 6 and got there around 11am and were seated right away. The menu is huge, the ambiance is fun and so is the vibe. Staff was nice and all the food arrived pretty quickly. I had their croissant breakfast sandwich and their biscuits and gravy. My fiancé had peanut butter pancakes that were stacked and delicious. The rest of the family had a variety of meals from French onion soup to omelets. Everyone was happy and satisfied. Man, this place is packed. Luckily there is valet parking because otherwise I would have had to drive on past. At 10:30ish on a Sunday, there were a lot of people waiting, but as a party of 2, we were luckily seated immediately. I'm sure results vary. Even though it was packed, it wasn't overly noisy. Despite the packed house, our server was really good about getting our order and coffee refills. There are a lot of good options on the menu, but I went with the meat combo omelet. It was really packed heavy with meat and came with a hearty portion of home fries. My friend got the blueberry coconut French toast which looked like a beautiful dessert, but the combo comes with a big sausage link and eggs to add a little meal variety. The orange juice was indeed freshly squeezed and refreshing. The service was good and she gave us plenty of time to explore the menu without rush. However the only disappointment was that I asked them if they could sing happy birthday to my friend and they forgot. I excused myself from the table to request them to sing happy birthday to my friend as a surprise but I couldn't find my waitress. I spoke with another waitress in hopes that she would relay the message but I'm not sure if she did. The waitress I spoke with said that she would and asked me to pick out a cupcake so they could bring it when they sang. There were at least 3 other birthdays that morning and it looked so fun. They had a mini bubble machine and fun candles. I was really really looking forward to my friend being celebrated but unfortunately that did not happen. Besides that incident I would return for the breakfast because it was delicious and I felt like the prices were fair. If you go for a birthday make sure to remind your server just in case. I've been here twice. The first time I came, the food was oily and bland. Three years later, I decided to give it another try instead of going to my regular breakfast spot, which is 30 minutes away. Bad idea. The server was very sweet, and I saw her take down my order correctly. However, the kitchen got it wrong: they sent out home fries instead of fries for my husband, the pancakes had powdered sugar when we explicitly told them no powdered sugar, and the bacon was soggy and very oily--basically inedible. I asked for an egg white omelette with mushrooms, peppers, and feta; they missed the mushrooms and had to redo it. Once they brought the right items, we began to eat, and that's when I noticed a HAIR in my omelette, basically encrusted in a mushroom. At this point, my husband and I were done. I was looking forward to a nice breakfast, but this was terrible. We spoke to a manager who removed the omelette from our order; we paid our check and left. It's such a shame because this spot is literally one block away from me, but this place won't see me EVER AGAIN! FYI--the waitress was awesome, very apologetic, and super sweet. The Iced caramela was to die for and the challah bread french toast and sausage in the combo were delicious. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positive. Staff were very much all over the place and disorganized. The menu was very large and overwhelming. I felt like I was reading a breakfast bible rather than menu items. When the food came, either it didn't come all together at the same time and we had to wait 20 minutes for each item to come and having to constantly remind our waiter what items were missing, the order was wrong or items were missing. To top it all off, The bacon in the combo breakfast tasted very...fake. Like one of those microwavable bacon, the cheesy grits were bland and the eggs were dry and cold. The restaurant was already loud which is anticipated for a busy Sunday afternoon but the birthday celebrations and the loud music made it hard to have a conversation with the people at your table. I'm glad that 1. we came very hungry and 2. we decided on getting one sweet and one savory dish. The food was yummy but be prepared that the pancakes are very very rich. Ours was drenched in peanut butter, chocolate and whipped cream. We happened to peer over at the table next to ours and their pancakes were topped with ice cream and an entire slice of cake, oh my! The only thing that annoyed us was that we substituted the caramelized onion for raw onion and that was an extra charge. Makes no sense because it's less work and technically less ingredients (no oil). I am disgusted with what I witnessed today at this location of Brownstone. It is a true shame that I will no longer be supporting this establishments based on the event that happened here today. I drive an hour to come eat here. We valeted the car and were told by the host it would be a 5-10 minute wait because so many tables were leaving and to wait outside and she would come get us. Okay. Great. We waited 50 minutes in the beating down sun, my husband dripping sweat and here I am 7 months pregnant. DESPITE the fact we waited that long with no check in that's not even the part that made me walk away from this place. After 45 minutes of waiting outside we hear a dog bark. I'm thinking to myself where the heck is that coming from??? I turn around and there are not one but TWO dogs in a black suburban with NO air conditioning and NO water with the windows cracked. Immediately, I bring it to the valets attention because surely they know since they parked the damn car!!!!!!! What's the response from the valet? "Yeah the owners are aware, not my dog so whatever!" What a response!!!!!!! If it weren't for me and another family who was just as disgusted the car never would have even been turned on!!! After making a fuss, the valet people turned on the car for the dogs, so the AC could be on. After that, the host comes out who was really on top of the situation I will say, and once again brings it to the attention of valet and this time goes inside to find the family of the suburban. The owner comes outside and states, "I've been checking on the dogs every 10 minutes." HA!!! WHAT A JOKE! Sir, you got multiple witnesses who have been sitting outside for 50 minutes and not once did we see you approach the vehicle with the dogs in it AND we were sitting at the only exit/entrance. He didn't like our response and starts walking away and another person shouts well let's see what you will think about this situation if the cops were called. Well clearly that shook his boots because he decided to come outside and sit in the car with his two dogs while the rest of his careless family sat inside and continued with their day. You might be thinking well why are you so upset with Brownstone.. why? Because the valet men told us that this isn't the first time people have asked to keep their dogs in the car while they go inside to eat AND they have had to call the cops on people before who left their dogs for too long in the car!!!!!! How? How is there no policy stating, NO DOGS ALLOWED TO BE LEFT IN THE CAR WHILE EATING! I'm truly disgusted, shocked and angry that this isn't the first time this has happened and that there have been numerous situations of this! When will this place not allow people to leave their animals in the car while they eat? Until then, I will make sure not to give this place my business and make sure my family and friends are aware of what went down today. Shame on you, make better policies! read more

The parking lot was very small so there was only valet parking. The place was packed and crowded but there wasn't a wait for a table surprisingly. We ordered the breakfast combo (eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes), the French toast, and the spinach mushroom goat cheese omelette with grits. The portions were large and definitely shareable. I really liked the omelette and the pancakes. The service was not very good. I know it was busy but our waitress was never available and asked us to pay the bill at the front. No other customers were paying the bill at the front. The Englewood Cliffs location was definitely better - better parking and service.
