If you want a real mom and pop experience, this is your place. I suspect this would be what any southern Granny would serve up for Sunday dinner. Plus, the inside is filled this kitschy decor likely to be found in Granny's house (if Granny is fond of taxidermy and plate collections). At just $7.50, the main dish plus three sides is a good value. I had the beef tips and my husband had the chicken and stuffing. Given the choice, I'd recommend the chicken. The chicken was tender and the cornbread stuffing was flavorful. While the beef tips were tender, they were bland. Looking around at the clientele, mostly senior citizens with one foot in the nursing home door, this stands to reason. On the downside, my daughter swears she saw the waitress reuse the biscuits on the table next to us for new patrons. Plus, you have to walk by a garbage-littered patio to use he outdoor restroom, so I am not so sure Bruce's would pass any food safety inspections. That said, we were glad to have the authentic southern cafe experience, and for us it was worth the risk. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! HEALTH HAZARD!! We stopped here a couple of Saturday's ago because we like to try local restaurants when we travel. It is a quaint older building that looks like a very old house that was converted into a restaurant. They have a daily special meat and three or the typical hamburgers/hot-dogs etc. I ordered the ham, mashed potatoes, and gravy, salad, sliced potatoes, and salad. My husband ordered the chicken with cornbread dressing, mustard greens, corn, and sliced potatoes. We had a choice of cornbread or rolls. It came with a small piece of a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. The ham was very good. The mashed potatoes were obviously powered but still tasted OK, and the salad was straight out of a bagged salad mix from their supplier, which was good. The chicken was boiled without any seasoning and the corn bread dressing was so runny I wondered if they even cooked it other than to warm it up. The greens were good, and the tomatoes straight from a supplier (after all, it is February and not yet tomato season). The corn was right out of the can with absolutely no seasoning. It came with vegetable soup which they claimed was homemade (canned tomatoes, canned green beans, canned corn, etc. It tasted OK but had no seasoning in it. The small piece of cake was good. Seeing that the restrooms were around back, having stopped a few miles before and cleaned up for lunch, we decided to go to the restrooms after we ate. HAD WE GONE BACK THERE FIRST WE WOULD HAVE GONE BACK TO THE CAR AND LEFT QUICKLY! As others have reported on other sites and on the regulatory site, as you go to the back the first thing you see in the back yard is a huge stack of empty boxes from their various food distributors stacked 2-4 feet tall, and an old building with the roof caving in behind it. Their perfect little dump was a perfect spot for breeding rats and mice. The back porch is screened in and partially covered with plastic. They told the regulator that a storm did it and they would fix it. It has been at least several months since that report and it is NOT fixed. Inside that porch are at least one old rusty chest freezer with at least one hinge rusted out. It was in the 70's when we stopped and there was an uncut ham shank like one I just ate sitting in an old dented up tin bowl on top of the rusty and very dirty freezer top! With just a screen between the outside and the ham there was no way to keep the dirt from the ground and whatever was in their "dump" from being blown onto the ham. I almost threw up and immediately told my husband: "I hope we don't get food poisoning!" We didn't! The rest rooms are small rooms on each side of the back porch; rustic, with no paper towels. Actually, if they could learn some food handling skills and have a container for their trash, it might be a three star place. Until then, this was our first and LAST visit to this place. read more

The Bruce Cafe is like stepping back in time. They offer a few daily items that are displayed on a placard at the table, no menus needed. The food is rustic country fare and fresh. This is not a place where ya gonna find a Ceasar Salad, but if you want killer fried chicken, catfish and other local favs, this is it. It's a mom and pop place if ya ever found one, and the decor reflects local patronage and warmth. read more

Have heard about this place forever, but had never stopped to eat. I heard it was cute, quaint, and had great home cooking. I was terribly disappointed. The soup was tasteless, the lasagna looked like someone dropped it on the floor before putting it on my plate, the vegetables were mush, the salad was some iceburg lettuce out of a bag, the dressing so watered down it was tasteless, fried chicken we thought would be great at this "down home" place was awful. I can only compare it to bad school lunch cafeteria, or perhaps hospital or nursing home food. Maybe in it's time is was good, but not at this time. read more

My aunt owned and operated this cafe back in the 50's & 60's, so I can only speak to what it USED to be. It truly was a mom & pop operation, and my Aunt Lura made sure the food she served was of the highest quality. We loved to go over to eat at her restaurant, and I can only hope that the restaurant is still maintained to her quality standards. I also had an aunt that lived right next door to the cafe, so when we went to visit one, we got to see both. Though quirky, the outdoor bathroom has been there ever since I can remember, but there was no trash to walk through when my aunt owned it. It was always a clean & served the best biscuits around. read more
