We had dinner at Bryanna's for the first time last evening. There were four people in our party and each of us had the same things to say after dinner and that was that this restaurant was a great find and a real neighborhood gem. Their menu is large with many choices to consider. We started with a Boquita Compuesta which included a delicous assortment taquitos, tostaditas and mini-tacos as well as and order of Tortitas de Papa, three incredibly tasty Guatemalan style potato croquettes. Our main courses consisted of two orders of the Churrasco Guatelmalteco which consisted of an 8 oz. Rib Eye Steak, Grilled Green Onion, Guacamole, Fried Black Beans, Rice, and Longaniza an order of Pepian Mayan chicken stew with potatoes, green beans and imported Guatemalan spices with a side of rice and tortillas and lat but not least an order of Chuletas which consisted of two pork chops prepared in a white wine and onions, served with a side of fried sweet plantain, rice and beans. For dessert, we shared an order of the Mollete Guatemalan style bread pudding glazed with a sweet, light caramel sauce. The servers were very friendly and accomodating allowing us to enjoy an unrushed dinner. To top it off, the food and beverage prices were very reasonable. All in all, a wonderful, delightful dinner in an "Five Star" neighborhood gem. read more

Love, love, love this place! We had a group event here so we didn't order from the menu, but we did get to sample more items that way. Appetizer combo was excellent as was their bean dip- it was more fluid than the average and tasted great. Unusual salad that included beets, apples and green olives. I thought the beet and apple elevate the average salad, but am not a big fan of olives. The best thing on the entree platter was definitely the only-slightly sweet corn tamale. They made us a vegan version of green chicken stew which is traditional Guatemalan dish. The tomatillos make the sauce green and it is tasty. This was my first time dining at a Guatemalan restaurant, and it was such a treat! I've always wanted to try something new, and this experience didn't disappoint. The ambiance was lovely--calm and inviting, especially in the early afternoon when it wasn't too crowded. We ordered the churrasco-style steak with asparagus, and it was absolutely delicious. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try another dish. One thing to note is that parking can be a challenge since it's in the heart of Chicago, especially if street parking is full. We dined for the first time at Bryanna's prior to a recent weeknight performance at nearby American Blues Theatre. It was an interesting and not unpleasant experience. VIBE: The dining room seemed dark and cavernous, and since it was a nice evening, so we sat on the patio behind the building, adjacent to a alley. Not much ambiance. Could not get to the restrooms from the patio; had to go around the building to the front door. SERVICE: Everyone was pleasant and welcoming. It could help to speak Spanish here. I speak a little, and was able to converse to some degree with our server, who didn't have much English. After a short while, a man fluent in English came on duty. Food came out at a decent pace. FOOD: I had pechuga de pollo, a lemony grilled breast; I liked it. My companion had a vegetarian combo, which included a papusa, beans, rice, sweet plantain, and a salad; they judged it OK, though the papusa was not as good as others they'd had. There is a very limited selection of wines by the glass; those I tried were simple, enjoyable and food-friendly. I'd come back if I were in the neighborhood for a play at American Blues. I haven't ate at a Central American restaurant in so long, I'm glad this was a recommendation I followed through on! I indulged when I went: Had the Atole de Elote, while I'm use to an atole being a bit more thick, this consistency was thin but PERFECT in flavor! It was almost like a nicer creamy drink! I then had to follow this with the Tamales de Elote, my goodness were they great! They felt a bit more soft than I'm use to, but it brought out this creamy texture that I really enjoyed. The crema on top was the perfect paring. I then was a bit too full for the popusas, but I still ate. I thought they were good but a bit thicker than I'm use to (don't mean to compare my moms cooking but that's my only point of reference hehe). Pupusas de Loroco y Queso, Chicharrón, y la mexicana were good but I felt they needed a bit more flavor. Can't go wait to go back and try the ox tail dish, my sister recommended it to me! Bryanna's Restaurant is a must-visit for palettes curious about Guatemalan and Salvadoran cuisine -- it is fancy enough for date night but affordable enough for weekday take out. For Guatemalan Independence Day, my partner who is Chapín, and I decided to support local Guatemalan owned businesses, and BryAnna's came up in a Google search. We saw great reviews and decided to stop by in-person for dinner. The restaurant is immaculately clean and festive with thoughtful cultural touches! We loved the authenticity and the ability to order in English or Spanish. For around 20 minutes, we were the only patrons, but others came in and out to dine. We ordered a mojito and a modelo along with the most delicious homemade food we've had in a while -- Pepián de pollo, platanos con mole, and two chicken and cheese pupusas to share. My drink had little to no alcohol in it and I was disappointed, but the food was phenomenal and comforting. The chicken was tender, the pupusa crisp and filled, and the platanos fried perfectly. We got free nachos with salsa and beans and decided to order a sampler plate that was enough for the 4 of us and then some it was a mix of varieties but we wished it had some kind of meat on there like piece of pork or sausage, the price was super good at 48 and we ordered drinks and some nachos for a total of 100, not bad at all I wish that they had some spice to the food it was good just lacking a little something , we had a great time and didn't wait long for our food read more

It includes: Five Shredded Beef Dobladas, Five Pupusas, a Choice of Topping: Mixto or Veggie; Five Taquitos of your Choice: Chicken, Beef or Potato; Five Pastelitos filled with Pork and Vegetables, served with Fried Cassava and Curtido Salad. I was meeting a friend for lunch in Chicago and where to go because Chicago has endless good restaurants so I felt that I should try some cuisine from another country. I wanted to avoid the trendy/hip places and find a neighborhood gem so a Salvadoran/Guatemala restaurant would be perfect. The place is on a coroner with neighborhood parking, we parked at the front door because the parking gods were shining on us. The place was nice looking with a cool bar and black tables and chairs with white table clothes. The walls have nice colors which went well with the wood bar and floors to round out the place. The menu has breakfast, lunch and dinner options which some are similar to Mexican with burritos etc. I wanted more of a sample of an ethnic South American dish because I can have Mexican items anywhere. I opted for the churrasco guatemalteco which is an 8oz Rib eye, Longaniza, grilled green onion, guacamole, fried black beans, rice and a salad. Just like a Mexican restaurant they start you with chips and salsa, the chips were house made and good. The salsas were one green and one red, the green was hot and tasty while the red was kind of bland and weak. The salsas were more like sauces with no chunks of anything and I used the green as hot sauce for my meal. The plate looked amazing with just a little of a few items for a nice variety of flavors. The Rib eye was thin cut and juicy/tasty. The Longaniza a sausage was amazing, like egg roll crashed into sausage with veggies and meat loosely packed, juicy and very tasty which was my favorite. The guacamole was good along with the rice and fried black beans. You get warm corn tortillas with the dinner which I made Steak, Guac, and bean tacos with some of the plate. The salad was very different and like a chilled potato salad with cubed potatoes, carrots, peas and beans which worked well. Overall I really liked the whole dinner plate and it was very good, what a great pick for something different and new. I'm sad that it's so far away because I would try more of the menu, yah I'm a fan. read more

What a pleasant environment BryAnna's is to walk into. Situated right on a corner with plenty of on-street parking nearby and a clean, well maintained, full-of-orgullo ("pride" en Español) appearance from the outside, you get a similar feeling once you walk inside. The dining room is well-lit, spacious, very clean with nice Guatemalan art and styling, and plenty of seating. Similar to so many other family-style restaurants, there's a little bar in the corner perhaps for guests waiting to be seated on a busier night. It is a BYOB establishment and I do not seem to recall a corkage or glass fee, and service regarding our brought-in beverage was pleasant and considerate. The menu is mostly Guatemalan but has Mexican offerings and no Salvadorean offerings except pupusas despite the claim on the marquee outside and inside the menu that it is a Guatemalan AND Salvadorean place. Service here was prompt, polite, friendly, and efficient. Food was prepared fresh and brought out quickly. For starters, a basket of fresh-made tortilla chips is brought out with green and red salsas. Just as an FYI, the red salsa is a slightly more sweet tomato salsa and not at all hot. Salvadorans and Guatemalans typically serve a more mild red salsa for things like pupusas and otherwise. They were tasty and light, but don't load up too much because the entrees are of ample sized and come with plenty of starches and more tortillas. For appetizers, my friends ordered a Guatemalan tamal which seems slightly uninspired and while they enjoyed it they were not incredibly enthusiastic about it. Because of my personal connections to El Salvador, I of course ordered a pupusa filled with queso blanco and loroco (a Salvadorean/Guatemalan herb) -- my favorite type of pupusa. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the pupusa because the masa (flour) used for it was flavorless as was the loroco. The cheese was a nice cheese and had the appropriate taste for what I expected. The pupusas was huge by pupusas standards but it was wet and could have used a little more time on the flat grill. The curtido (cabbage, carrots, spices, vinegar slaw) ,eaten with the pupusas, was good. For entrees, two of us ordered hilachas, shredded beef with potatoes simmered in Guatemalan creole sauce served with rice, and it was as expected. A bit more soupy than stew, it had a nice, mild flavor and was absolutely not salty so that was good. It could have used a little more meat than a little more potato but that was not a big deal. Our third dining partner had Pepian, a Mayan chicken stew with potatoes, green beans and imported guatemalan spices with a side of rice and tortillas, and seemed to be happy with it. Both entrees looked quite similar from the outside as you'll note in the photos. I should have ordered atol de elote (non-alcoholic corn drink) to drink, but passed on it because we BYOB'd. For dessert, we had delicious Guatemalan coffee which had a little bit of cinnamon taste to it. We also had rellenitos, moist, fried corn dough balls filled one with sweet frijoles and the other with sweet cream, and they were really good and, as expected, not too sweet. Our other dessert was uninspired and unattractive and tasted a little greasy. I so badly wanted to give bryanna's a better review but just couldn't. I'd be willing to come back and try some other things and maybe be able to update this review. read more

BYOB! Nuf said It's a nice Guatemalan restaurant. We came here for my husband's birthday a couple years ago and had a wonderful experience. We went back recently and it was slow but we still had fun. We churasco and pepian... topped it off with dessert. Hubby thinks it's pretty good. I wouldn't know what authentic Guatemalan should really taste like but I love the food here. As it turned out, on our last visit the very average food could not overcome the incredibly slow service or unbearably loud karaoke. If you like, read on, but my advice is just don't go. We came to the restaurant on a late Saturday night. We were a medium sized group. The table was set for our reservation. We arrived after a few of our friends. Their water glasses were filled (no ice--note this small point as you apparently have chosen to read further). After about 15 minutes, a server was spotted. Pointing to empty glasses, water came. Precisely an hour and 20 minutes after arriving our food was served. One has to admire when a restaurant is able to place a time clock on their service like that. Having time on one's hands, one can wonder if the karaoke performer ever takes a break, whether anyone has ever told him that he should try to stay on tune or consider taking long, very long breaks if he feels compelled to 'sing'. I might have asked the person sitting across from me, but I'm not sure he would have heard me or me him (very loud karaoke). One could consider games for 'next time': set a betting timeline for when the server will first show, or when the food will be served. (I'd suggest 1.3 hours) or order a pitcher of Margaritas and guess how many ice cubes fill it to the brim--winner gets the one true Margarita that just has to be in the pitcher. By now, the astute reader will have gathered there will be no 'next time'. Tip: when ordering guacamole, know that it's good. Place more than one order--portions are tiny. Tip: this restaurant is no longer BYOB. Tip: DO NOT order the pitcher of Margaritas. The pitcher is brimming with ice, very little else. (The ice does melt as one waits for their food). read more

I have never had El Salvador food - but I have traveled to Guatemala and bryannas food was great compared to what I had in Guatemala. Definitely try the pupusa - it is basically an arepa with filling consisting mostly of cheese. The restaurant makes everything fresh so the pupusa came steaming hot with melted cheese inside. Worth the visit and the wait! Its also extremely cheap at $3 a piece - great place to trek to on a weekend if you're not from the area. read more

Tasty, fresh, and authentic Guatemalan food! Called directly to order pickup, and it was ready when they said it would be. Everything was fresh and piping hot. The dining room was cozy and spotless, they mentioned returning to indoor dining at 20% capacity. Mask policy signs were up and sanitizer was at the door. The server was friendly and conversational. Pupusas were some of the best i've had, large and packed with fillings. The revuelta pupusa was tasty, and the bean & cheese was a great vegetarian option, as is the antojito sampler. The pulique beef stew was perfect for a snowy January day, as were the hot plantain and corn atole drinks. We were once regulars at El Tinajon for years, and missed them when they closed. Absolutely delicious! We were greeted warmly and the service continued be efficient and attentive. The room is inviting and comfortable and there's parking right next to the restaurant. We had chepes, a vegetarian combo and a chicken stew in a green sauce. We also had a beer and some sangria which was very reasonably priced. Complimentary chips with a black bean dipping sauce accompanied our drinks. Entrees came quickly and with homemade tortillas, sauces and a vinegary cole slaw to add to my cheese and loroco pupusa. As always the food here is amazing! More so the ambience to get to the food makes you realize that maybe, just maybe- this restaurant was made for great company! Now this is a BYOB so make sure you come prepared! Be it wine or beer, they got you with ice buckets, glasses and cork screws. Tostadas De Salpicon is one of the appetizers we choose and they are Beef marinated with lime juice, onions, mint leaves and radish, served on corn crisp tortilla. Now you may think these are "regular nachos" up until you realize these have a nice flavor blast of mint! Yes I said it, and how else would you have Salpicón? Absolutely my favorite when it comes to having an appetizer that stands out! Or maybe you would like to try their Yuca Con Chicharron? Oh yes now here it is! Fried casava with fried pork! The pork is crisped to perfection as te yuca fries are golden brown when brought. Now I don't know about you, but the occasional pork is on point! For our main appetizer (and trust me our main appetizer rocked) we ordered "Combo Brianna's" which easily Serves 3 to 4 peoples. Five shredded beef dobladas, five pupusas, choice of topping of mixto or veggie, five taquitos your choice of chicken, beef or potato, five pastelitos filled with pork and vegetables, served with fried cassava and curtido salad. All in all these are basically what filled us up. Easily on of my go to places when friends come from out of town and you are extremely familiar with the culture and food. So yes, one of my favorite and rare five stars because I know what I am getting as a person who's traveled a few times to Guatemala. And before you leave you need to try the atole' de Elote! On May 26th 2020,during the Corona Virus pandemic.I decided to order food from Bryannnas Restaurant of course for pick up as we can only order for pick up or delivery.I took a look at my recipient and noticed there is a charge of "2To Go Containers "$0.50 .I don't find it right to charge people for "To Go Containers".How are we supposed to get our food to go?,are we supposed to take our own containers?,on our hands?Restaurants should provide "To Go Containers" at no charge.It is very disappointing on how CHEAP they are charging customers EXTRA FOR "TO GO CONTAINERS" Iam not sure if they have been doing this for long or just started.Makes no sense to me.Next time I go I'll take my own containers,if there's a next time.Smh.. read more

I only ate there once and the service wasn't great at all and they took almost an hour to give our food so I will never Eat there again, but I will do take out we were out and decided to order some before getting home we ordered 4 popusas and she said 35 mins for pick up seemed like a lot but again the process must be Long and they always have so many people in there which explains the wait.
