Quaint little cafe in the Burlington arcade alleyway - its classic sunlit location at the corner gives just the French charm :) pastries are fresh-baked, which you can smell and see right behind the counter. Tried a sample of their matcha yuzu canelé, guava passion fruit madeleine, butter & salt madeleine, and earl grey canelé. Caramelized and crispy on the outside, chewy and rich on the inside, you just know this is their specialty. Enjoyed my hojicha cloud latte unsweetened, which was topped with perfectly light, airy cold foam. Some pastry flavors tend to sell out by afternoon so be sure to come early! Bu pastry Finally got to try this viral bakery. So let's see if they're pretty good eh or ew. I got a couple of drinks no ice and pastries to try. Their seasonal mango matcha was grassy, milky, and pretty matchay with soft mango pieces from the purée. Surprisingly wasn't getting much mango flaves tho. I got their black sesame latte hold the espresso and it was sweet, earthy, nutty, and milky with a light airy cream top. All the caneles were sweet and had nicely crunchy caramelized exteriors with a softer gooey interior and light cream fillings. The pistachio one had fruity nutty not too sweet pistachio flave cream and was topped with some nut bits. The matcha yuzu one had really strong citrusy yuzu flaves but wasn't getting much matcha. The black sesame's cream did have good black sesame flaves but I wish they could've added more. The sandwich cookies had soft delicate a bit gritty probably from the almond flour cookies with smooth fillings. The creme brulee one had a silky custard filling with a thin crisp sugary bruleed top. The chocolate hojicha one's cream was thicker, cocoay, rich, with a bit of roasty tea flaves and crunchy choco balls. The Madeline's were buttery, moist, and sweet. The strawberry matcha one had good earthy matchay flaves and was topped with a sweet strawberry glaze and tart freeze dried strawberry bits. The passion fruit guava one had sugary glaze, bright light fruity guava flaves and smooth tart passion fruity filling. The fig cheese financier was like the Madeline's but a bit denser and more gritty probably from the almond flour and was topped with pockets of cheesecake like spots and had jammy dried figs. Evereything here was a bit sweeter than expected which I did like and My faves were probably the black sesame latte and canele, creme brulee sandwich cookie, and passion fruit guava Madeline. It can get a bit pricey But everything is pretty yummy and overall pretty good. Cute shop. Ordered the matcha canele, triple chocolate Madeline and a chocolate raspberry Dacquoise They were decent. I wouldn't say out of this world, but they were good. The canele had a harder outer texture and soft middle. The Madeline was good, but I'm not an expert on French pastries. I've never had a Dacquoise before but it tasted kinda like a soft shortbread cookie with a Nutella like crème filling. Its not easy to find caneles around, so i was super excited to try this place out! They have such unique flavored caneles compared to the typical original canele. We tried the earl grey and matcha canele. I remember french caneles being more similar to a mochi texture, so these were different but it was still great! You got the crunch on the outside and soft and moist inside. Flavors for both were on point. The matcha did not taste burnt. The earl grey one was my favorite. For all of you who have been around Pasadena for a while (like decades), you will remember when the Burlington Arcade was a very quiet enclave of sleepy vendors. It is under a full blown renaissance now with some amazing shops and more on the way. And it's a very good thing because this old English knock off is unique and bloody beautiful and for a moment it seemed like its useful life was in jeopardy. But now it seems to be the backdrop to every other Instagram foodie video and business is bustling. Enter Bu Pastry Bar to add to the madness. Finally we get a Canalés and Madeleine specialist! We love both of those things and have enjoyed the specialty shops in Paris and finally we have something similar. Yes, just "similar", not quite as good...but hopefully one day. The effort and sincerity are there but the interior texture of the Canalés isn't quite there yet. Not custardy and airy enough and maybe that's their intentions but it's not my personal preference. The Madeleines are not quite Parisian quality either and taste more like little slices of pound cake, which isn't a bad thing necessarily, but just not very Madeleine-like. They're both delicious though so well worth trying but personally, as a bit of a traditionalist, I hope they keep tinkering with them until they can challenge the best ones in France. read more

(not pictured but there vanilla caneles is prob a 10/10, i could eat a dozen of them ) o also learned that a dacquoise is like a macaroon, and theirs is p solid. light and bit chewy exterior w/ a rich nutty black sesame butter creme filling. the chocolate madeleine was avg; tasted alot like a chocolate muffin. for drinks, tried the hojicha cloud, regular coffee cloud, and a caramel latte. the hojicha cloud was diff than the other hojicha lattes i had before- had a salty taste that pairs so well w the roasted nutty hojicha flavor!! not an expert coffee reviewer but the coffee also tasted p solid lol. overall highly recommend any of there caneles and the hojicha cloud drink also the owner and staffs were all so nice and service was p quick! seating is limited in store but there r tables outside in the hall. read more

However, the financier was very dry and fig and cream cheese madeleine just tasted sweet. Next time, I'm just sticking to the caneles. Also, overall, quite expensive. This is the Canelé spot, and you can't really find good Canelé anywhere else in SoCal, so very surprised to see one here. Their Canelé has a nice crispy texture out while soft and moist inside, kind of reminds me of what I had in Ginza Japan. Keep in mind this is a small boutique shop that handmakes their pastries in small batches at a time, so expect a wait unless you show up at the right time. Absolutely fantastic experience! The flavors were outstanding We tried four different canelé flavors, and each one was exceptional. The exterior had that perfect crisp caramelized shell, while the inside was incredibly moist and tender--just done right. We also sampled three different dacquoise flavors, and they were just as impressive--light, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I also ordered a hojicha latte with whole milk and less sugar--turns out it's made from roasted (cooked) matcha, and it was absolutely amazing. Super rich, smooth, and surprisingly flavorful. I always picked the thimble in monopoly and I felt sentimental value to these large thimble shapes pastries despite never having them. Growing up lower middle class, coming here wouldve felt like landing on boardwalk without enough money to build a house. Now, I'm still in the lower middle class, but I'm an adult with a credit card so I can make poor decisions and let future me worry about. I got four flavors to try them out and the vanilla was shockingly good. afterwards, I bit into the earl grey I had a brief moment of disappointment because it tasted the same. After masticating some more, I realized the ingredient used for the hard exterior coating is the same on all of these pastries and the center is where the different flavors lie. It's surprising something so hard in the outside can maintain moisture on the inside. Whatever they use to coat it, I might need to use it to layer my flat roof to stop the ongoing leaks. Vanilla was my favorite and I like honey so the brulee'd tasting exterior was also tasty to me. Earl grey and black sesame were also enjoyable but I felt the matcha and yuzu didn't match well. I like both of those flavors individually but it caused my mouth to feel confusion like I was taking a Tesla to the gas station and trying to figure out how to fit that nozzle into the charge port to get gas. Overall, phenomenal staff, amazing ambiance and really tasty treat but definitely a treat. As a person who eats things quickly, it's hard for me to have things that are slowly enjoyed. I saw the fear on my wife's face as I was consuming them and she uncomfortably sped up her eating pace to make sure she could get equal amounts of bites in. I'll be back once I pay off my credit card debt. read more

I saw something about this bakery on social media and once I saw black sesame and canele, I knew I had to go. There has been a slew of new bakeries opening in Pasadena that go viral and this one looks like it has the potential to too so I wanted to go ASAP! I didn't realize it was only their soft opening but we made sure to go their at opening hour and pretty much was compelled to try 1 of everything they had. I've never been to a bakery that specializes in candles and madeleines and both had unique flavors and a great bake. The owner, Maggie, introduced herself to us and recommended the cloud matcha which paired well with the madeleines. The store was quaint but decorated so cute (love the jelly cats!). Eunice was so sweet at the register too (I came back for 2 additional transactions for more treats to go). Can't wait to come back and try more flavors. The service was very disappointing. We originally ordered 3 canelas, and the server suggested we order 4 because we would get one for free. Based on that, we agreed and ordered 4. However, when it was time to pay and we asked about the free item, she immediately denied it and said the "free" part was just the box. Both my friend and I clearly heard her say we would get one free, so this felt misleading and dishonest. Instead of resolving the confusion, she denied everything and even took the box away, which made the situation worse. It's not about the money--it's about the principle and how customers are treated.
