The remodel on this place is amazing. When I went there before the re-do I remember it being kind of dark and it didn't really stand out amongst the many Thai restaurants in the area. But now it's a beautiful and somehow peaceful restaurant with amazingly fresh food and good flavors. It's an excellent date restaurant now, especially for people on a budget. This has become a favorite for my fiancé and I. You just can't go wrong with the food here. It is ALWAYS good. In the past the service hasn't always been good. One of the first times I called here for delivery the woman was extremely rude and short and I was so frustrated I ended up not even ordering. But this was months ago. Since then I have gotten great service even though we normally order for delivery/pick up. My favorite things on their menu are the curry puffs, fried rice, and pumpkin curry. Yum! b/c i'm procrastinating... the staff, super friendly and nice. but hydration is really important, and water came after we were seated, waitstaff came by to put a little plate on the table... we kinda had to flag someone down to take our order (after many do you think they're going to come take our order, well there's those other people, so they're going to have to come over here...) and even then, i had to ask -- again -- for water. i just feel like you shouldn't have to even ask for water. (it came the same time as the wine.) (solving two totally different problems.) food was good, the scallops portion could have had more (i don't remember the cost, so maybe it was fair), the crab fried rice could have had more pizazz, and i wished their drink selection was a little broader. decor was nice, though not super memorable. neighborhood is albany so all safe and boring kinda disney-ish. read more

There must be a thousand cheap thai places that are delicious. This restaurant is neither cheap nor delicious. As Sandra S. said on 4/30/12, the food is bland. The restaurant is quaint and relaxing and our servers were fantastic (we went for lunch), but it cost almost $30 for two lunch specials and a thai iced coffee to go. The food was bland and very much lacking in rich, flavorful broths and curries that one comes to expect from a good thai place. My tom yum soup tasted like chicken broth from a box with some lemongrass. The chicken in my curry dish was dry and unseasoned as well. This Thai food actually tastes Thai. It isn't crowded and the prices are fair. The menu is expansive and good for vegetarians as well as meat-eaters. However, their brown rice is AMAZING. I know, it's brown rice, but you will be raving, too, once you try it. read more

I honestly believe that the staff was IRRITATED that we were troubling them by coming in to their restaurant to eat. Maybe they had hot games of Words with Friends going or something because everyone seemed to put in negative effort, for us and the other tables around us too. Nobody got menus, they would bring water to one person at the table but nobody else so you had to ask for more glasses, the food was practically cold. The servers would come close enough to drop things off but not make eye contact or pause long enough to hear you if you asked for something. The Thai sausage tasted divine, even if I didn't understand the presentation or how I was supposed to eat it. I loved the green curry - not too thick and not too sweet. I also appreciated that the hostess sat us far, far away from the kids in the joint w/out us even having to ask - it's like she knew two adults w/out kids wouldn't want to hear the screeching of children on a Friday night after a long work week. i havent been to this place in like 8 years... and man has it gotten worse. the thai food here is not authentic at all. basil chicken (my mom asked for extra basil too) - okay our fault for not reading the description but i have never had GROUNDED chicken before. it was not bad tasting but i think it is much better with strips of chicken. it completely lacked the basil flavor and was too sweet roasted duck curry - probably the best of the night but there was barely any duck in it seafood noodles - forgot the name of it but it was nothing special either and again the sauce was too sweet... green curry lamb - how come we were never asked how spicy we want our curry? thai food is known for their spices... but again this curry just tasted sweet and the lamb was really gamey (and i eat a lottt of lamb too) i think we ordered 4 really different entrees but everything tasted the same. it seems like they just stir fry a big pot of eggplant, bamboo, and peppers and toss it into every single dish, pour the appropriate SWEET curry over, and put in very little meat. it was a very disappointing thai dinner. ive definitely experienced better read more

On my first visit I was dissapointed by the pad thai, so I figured that I would come back and try something new. I opted for the bbq pork, and damn I was happy. I have been on the hunt for good, no GREAT Thai in the El Cerrito/Albany area for quite some time. I have tried quite a few in the area, and am SO GLAD I came to Bua Luang for lunch today. Even though it was Saturday, they still do a lunch special with rice and a salad (even to go). I cannot remember for the life of me what I had - According to their website, its called the Basil "J" - veggies bamboo and a delish sauce. They substituted tofu for meat no problem. This is my favorite Thai restaurant of all times! I have been eating here for over a decade, followed them through a renovation, an expansion, and change in vibe (from hole-in-the-wall to sleek modern), and a price increase. And I'd follow them through far more! In 2004, my mom and I lived right around the corner and quickly became regular patrons. Now, it is the one place we make sure to go back too whenever I'm in town (even though my mom no longer lives around the corner). Reliably the food is good. Usually it's great, once or twice something has fallen a little flat. I personally love the basil salmon, the ginger chicken, the po taek, and the papaya salad. They have thai iced coffee and tea and a homemade limeade that is a perfectly intriguing sweet/salty/tart. For dessert, get the coconut ice cream... best I've ever had! The interior is comfortable and inviting, but it's the service that really makes them stand out. Everyone who works here is so nice and and careful about their work. I've been here at least 30 times over the years and never-have-I-ever had even one bad thing to say about the service. Seriously, give Bua Luang a try! read more
