Couple of good things and a couple of irritants. We had a business dinner of ten and had a lovely meal. The service was great and the view was amazing. Food is expensive but not out of line for the venue. We will definitely go again. One the other side of the coin, we spent over $1,000 on dinner and had to pay a 3% service charge for using a credit card? $63 steaks and still need a CC surcharge to pay the bills? Do people pay cash to avoid this? Is this a 1990's gas station? You are willing to lightly gouge the customer after a good dinner and leave a silly service charge as the parting thought? Is the revenue worth it? Second irritant was that the restaurant provides a parking voucher for two hours in their ramp. This is great! But in our large group, our dinner was long and the voucher was only good for two hours, so we all had to pay on our way out. Consider extending the three hours. read more

It was my first time trying The Statehouse, located inside The Edgewater Hotel. The views of the lake from the restaurant was beautiful! The staff was accomodating as well. In terms of the food, I thought that the quality could have been better for the price. But it was still pretty good, nonetheless. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes the most, haha. I would say my biggest gripe is with the beef wellington. The meat was a bit difficult to cut through, and the overall dish lacked a lot of flavor. I thought the roast chicken was better, but still pretty plain for what it is. We also ordered some cheese curds and calamari, but again, I would say the price doesn't really match up with the quality in my opinion. When you walk in from the street, you are already on the floor with the restaurant (floor 7) just walk to the back of the hotel towards the water. First time to Wisconsin, so had to get the cheese curds! They were very good! We went for lunch and got the blackened salmon and vegetables; it was incredible & perfectly seasoned. One tip, it does not come with a side, even though the menu says it does. I ordered a side salad and it was just mixed greens & balsamic. I asked to add tomatoes, cheese and onion and they were very gracious and did with no problem. The meal and service was perfect. And for dessert ... skillet cookie! YUM!!! If you need one reason to visit the Statehouse, let it be the absolutely striking view of Lake Mendota. The spacious dining room boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, a genius decision by whomever made it. The elegance of the Edgewater's rich history -- having been built in 1948 -- spills over into the restaurant, with modern elevated decor sprinkled throughout. The Statehouse's menu features trendy favorites as well as fine dining staples. I highly recommend the Fried Cheese Curds and the Beef Wellington. My only critiques come down to cook time on a couple of dishes -- the potatoes in the pork belly appetizer were undercooked and the salmon was slightly overcooked, just a tad dry. Small things to complain about, I know. But everything counts for a restaurant of this caliber... and this price tag. (You will pay a very large, pretty penny.) The servers were attentive and knowledgeable, helping with wine pairings and recommendations on the menu. We were in a group of eight. My aunt wanted to bring us to show us the beautiful view of the lake. We were very impressed with the views out the large windows. I think everyone was pleased with their food. I had the salmon BLT. It was a bit messy but delicious. The burgers were also quite messy. My husband had the chicken and berry salad, which he enjoyed. I found the service to be non-intrusive but a little too absent at times. We were there when it was not busy and several times there was no staff member present in the room. First off, I've been here about 5 times and always enjoyed it, but I will not be back. It was unbelievably loud at the onset, but we tried to ignore it. This was a special birthday for my partner. The hostess was very inviting and asked about it and wished them a happy birthday. After that point, everything went downhill. Our server was not attentive, didn't speak to us, or recognize the special occasion. Meanwhile we saw 3 other tables get congratulated on their anniversaries and/or birthdays and greeted with champagne. We waited 20 min before our waiter ever came to check on us to order , sat around with empty water glasses for the whole meal and had to get up to find another server to get water. Other tables had waiter constantly waiting on them and checking on them. We were served our food (pork chop and chicken) with no knives. Again, having to get up to find someone to get them while our server continued to not be found. The pork chop was drier than the Sahara as was the chicken even though the chicken was in a bed of au jus. Finally after finishing our terrible meal, we continued to wait around for 20 min without a waiter. He never came to check on us and I had to again get up to find another waiter to get boxes and the check. Finally the manager came over with boxes and apologized. Unfortunately for the price and quality of food, we will not be returning which is a shame as we used to enjoy dining here. You will get a great view wherever you sit and sometimes in the summer the Edgewater has live music. We started with the charcuterie board and brussels sprouts and cauliflower. The brussels sprouts and cauliflower were amazing, perfectly crispy, and the lemon aioli sauce was an amazing contrast. However, the charcuterie board was really disappointing, especially for a contemporary American restaurant in Wisconsin. The combination of cheese and one meat selection selection along with random fruits were not balanced whatsoever. The entrées, however were amazing, the burger was classic and perfectly done. Instead of the regular family Thanksgiving, we did a short trip up to Madison and went to the Statehouse for Thanksgiving dinner. This was an excellent choice in our mind as the food and service was exceptional. We didn't stray far from their specials as my wife had the turkey dinner. She said it was perfectly cooked and loved the Brussel Sprouts and Stuffing. I went with the 20oz Prime Rib and it was prepared to medium rare as I asked. Really enjoyed the green beans as the side. This is the nicest restaurant in Madison and it's where we go for graduations and special occasions. Celebrating my graduation, we came here on a Friday night and it was a lovely experience! We had cocktails and wine, the bourbon squash soups, beef Wellington and salmon. The salmon was absolutely incredible, absolutely recommend! I wasn't blown away by the cocktails, the pear one or the raspberry daiquiri. The chocolate cake is $13 for about the size of a brownie bite. Be aware that the portions do not match the prices, but the quality is very good for everything, from what I could tell! The ambiance is nicer, fancier, and it drives me nuts that people sometimes dress so slouchy for a nice dinner spot, so I would definitely dress up for The Statehouse! The tables and chairs are lovely, the lighting is great. If they need to change a table to round for 4-5 people, they bang the wood on the bottom and it's pretty loud and interrupts the dining room, but I get it. We had a wonderful Easter brunch experience. Can't wait to go back for more. The place was crowded and busy, but the staff was very attentive and friendly. We were lucky to have a table by the windows overlooking the lake. Our table enjoyed the 'mimosa sampler'. The plates were plenty full with food. The French toast slices were light and fluffy. It was plenty of whipped cream and fruit to complement the dish. The side of scrambled eggs was prepared perfectly, not overcooked or runny. The hashbrowns, prepared with some red and green peppers, we're also very tasty. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfectly salted; no need to add more salt. What I will order the next time will be the smoked salmon Benedict. It's a wonderfully balanced dish. The salmon had a nice smokey flavor, not a strong salmon taste at all. The eggs were also poached perfectly, with the runny yolk complementing creaminess of the sauce. Capers add a nice little bite to the whole dish. I had gone to the state house several years ago and did not have a good experience. Today's brunch experience was certainly a redemption. Each of the appetizers were delicious. For main course we had the lamb rack, seared salmon and garganelli pasta. The lamb was perfectly cooked. The salmon was seared so well and the sauce was tasty. For desserts we had the cookie skillet and that was gone in seconds. The mango panna cotta was so light and refreshing, and last but not the the least the chocolate cookie cake was just wow. While staying at The Edgewater Hotel we decided to try The Statehouse for brunch on a Saturday. We were pleased that they were able to accommodate our party of ten without a reservation and it was only a ten minute wait (looking back I think that was definitely a bad sign). However when we were seated we noticed that there were only two other tables of diners in the whole place, so it really shouldn't have even taken 10 minutes to seat us. It went downhill from there. Bottom line - the service was so bad that I will not eat there again. Positives: - The restaurant is stylish, comfortable, and has a beautiful view of the water. - The menu has a good selection of items for brunch. - The staff were friendly. - The food was good (if you don't mind waiting forever to get it). Negatives: - It literally took just under an hour for us to get our food. The wait, especially given that restaurant was almost empty, was outrageous and inexcusable. - We got our drinks relatively quickly, but no one came around to refill the coffee. - At one point we asked the waitress to just please bring out the dishes as they were ready instead of all at once, but she didn't do that, even with the sandwiches and salad. - Multiple tables that came in after us got their food well before we did. - When they finally got around to bringing our food, one person didn't get his, and it was a SALAD! When we pointed out that his was missing, the waitress was clearly surprised as she had obviously screwed up the order and never ordered his. - We ended up having to rush to get ready for the wedding we were going to that afternoon because of the horrible service. overall a good restaurant that overlooks lake mendota! i feel like they market themselves as a higher end restaurant but the service isn't quite up to that tier - it was fine/acceptable but didn't really go above and beyond. usually we like asking our server for recommendations but i felt like i couldn't really trust his advice (like why are you recommending a caesar salad out of all the salad options??). also I had to ask him to box up our cheese curds right after he took our dessert order, when this is something that most nicer restaurants will typically take initiative to do. cheese curds were tasty however and I liked the spicy ranch as a dipping. the combination of salad and seafood symphony as our entrees was very light and we definitely had room in our stomachs for dessert. I did enjoy the sauce in the seafood dish and everything was well toasted and grilled. I was kinda shocked that the server didn't bring out a separate bowl to put our clam/mussel shells in tho -- especially at such a nice restaurant. dessert was delicious, loved the caramel ice cream. it was basically a pizookie but was a good way to end out dinner. also for the value in pricing, I don't necessarily think it's worth it either read more

The service was friendly and quick, and we were seated at a table by the window with a great view of Lake Mendota. The food was quite delicious. We started with the Seared Tuna Tatake and the Spanish Octopus, and both were excellent. We then had the Statehouse Filet and the Grilled NY strip. The Filet was excellently grilled, so soft, and at perfect temperature. The grilled NY Strip in comparison was quite the workout to cut honestly, but it was still a nice medium rare. The reason I dropped a star is cause the cocktails are in need of improvement. They do not taste bad, but at the same time, they do not taste great either. This place was nice. We came for Easter Brunch. Our table had a beautiful view of the lake. Biggest downfall is that we had two vegans in our party and no vegan options. Our server was a doll and asked the kitchen what accommodations they could make and they were VERY minimal. It was very kind of them for trying. I had the cinnamon roll to start. I was disappointed. It had an eggy taste and the frosting was not sweet enough. Had a sourness from the cream cheese frosting. I had brioche French toast for my main course. It was very good. It was 4 pieces and came with fresh berries, whipped cream, and two slices of bacon. Very good size of dish and thought the price was very fair. I may come back in the future. Ate here for a solo dinner while attending a meeting. The ambiance and view by the window was a vision of water heaven. Absolutely stunning. I was wearing a suit jacket as it was very cold inside. In fact I was freezing as the vents are directed toward the table. So let's talk about the service: I can't say that the waiters are attentive. In fact it took awhile for someone to come over to my table and I witnessed other new table guests experiencing the same thing. Water was poured, but I was surprised by having no complimentary bread offered. I ordered a beer with high % alcohol content that should have warmed me up but that frigid air kept me to a slow sip. Oh, this took some time to arrive also. Next: My starter which was supposed to be grilled octopus arrived already dissected totaling about a 2 inch tentacle. Those diagonal cuts can really fool the eye, but I wasn't impressed with the texture or flavor of the entire plate. If you are a true lover of seafood and enjoy food that will make your taste buds dance, then skip this dish. The Main Dish: I ordered the New York Strip Steak, but looked like I received only a portion of it. It wasn't bad, but also not memorable. Dessert: I went with the Cookie in the Skillet. We've dined at the Statehouse in the past and it was always good. But last night the food was 'off.' We started with the lobster bisque. The soup was too thick ( e.g.could stand up a spoon in it), and had no pieces of lobster. Plus, lobster bisque generally has a tad of sherry but this soup had a dollop of orange oil on the top. Strange and not tasty. My husband had the walleye fish which came deep fried and almost burnt. Generally, the server will say how the fish is prepared. I guess our fault for not asking...Our server was kind, but looked like she may have been in high school? (other employees had to serve the booze). So she may have been inexperienced. My salmon was mushy and the asparagus way over cooked. Despite the food, the ambience is lovely and the staff very attentive. For the price it was disappointing. read more

I was staying at the Edgewater recently for the weekend and went down for a Friday fish fry. Both of us ordered it. We were genuinely impressed by the quality of the dinner. The fish was crispy and moist on the inside. The house made tarter was excellent and really wanted a recipe for it. We enjoyed the fries and the slaw as well. Great quality and flavor overall. The plates did look like someone had thrown the food on though - not pretty. My Madison Manhattan was well balanced, if a little pricey. The next morning BF had breakfast there and he found it to be just okay. It was large, but a little bland. The lake view is not to be beat. The decor is understanding elegance. read more

I am not sure what is up with the bad reviews. I went there a couple of weeks ago and had a great brunch here. First of all, the views are amazing. It was a pretty cruddy day, but I could still see the awesome view of the lake. The place also seemed a little upscale and fancy. As for the food, it was pretty good. I went with the country fried steak benedict which I haven't seen anywhere else. I also went with the traditional bloody mary which was good too. I like to see interesting local places do well. It makes me want to stay at this hotel and wine and dine! I will probably be back for dinner! read more
