Buck Wild is not typically a place on my list. It has all the makings of "tourist trap". I have two sisters who like to visit; one comes approximately three times a year. Well, after a night of drinks and fun at our normal stomping grounds she decided it would be a good idea to ride a mechanical bull. Honestly, I'd never even noticed this spot before. They certainly get a large crowd and have lots of drink selections all seemingly geared towards visitors. We were there long enough for my sister to fall off the bull. My wife and I stopped in Buck Wild during a recent trip to Austin. We were there around 10:30 on a Saturday night. There was a really fun vibe and the employees were great. My reason for my rating is the mandatory gratuity that was included in my bill. I ordered a round for my wife and I. I have no problem tipping well, and would have probably tipped between 18-20 percent. Don't make it mandatory, especially if you aren't crafting a drink. I had a mixed drink, my wife had a beer. I immediately refused to get another drink there (even though I enjoyed my first one), and if a bar is that concerned about their employees wages pay them more. read more

I'm very disappointed to be writing this review as buck wild was my go-to bar for close to 5 years. Last night I decided to stop by for a bull ride and shot, what buck wild is known for! First off, bull was out of service. Hey, it happens, no worries. However, what I really have an issue with was the staff over charging my friends and myself for drinks. Here's how it went. I ordered 4 pickle shots. These are advertised as $5 each on the giant board behind the staff. I am given said pickle shots, and then given my bill, which reads $37. When I ask the bartender about how the math ain't mathing, he calls me broke and said I should be able to pay for the overcharge. LOL????? After convincing him to charge me the correct amount, I still notice my bill is $4 higher than it should be. (Ya, I'm a stickler. I don't pay for something I'm not getting). He then tells me it's the auto 20% gratuity they add. Hmm... tell me why 5 years I've come to this bar, and never had auto gratuity added? Seems like a pretty shady scam they were doing for Halloween people to get drunk people to double tip. Regardless, I will stay far away from this bar going forward. I do not recommend to anyone who wants an HONEST bar in Austin. Also, stop with this auto gratuity shit, nobody wants to pay double for being handed a single drink. read more

Buck Wild is a fun and entertaining bar that is a step up from many of the grunge lining Dirty Sixth. With a bull, punching machine, and a few other games it ends up being a pretty fun bar. The staff is very friendly and the drinks were good. They have a VERY large drink menu with tons of variety. It tends to be less crowded whenever we're there and is more of a relaxed bat atmosphere compared to some of the others nearby. Definitely not the bar to go to if you're looking to dance the night away but still a great time every night we go out to it. read more

A fun place to play some games, ride a mechanical bull, and have a choice of some pretty wild and cheap drinks! My wife and I stopped in here for a quick drink. It was in the middle of the bar night so we weren't sure what to expect. Walking into this place, it was really loud, people were lined up for the mechanical bull, and playing different games throughout the bar. We snagged a spot at the bar and were in awe of the massive menu up on the wall behind the bar. Tons of different dessert drinks, shakes, and other dairy-based boozy cocktails. After a day of drinking and eating, we weren't too keen on trying one of these drinks as it may have churned our stomachs. It was a big bummer though because they all looked great, so we'll have to come back when we're less full! Since we wanted no part of the specialty drinks, our server Hunter, was nice enough to lead us in a different direction of cheap beer or liquor. They had a special going on that night where well drinks were $2 a piece! What a steal! We had a few of those and had some brief conversation with him, because I'm sure we looked "touristy", and bounced out of there too the next bar. Boozy Milkshakes and a mechanical bull...what more needs to be said? We stumbled here on a freezing night after checking out a few other places and this was by far our favorite of the all. We came on a day when it was 19* out, so the place was pretty empty, which we didn't mind. The large menus on the wall was kinda of intimidating because of how many options there were but by far the best thing we had was their 'Cookie Monster' boozy milkshake. If you like oreo shakes, you'll love this one because it's made with real ice cream and has no alcohol taste whatsoever. The cold weather didn't deter us one bit, we had a couple of em because they were so good. The drinks did take some time to make, so glad we got to experience it when it wasn't busy. I rode my first mechanical bull, and gotta say, I had a lot of fun. Was far from good at it, but enjoyed it regardless. $10 a ride though, pretty steep, and not something I'd do reguarly. The pop a shot was hella fun too, and that's more affordable at $2 a game. If you pay via apple pay, it's a $8.10 charge for 4 games. Oh my gosh! What a cool place! We took a break from the Pecan St. Festival to get a frozen drink and a/c. The bartenders were friendly and attentive. The bar is a classic "old Austin" vibe with a bull ride, great mix of all genres of music, millions (okay, not that many but close) of drinks on the menu and fun people to meet. Great place! One of the first bars I went to during my Austin trip and loved the fast service from the bartenders. Everyone's really friendly, although some guy bartenders were salty for no reason. Go to the girls and give them great tips! They are all sweet and genuine! They offer bull rides for 3 tries for $10. Not too fast or crazy so great for newbies like me. Lots of people on a Friday night, but everyone's nice and friendly! Clean bathrooms and very open space bar which is great. I highly recommend coming here! We went 3 nights- the option of frozen drinks, floats, and boozy milkshakes was really nice since it's so hot. Our bartender each night was Alex, wearing his black cowboy hat; fast, friendly, and efficient service (he's the reason we gave it a 4 instead of a 3- the spoiled garnishes visible in the cooler and one of the other bartenders snacking on olives while working were turn-offs). They can afford to omit a few drinks - that'll hopefully increase their profitability and cut down on waste. Hiring more bartenders like Alex will help, too! read more

Came on a solo trip to Austin and while walking up and down 6th street I came across Buck Wild. The crowd was lite and it seemed chill so I decided to stay and get a drink. I had a great time, but then I got lucky. * * * No, not that way! Buck Wild is not a pick up place. People come with large groups of friends whom they socialize with. Later on, as the night progresses, you get the standard telephone poles. Telephone Poles are wandering males plowed out of their minds, hoping to find women, or find fun or find something. They are called telephone poles because they just stand there. But mostly this is a place for good buds, either male or female. It is a place to enjoy life with the people you like and love. I will talk about my own good luck in a minute, But first the lowdown on Buck Wild itself. * * * Buck Wild is a shot bar. Yuppies do craft cocktails. Undergraduates do shots. Craft cocktails are generally better than shots, but this is not a hard and fast rule. There are shots out there that are Absolutely to Die For. There are craft cocktails out there that should send their bartender to the Drinkmeister's Hall of Shame. You drink craft cocktails in a mellower room than you drink a shot. But once you change your expectations concerning the ambiance, a case can be made for drinking in either place. Sixth Street shots range from the magnificent to the foul. Some are intentionally foul because the customers want to be shaken up. (Hey, when I was an undergraduate, we paid good money for Velvet Cups - which were great silver trophies filled with champagne, beer and stout. Those did not stay in your stomach long.) I have had much worse than a Velvet Cup on Sixth Street. I have had much better too. The selection of shots and shot alternatives at Buck Wild is vast. One whole section of the menu is adult milkshakes. They have a lot of them. Samuel C. kills for adult milkshakes. The two I had earned grades of B and D. A Pink Squirrel (Chocolate Hazelnut incongruously colored pink) was a comforting pleasure. I would happily have this again. An Orange Julius Caesar (Creamsicle Orange Vanilla) was unpleasant. But vanilla ice cream and booze is vanilla ice cream and booze. I got my Orange Julius Caesar down. * * * The primary source of entertainment at Buck Wild is watching patrons ride a mechanical bull. This is where the name of the bar comes from. Mechanical bulls can hold my attention for maybe two hundred and seventy seconds. After that, the joke gets old. They have sports on TV although nobody watches. They have some arcade games which a few people use. There is people watching, which is always good on Sixth Street. And then they have the dance floor. The Dance Floor, heh heh. * * * Buck Wild is not a serious dance club. If you want major dancing with people who come to majorly dance, You want to go to Barbarella on Red River or the Container Bar on Rainey. All-out in-your-face merge-with-the-music dancing is my idea of an outstanding night downtown. But Buck Wild does have a fine dance floor, a great sound system and they play some great pop and hip hop. Usually no one pays attention because they are watching the bull. What you need is some live wires in the club to gravitate to the floor and start dancing. I got double lucky. In the half empty club of the nine o'clock hour, there were two parties. One, a bachelorette party, were wholesome UT women in matching lumberjack shirts, one of whom was a gymnast. She really wanted to dance and her friends were drunk and happy enough not to object. So the whole group migrated from the bull to the dance floor and started circle dancing. Then four African American guys showed up who could dance up a storm. For one solid hour, it was major moves city. Samuel C. was in there with the major moves. When these two groups left, the dance floor was as deserted as an empty blimp hanger. But for one spectacular hour, a fine time was had by all. * * * Mostly, Buck Wild is about talking to your friends, watching the bull, and shooting a kaleidoscopic array of mixed drinks. Kaleidoscopic arrays of mixed drinks are a good thing. I usually hang out just off Sixth Street, at places like the Mohawk or Russian House or Barcelona. But I can totally see the appeal of Buck Wild on Sixth Street itself. Find the drinks you like in the top half of their taste distribution. Bring your favorite company, or luck into a dancing crowd. Set up everything just right, and you can have a blast here. read more

The staff was extremely fun, and gave us multiple rides on the bull. There is also so much space here. Super cool idea, average execution. We went in during around 4 or 5 pm on a Friday and they had 2 bartenders working. There were only a handful of other customers there during our visit. It took me awhile to choose from the menu but once I did, I had to ask for my drink 2 more times before it finally arrived. The bartender told me that it was only her 6th shift at this location and to please be patient. I totally understand that and gave her the benefit of the doubt. My drink however, was not that great. I chose the Blackberry Bramble snow cone. I don't know if I would get that again or even a snow cone because it was very difficult to eat/drink. The snow ball itself was frozen solid and then the liquor was poured over it. Before I could enjoy the drink I had to wait for the snow cone to get soft enough to mix in with the alcohol. I can see how this would be enjoyable later in the evening with a mechanical bull, basketball games and photo booth. read more
