Being a longtime resident of Sweetwater, I've dined at Buck's many times. Some meals were great and some not so much. I recently read a Facebook comment that Bucks had closed permanently, so on my next trip to the southside I went there and found notes on the doors that confirmed they have closed for good. read more

I underestimated this place when we first passed it on a road trip. My bad. It was delicious. Great service. The complimentary rolls are soft and sooo good. My hub and I shared a burger snd a chicken fried steak sandwich. The chicken fried steak was flavored well, breaded well, meat was tender. The burger was char-broiled, yum! Both sandwiches comes with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion and pickles. They are served with your choice of side. I got onion rings which were the bomb, they were the crispy flaky kind. The breading held on the rings. The crinkle fries were seasoned well,just were delivered room temperature. The cheese on the burger was not melted, but keeping the top bun on it and being patient, it melted slightly enough. My hub raved about their fountain coke. Great experience and cost the same as a nearby sandwich chain. read more

we first went to Schlotzky's but after seeing the sandwiches were $10 and the combo was $15 we decided on a REAL restaurant so went to Buck's. Wife and I shared a cheeseburger and chicken fried steak sandwich, also had fries and onion rings. All really good. Dinner rolls and butter before meal were really good as well...and the fountain Coke was a nice refreshing drink to wash everything down. read more

Well I listened to the reviews and ordered the chicken fried steak. Very good. I also did not listen to reviews or I would not have come here to begin with. Wow. These people do lot not know how to run a restaurant. Mac and Cheese was room temp. Hope I don't get sick. Out of half of the sides. One out of 30 tables had a seating. Tried this place again a week later. Same review as before, the food is just so so. This time I got the salmon with a side order of steamed broccoli and sweet potato. The broccoli was raw like you just poured hot water over it and let it sit on the counter and get cold. The sweet potato was cold and the butter was whipped butter, so it was already soft and not real butter and it wouldn't even melt on the sweet potato or the broccoli. The salmon tasted OK, but it was cold as well. The others in my party had the same experience with their food. The only plates that seem to be good was the chicken fried steak or the grilled shrimp, which by the way it comes over pilaf rice so do not order that as a side in case your waitress neglect to tell you as in our case. How does double rice on your plate sound, great if that's what you like. For appetizer the southwest egg rolls were pretty decent. The waitress was attentive and kept our drinks filled and asked if we needed anything multiple times. The service is really good. I think the problem is in the kitchen. I do not think I will be coming back I've had enough. read more

Long story short, the food that was left in the trays for the buffet was abysmal. All of the meat was dry and had no flavor. It looked like it had been sitting for quite some time so I was actually concerned about eating it. I did, however, and I survived. The food tasted exactly like it looked, bland, and dry. There was only one waitress serving a significant amount of tables, so although she was trying, it was hard for her to keep up and provide good customer service. The chicken fried steak is pretty amazing. We have eaten here twice while visiting Sweetwater. Tonight I had a steak and potato. The steak was so so, baked potato was good, I also had fries. They were ok and needed to be cooked little longer. My friends had salmon, chicken fried steak, and grilled shrimp. All in my party were pleased with their entrees , but were not blown away. Service was good and the kept the tea and lemonade flowing. Plenty of seating for large groups and they even had a secluded bar if a cold beer or drink would hit the spot. The staff apparently thinks this is the 50s and must practice segregation, but against Hispanics. My husband, his brother and another family member came to eat here, and were immediately treated with attitude. They were sat in the front (a very hot area and after being in the heat all day they prefer the air conditioning) my brother in law very politely asked to be seated in the middle where there was plenty of open tables, and the staff seemed appalled that he even thought that was okay. The service to all the people around is great, they are kind to them. But treating my family badly. And conveniently they are all white. 10/10 don't recommend to any Hispanics. read more

Decent food. Everything was very very bland, guess they don't know how to use seasoning. Service wasn't that good, we asked for 3 to-go boxes, got 2. Prices on the menu and receipt are different. 3 - 5 extra cents PER ITEM. Added up to roughly 5 bucks afterwards. Absolutely insane. Ambiance was ok. Cold and kinda crappy honestly. Okay let me clarify this with first off we were in a larger than normal group about 10 people, but this is a barbecue restaurant that most of the food is on the line where they weigh the barbecue and you get your own sides. The barbecue was okay but the service was horrible we had four or five servers don't know which one was actually ours because it kept switching off all we needed was the usual keep our drinks full and bring a napkins. My wife has decided to go vegetarian so she ordered a $9 salad and a $4 baked potato the salad look like someone had gone down the street to a Dollar general and found an old bag of lettuce with a couple of carrots in it starting to wilt and dumped it in a bowl. Her salad didn't come out till most of us had been eating for 25 minutes, some of the chicken strips took 25 minutes longer than the rest of our meals to come out. Just for clarification all barbecue ordered comes off of a hot food line that they weigh and put on a plate including the chopped barbecue sandwich that took 25 extra minutes to come out in all we spent close to 2 hours at this restaurant the last 30 minutes was trying to get checked out they were having issues with their technology some of us had cash and the rest found there was a ATM in the attached bar game room so they got cash this will definitely be scratched off the list in the 5 years I've lived in Lubbock and driven through Sweetwater this was the only time we stopped here and we won't ever do it again. Oh my goodness, did someone say BBQ? This brisket was flavorful, good portions and very moist. Customer service is on point, food is one that you'll enjoy and they also offer cooking your brisket/ etc for you for a small fee. Ambiance of the place is one of comfort and smell of good home style cooking. Everything is made from scratch. For pricing, very affordable. Thank you for the great food and memories. Soo I checked out Bucks because it was Nextdoor to the hotel I stayed at while working in Sweetwater. I was hoping that I could find a decent watering hole within walking distance. The food was gross, I picked the 1 meat plate buffet, little did I know it's not a buffet, but a small portion of brisket, bland macaroni/potato salad and dry corn bread. I've had better food at a gas station. For there being less than 10 people in the whole warehouse of a restaurant, the ambiance was dead. Only 1 tv in the whole place. Don't waste your money here. First, outside is dated and dirty, but as they say do not judge a book by its cover. Food was good. I had the 8 oz sirloin and my wife had the chicken fried steak. Mine was cooked to a perfect mid-rare and hers was crunchy crust and tender steak. Seasoning is an issue in that both needed more salt. Now the problem, service. Slow, not friendly and ignored my wife. There is no drink menu (why in the world not?). So, old fashion is always a good go to. I ordered and the waitress completely ignored my wife. Figured it maybe just the first go, but each time she would not even ask my wife if she would like a drink. Service was bad! I would recommend this place only for the food. Currently waiting on table because our party of 8 isn't complete yet the restaurant isn't half full. While they have a policy to only seat complete parties I'm thinking if the restaurant is fairly slow the policy could be bent. Also, the young lady at the counter needs to be less grumpy. The restaurant was clean. Greeted immediately by the new and very friendly hostess. The service was marginal, noticed none of the waitstaff seemed very happy interacting with the customers. Not that they were rude, just somewhat expressionless. Ordered the Sampler Platter for an appetizer, somewhat pricy for the quantity, but it was good. This place has gone downhill and I will not return without an influx of change and reputable reviews. I ordered steak fingers, macaroni & cheese, and a baked potato. The breading on the steak fingers was flavorless and the steak was tough. The macaroni and cheese was bland and grainy. The baked potato came with two butter containers. One of them had been opened and clearly partially used prior to being brought to me. How does that happen? How does a partially used butter packet get from someone's table to the kitchen to my plate to my table? The insides of the facility are so rundown and there was a cold draft somehow blowing from the back room into the bar in the middle of the building. Great service. Very poor food. My friend and I sent our steaks back twice. I'm not sure why the cooks were struggling with medium. We kept getting rare. We finally gave up, paid for our drinks and went home and ate cereal. (Also, the baked potatoes were also cold. The butter did not even melt.) Very disappointing. We won't be back. First time to eat at Buck's and I was mildly surprised that the steak was cooked to perfection, the vegetables weren't soggy. The steak was well flavored and the grilled shrimp were also well seasoned and cooked just through so they weren't tough and chewy. The service was good and the servers were friendly. All in all, Buck's is a very good place to stop for a steak dinner and well worth the price paid. I'll definitely return for another meal. read more

Decent brisket and sausage plate from their buffet style service. Employee cuts and weighs your meats. You serve your own sides. Wasn't crazy about the flavor of their BBQ sauce. It had a sweet and vinegary flavor. The sides; potato salad, mac salad, coleslaw, pinto beans, boiled potatoes, cornbread. Potato salad and coleslaw were the best. Cornbread was pretty bland and dry. Chicken fried steak was ginormous and tender but lacked seasoning. The young female server was very friendly. Being in The Bible Belt was obvious with gospel music playing and then a sermon. Nothing wrong with that, just different and peculiar with a bar in the same restaurant. Glad we have a First Amendment and refreshing to see it utilized. The service was excellent, as was most of the food. Huge portions hot and freshly cooked. The baked potato was slightly under cooked and the cocktail sauce was not to my taste. Neither of those would keep me from going there again. There was a large group of people dining there that seemed to be part of a club. Very, very ordinary, no frills, dated furniture and buffet bar. Dimly lit buffet area. We were led to our table by a young gal who then brought our drinks and menus which were laminated and very 'used'. Then our waitress came and quickly recited her speech about how the buffet worked. We caught most of it. We then spotted another guy who just stepped up to the buffet so we kinda fell in line behind him. We got 1,2 or 3 meat choices (which we'd already had to tell our waitress before going up there as that determined the cost of your meal. 2 meats was $18.99). A big guy from the kitchen came out to cut up the meats we chose. The rest was very basic; cornbread which was cold and dried out as it was near a fan, unexciting coleslaw, potato salad and Mac salad, baked beans then small containers of pickles, white, sweet onions and cherry peppers. We then sat down and ate. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. Brisket was pretty fatty and the sausage was ok. ( they also had turkey, ribs and jalapeño sausage. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant, but it was pretty busy by the time we left, so the locals must like it. read more

I had their sliced brisket. Sorry Bucks, but YUCK! The meat was a combo of slimy, dry, pastey and fatty at the same time. Saice was not good either. Has coleslaw, slim slaw is what i call it. Also yuck. I had the potato salad. Nearly lost my stomach. I have eaten a lot of stuff but that was some of the worst i have ever tasted. They need to go out to DFW and get some real pointers on quality if QQB and sides. Servers are nice so i gave them 2 stars due to service. I stopped to try some Sweetwater BBQ I got the sausage and brisket with beans and macaroni salad. They bring your meat and the side are buffet style. The Texas trend seems to be like warm bbq meat and room temp sides. The beans and macaroni salad had good flavor but the temperature was not as chilled for a side as I have had at other places. This is a local favorite. I am used to brisket being slices against the grain and served sliced this was more of a pot roast texture and flavor. Buffet service makes it hard to control temperatures so that was the disappointment. So I wouldn't get the brisket again I would try the steaks they are known for or the ribs or chicken. It has live music on the weekends and sound like great entertainment venue. read more

3 of us stopped to eat here because it was close to the hotel. Not a great choice! Onion rings had to be sent back because they were ice cold. Hamburgers were way cold and overcooked, should have sent the cold fries and "straws" back (jalapeño and onions). BTW there was only 8-10 people so we don't understand the cold food! I had the Catfish and Shrimp with rice pilaf. Shrimp was overcooked, baked potato was kinda warm but not hot enough to melt the butter. The catfish, broccoli and rice pilaf were yummy. read more

This place has a large venue space & two other spaces as the restaurant side. We went for the buffet on a Saturday morning & business was slow so we didn't mind. The buffet was self serve but the quality of the meal was not all that great. I was expecting grilled barbecue but to my my surprise it seemed steamed. It was a decent filler but in no way would I consider their food barbecue as I had something more like Franklin Barbecue in mind when it came to Texas. Maybe that was a stretch but at least something similar in style would've been fine. The flavors weren't there either and I was deeply disappointed. U let me down Texas! This place was a surprise! We had dinner here after a long road trip from Denver. It was close to our hotel so we checked it out and the food was really good. I mean of course you gotta get fried food in the south haha so I got the chicken with the gravy and dayummmm the cheese curds with ranch dressing were good. Hmmm... Don't know where to start. Tons of staff but no leadership. We have 4 or 5 servers trying to wait on us but none of them can seem to get it right. Also, look at the photo I posted of the menu. A steak that's just a few ounces larger cost twice as much? I'm not alone in this suffering. Every table around us has had obvious issues. One table asked to speak with a manager and they said he's off until Monday. (This is Friday). Maybe it's typically better than this but I kinda doubt it. By the way, the staff was great.
