Hands down THE BEST BBQ in these parts of Texas!! We were passing through on our way home to Austin when we found this adorable place on Yelp. You are immediately welcomed with the fragrance of yummy BBQ and a friendly smile at the ordering window. My mouth watered anticiapting seeking my teeth in the highly recommended ribs! And once our order arrived I was in heaven with the flavors of the sweet and tantalizing taste of amazing BBQ sauce and the tender meaty ribs literally melted in my mouth. We got the opportunity to meet the owner, Gaylan and he told us they started out as a hobby 19 years ago and his business just grew from there. And not to toot his own horn, but bragged a out his wife's homemade Key Lime pie. And I have to say, Key Lime pie is our most favorite dessert...so we know the best and THIS place has it!! Of course, Boo devoured the pie but not before I could snag a bite or two...and it was heaven. Great way to end our meal with a nice light with a hint of lime citrus key lime pie. We drove through Sweetwater and stopped at Big Boy's for lunch. They are truly dog-friendly, our big boy golden enjoyed covered patio. The nicest people and great barbecue. You must try their sausage and potato salad. Definitely will be back and highly recommend! read more

We ordered brisket and sausage, as well as the limited sides offered. The brisket was bland, dry, and chewy. I couldn't eat it, although my Wife was hungry enough to finish it. The sausage had an odd texture but was edible. The BBQ sauce is nothing special. The sides, potato salad and coleslaw (they don't have much) were pretty average. Or about what you'd find from your local grocery store. The business also needs to do a better job cleaning the interior, such as the chairs, tables, condiments, etc. Some look visibly dirty/sticky. Considering the price and quality, I wouldn't go here again. EDIT - Reply to owner: Focusing on the quality of the food, at the time of our visit, it was 2-stars. Franklin BBQ is excellent, but even they aren't always perfect. Are you saying your food is always amazing? Seasoning isn't ever messed up, food sits out for a while, poor prep, etc? First time there. Tried a chopped brisket sandwich. The hours are kind of odd, but the staff was very accommodating and friendly. Definitely a local's kind of place with a dark decor. As for the sandwich. I had never had a brisket sandwich with raw onions and pickles and sauce, all of which I assembled -- it was a to-go order -- but it was very good, and I would get it again. The brisket itself was not the best I have had, but it was good. The combination of the"fixin's" and brisket made for a very tasty and memorable sandwich. It was alright. I felt like the price of the food was too high to the quality of the food. I got to try a little of everything (except desserts). Brisket - wish it was whole slices instead of bits and pieces Sausage - a little on the dry side for me Ribs - good BBQ sauce - tasty Potato salad - good Coleslaw - not great Beans - really good Sweet tea and lemonade were good All in all, I was not impressed and still wanting for some good BBQ. Just stopped on my way back from Lubbock to Abilene, and this was on par with the big name bbq places you'd find in Austin, Dallas etc. The brisket sandwich was excellent, the owner told me he doesn't use smokers and you can taste the meat due to the high heat cooking technique. The key lime pie was the best pie I've had, you have to try it. Even if you're not a key lime person. Excellent and the ribs were very tasty. We will be back. Very friendly place and great food. Don't be put off by the exterior of the building. It was worth going. The brisket sandwich was very good. It has pickles and onions and sauce the has a slight bit of heat. The lunch special included slaw and a drink which made it a good deal. read more

The brisket is moist and well smoked. The potato salad and Cole slaw is just tangy enough and just sweet enough. The jalapeno poppers are wrapped in bacon and grilled to perfection. The buttermilk pie and the key lime pie are...legendary. Put this place on a must stop list! read more

Thanks to the other great Yelp reviews, we stopped here on our drive between Dallas and Lubbock. (It's just a couple blocks off the interstate) This place is the real deal! Great BBQ, served with a smile. I got a sliced brisket sandwich plate with potato salad and my husband got the rib plate with beans and potato salad. The meat was flavorful and tender and we both loved the potato salad. I really think the bun on my sandwich was home baked. It was a great touch. Definitely give this place a try. *As a side note, this business is very good about sanitation and mask wearing. While on our way to the perfect place, the perfect playyyyyace, we drove through the area and after using my mobile Yelp app decided this was the place to stop and grab a bite. Feeling all Texassy, we ordered the standard brisket, sausage and fixins. We also ordered the Key Lime Pie that everyone raves about. My fellow yelpers did not disappoint, the Key Lime Pie was smack your momma good and the brisket was yummy. My sweety said he loved the sausage so again snaps for my Yelp app for helping us find a great place to dine while traveling. The decor was interesting and not what we expected based on the rather plain outside. The service was good and the restaurant was clean and well kept. Where it might be lacking in curb appeal, skipping Big Boy's would be a mistake! We stopped in on the way home from a camping trip and found their bbq absolutely delicious. Some of us had the combo sandwich and I had the two meat plate. Both had brisket and sausage with a nice, sweet bbq sauce. Prices are great and the hospitality was perfect. Definitely another favorite stop on a cross-Texas trip. read more

Review for June 30, 2012 There was a time when we would ONLY stop at Schlotzsky's Deli at this same intersection near SH70 and IH20 when passing through Sweetwater, TX. But no more! Once we found Big Boy's BBQ (Thanks to Yelp!) - we are also swearing off the chain-food for good! So while I have also tried my share of Texas classics from the BBQ stratosphere, Big Boys represented Sweetwater in solid fashion with their BBQ brisket, pork ribs and potato salad that we tried. Their food is ridiculously inexpensive, to wit: $9.98/lb for Brisket, sausage, ribs, or smoked turkey. $5.55 for brisket, sausage or pork sammy, $5.65 for 1/2 chicken and ONLY $7.90 for the whole yard bird! They sport 2 types of ribs, BTW...1.) traditional pork ribs (with bones) and 2.) 'Country'-style ribs (aka boneless 'fat-back' ribs) - both of which were well smoked and tender. The owner was cool, chatty and dispensed the order quickly (which helped, but we needed to get out of the car and stretch out legs anyway). Excellent BBQ sandwiches. The bread is incredible. My family and I stopped by for chopped beef, sliced brisket and pork sandwiches. We passed by the other BBQ place that is on the feeder road and it was very busy. BB was a block away and not as busy, but the meat was very good. My sliced brisket was juicy and had just the right amount of sauce. What made these sandwiches even better was the bread. It tasted like a sweet roll, almost like kolache bread. We had to wait only 10 minutes or so for the sandwiches. Worth a stop if you are on the road. read more

On the way home from Amarillo. After a disappointing stop at Buck's earlier in the week, we had to stop at Big Boy's! It's worth it. You don't make it on the Texas Monthly Top 50 list for no good reason. Having knocked off about 30 BBQ joints from the list, I've started to get a feel for what they judge for. This place would likely rate higher on the list if it just wasn't so danged NEW looking...and CLEAN...Quaint decor, but not what I'm accustomed to in a top tier BBQ establishment. About the food - I tried it all. A little brisket, some sausage, and a couple ribs. Brisket was fantastic. Bark with a bit of crunch but not burnt. Prominent smoke ring. Moist and tender with just a slight tug. Flavorful, but not as "beefy" as I would have liked. Sausage was flavorful and met the mark. Ribs were great. Not quite fall off the bone, but very tender and flavorful. Also stole a pretty good piece of turkey from a friend while he wasn't looking. Tater salad & beans were nothing to write home about, but who cares. I'm a carnivore. About the only thing I didn't like was the sauce. Luckily, none of the meat needed any. The teens said the beans and the brisket were both a little bland, but give two very solid thumbs up once you add the sauce. Potato salad and coleslaw were fresh and tasty. It is a tale of 2 ribs. I ordered a pound of ribs to go. Part of my order came from 1 rack and part from a second rack. The first rib I ate was as good as any rib I had ever eaten in my life. Sublime! The 2nd rib was from a different rack. If you can imagine a pork rib so dry it was jerky. The 3 ribs that came from the first rack were so dry, they were cooked a long time ago. When you pay $15.95 per pound any customer deserves fresh ribs prepared as good as you can. It is bad when you cheat a customer by giving them old, dried out ribs. Had all my order been from the fresh rack then I would have given them 5 stars. read more
