Buddy's Pizza - Royal Oak We were in the area for the Woodward Dream Cruise and had a hard time finding anywhere with good gluten-free options, so we decided to give Buddy's a try. They offer a homemade gluten free crust made from rice, potato and tapioca flour, and it was honestly excellent. We ordered two pizzas. One regular and one gluten-free and both were delicious. Our entire group especially praised the gluten free pizza, which is saying something because so many places use premade GF crusts that just don't compare to a good traditional pizza. This location is primarily a takeout spot and is pretty small, so there isn't really seating inside. Since we were walking around the Dream Cruise, we were lucky enough to find a bench outside and camped out there to enjoy our pizzas. The staff was friendly, and one gentleman in particular came out several times to ask what we thought of the pizza. I believe he may have been the owner or manager, and you could genuinely tell he cared about his customers and wanted to make sure we enjoyed our experience. All in all, we had a great experience. A take out only location off of busy Woodward north of 13. There is a curb cut to the pull into parking lot. Inside is a bright, clean waiting area, then the counter with the pizza baking area behind it. Staff was nice, pizza was done right on time. After a 6 hour drive from Chicago to the Detroit area I was famished. Fortunately, my brother had picked up Buddy's Pizza. We had cheese pizza along with the antipasto salad. The pizza is detroit style square pizza. While I'm more of a thin crust gal over deep dish when it comes to Chicago pizza, I have to admit this style of pizza is pretty delicious. I ate 1 piece pretty fast and then finished off my daughter's piece since she didn't seem to be as much of a fan (or perhaps just snacked too much during the long car ride). The only thing worth ordering at Buddy's is the Antipasto Salad with the Buddy's dressing. And I frequently but just the dressing for salads we make at home. But I had the Motown and the Greek town pizzas this week on the Detroit style crust and they were awful. Flavorless pieces of crust begging for some seasoning. I have never had a negative experience with Buddy's until ordering from this location. We ordered a small pepperoni pizza and the antipasto salad. The salad was decent but the pizza was unlike any Buddy's pizza I've had before. It lacked flavor, came with barely any sauce, and flat out reminded me of cardboard. Definitely functional, or a bit better, depending on how desperate you are for a Detroit-style pizza. For reference: Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park was closed due to COVID-19, and Buddy's was open this weekend...and we'd been cooking in-house for 6-7 straight days. We needed a break and someone else to do the cooking for us for once. Without Loui's being available, the job falls to what we consider to be Choice #2. It wasn't bad, at all, but this? This is nowhere near the stratospheric heights that Loui's reaches when Loui's is on their game. This is...this is fine. Nothing wrong here, but it's going to be C+/B- territory when all is said and done. It fed us, it tasted pretty good, but the satisfaction level and value for the money isn't up to the gold standard that Loui's provides, and it's at *least* a full letter grade off, even if Loui's isn't at the top of their game. This is decidedly second-tier. Normally, we order a small Loui's pizza, extra well done, double cut, with sauce out to the edges, and that's enough for the three of us. We certainly won't be waddling due to being full, but for the most part, we'll be sated and satisfied with one small pizza, and we will *certainly* enjoy it. That's normally. For this, I distinctly remembered that Buddy's is either smaller and/or lighter than Loui's is, so I decided to go with two small pizzas (don't want to sacrifice the corner crust pieces!), well done, double cut, with sauce out to the edges. Buddy's was *busy*, and I'm glad that they were. There was no shortage of business for them, and the wait we were told was about 45 minutes. I couldn't even get *through* on the phone, and I waited on hold for several minutes. They apologized for this and indicated that the phone system was pretty new and confusing. I did not detect any shysterism from the employee who told me this, only frustration that it sounded kind of normal. Nonetheless, the order was taken and we were told 45 minutes. About a half hour later, our pizzas came out and were served up to us in two individual boxes. I would *not* say that they were well done, but to be fair, they were done "enough"...I do wish that they'd left them in a bit longer to get more/better crust edges, a crispier bottom, etc. Having said that, with the volume of orders they were trying to stay on top of, this is forgivable. "Sauce to the edges" for them apparently means "extra sauce", and I'm not going to fault them for that, at all. Their sauce is fine, not as good as Loui's, but fine, and they *did* spread it out to the edges. I happen to like a lot of sauce, so the extra they put on there didn't bother me a bit, but again: it would have been better had it been left in the oven a bit longer to cook and perhaps harden a bit for a less messy and a bit better/crispier eating experience. "Double cut" was kind of funny: we did have eight pieces on each pizza, but the sizes of each piece varied *greatly* one from the other: some seemed like they were just a standard size of pizza, some were about 1.5 inches in width. Again: not a deal-breaker, but also kind of funny, and with the volume they had, understandable. At first it didn't look like they were double-cut, but I was assured that they were...it's just that the sauce covered them and made it look like they weren't. One obvious preference about Buddy's: their green pepper slices. As for the sizes, I *absolutely* ordered the right amount of pizza. Whereas Loui's would fill us up with one small pizza with absolutely nothing left over, if we had just ordered the one small from Buddy's, we would have been left hungry...all three of us. As it stood, we nearly finished off *both* smalls between the three of us, with only two remaining double-cut pieces out of the two pieces, meaning that it's really just one of eight total slices left over. Clearly, Buddy's is not as filling as Loui's is, and absolutely not as dense as Loui's is. I can eat Buddy's pizza a *whole* lot faster than I can eat Loui's pizza...and maybe for some that's a good thing, but not for us. We prefer the density and satisfaction of Loui's to Buddy's every day of the week. It's OK, and they did all right considering all the circumstances...they were sort of under the gun with all the business they were getting. Still: I cannot understand why anyone would prefer this pizza over Loui's, ever. I guess if you like less sauce (which Buddy's usually has) and a lighter bread/crust (which Buddy's *definitely* is), then maybe you'd prefer Buddy's to Loui's. I just can't get there with you. Their prices for similar pizzas and toppings are similar, so there isn't much of a price difference between them, nor advantage one to the other, cash-wise. Buddy's is a distant second place, but still respectable. They are, however, a *long* way from dethroning the king, which is Loui's. Long live the king, and may the king return quickly. I'm already hungry for some of the best. read more

Wow! That was the best Buddy's Pizza I have had in a long time. I purchased an eight square Sicilian pizza via a carry-out order on Tuesday, 02/11/20 at 3:52 PM and the pizza was outstanding. The crust had the perfect crunch, the pizza was piping hot, there was the perfect amount of cheese, seasoning, toppings, & sauce. It was just absolutely delicious. Whoever made that pizza for my family really put his or her heart and soul into making sure it was the best it could be. We will continue to be regular patrons of Buddy's Pizza. If you're curious about the Sicilian pizza, it has cheese, pepperoni, green peppers, black olives, salami, diced tomato, tomato basil sauce, and Buddy's Sicilian spice blend. read more

Grew up out here and came back to visit family. As usual, gotta get my Detroit-style pizza fix. Buddys always used to be solid but the last 3-5 years have been hit or miss. We ordered pizza on Saturday and gotta say this was the ultimate miss. The pizza was about half as thick as it should be, and way too doughy. Some of the corner slices actually had NO sauce. I couldn't imagine being the cook who put this together, then pulled it out of the oven and though "yep, this is passable for some Buddys Pizza!" Oh well. Lot of my family had said we should avoid this location (sorry but we're not driving over to Hamtramck!). We rolled the dice and looks like we rolled a seven. (For non-craps players, that's very bad.) Will definitely be avoiding this location (and likely the others, as consistency at the other places we've been to over the years has been spotty.) My friends and I made a day trip out to Detroit, we looked up must eats and were told Detroit square pizza is a must eat! We ordered the 8 slice for about $24 one thing I recommend is if you could call in advance to preorder or keep in mind a wait time of 10 mins for the pizza as they make it fresh. Overall we really enjoyed the pizza, the crust/dough was crispy, a good ratio of topping and cheese. Outrageous! Now I know why so many residents of the Detroit Metro are fat as hell - it is Buddy's fault. This local pizza chain makes pizza so tasty that one does not stop when satiated, but rather continues consuming mass quantities of soul satisfying doughy carbohydrates and cheesy fat well past the point of what would be considered civilized. One MUST like deep dish pizza to really appreciate Buddy's; if you don't then stop reading this review now and go eat your thin, dusty, cracker crust. This is no ordinary deep dish pizza; this is Detroit style pizza at its finest. I never experienced Detroit style before Buddy's and if you haven't then you absolutely must. First the shape: Buddy's pizza is a generous square and is cut into 4 very generous slices. The dough is stretched into a deep square shaped pan which allows it to hug the sides. The result is a deep container which supports all the goodness which is still to come. The taste of the crust is reminiscent of the best homemade Italian bread with just the right amount of crispiness along the bottom and the sides. Next, a preposterous amount of cheese is added along with multiple layers of toppings, and then finally the sauce on top. The result? A whole lot of remarkable! The cheese and the crust combine during the baking of the pizza to make for a crispy, cheesy, palate pleaser which must be experienced to be believed. The pizza toppings of the meat deluxe pizza are so plentiful that one wonders if all the pigs and cows in the world were slaughtered for your one pie. The sauce doesn't have too much acid and it perfectly blends with all the other ingredients to make for a sublime combination. One might be tempted to get an 8 square, don't do it. Get the 4 square in order to experience the absurdly tasty edges from the corners - trust me you will not be disappointed. This was my first time doing takeout from Buddy's, my parents and I usually go to the Farmington Hills location. I have no pictures of this pizza for you because my boyfriend and I scarfed it down pretty fast :) and the rest I took to work for lunch the next day. My parents were awesome and each picked up a Customer Appreciation card that Buddy's gave out a few months ago, meaning we get a large deep dish pizza each month for $6.90 (cheese only, add 75c or so for more toppings). I squandered my July coupon, unfortunately, so I was wanting to use my August one. The Lahser/Maple and Woodward locations are about equidistant from me, but with the crazy Big Beaver Rd. construction going on right now I opted for this location. They quoted me about 20 minutes for my order (large deep dish pizza - 8 slices - with half mushroom and half pepperoni). Their parking lot is similar to others on Woodward in that it's extremely narrow, and I had to squeeze past a truck to get in to the lot. Buddy's has never been my favorite deep dish in the area (I prefer Shields) but their pizza was good. I am a mushroom pizza gal (that's my favorite kind) but for some reason, I like Buddy's pepperoni pizza better than their mushroom - I think they use some sort of spicy pepperoni, and they bury it underneath the cheese, and it's very good. In the future I might just get a pepperoni deep dish from them and nix the mushrooms, I think. I'd recommend this location if you are in the area, the pizza was yummy and the staff was friendly. I'm giving it one Star because it's a Buddy's . I feel the same as the recent reviews. My large Pizza for $23.31 was under cooked and doughy with a small amount of cheese and a lot of sauce. Absolutely worst location. Just left and had the most awkward experience. The cashier gave me the wrong order and then gave me attitude about it. Apparently there were multiple orders under the same name. It wasn't a big deal but she got nasty with me because she had to get the manager to do a refund. When the (assistant) manager came, I tried speaking to the cashier about her earlier comments and she literally wouldn't speak. She went silent. I had to ask her why she wasn't responding. Still silent. So awkward! And the manager stood there even more awkwardly! Lol what is wrong with people these days?? How hard is it to communicate!!?? Been a fan of Buddy's for 40 years and unfortunately this location is a joke. I should have relied on the reviews but I thought to give them a chance. One cold pizza was delivered or should I say left on my porch without a door knock or doorbell. That was strike one. I decided to give them another chance and ordered carry out today. Location is dated and that's fine but at least be clean / presentable. Poor management was evident shortly after the door closed behind me and the product was no where near par. The 6 mile location is obviously unbeatable but Dearborn and Northwestern Hwy do a fine job. Avoid this location until the owner listens to the reviews and not provide poor out of the box responses without action. Sad. read more
