They opened 1/2 hour late, were under staffed for the people waiting, and had several broken cars or not cleaned out. I paid online hoping to save some time, ended up wasting a lot anyways, they didn't even have the car I requested on the lot. On the plus side they did offer to give me another car to save time. We made a reservation online. When we came to pick up the truck, the receptionist told us that truck we reserved was not available, so we left the office without getting the truck we reserved. It ended up that we were being charged a security deposit of $150 (that should be on hold until we return the truck). This charge was on hold on our bank account for 5 days, then the money was taken from our account even though we did not rent the truck. When we called the office to ask why there charge us for deposit if they did not give us the truck, the receptionist replied that this is our billing company, not us. She said we can see that you did not take the truck because it was not available, you refused to take a van we offered, so we can ask our billing company to issue a refund that might take 5 more days.... read more

I'd give Budget negative stars if I could. They were one of the worst businesses I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I was "accidentally" charged $850 dollars for $150 dollar rental, I hadn't gone over the mileage, not even slightly. I pointed out the mistake and the useless guy behind the counter shrugged his shoulders and said I'd get a refund in a few days, no I'm sorry, no nothing, he didn't give a shit. I got reimbursed like a month later and had to constantly badger them to even get the refund. Then after the refund, the charged me an additional $150 and lied about me going over my mileage to my credit card company when I disputed the charge. It's a disgusting business run by wildly incompetent people. I would have never chosen them, my friend was moving and purposely forgot her ID making me have to rent the van (we are no longer friends, long story). I would have NEVER considered a budget car rental, I would have used enterprise or U-Haul over this joke of a company, the ex-friend is a pretty cheap person so not shocked she picked the worst car rental place possible. read more

I know have have bad karma when it comes to car issues, but I thought my jaunt to Budget in Allston would be different. But....nope. It's definitely cool that Budget lets people under 25 rent without a fee as long as they pay using a credit card, but what wasn't cool was the car they gave me and the shitty customer service. My car was dirty inside and out...we're talking coffee grounds in the cupholder and footprints on the door's plastic lining. The exterior was scuffed up, but nothing was noted on the car's condition sheet. I know I should never have driven it off the lot, so I'll admit my mistake with the lone star I've leave them. I returned the car to a different location since Allston wouldn't give me a lower rate for the grossness of the vehicle, or for my hassle having to manage them and alert them that it's not cool to give me a dirty car or to accurately represent it's condition at the time of the rental. read more

This has to be the worst customer service experience I've ever had while trying to rent a vehicle. Judging from the other reviews, I'm assuming that there are some great staff members, and some not so great staff members. Just my luck, on the weekend I decided to move, I got the not-so-great staff. Knowing how busy saturdays can be for moving, I reserved a van about 6 weeks in advance. When I arrived to get the vehicle, they told me that all the vans were rented, and they never downloaded my reservation from the server - so I would have to deal with a truck. However, said truck would not fit, nor park, on the tiny, windy, one-way street I was moving to. After explaining to them that I really needed a van, they only offered to call other offices after I asked. No luck...they then transferred me to customer service, which, by the way, isn't available on weekends. Classy. As the saga continues, the guy behind the counter looked like he was trying to sleep off the night before, and didn't want to be bothered at 7 am by my reservation. He then explained that it would take 20 minutes to actually download my original reservation, and made me wait a half hour. After all the hassle, I was able to make a trip with the truck to move my matress and couch, but it was such a hassle, we spent the next ten hours making small trips in my Subaru Outback. They wouldn't even let me leave a comment on the reservation that I wasn't satisfied with the service. I've never heard of any car rental place that didn't have some kind of comment field in their system. Next time - Enterprise. read more

Absolutely terrible, the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I rented a truck in CT and moved a friend to MA (this was mid November). We dropped our truck off at this location on Sunday night after visiting three different gas stations in the area to find diesel for the truck. We finally found one and filled it up, about $40 worth. The next day I see a charge for $86 on my account for a fuel refilling fee. I had the receipt for the gas, and called their customer service line to see what was going on. The dealer stated he put about $40 worth of gas in the truck, and had the receipt to prove it. I thought this was interesting, because if we were both telling the truth, then the truck would have been filled with MORE GAS THAN THE TANK COULD HOLD. Essentially the dealer lied, saying he put more gas in than was physically possible. The Budget customer service center was atrocious as well, but that's a separate post. In the end I'm out of $86 bucks, pissed off, and cannot believe how dishonest this dealer was. Avoid this place at all costs, September 1st or not. read more

This is more a review of Budget in general, as opposed to this particular location, but here goes. I reserved a 10ft truck online waaaaay in advance, like months before I needed it. I was not moving any furniture and I was moving out of a studio so I wanted the smallest truck possible. But lo and behold, when I arrive to get my truck, I learn that the only size they can give me is 16ft. Apparently, they don't guarantee the truck SIZE, just that there will be a truck. In other words, they could have given me an even bigger truck and I would have been really screwed. I tried to tell the guy that I didn't feel confident/safe about driving a 16ft truck, but this fell on deaf ears. Or rather, unsympathetic ears, since he had zero suggestions as for how to make the situation better. He wasn't apologetic in the slightest. I want to point out that while I paid my 10ft truck rate, I paid A LOT MORE in gas because I had a bigger truck. The guzzler had to be refueled like every 3 hours and each time, it was almost $100. So I get the truck, I load the truck. I get on the road. Some things about this charming vehicle: 1. It was deafeningly loud and sounds like a door or something is open at all times. 2. There no tape deck, no aux hook-up for an ipod, obviously no CD player, nothing. Just a shitty radio that made the speakers crackle. Or maybe it was the speakers that were shitty. 3. No wiper fluid. 4. And here's the most dangerous: the HORN DID NOT WORK! When you are inexperienced at driving a truck, having a functional horn is important. I discovered the horn didn't work when I almost died on the highway because someone swerved in front of me and when I tried to use my horn to alert this car to my presence, nothing happened. 5. Flashing light on the dashboard -- when I got the truck, I was told this was flashing because the truck needs an oil change but "don't worry about it." Don't worry about driving halfway across the country in a truck that needs an oil change? Suuuuuuure. When it came time to return this monstrosity, I called the drop-off location to see if I could return after-hours. No answering machine. How hard is it to set up a voicemail service that, I don't know, maybe explains what to do if you want to return a vehicle after the location is closed? So then I called the 24-hour Budget number and was told that they have no information about the operating procedures of their locations. Seriously? That seems like information you should have, buddy. All in all, Budget sucked. I made it to my destination in one piece, but I will never rent a Budget car or truck again. read more

This place has been nothing but awesome to me, and I rent there a LOT. Sometimes its really busy, and the staff is still totally on top of things. Everytime I've reserved a car, they've got what i needed. one time, though, my car couldn't handle mp3 cds. that was a bummer. When I reserved a truck on a busy moving weekend, they had what I needed. Don't try to take a budget rental truck down Memorial Drive. It doesn't fit under the Mass Ave. underpass. I almost learned this the hard way. The guy who runs the place knows me by name now. He's a really nice guy. and funny, too, in a subtle kinda way. You'd think, somehow, that a car rental place in allston would be sketchy, but budget rent-a-car rules. I finally did it. I finally refused the added insurance coverage. What can I say? I'm dangerous. My first experience with this location was decent. I received a free upgrade and the pickup process was hassle free. Four days renting a new Mustang cost only $198. I also liked the fact that EZPass comes installed, with the option of using it or not. In addition to the tolls, it costs an extra $1.50 per day of use, but that's totally worth it to me. Budget Car Rental in Allston totally rocks. I know, I know...it's hard to conceive of a car rental place as having the capability to Rock, but this one manages it. I've rented here at least half a dozen times in the past 2 years. First of all, it is one of the very, very few car places that will take Debit cards for payment. At a place which will go unnamed down the street, I once made a rental reservation and specifically asked if they took Debit cards. They said yes. But when I got there to pick up my car, they said no. I said bye-bye and went down the street to Budget. Their prices are cheap, and I have always had great service there. Very nice and prompt. One time I returned a car without the gas cap because I'd foolishly lost it at a gas station somewhere and they did not even charge me for it! In addition, I have never been harassed by the employees when I turned down the insurance. At many places, they try to badger you into it, and it always makes me uncomfortable. If you're looking to rent a car, I highly recommend these folks. 9/19/2007 Edit: I rented a truck from them a few weeks ago (NOT over labor day), and they were equally awesome. The truck drove SO much better than the many U-Hauls I have driven, and you can reserve for specific times, unlike U-Haul. Budget still rules. read more

Rented cars from here multiple times with no complaints. I have never rented trucks/vans so I can't comment on that. The only issue I have is that it is not open past 5:30 on weekdays. Convienance is good, right on the 57/501 bus route which makes for an easy drop off/pick up. Everytime I have called or just stopped in they usually set me up with a car and have me out in less than ten minutes. One issue though is if you ask/reserve a car over the phone or online there is no guarantee it will still be there when you pick it up. Good service overall efficient and have never been charged a random fee yet, as far as gas-there's a Hess across the street. read more

Stay away. Star FAR away. These guys are nothing short of scam artists. I rented a truck from them back in early May for one day with a fairly attractive rate of $89/day + mileage. I only needed it for a day. After going in, I opted for two hand trucks ($40 total) and insurance ($50) just to make sure. Note that I received this truck in average condition with only half a tank of fuel. They said that's fine...just return it the same way. So I return it later that day after-hours ($15 if I use the key drop-off...something that they don't note anywhere). When I get the bill it's $325+. They claim they had to put $50 worth of gas in + a $30 fill-up charge because I didn't return it with a full tank of gas (I DIDN'T GET IT WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS). I returned it with a half a tank just like I received it. So how does 30 miles equal $50 worth of fuel? Assuming the truck gets about 15mpg, that must be some pretty high quality diesel to cost $25/gallon. Wow. It's super-diesel. I also spent 30 minutes sweeping out the back and cleaning out the cab, but they someone snuck in a $25 cleaning charge. Again, their word against mine. I left it with them in better shape than I received it. Period. After spending 45 minutes on the phone with customer care, it's basically their word against mine. They say they gave me a full tank of fuel (they didn't), and they're saying I didn't clean it (I did). I will NEVER do business with these scam artists. Never. I recommend you stay far far away. I'd give them zero stars if that were an option. read more

This is a small location that has both cars and moving vans. It was very slightly pricier than other locations but far easier to rent from. Sure they offer additional rental services, but I got no hassle about buying rental insurance and no lecture after declining it. Thank you for understanding that I know what risk is and that statistically I would get better returns playing scratch tickets. The car was nice and clean and gave us no problems. Partially my fault on relying on them to check that for me. Made a reservation for a truck. Went to Budget of Allston on the date of my reservation, and they said that my reservation was not in the system and that they had no trucks available. Their solution was to call the national customer service. I called the national customer service and they said that there was no truck anywhere within 40 miles. Later I realized that I had a voicemail from Budget telling me to pick up my truck in South End. By the time I saw the voicemail, the South End location was already closed. It would have been really nice if this information was in some computer system so that customer service or Budget of Allston could have told me there was a truck for me in the South End. Not getting the truck to the next day made moving a lot more painful. Takeaway: don't use Budget if you want to get the truck on your actual pickup day and check your voicemail in case they are sending you to another location to get the truck. read more

Never rent from Avis (this is also an Avis rental location). They "tether" the keys together with a steel cable, which is pretty annoying to start with. Can't give one to your passenger; they dangle and bang on your leg on the highway; if you lock the car with them in it you're hosed. But if you have the temerity to have a multitool and cut the cable, the person at the return desk accuses you of tampering and says they're going to charge $250 (!!). She did give me the option to leave and "re-attach" the keys, but the dealership, Autozone, and hardware store I walked to were unable to help me. The customer service people at their call center were at least polite, but also unhelpful. The best they offered was to "split" the charge with me (as if they're going to somehow pay $125 for a cut cable!), but half of a shit sandwich is still a shit sandwich. The really amazing part to me is that the service person at this rental location was defending this idiotic policy, no doubt dreamt up by some pinhead at Avis corporate as a way to annoy customers and extort money from them. "Tethering" the keys like that in the first place is not customer-friendly, and charging that much for a two-second job for the man with the crimper and steel sleeves is downright customer-hostile. So my plan B is to leave this little rant scattered around the internet, refuse the charge on my credit card, and never do business with them again. I wonder if they'll have the temerity to send a charge for a $2 cut cable to collections. read more

Honestly, this was the worst experience with a business (if they want to call it that) I have ever had. If I could give 0 stars, I would still think I was being generous. Never ever rent a truck from here. I know that Sept 1st is a crazy day and that trucks are nearly impossible to get. So to make sure I got one, I reserved a truck 6 months in advance. As it came closer to the move, I called and confirmed my reservation. They called me twice more afterwards to confirm with me as well. Great. The day that I was supposed to pick up the truck they call me saying they don't have one for me. They tell me this that freaking day... They say that 7 other people are in the same situation. They give me the number of their operations manager, Debbie, who I called maybe 50 times and never picked up. Her voice mail box was full so I couldn't even leave a message. To this day I'm still trying to get a hold of her and she will not pick up her phone. So here I am the day I'm supposed to move about 4 rooms full of stuff without any way of moving it... My girlfriend's dad had to rent a truck from Connecticut, which cost us well over $200, not to mention all the time off from work that all of us had to take to deal with this nonsense. I think I'm a pretty reasonable person. I understand things happen. Trucks break down, people don't return it on time. Fine. But don't call me a few hours before I'm supposed to get a truck and tell me I'm SOL without an explanation or an apology. Let me know in advance so I can make some other plans... This location is horrible. I work with a small moving company. We've had a Budget account for years. Used to go to Traveller St and never had any serious issues there. We moved to Brighton so we tried to make this our primary location. We were overcharged - hit with cleaning and top-off fees all the time. We documented it with photographs and had to bring it to Budget Corporate for them to finally offer us a credit back for tons of false charges. I don't know what we did to get on their bad side, but even before that, they would just slight us in any way possible. Example. I would call up the Budget National Truck Rental line with our company's account and ask if we could get a truck at that location. Four out of five times, they would say no right off the bat, knowing that it was my company looking for a truck. I would then call, just to see, as a normal customer and not mention my business. Miraculously, almost every time, they had a truck available - just not for my company. Another example - we get extremely busy at the beginning and end of every month, especially over the summer. We set up appointments months in advance. A few times, we would get a call the day before our appointment to get a rental, and they would tell us that they no longer have our truck available. They would offer nothing to help us find a new truck, but would just hang up on us when we tried to figure out some other solution. We're not bad people. We're a legitimate business. We would have given this location thousands upon thousands of dollars every single year. We have to rent trucks a lot. For some reason, this location doesn't want our money. We can't even go there anymore. Instead, we go to Budget in Arlington or Traveller St in Boston. These other locations have always been honest and straightforward with us. Even though it is a pretty big inconvenience to drive across Boston or out of the city entirely to get to Arlington, we'll never use this location again. They bring scam artistry to a new level. There are plenty of decent places to rent trucks in Allston/Brighton, and this is not one of them. read more

I reserved my truck 2 months in advance for Sept 1st. Got a call the morning of the 1st saying "there will be a delay in your truck, we don't have any". My pick up time was for 9am. When I arrived I was told there were no trucks available and it would be at least a few hours to get one. They wanted me to drive 45 minutes away to pick up a truck in another town. I refused and an hour and a half later they located one in downtown boston. Eventually I got a truck after much hassel, stress, and driving to a different location. I would NEVER rent from them again. They were rude and did not care that we had movers waiting at our apartment that we were paying by the hour. I called customer service to complain and eventually they gave me a $50 discount for all the hassel. read more

When it did not start the morning I needed it to go to the airport, I called them and told them the hotel reg desk had their car keys and where to find their dead car. These guys are great - very accommodating, they've helped me with last minute reservations, changes in drop off dates, locations.. As I read through these other reviews, I have to agree with Allix's comment - these seem to be one time, first of the month renters. That time of the month (and year, given the school season) will be challenging at any rental location. I've now rented from these guys twice. They have a convenient location and their one-way move prices are significantly cheaper than U-Haul. Customer service is on par with U-Haul (bad), but that's expected. My main gripe is that on the two separate occasions, I reserved a 10 ft truck and both times I was told they didn't have any left. I was stuck with using a 16 ft truck, which is not fun when 1) you don't nearly have enough to even come close to filling it and 2) when you are making moves into NYC, where you have to search far and wide just to find expressways into town that have the overhead clearance to accommodate a 16 footer. They seem to think it's no bid deal to upgrade you for the same price - but it's not like going from a Civic to an Accord exactly. I will rent from Penske next time, which has the same prices. read more

Scam artists. Beware of their interpretation of the contract : if you drive under 75 miles they WILL charge you to refill the car even if you fill it up yourself and the needle is at full. Their contract states that you will only be charged if the car is not filled : there is no indication that the burden of proof is on you, and even though I had a receipt, they didn't ask to see it, and seemed to take my word for it. The trucks are much older than uhaul trucks. Did I mention the battery died and it took 20 minutes to get through to their customer service and nobody showed up so I had to fix it myself. This company borders on criminal. They sent me out on a 901 mile trip with a broken washer fluid system (it was single digits temp btw), the interior was a complete mess and worst of all, the truck had no tail lights. Imagine driving on the highway at night without taillights, it was suicidal. This is just the top of the iceberg. They have a phone system that the only goal is for you to hang up in frustration over. But after several hours of working it, they provide inaccurate information and basically don't give a fuck about you! I was informed that I could return the truck to two different locations at my final destination in NC, neither of which would accept the truck. One place even going so far to tell me "we stopped working with Budget because they constantly let their customers down". I have had zero success getting them to even talk to me about the issues I've experienced. If you decide to ignore all the warnings on this site, you will get what you deserve, a total nightmare! read more

I would leave 0 stars if I could. Here is my horror story with Budget... I reserved a budget truck 2 weeks in advance of my planned move date in July 2018. Less than 12 hours before my move, I received a call from Budget saying that they had no trucks available for my move the next day and gave me a number to call to see if there were any available trucks in the region. After an hour of waiting in sheer panic and a phone call to customer service, I learned there were no trucks available from Maryland to Maine and I would have to find a different service moving service for my move the next day!! If this was the case, why did Budget wait so long to let me know this news?!?! The Budget employee I spoke to on the phone informed me this happened to 7 other customers the same day and he apologized for this inconvenience. He (and I) could not believe how Budget treats its customers in this way. At this point I was in sheer panic mode and tried to call other moving services to reserve something last minute (something I wanted to avoid by reserving a truck two weeks in advance). This left me with very limited and VERY EXPENSIVE options. I initially reserved with Budget because of the money I would be saving, but in the end, I wound up getting a huge headache, and ended up paying hundreds of dollars more than if I had reserved with a reputable truck service in the first place (a service that actually assures you the truck you reserved will be available when you need it). Long story short - I view this company as a scam. I will never attempt to rent a truck from Budget again and I warn anyone I can to stay far away from this company. Even Budget's own employees were horrified at how their own customers are treated by this joke of a company. read more

Certain things were not explained at point of rental... like there is a Minimum Rental period!!! Due to family reasons we decided to take the car back day 2 of a 7 day rental.. Unbeknown to us there was a 4 day minimum rental period in the small print... despite being told by customer services that the rental would be pro-rata.. In my experience, the good part with them was the they were prompt with giving me the car keys and there was little waiting in line. The bad part was that they were inconsistent in their instructions and unreasonable and quick in charging fines (which led to me paying a $96 penalty bill for bringing the car back at 4:18 pm on Sunday afternoon- which they previously told me that it was OK as long as the car is back before Monday morning). So, my impression about them overall is they really don't care about their customers. Also, I do not trust them anymore to be fair and consistent in their policy. I would give this appalling sorry excuse for a business negative stars if it was possible. We reserved a truck one month prior to our move out day and also confirmed it 24 hours before the rental to make sure it would be there. An hour before we were supposed to pick it up, Budget called us and said "ummmmm sorry, the truck won't be back until tomorrow. You have to call customer service and find a new one." This was 6 hours before I had to be out of my apartment and I did not have the time to be searching for a new truck. Customer service told me they would call me anytime in "one to four hours." They called me about an hour later and told me they had a truck 40 miles away and I would have to come pick it up. Not having a car, this was not possible. I had already begun searching at Penske and U-Haul for trucks and luckily U-Haul found me a truck in about 5 minutes. The craziest part of the entire day was when I said I couldn't go 40 miles away to pick up the other truck, they told me I would be charged a "no show fee" because I didn't pick up the truck. Why would I get charged a no show fee when it was the truck that was a no show? The manager Hamid is super creepy and a completely rude, disgusting piece of trash. All of the employees looked like they just dragged their haggard ass bodies in after a 3 day bender and chain smoke their way through the workday. Even the office reeks of cigarettes, unwashed bodies and booze soaking out of every pore in their body. Basically everyone in this office looks like they hate their lives, jobs and are just one bad night away from doing themselves in. Beware of the kid with the barbwire tattoos- he was so out of it, he couldn't make eye contact let alone answer basic questions even a preschooler would know. I cannot put into words the frustration I went through with this location and how much I think Hamid and his employees should be locked up and the key thrown away. Avoid this location at all costs. By far, the worst customer service experience in my life. We waited in line for 2 hours for a truck. Many people waited and then they ran out of rentals. The manager had decided not to show up so a very rude, and inefficient employee was the only one there. He threatened to not rent a truck to anyone who gave him a hard time. Over three people called corporate to file formal complaints while standing in line. Don't waste your time. read more
